    Changing Reverse Osmosis system filters is easy, check out this video to learn how!

    Ah man - that was so so helpful!
    For ten years, I’ve had a reverse osmosis system and paid a guy to change the filters for me.
    I’ve decided to have a go and bought all the filters. Now I’ve watched this incredibly useful, clear and patient video, I feel confident to make a start. I think you’ve covered all the basics, all the possible problems that might arise and then some great tips about towels and flushing the system before drinking.
    I can’t tell you how thankful I am! Keep up the good work. I wish there were more men like you, who don’t make it complicated so as to appear clever and then tease the person who wants to try for themself!
    Respect to all modest men who are teaching us how to be good citizens, with kindness.

    Gary, I am so grateful for your videos. My filter system is almost 10-years old and the filters had never been replaced. (Long story involving a renter who installed them but passed away before he could do or teach me the maintenance and then I never found anyone who could do it.) Anyway, your video is great and now I’m no longer intimidated by the system. I’ll be able to do it regularly and by myself. (I also had to re-pressurize the system and your other video taught me how to do that.)

    I have seen other video's on changing filters on similar systems and they said to not install the RO membrane until you have flushed out the carbon filter, otherwise it will ruin the RO membrane....makes sense to me.

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  10 місяців тому +1

      I have performed these filter chnages hundreds of times in customers homes and since the membrane is typically only changed every 5-7 years but the carbon and other filters are changed annually we do not remove the membrane during the filter replacement unless we are replacing the membrane. I have never had a problem with the carbon fines "ruining" the membrane or have ever heard of it happening to someone else. It wouldn't hurt to do it that way, just not necessary.

    Just followed your video and changed my filters. Great video , especially that they were very difficult to get off. My problem is there is only 3 seconds of water running from the tap, then nothing. It was doing this before I changed the filters and thought it was because of old filters.

    Question: I saw another video where the person disconnected the RO membrane so he could flush out the new filter. It seems like that made sense to do since it seems the new filters have a lot of debris that needs to be flushed out. Wanted to get your thoughts on that.

      Yeah that was disconnecting the tube on the in side of the membrane and flushing the carbon filters through when new. Definitely worth doing as there's loads of loose carbon in there, the water s grey

    Thank you for your video. I was stuck on removing the tubing from the post carbon filter. The written instructions didn't do it for me, your video is a big help. My system also says to sanitize with bleach, which I have done with the two large filter housings at the bottom (I don't have 3), but not sure how to disconnect the tube to the tank to add bleach there. I need help. I am a DIYer and installed this system myself. It's been about a year, but for the past several months, maybe since the beginning, I have noticed an odor...now getting stronger every day. First glass of water in the morning is now disgusting. It smells like rubber, like it might be the bladder inside the tank. Obviously I don't drink it, but I run water through it for maybe 5 or 10 minutes, then the odor goes away. The water never really tastes bad, even with the odor (yes, I tried it once). We also have a whole house softener in the garage. The TDS at my sink is 198 while at the RO tap is 7. How do I get rid of this smell?

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  Рік тому

      Isolate to see if it is coming from the tank or the filters by shutting off the tank and running using without to see if that is where it is coming from. If not the tank, dissinfect the system using this video ua-cam.com/video/61r4CcB5HwU/v-deo.html

    Hello, I've searched all over the internet, and see the same informationm but can't seem to find the order and type of filters that go in a 5 stage home system. Stage 1 is a PP-5 micron filter, Stage Stage 4 is the RO membrane, Stage 5 is post RO activated carbon (I believe it's typically labeled as T33?).
    What about stage 2 and 3? What is the difference between a CTO (carbon block filter) and a UFD (granulated carbon filter)? Do you mix two types together, or use the same? Can you leave out one compartment empty so it acts as a 4 stage filter instead?

    Hi Gary … thanks for the many videos on RO systems. I just changed out my filters and membrane (75 gpd rating) and flushed the system 3 times. I then measured the TDS against a distilled water standard (0 ppm). My water supply to the RO system contains TDS = 150 ppm and RO water measures TDS = 50 ppm. You mentioned in one of the videos that one should see a 90% reduction in TDS. So I was hoping to be in the 15 to 20 ppm range on the RO water. I will continue to monitor the TDS after a few more system flushes.
    My question to you is … do RO membranes have a design/performance limit regarding TDS removal? My new membrane is an Aqua Flo membrane - Model 1812 - 75 -NPI. My system is a Canature 475 with (one sediment and two carbon filters. No polishing filter). Thanks in advance for your feedback. 😊

Filters were 1.5 years old, membrane at least 2 years old if not more, and I immediately noticed the flow dramatically increased. I just bought a TDS meter today and checked our tap water level (740), bottled spring water level (30) but the RO water level is super high (1585). You need to flush the membrane longer. they come with a preservative which will elevate the TDS. You need to fill and empty the tank at least 3 times, which typically means flushing for about 10 hours.

    Hi Gary, thanks for all these very helpful videos. I replaced all five filters (including the membrane) in my 5-stage RO system about a month ago. I flushed the filters as you suggest. My tap water has a TDS of around 650. The water from the RO tank has a TDS of around 100. However, if I shut off the tank and let the filtered water drip, the TDS can get as low as 25. I have tested this several times and the results are consistent. I was thinking that perhaps the pressure from the tank might be reducing the effectiveness of the membrane, but air pressure is correct at 7 psi when the tank is empty. Any idea what might be going on and what I can do to fix it?

      I would try changing the flow restrictor to wee if that helps.

    how soon after changing the filters should the tds be 30?

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  Рік тому

      Once the filters have been purged ( about 2 gallons of water) the TDS should be 10 % of the water supply if the membrane is working correctly

    Does the tank ever need replacing?

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  2 роки тому

      Sometimes after 8-10 years but others will last 20.

    Wouldn’t you somehow flush the carbon filter rather than flush all the carbon through the entire RO system?

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  Рік тому

      There is no flushing, The carbon removes the chemicals as the water passes through.

    Do you have a particular TDS meter you recommend?
