I turned off the valve before the housing, there isn't one after, and pressed the release (got sprayed in the face 😂🙄) anyways. I'm scared to take it off because a ton of water is coming out. I screwed it back on but it won't stop dripping (water is still off) anybody please help!!😬
@@tiffanybusse199 don't worry. The water is flowing back from your house because you don't have a shut off after the filter. As long as you have shut off the water going to the filter run water at a faucet nearby until it slows right down to nothing and then remove the filter and catch any water remaining in a bucket.
I own a retail water store and my maintenance guy locked the housing very tight to prevent leakage with chain wrench after filter change 🤦🤦🤦 I tried strap wrench with breaker bar, water pump plier, 2 filter housing wrenches with 2 pvc pipes attached by the handles, etc etc. Nothing really worked 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I got new housing after all.
Seriously, this guy should be nominated for an Oscar. He clearly understands peoples' struggles with the filters and boils down the issue with simple, well articulated solutions. Thanks Gary
MAN, THATS A FACT, HE EXPLAINED IT SO WELL. I WAS STUCK FOR 3 DAYS NOW; I JUST BOUGHT A HOUSE THAT USES WELL WATER AND I DONT LIKE IT MUCH BECAUSE THE WATER HAS A STINK TO IT. AND I WENT TO CHANGE THE FILTER WITH THE WRENCH THAT IS MADE OF HARD PLASTIC AND I SNAPPED IT BECAUSE I DIDNT KNOW YOU DONT TIGHTEN THE FILTER DOWN WITH THE SAME TOOL, SO I GOT IT STUCK VERY HARD, USED THIS MANS TRICKS AND I WAS HAPPY AND THANKFUL. NOW I AM WONDERING HOW TO USE THE REGEN TANK. TO PROPERLY FILTER IT, THE LAST FILTER WAS SO BLACK AND STUNK SO BADLY.
First time with a water filter change. It was so stuck. Thank God I found your video. We were going to have to get the plumber in. I heated with the blow dryer as you described band it took no strength at all to remove it. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Also, my husband is in awe at what a smart girl he married 50 years ago. It pays to do the research.
Gary the Water Guy-- You are a ROCK STAR! I appreciate your incremental approach to open a stuck housing. I successfully removed the housing with the Lisle Strap Filter Wrench with a pipe extension. Following each of your recommended techniques allowed me to finish the job without damaging the housing. Thank you for taking the time to make this valuable video!
Thank you so much! Your video was so helpful. I am an older woman (but even when I was younger.... I struggled and feared changing the filter. ) Your video's are so helpful....you are a GEM! Not only great suggestions for getting the housing unstuck but your other videos really helped so MUCH! Thank you ..Thank you ...Thank you!!!
Hi Gary! My wife and I just moved up to Oro a few months ago and we basically knew nothing about water filtration systems. We found your channel and we quickly learned everything we needed to know to get us up and running with clean water! We have watched 4 videos and learned how to unstick a filter housing (this video) as well as changing the filter and yearly maintenance on our UV light filter! All awesome videos! Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge!
Excellent thank you. I had just broken my filter housing wrench before I searched youtube and found your video. Bought two new ones added the pipe and worked like magic. I could have saved myself some sweating if I watched this first. Thanks for taking the time to make this.
Just to say thank you. I was able to change the filter without flooding my basement! Your instructions are crystal clear, to the point, without chitchat nor background music. I also appreciate the transcript.
Same. Gary, THANK YOU so much. I have a GE GXWH30C, and have been changing the filter for >10 years, but it was getting worse and worse, even after I used the silicone tactic. Earlier this year, it finally refused to turn. I spent several weekends over the past 6 months, wrestling and staring at the damn thing, and it would NOT budge. BUT THEN I tried your hair dryer tip. Alle-frickin-leuia!! Can I send you some $ to say thankyou!?
Gary - I've had to use a strap wrench before but I could not get this last replacement to turn so I watched your video again - I used the extended leverage trick with length of pipe. Worked like a charm. Used more silicone on the gasket and was sure not to over tighten this time. You rock, dude! Thanks!
THANK YOU!!!!!!! I live alone and could not get my leaking housing unstuck. The hair dryer trick worked perfectly. The job is now done without needing to call in reinforcements. Very appreciative of your video!
Always remove, clean, and inspect the o-ring. They will eventually need to be replaced if there are any nicks or tears or worn spots, but assuming there is no physical damage they should last for at least two to three years. Then apply plumbers (food grade) clear silicone grease to both the o-ring and the threads on the housing. A light coat is all you need.
This video was so helpful! I didn’t have any of the extra items in the video to loosen the filter housing…except the blow dryer, it worked perfectly. My dad passed 3 1/2 years ago and my mom has me do a lot of the stuff he used to do and your videos helped me with the water filter. Thank you!
Thanks this was a great help for me! Purchased a waterfront property and on a drilled well with 2 water filters. No experience with this type of system. Your blow dryer trick did the job for me so thanks again!
Ur the best!!! Hair dryer worked. I used it for two mins after unscrewing filter from wall. I tried to twist after heat and still nothing so, I gave up and connected the housing back to the wall. Then just to see I used the plastic wrench one more time and viola! The tension from the wall and then the heat from the dryer worked. TY!
These are great! Another tip worth trying: Add a tiny bit of pressure to tighten it just to break it loose, and then try turning to loose again. I struggled with mine for a half hour and felt like I was gonna crack the wrenches, and put a little pressure in the direction to tighten it and then turned back to loosen it again and it came right off!
Thanks for the hints. I had forgotten to relief the pressure on the outlet side. I did shut off the outlet valve and pressed the relief valve on the filter housing, but it was still stuck. Once I relieved the pressure on the line and then shut the valve, the filter unscrewed easily. I use petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to lube the "O" ring and it has never failed me. I would also recommend that the strap used in case the supplied wrench won't work is to to a auto supply house and purchase a strap wrench that I have used to remove oil filters on 18-wheelers big diesel engines.
Glad it worked. Vaseline will degrade the orings. Better to use silicone grease waterestore.ca/products/plumbers-secret-clear-silicone-grease-food-grade-113-gram
Thank you so much for the great tips. We eventually were able to get the housing off by heating the cap with a blow drier. We will be looking into that metal wrench for the next time. Thanks again for a great video!!
Thank you so much for this video!!! Both my boyfriend and I had tried with all our strength, and I was determined to find a way to open those filters. The blow dryer technique worked wonders! Thank you!
Well I followed your instructions and it worked PERFECTLY!. I was trying to get this thing off for days and I followed your simple steps and it came right off. Very simple. Great Video and look forward to more. Thanks
Hi. We are new to this home water filtration technology. Thank you for doing such a clear, thorough job of showing us how to change filter and what to do when you have a real problem. i.e stuck big blue housing. I am handy but your video shows me what i can and cannot do, since i do not wish to break the housing. Thank you again. 100% great
Gary, Thanks so much. The water company couldn't change the filter for me. Bought the wrench and grease you recommended and Voila. I changed my filter in ten minutes. Thanks again
Gary, the realeasing of the pressure after closing the water off did the trick otherwise the filter housing would not budge. than i brought plumbers grease from homedepot to coat the o ring replacing the filter housing. thanks again
My husband says thank you, thank you, thank you for the hair dryer tip. We weren't able to get the filters without your advice. Easy to remove once we heated it.
Gary!!! It worked!!! Hubby had the brute force, but I had the smarts to google it and found YOU...and voila! Hubby pushed the red pressure release button and the distiller cartridge unscrewed easy peasy. THANK YOU❣❣❣
I couldn’t budge it until I released the pressure by opening the downside valve and turning on a tap...then it was dead easy. Brilliant advice, thanks so much.
Hey Gary the Water Guy - thank you for taking the time and effort to produce this excellent, and easy to understand, video tutorial on your method to remove a "stuck water filter housing" and the way to prevent this occurrence in the future. Keep up the good work!
I just watched your video because my filter housing got stuck. And thanks to you. I was able to get it open but wanted to share what I did wrong. I was in a hurry. I wanted to change the filter. I took it out. I put it back on and I accidentally forgot to put the O-ring on the top and man was it stuck. I didn’t have a lot of room to use a piece of tubing so I wound up getting a rubber mallet and making sure that the wrench was all the way at the top of the housing and then pounding it a few times with the rubber mallet and this worked. Thank you so much for a simply great and informative and helpful video.
Good advice here. I worked on large diesel trucks for many years. I had a Snap-On strap wrench like the one you here, and used it on the big oil filter housings on those trucks. Worked really well. I use a silicon grease on the water filter O'rings too. And, when installing the new water filter and housing, I never tighten them with the wrench. Just hand tight is plenty.
Gary, THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! I was about ready to give up trying to remove my filter housing, but your suggestion to use a pipe over the plastic wrench handle worked great! I’ll never dread replacing the filters again!
Thanks for a great video, when I change my water filter, I put a little petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on my Oring, and that helps lube the Oring for future removal. Just like putting a film of oil on your oil filter before installing it on your vehicles. Thanks for your common sense videos.
Yes, but you should be using plumbers clear silicone grease instead of vaseline waterestore.com/products/hum-plumbers-secret-clear-silicone-grease-food-grade-5-gram Vaseline is petroleum based and will degrade that o ring over time.
Thank you! I broke the plastic wrench trying to loosen the housing, whoops. So I bought a new one and sought help online. Glad I found your video. New wrench + pipe + hair dryer got it off easy peasy!
My favorite channels on YT are the ones where the people totally love what they are doing, Gary loves what he does, and I bet what ever he puts up for sale is the best product in that arena. I just put in a order for a RO system, I will up date this as I go along, date is 9/25/21 just ordered.
Thanks! I was trying with all my strength to take filter off, almost breaking the mount. Watched your video, then released water pressure by opening the faucet. Came right off after that
Thanks Gary. Once you finally do get it off, the MOST important way to prevent it from happening again is to reattach it with your HANDS ONLY. Don't use the wrench to tighten or you'll be right back here watching videos next time you change your filters!
Omg! I had the hardest time getting the water filter off. It would not budge, no matter what I did. I tried his method with the hairdryer, and it came off with ease! Thanks for sharing. Much appreciated. 😊
Thanks Gary, I had a bad O ring caught in the threads and went for the heat gun method. This saved me about $30 from buying the strap. Worked like a charm
The pipe trick plus the plastic wrench that came with it worked for me, thank you so much for sharing this valuable tip I was about to give up and just live with it.
I was desperate to get the filter changed, it's actually been a few years since it had been. Reefing on it didn't really help since I'm not that strong so thought I'd try the hair dryer tip. It worked! Thanks!😊
This guy is the man, thank you! All I needed was a demonstration of which direction counts as Lefty loosey on my filter and I was good to go. Thank you!
Thank you for your advice to apply heat to the outside. I have a Frizzlife TAM3. Managed to unscrew the filter but had trouble unscrewing the filter from the container. I rinsed the container outside with hot water and tried again and that did the trick. Thanks!
Thank so much for the information. Once I relieved the water pressure by turning off my well at the circuit breaker box and draining the water lines, the filter housing came right off!!! Yeah!
We will definitely check for anything left over in the bottom of the filter don't know could be what happened but i'm glad I watched you video thank you
Your suggestions have been extremely helpful in addressing this issue. I was pleased to find your knowledge in this area helpful, but it may be the only solution on UA-cam!🗝🗝
Thank you! The last time it was stuck, I twisted hard enough to break the plastic water pipe going to the filter cannister. Made a job for myself, for sure. With re-installation I coated the threads and O-ring gasket with Vaseline. Next time should be much easier. If not, out comes the hair dryer!
Great, great details Gary!! I also followed your video for replacing the UV lamp and cleaning the sleeve for the Viqua VH200 F10 system. All of that went well because of your clear instructions and details. However, the filter housing will not budge. I tried increasing the torque by adding a plastic tube to increase the handle length - didn't work. Before all that, I pressed the pressure release button at the filter housing top and nothing happened - no sound. I also completely opened the drain hole at the housing bottom. A bit of water came out, but not a lot. My water filter model is the Viqua CMB-510-HF. I'm considering to buy the steel wrench, but it's not very clear that there is a matching one at Amazon. My plastic wrench has an inner diameter of 7 1/2" and there are 10 protruding notches. Nothing on Amazon looks close. If I can't get a matching steel wrench, which of these two would be better to buy: 1. Adjustable belt strap wrench with 9" steel handle or 2. Lisle 60200 HD Strap Filter Wrench. Thanks for your great videos. I have subscribed.
I could not get it off no matter what I tried. Than I watched your video and tried to heat housing with my heat gun. After about 5 minutes of heating I was able to take it off without any extra force. I was actually surprides how easy it went off. Thank you so much for a great video.
Super helpful. I was afraid of cracking the plastic cannister if I pushed too hard. Used the wrenches offset. I didn't have plumbers grease so I sprayed and wiped a thin layer of white lithium grease on the screw on part. Hope that saves me next time. Thank you!!
I need to change the two filters in our water filtering system. I could undo only one of the filters. Watched you video got my heat gun and heated the exterior chamber. Pulled really hard and it came loose. Thank you for your really helpful video.
Hey thanks for the channel buddy. Been struggling with my filter for months since getting his house and you've give me a few new ideas to try. Hoping they work thanks
thanks for the help. I was replacing a filter on a GXWH70M and could not get it to budge at all. As soon as I drained the system like you mentioned and relieved the pressure, it came right off.
In extreme cases I have used a chain wrench, but before using it, I cover the housing sump with a piece of cloth so I just dont scratch it with the wrench.
This happens to everyone at one time or another! Check out the video so you'll know what to do when it happens to you.

This guy is the man, thank you! All I needed was a demonstration of which direction counts as Lefty loosey on my filter and I was good to go. Thank you!
I usually just ask my wife.
Thank you for your advice to apply heat to the outside. I have a Frizzlife TAM3. Managed to unscrew the filter but had trouble unscrewing the filter from the container. I rinsed the container outside with hot water and tried again and that did the trick. Thanks!
Glad it helped. Please share video with friends and family
Thank so much for the information. Once I relieved the water pressure by turning off my well at the circuit breaker box and draining the water lines, the filter housing came right off!!! Yeah!
Glad it helped Please share video with friends and family!
Wow. My filter housing was frozen solid. All I did was put the heat to it and presto off she came. Thanks so much for the hints Gary.
Glad it helped! Please share video with friends and family

Thank you a lot, Gary. Your tip about using a pipe to leverage really saved my day!!

Somehow the house I bought still had two wrenches in the shed, so doubling up worked for me. Appreciate the vid.
Glad to hear! Please share video with friends and family.
Thanks Gary. I struggled like a mad man trying to get off the filter housing. Your hair dryer trick worked!
Glad it worked. Please share video with friends and family
Thank you, Gary - heating it did the trick. So relieved that we were able to do it ourselves - great advice and directions.
Glad it helped! Please share video with friends and family.
I guess I'm 1 of 2100 people that had trouble removing the filter. Thanks for the tips.
Glad it helped. Yes I'm sure there will be lots more families helped by this video. Please share with friends and family.
I’m one too, his advice helped so much!
Just get El cornholio to hold the second wrench butthead
😁😆🤣
Thank you Gary, I used the hair dryer tip and it worked beautifully. I was very pleased that didn't need to call a man to come help me! Cheers 👍
Glad it helped. Please share with friends and family.
Thank you! The last time it was stuck, I twisted hard enough to break the plastic water pipe going to the filter cannister. Made a job for myself, for sure. With re-installation I coated the threads and O-ring gasket with Vaseline. Next time should be much easier. If not, out comes the hair dryer!
Yes, you have a great plan. I like it! Please share video with friends and family!
Thanks. Need to try this on my dual filter system this week. Probably stuck for the filter piece not being removed.
I hope it helps
The blow dryer tip worked for me to remove a water filter housing from a drinking water system! Thanks!!

I prefer the Lisle. Did you try heating up the outside of the housing? My installer pooh-poohed the idea until he tried it. Now he is a convert.
Thanks for pointing to the large steel wrench. That made all the difference for me!

Thank you for your helpful tips. I tried the strap approach and it worked great. Thank you again!

I could not get it off no matter what I tried. Than I watched your video and tried to heat housing with my heat gun. After about 5 minutes of heating I was able to take it off without any extra force. I was actually surprides how easy it went off. Thank you so much for a great video.
Glad it worked! Please share video with friends and family
Thank you!! I used an extension piece from a shop vac to loosen my filter!
How did you do it?

Thank you!!! You completely saved me. Hair dryer worked wonders!
Glad I could help! Please share video with friends and family.
Lol the description of which way to turn and then going the opposite has me cracking up. Nice video!
Why? I tell you to turn it to the left (which is the correct way) and then I show you turning it to the left to loosen it.
Blow dryer worked. God bless this man 🔥🔥🔥. Thank you.
You're very welcome! Please share video with friends and family!
Thank you for this. I should have thought to warm up the housing but I didn’t. Warming it up helped me out big time. Thanks!

Thank you Gary, the hairdryer worked and I am feeling really proud of myself.
And so you should! Please share video with friends and family
Thanks for your help. The blow dryer worked like a charm!
Glad to hear! Please share video with friends and family.
Super helpful. I was afraid of cracking the plastic cannister if I pushed too hard. Used the wrenches offset. I didn't have plumbers grease so I sprayed and wiped a thin layer of white lithium grease on the screw on part. Hope that saves me next time. Thank you!!

Thanks,
The blow dryer trick worked great in combination with the short pipe for leverage.

thanks for the help. I was replacing a filter on a GXWH70M and could not get it to budge at all. As soon as I drained the system like you mentioned and relieved the pressure, it came right off.
Glad to hear that it worked. Please share video with friends and family!
In extreme cases I have used a chain wrench, but before using it, I cover the housing sump with a piece of cloth so I just dont scratch it with the wrench.
Yes, that sounds like it would definitely work!
Hair dryer trick worked like a charm. Thanks a bunch!
