The Kenneth T. Wessner Chair of Biblical Studies Inaugural Lecture
You’re invited to hear the Rev. Dr. Amy Peeler speak on the topic of “Born of a Woman: Humanity Valued and God Revealed.” The lecture was held Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at 7:00 PM in Barrows Auditorium (Billy Graham Hall). This inaugural lecture event reflects Dr. Peeler’s appointment to the Kenneth T. Wessner Chair in Biblical Studies.
Dr. Peeler’s lecture explores the reality that no orthodox theologian, nor any serious historian, denies that Jesus was human. Since-by God’s design-humans come to be through conception and birth, it is also by God’s design that this same process happened to Jesus. In this in-depth exegetical analysis of Galatians 4:4, Dr. Peeler explores the implications for humanity and our knowledge of God in Paul’s assertion that “God sent forth his son, born of a woman.” Paul’s phrase stresses God’s choice to make a pregnancy the beginning of salvation. It is not only Jesus’s divinity and humanity that matter to Paul-Jesus’s mother matters as well.
