The guy who was the engineer on that ballast train is a good friend of mine and at 8:38 is a good friend of mine and a railfan as well. He's been on the railroad since the early 80s. Highest seniority engineer between Clifton Forge and Russell, KY. At one time, he was even on the board of directors for the C&O Historical Society.
Wow thanks for the information! I had seen his face in many pictures from this area of CSX trains and then I saw him on this train and knew it was that friendly guy in all the pictures I had seen.

Thanks! Yeah its a great line and a great area in general. Wish I lived less then 9 hours away from it... Hope to come back some time in the next few years even though the C&O signals will no longer be standing.
Awesome video and great shots of the signals. I went there about 2 years ago and it is not as cool as it once was, without the C&O Signals standing. I have heard there are still some C&O Signals in Kentucky on a CSX Line along with several in Ohio still. In the past month, I have been searching for spots with B&O Color Position Lights still standing, and there are several spots. The CSX Indiana Sub has plenty between Seymour and Cincinnati, and the CSX Toledo Sub has many North of Dayton. I hope to find some good spots with some C&O Signals sometime soon.
Thanks! Even though the signals are all gone on this line, I will still visit again for sure. It such a nice and peaceful spot. Just sitting on a bench at the station relaxing...takes your mind off all the crap back home especially if you live in Jersey like me lol. Nice spot, friendly people, not that many trains though.. But it's still worth it. If you make the trip this far, you might as well go the extra hour and visit the NS Pocahontas District too... CPL's still standing. I'll hopefully make it there this summer.

If you're on Facebook, you can add him as a friend cause he seems to accept any railfan friend requests.

Glad you made it while the signals were up. Nice video!
Thanks! I sure as hell am too!
Excellent video.
Superb captures and video, Hans! :o)

Larry R Wendell Jr Thanks!

Even with the C&O signals gone, the Allegheny Sub is still the prettiest on the system.
Well, that, and the North Mountain Sub.....
Nice!
Thanks!
Anytime!
Nice video. Is there any particular reason why C&O signals have the red light on top for the top signal and on the bottom for the bottom signal?
Do you have uploaded footage of your first visit?
I do not...I was probably 8 yrs old and took a few picture that would have to be scanned but that trip was one to remember for sure
