When Sirius introduced herself Subaru never took it as a joke, he said ''If it is a joke, is not funny at all'', as a response to someone else in the crowd, you can see his reaction as soon as she says she's an archbishop, everyone else was confused but he was already angry and this is not shown in the episode but Subaru was actually trying to communicate with Beatrice at that moment. As soon as Sirius clapped her hands, all of them were doomed, she even says that Subaru and another 3 people are very angry and should calm themselves. So no, he didn't take it lightly at any moment.

This episode felt like the very definition of "calm before the storm". Everything was so happy and fun throughout. Seeing all these characters we hadn't seen in ages interact and live their best lives was great. Then they had disaster strike in at the last moment to remind everyone what the fuck you're watching. I also liked how the episode takes place a year after the last season, sort of implying Subaru likely hadn't died in a long time. It makes him dying again at the end of the episode that more impactful since he'd likely gotten used to live outside of Return by Death.
There's actually another reason why Subaru says that he feels sick. Subaru didn't lose the memory of being under Sirius ability and was disgusted by himself cheering on the situation he just witnessed
There's a lot going on behind that reaction by Subaru: 1) He is sickened and ashamed of what Sirius's authority did to him and what it made him do. 2) He hasn't died in a long time and was honestly starting to heal from the constant stress and trauma of Return by Death, only to suddenly have to face it all over again. 3) Death will never be the same for Subaru after his visions from his Unthinkable Present and what Satella told him. He now knows there's a possibility that every time he dies, he leaves a whole timeline behind full of loved ones who will have to grieve and carry on without him. That thought especially angers him every time he dies, because he KNOWS how much Emilia and Beatrice need and care for him. He knows it will devastate them, Beatrice especially. And as the only one who can remember Rem, it also puts the chance of her awakening further out of sight. And so death is no longer a convenient tool for him to use and the thought of failing an entire world of people he loves-- it scares, sickens, and enrages him. This is a Subaru who values his life and has learned not to take his time for granted. It's exactly for that reason that he's trained for a whole year by the way, so that, even if he can never truly match the magical and marshal demigods of this world, he can be stronger, fitter, and more capable of surviving in this world, so that he will have more options in times of peril than to just die. His newfound friends and family deserve nothing less from him after all.
There's a lot going on there. "ah shit here we go again", "what the fuck did Sirius make me do? that poor boy was terrified and I was clapping?", "oh god I died again! I died and that may be a whole other timeline where I've left Emilia, Rem, Beako, and everyone else alone! Oh god Beatrice needs me! I can't just die!"
That white-haired guy is Regulus, the archbishop of greed. He attacked Rem and Crusch together with gluttony, and he also appeared in Emilia's backstory with Pandora
27:27 "They're freaking clapped". Subaru was definitely on guard the minute she introduced herself but was unable to do anything right after she immediately clapped. Subaru's tendency to yap was used as an effective misdirect of when and how they got hypnotized.
The sheeragan failed this time. The first thing Subaru said was "If this is a joke, it's not funny". He DID NOT took it as joke. Sirius outright called him out for being "angry" among a few others.
Genuinely how does someone completely misread the subtitle and after pointing it out not even have a subtle idea that they might have misread it and check again to correct themselves as usually the case with your instincts in case you're not sure you read the subtitles right, but in this case she just straight up reads it completely wrong and opposite.

31:42 *This is the reason why Subaru didn't run before Sirius clapped, everything has a justification and here I leave the small excerpt of the same scene but in the light novel:* Rachins kept an eye on what was going on overhead as he moved through the crowd towards Subaru, who also couldn't take his eyes off the eccentric figure, even though he was standing apart from the rest of the crowd. For some reason, he realized that letting his attention slip would be an irrevocable mistake. There was no need to doubt the individual's identity. -That was exactly the same malice Petelgeuse had. _“Besides, Romaneé-Conti?”_ The surname the eccentric blindfold had invoked: Romanée- Conti, just like Petelgeuse. Of course, since Petelgeuse had been an evil spirit, a blood relative sharing the same name was highly unlikely, but.... _“Don't tell me that all the Archbishops of the Seven Deadly Sins use the same surname...”_ The existence of a famous Romanée-Conti family within the Witch Cult producing Archbishops one generation after another was such a twisted concept that even the thought of it was enough to make Subaru wrinkle his nose. Without those trivial thoughts in his head, Subaru would have already run away. An Archbishop of the Seven Deadly Sins was right there. It wasn't Gluttony that was what he was looking for, but there was an Archbishop. _“-I have to catch her and make her confess everything.”_ One way or another, it would open a path to Gluttony. Having decided this, Subaru calmed his burning heart. Simultaneously, he concentrated on the bond with Beatrice within his chest. By calling out to her, Subaru could convey that something was wrong. This was the firm bond that bound a contractor to his contracted spirit. Deep inside his body, he would grasp it, pulling towards him all at once.... _“-That's enough!”_ _“¡¿-?!”_ But his attempt to call out to Beatrice was interrupted, abruptly, by a dry, piercing sound. It was the sound of the bandaged eccentric clapping her hands. Subaru's breath was cut off by the noise, which was so loud that it seemed to reach every corner of the city and made the square itself tremble.
That explains a lot! Sirius's authority was not enough just to clap her hands, from the first second Subaru heard Sirius speak he was already progressively casting the spell on him. It's a bit difficult Authority to understand, not more than Regulus' but yes. Thanks for explaining it, it always takes a novel reader in these reactions!
@@porkoh_jerme2586sirius also knew that subaru, rachins and the other people she pointed at wanted to attack or do something which is why she pointed at them to let them know she knows what they’re trying to do which caused hesitation for Subaru since he can only imagine what would happen if she were to retaliate violently. This is also why Subaru was trying to tell her to let them go but of course Sirius was already under control so it was too late by then
Also include this part. She basically subdued the wrath of everyone there: Subaru had been prepared to yell “what a joke”, but, before the words started leaving his mouth, he noticed that he had been included amongst the four people who Sirius had pointed a finger at when saying “do not be angry”. Looking around, he saw the other people who Sirius had pointed out-- They all seemed to possess some amount of skill. A demi-human with a sword at his waist, a woman in a blindfold, and Larkins, each sporting blushed faces. Those who had been named had all been people who had been prepared to take some action against Sirius. This was a warning that their plans had been seen through. Is it possible for you to drop this context each episode? I'm an anime-only and wasn't aware there was/is a novel for the show. I really do appreciate this, thanks!
Yes you got it right, they were all under her power the moment she clapped her hands. Her pointing specifically at Subaru and the other few people was to reinforce the control as they were still somewhat resisting it
It’s not only when their eyes turned red, it was way before that when she clapped her hands to get everyone’s attention that they fell under her control. Notice before how nervous Subaru was before she clapped her hands and then afterwards when he began to egg her on and yelled at the boy for crying. The red eyes were to reveal that they were being mind controlled the whole time.
it was simply a moment where the curtains were pulled to show you what was really happening behind the scene. to even assume that the control only took place once the effect was shown on screen would be very bad viewer etiquette
I know they are insane. It's great to see a studio deeply appreciate the material and take special care to deliver the story as best as possible. @@MrTimeattacker unfortunately re zero is so unique and well written most people with small brain just can't comprehend it. It's fascinating how re zero is so good is the reason why so many people hate it as well, cause they just don't get it and completely miss the point of the anime. like how recently 2 days ago the popular anime content creator gigguk in his tweet which got 5m views and 8 thousands replies asked people for their hottest takes on anime some of the top ones were by popular content creators and vtubers hating on re zero, saying subaru has no depth which just makes me laugh, and just disliking emilia and still being salty over rem while rem is a amazing character in anime emilia is arguably a much better character in both s1, s2. Notably and unsurprisingly pokimane also hates and dislikes re zero saying: "the suffering goes away everytime subaru restarts" which is like the dumbest and unreasonabLE take (just like most of her takes) on re zero and subaru I've seen. With that being said I'm glad there are still many people who recognize and acknowledge re zero as a masterpiece like notably mother's basement who stood up for re zero acknowledging it as a masterpiece by making a video against gigguk's video which argued it wasn't a masterpiece and ofc echidnut, which gives me hope and joy that there are still many anime fans that can see the charm of re zero, after all its the most anticipated and popular anime of the season and even arguably the whole year as well.

For context, the name Sirius gave, has the same last name as Geuse. Sirius has the exact same eye color as Emilia, and has Elf Ears (as shown in outline under the bandages). She has Silver Hair as well. I wanted to bring these all up because there is a theory about who Sirius actually is, and based on these clues already, the main theory is pretty obvious. However there is 1 point I want to bring up regarding this 'theory' that I have yet to see anyone talk about surprisingly. And its that, when we see the elves of Elior Forest, as far as I remember, NONE of them shared the same Hair/Eye color as Emilia/Fortuna/Satella. So one can assume that their Hair/Eye color is unique to their family line (explaining why they call Emilia the witch's daughter as she'd be of the direct bloodline, a distant relative to Satella if this theory of mine is correct). But that would also all but confirm that Sirius is without a doubt, Fortuna. Now of course this is all merely a theory, speculation based on the info currently available in the anime which is why I am fine sharing this theory. There are other clues as well that are more 'minor' but I wont go into those as they haven't been shown yet in the anime. But the evidence already available is pretty damning enough for me to be convinced.
@@testmandd possible, but again, if you take into account that only Emilia and her bloodline specifically share that hair/eye color combination, then the only options on who Sirius could be are 1. Fortuna revived (which there are spoiler reasons as to how that can happen that I wont say of course). and 2. Satella's corpse. Its possible that Satella's soul remains in the seal, but the corpse is what Sirius is. But I doubt the 2nd one, since there are just various pieces of evidence that unquestionably ties Sirius to Fortuna, some of which haven't been revealed yet such stuff related to her magic.
@testmandd you never know man. We had Pandora literally rewrite reality in Emilias memories. Imagine if after betelgeuse lost his mind, Pandora brought fortuna back in a similar manner and they get to live out their twisted "love" as crazy ass archbishop. Fortuna definitely died, but this shows got more than enough ways to make it make sense.
@@nexus2691 Exactly, I cant give examples as to why Pandora could easily bring back Fortuna (outside of what her own power does) because other examples would be spoilers that I wont go into. But its quite possible that Pandora used her powers to bring back Fortuna and changed her memories. As Pandora is shown to be able to manipulate memories. Which could further explain why Geuse didn't remember Emilia when he seen her dead in Subaru's arms, even in a 'maddened' state, he would have still had that memory, but he didn't, leading to the theory that Pandora altered his memories as well. So while its not 'confirmed' that Sirius is Fortuna, there is a mountain of solid evidence that backs up the theory to the point that I fully believe in it. Again the Hair/Eye Colors is already proof enough that Sirius has to be someone of the same bloodline as Emilia, and the only ones we've seen or heard of in the story so far are Satella, Emilia, Fortuna, and Emilia's father. Clearly its not her father, its not Emilia, its not Satella, leaving only a revived Fortuna as the most likely candidate.
Although I've had that very same theory for years now, I wanted to confirm something... and sure enough, Fortuna and Sirius do not share voice actors, even though they can sound similar at times. Was this intentional to make us look the other way? No clue but I'm just stating what I saw
Bro I would have been mad asf if my checkpoint was 10 mins before shit hits the fan. Usually hes got a couple of days before shit hits the fan, but not this time. We playing this arc on Expert Mode lol.
Unfortunately they don't tell you in the Anime but in the Light Novels is that right when Sirius introduced herself, Subaru immediately tried to send an SOS to Beatrice (like a spirit connection) but right when she clapped her hands is when everyone was cooked and controlled.
He tried to fight back until she clapped which was probably the trigger apparently in the light novel he tried to use his spirit connection to Beatrice till the clap
As an anime only, I am extremely hype for this arc. I loved the slow build up of tension. From the moment Regulus showed up on the street, something immediately felt off to me. I love Regulus. But him appearing anywhere is almost never good. The worst part is, we as the audience know how dangerous and powerful he is. But none of the characters do. Well, Emilia technically knows from when he showed up in her past. But she seemingly doesn't remember him. It must feel so awful for Subaru. Having a year of relative peace and quiet. Only to suddenly be thrown back into the horror of death. Something I immediately noticed was Sirius has the same last name as Petelgeuse. I only picked up on it because our Sloth boy said his full name constantly when introducing himself to Subaru. So it definitely stuck out to me. And she has a very similar eye color to Emilia and Fortuna. Her ears look very sharp under the bandages. I wonder if she's an elf too like Sheera was thinking.
I am a LN reader, I hope it fulfills your hype because man I know some people won’t like the slow pace this episode but really you don’t know how much building and foreshadowings this episode alone gave about next arcs. However I promise you the pacing will be so much faster in next episodes, it will get crazy.
He must be feeling sick because of the mind control i cant imagine how that feels to be you but not be you and not in control while being filled with weird fanatic emotions and having your head scrambled with other peoples feelings and then death.
Explanation: Sirius, the wrath archbishop, uses hand gestures and visual contact to initiate her "control", allowing her to impose her emotions on everyone connected to her. To summarize, she controlled them by clapping her hands and then forced the connection after pointing at Subaru, because he was resisting. More will be explained later, so let the anime cook, enjoy please and don't judge Subaru for something he had no fault for.
@@gamerforlife3946 This comment is a great explanation as to what happened I was here to type that myself. As an add on when Sirius clapped and it cut to suburu he was trying to call Beatrice but couldn’t because of the clap.

Sheera was right about Sirius, she has the same name as Beltegueuse, she has silver hair, she has elf ears, she has the same eyes as Emilia, and she is kinda obsessed with "love", one of the fan theories is that Sirius is actually Fortuna (Emilia's step-mother).

I recommend watching Echidnut he always gives info the was cut or might seem confusing, Aninews is better but he has only made videos on season 2 so far
Anime only here: I got a crazy theory. i think the sin archbishop representing wrath might be mother fortuna. The reason i say this is because 1. She has a crazy obsessive love for betelgeuse and as we all know from emilia's flashbacks in season 2 it was fairly obvious that mother fortuna and betelgeuse had a mutual affection for one another. What i think might have happened is the with cultists may have taken mother fortuna's body a while after the forest froze over and augmented it, turning her psycho similar to what happened to geuse(despite him making himself turn psycho but i think the way it might have been done to fortuna may have been the same as geuse). 2. All the characters do not look the same for no reason as you guys implied, if characters look similar it's for a reason because up til this point excluding the ryuzu's that were just clones, we haven't seen any other elves in the story other than those emilia's backstory(and even then only fortuna and emilia had silver hair and purple eyes from what was shown to us excluding emilia's father who was said to have the same) and satella herself. And with that in mind from what we knew, the elven forest where emilia lived was frozen over by emilia and as far as we know that was the only elven settlement, especially one with which geuse made regular trips to and from so where else could sirius have come from and who else could she possibly be other than fortuna? Just speculation but i believe i might be right.
Yea this is the one that locked me into the franchise. The next made me peak. Tbh 7/8 arent bad but the introduction of so many new places and characters kinda bogged it down for me.

in the novel Subaru was actually trying to call on Beatrice as soon as she said she was an archbishop but when Sirius clapped the will to do that also went away
Amazing first episode! I was genuinely surprised to see that you guys really believed everyone was ok with what Sirius was doing lol. Her authority is going to be a problem!
Thing that was cut :30:30 was Subaru in the last year able to talk to Beatrice indirectly he was trying to call to her in that moment so she can teleport to him, he didn't want to leave simply to know what is going on and try to protect whom he can which we all see he couldn't do shit basically. at that clap moment he is under her control all of them were, so it was done for him and the rest.
Apart from what Subaru witnessed, which was what made him react like this, the fact that he had not used the return by death for 1 year had an influence, so he had already forgotten the feeling of returning.
Some fun (or not so fun, this is Re:zero after all) facts. The reason this episode was so long is because the director just couldn't have a Re:zero season that starts without Subaru dying... and I mean aye it worked cause this was a banger of an opener, couldn't imagine having to sit through 4 or so episodes of all that stuff that happened before the latter 1/3 of this ep, would've been a bit of a sleeper of an opening episode imo which I'd be fine with, just public reception probably wouldn't have been very good. Also Regulus Corneas, the guy Emilia bumps into on the street was indeed in the previous season and as Roshi said he was one of the people who stopped the carriages Rem was in BUT the biggest part he played in the season was in Emilia's flashback of her childhood that was used as her trial inside the sanctuary, he was one of the people who caused everything that happened to Emilia and Betelguese, long story short he was a fucking PROBLEM. AND Sheera is 100% onto something with the Archbishop Of Wrath having some sort of relation to Emilia because if you look really closely at her design (I'm surprised i caught this myself), under the bandages you can actually see she has pointy ears which are (as far as i know) unique to Emilia's tribe and are also a sign of the Witch Of Envy, Satella. aaaand I'm pretty sure i had a 4th fact but i forgot ;P
Its called being confused not gaslighting gaslighting is when you manipulate someone into believing they are crazy gaslighting is NOT FUN dont use that word so lightly it disgusts me
(anime only) Here's something happy to think about. A For no obvious reason, the show demonstrated a PA system that works over the entire city. B Sirius (Wrath) said she was doing a test run. There's no way she's not going to try and kill everybody in the city.
Just wanted to let y'all know that Subaru was under the effects the very first time Sirius clapped her hands. When she did that, everyone in the crowd tensed up, and that was the beginning of them being under her control. I also liked how the episode takes place a year after the last season, sort of implying Subaru likely hadn't died in a long time. It makes him dying again at the end of the episode that more impactful since he'd likely gotten used to live outside of Return by Death.
Yep.
There's actually another reason why Subaru says that he feels sick. Subaru didn't lose the memory of being under Sirius ability and was disgusted by himself cheering on the situation he just witnessed
There's a lot going on behind that reaction by Subaru:
1) He is sickened and ashamed of what Sirius's authority did to him and what it made him do.
May I point out that Re:Zero has started Every Season with a Return By Death scenario? At the very least, I remember Season 1 started that way.

31:42 *This is the reason why Subaru didn't run before Sirius clapped, everything has a justification and here I leave the small excerpt of the same scene but in the light novel:*
Rachins kept an eye on what was going on overhead as he moved through the crowd towards Subaru, who also couldn't take his eyes off the eccentric figure, even though he was standing apart from the rest of the crowd.
For some reason, he realized that letting his attention slip would be an irrevocable mistake. There was no need to doubt the individual's identity.
-That was exactly the same malice Petelgeuse had. _“Besides, Romaneé-Conti?”_
The surname the eccentric blindfold had invoked: Romanée- Conti, just like Petelgeuse.
Of course, since Petelgeuse had been an evil spirit, a blood relative sharing the same name was highly unlikely, but....
_“Don't tell me that all the Archbishops of the Seven Deadly Sins use the same surname...”_
The existence of a famous Romanée-Conti family within the Witch Cult producing Archbishops one generation after another was such a twisted concept that even the thought of it was enough to make Subaru wrinkle his nose.
_“-That's enough!”_
_“¡¿-?!”_
But his attempt to call out to Beatrice was interrupted, abruptly, by a dry, piercing sound.
@@porkoh_jerme2586 Sirius is a woman. “He” is masculine.

Yes you got it right, they were all under her power the moment she clapped her hands. Her pointing specifically at Subaru and the other few people was to reinforce the control as they were still somewhat resisting it

I miss naruto
not trying to spoil but they were clapped as soon as she said the first word , like she’s a problem
Observing that she wanted them to calm down, do we counter her Authority with strong emotion that's opposite of the emotion she wants?
It’s not only when their eyes turned red, it was way before that when she clapped her hands to get everyone’s attention that they fell under her control. Notice before how nervous Subaru was before she clapped her hands and then afterwards when he began to egg her on and yelled at the boy for crying. The red eyes were to reveal that they were being mind controlled the whole time.
it was simply a moment where the curtains were pulled to show you what was really happening behind the scene. to even assume that the control only took place once the effect was shown on screen would be very bad viewer etiquette

Unfortunately it's probably a red herring fortuna is definitely dead

Time to spoil

24:00 damn i really hoped the editor would add in a lil nas x joke bc of the song sounding exactly like that one lil nas song at the start
I been waiting for this since yesterday to see y’all’s reaction… the ending caught me so off guard 💀
W Video!(I Will Say That Sirius Had Everyone Under Her Authority/Mind Control The Moment Say Clapped Her Hands)
29:41 here we go again with yoshi gaslighting sheera. it's the exact same color eyes as emelia
Lol it's like sometimes they refuse to be right when it comes to re zero
Its called being confused not gaslighting gaslighting is when you manipulate someone into believing they are crazy gaslighting is NOT FUN dont use that word so lightly it disgusts me
Its called being confused sheera has done it to them too dont start trying to make people mad or be toxic
@@ether2788 tf are you yapping about mate, the only one getting mad here is you and no one was being toxic. you need to chill out
@@ether2788calm tf down
(anime only)
Here's something happy to think about.
A For no obvious reason, the show demonstrated a PA system that works over the entire city.
B Sirius (Wrath) said she was doing a test run.
There's no way she's not going to try and kill everybody in the city.
Bruh they dont know about the Al lore, better be explained this season oh my goddddd
"Hey big guy.. sun's getting real low" 😭😭😭
