I learned how to skate by my mom dropping me off at the skating ring and leaving me there on Saturdays. You put skates on and just went around until you stopped falling. 😂

Me too. I was never taught how to skate. I had to visually learn from watching everyone else. Crazy journey. Because it's so many different ways to master your own style.

I skated in my 20's with a new friend after I moved up north. But since then (fast forward 40 years), I'm now a cancer survivor. And the chemo treatments did a huge number on my lower legs, ankles, & feet. I'm now wearing AFO leg braces. If I was to ever try skating again, I highly doubt if I'd ever return to skating as good as I did when I was younger. Yeah, It's amazing excercise, but I doubt if I can ever skate again normally without a skate mate cause I'm disabled. Sorry. 😐

That is how I learned. My parents threw me out the door with just heavy traffic at the end of the hill. I never told anybody this because I thought it was just my parents. I'm glad we both survived the 70's 😂

Your description of learning to skate back in the 70's was spot on-had me laughing. I remember falling on gravel and my Mom had to use a tweezer to pick the little pebbles out of my knee. I was right back outside with my skates on and my bandaged knee!

Back on skates after 20 years...definitely relearning everything with a 41 year old body! The first time out was exciting until I realized I’m not a rubbery kid anymore...I was up for about 20 minutes before I called it a day after a HUGE butt slam 😆 I think I’ll borrow my sister’s jogging stroller until I get my muscles and balance back. My husband bought me a pair of Moxi Lollys as a wedding gift a year ago...I love them way too much to give up!

Thank you for including those of us that have not been on skates for a few decades, lol. You are dead on, it does not come back when you step out on that rink after such an absence from the sport. Your channel has encouraged and inspired me, you are a true gem for all ages. As always your humor and your animated way of teaching is truly what resonates when it comes to retaining your content. Yes, I have to say it again, I was dying laughing at your do’s and don’ts for this trainer. Yes, I just purchased one, yes it will be my partner for a little bit, however, you will always be my go to for skater education. Thank you for all of your videos and time you take to upload. You are appreciated!

I'm 57, hadn't skated (roller or ice) for twenty years. Back then though I was very comfortable skating forward, backwards to an extent, and that was it. Went back to it about 8 months ago. Sure it was like starting over but after four months of going three times a week I was back to my old self. So barring any serious medical issues, no, it is not a problem going back to it when you are 60. I have learned to do things I never did. Like one foot glides and on ice skates I've learned to stop. Things I couldn't do before. I roll my eyes now when people my age say it's too late. No it's not. Greatest desicion I've made. There are a few other people my age taking lessons and actually doing it also. But yeah, that first month or two was kind of rough as far as being nervous on the rink, but persistence has paid off for me. If you want to go back, go for it, and realize it will take time, but it is possible for us older people. At the ice rink there's a somewhat beginniner who has to be getting close to his 80s if not there already. We are kind of the oddballs though. Most everyone is young, or really good if older. Mostly I do ice, but roller once a month. I go ice because the roller rink is always so crowded. I guess my point is, don't go by your first night back on the rink. Give it time and practice before you decide it's too late to go back.

Thank you for this. I have a disability that effects my balance at times (I periodically use a cane to walk). I used to be a dedicated skater and have wanted to come back to it but have been unsure how to do it. I can't re learn the way I did when I was younger (your introduction was 100% me, the neighbor at the bottom of the hill was constantly having to mend their chain link fence because we would just crash into it like a big net, lol). My covid pod has recently gotten into skating and we are talking about renting a rink, I was feeling really bummed that I would have to sideline but I think a skate mate might just make it doable for me.
@ the occasional person bitching about ppl using adaptive aids ie skate mate, saying the would never let their kid learn that way; consider some kids have delayed motor skill development and kindly refrain from being an ableist jerk. Accessibility matters.

I'm 46 with a disability. I use my walking cane while I've been relearning to skate. I've tackled ramps twice and lost twice and still can't skate backwards haha. It's hard to skate how you want to, how you're meant to, when physically challenged. I have limited mobility from the lumber down, but I'm on skates, and I'm moving forward and I'm proud of myself...16 years ago I didn't think I'd ever get back on them again...I'm a wonky donkey on feet let alone wheels. I hope you got a chance to try and experience that rollerskating rush again .

I bought the stroller SPECIFICALLY to use as a skate mate because I just wasn't progressing without it. I have now reached my goal of skating to my mailbox down the street and back on the rough asphalt. Idc if I look silly. I CAN SKATE NOW! That's awesome. I hope though that I can get rid of it all together soon and do it all by myself.

😔 I created an "addictive relationship with the skate mate". I never had skates when I was a little girl. I started learning 1 month ago because I want to learn at the same time with my 6 years old son. Every Saturday I am better and I improved a lot but only if I have a skate mate with me. Thank you for your videos, I started practicing almost every day at least 15 minutes in my garage with a cane and I practice postures and some exercises. I want to be good even if it's in basic skating.

Im not sure if you seen the video that recently came out where 2 gals were fighting at a rink over a skate mate.. That was a local rink to me. The rink I call home had them when they first opened but they had to many issues so they opted to get rid of them. One of Mom's sisters ran a small rink out of an old school gymnasium for a while, with the I'm guessing rubber composition wheels and loose ball bearings. Pitched forward and fell onto my left forearm so many times I had a giant bruise by the end of the day. I wanted so badly to get another chance, but didn't until a couple of decades later well into the inline era.
Sure wish I could clone you and have you come to our rink here in Indiana.

Skating was (is) one of my passions, I could do it for hours on end every day. Then school got in the way and in a field trip from high school we went to a skating rink. I wasn't sure I'd be able to skate after all those years, but lo and behold it was like I had skated the day prior 😱 about 30 years have gone by and I want to get a pair of skates and I am positive I'll be able to skate just fine 😎 of course, I'm watching many of your videos to practice in my head lol I still don't have my skates, I haven't even found a place to go skating but am determined to do a come back 💖

I see kids standing on the lower bar and the parents pushing the kid around on them. This breaks the lower bar and the kid never learns to skate. Or kids get them and race with them. Kids that know how to skate get them and race each other. But there are a few kids that use them the way they were intended. A few.

They are a great tool. Too bad kids get them and use them in ways that they are not designed. But, it's really the rinks fault for letting it go on. I do so wish that they would inforce the rink rules. When I was growing up the rink owner ran a tight ship. Also I think that parents were more responsible too. Now, it seems like a free for all at the rink that I go to. The manager and owner are afraid of offending people and them not coming back. That's the only reason I can think of. Of course it's the people that the owner hires also. They just skate around and let people get away with anything.

I've seen the video of kids at your rink using these. Super cute.
I grew up in the 80s. I had metal strap on skates. I wish I had been able to go to a rink more often.

ok that's it! I am NOW a subscriber! You are So Funny... I was dying at your recall of the ole metal wheels... I remember :) I was a daily skater in the 90's then life got in the way. Last Thursday I learned that there was an indoor rink in my area so I went - it DID come back to me but only 3 hours was not enough... going again tonight :) thank you for ALL your lessons! I've been binge-watching your videos and its helping!!! Thank you Dirty

Hey I commented on one of your videos awhile back on how to skate or something like that I think. Well I finally got my skates a couple months back and I'm skating everyday and these videos really motivate me to keep skating and trying new things.

We had a deep dip called The Sugar Dip. Stand at the crest and take off, going at least 40mph, walk back up in the grassy shoulders and do it all over again, thousands of times!!!

I still have a scar from skinned knees back in the day. Hill-bombing in my white vinyl Roller Derby skates with clay wheel will do that to a kid! :D Learned to skate outdoors when I was three and loved it from the second my little Fisher Prices clacked-clacked down the sidewalk.

I remember those metal skates, what i first learned to skate on. Now after a 30 year break i am attemting to learn all over again - it's actually scary this time around though

I look at these skate mates and imagine them sliding much faster than me as I struggle to keep my balance and thus making it flip and then I end up face on the ground with arms stretched forward still holding the mate 😅 kinda like you showed that will happen if gripping closer to the middle, but I imagine it for holding on the red, too. It's reassuring to know that it actually is helpful!

You forgot to mention those pesky expansion seams in the concrete that were filled with some kind of soft tarry substance that stopped those metal skate wheels cold. Ah yes, fond memories.

My attempt to get back on skates after 30 years resulted in a broken coccyx after just 2 minutes.
No rinks in my Country have these but I can really see the benefits of it.
    I really want one.

That's too funny 🤣 That's how I learned to skate. The way I have seen people use the skate mate is funny. But sadly I need it because I forgot how to balance. It's been decades.
