who is this guy you ask? well, you're about to begin a journey that ends with only one destination - your being convinced that he is one of the greatest to ever live, if not the greatest 🙃

I have been listening to Guthrie since I was 12 and since then my perception of the guitar and music has changed. His appearance on the guitar music scene completely changed everything and he very freshly renewed how we see the electric guitar. Today I am 30 years old.

I have been watching Guthrie perform for decades. He is from my home town, Chelmsford, in Essex, and played, as he still occasionally does, with his original band, The Fellowship, featuring the amazing Zak Barratt on sax, Pete Riley on drums, and Guthrie's brother Seth, on bass. Guthrie has no ego, and will talk to anyone, especially if you buy him beer. If you want to see him really show off, have a look at what he can do with a fretless guitar.

Check out the track "The Raven That Refused To Sing" from Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree). Guthrie solo is perfect or that song and he came up with it right as they were recording.

This song is from Guthries album Erotic Cakes which also features his brother Seth on Bass. Govan is pronounced like oven. Check out Guthrie with the band The Aristocrats. I recommend Get It Like That from Culture Clash Tour - Tokyo 👍🤘✌️

Wow, I hadn't heard this one before! I love Guthrie Govan every time I see him play online. Maybe one day I'll watch him play live. Another favourite of mine that you can find on UA-cam is Bullet Blues - some great surprising arpeggios in that one, typically inventive from him. His playing fascinates and astonishes me. I'm not a guitarist, by the way, but it's obvious to anyone with any interest in music that he's at the top of the game.

Amazing and needs to be exposed more!
Reminds me a little of the late, great Mr Allan Holdsworth!
    Cheers and thanks m8!

Watch his live stuff. Guthrie is THE master at improvisation. There’s a great video of him with Hans Zimmer doing an improv solo. It will make you rethink what is possible.

The guy is most definitely a good guitarist. However, I think that if one closes one's eyes this could be Stevie Vai, Joe Satriani or one of the multitude of guitar players who have graduated from Guitar College. Please don't get me wrong, he is very skilled, all the tapping etc, but at the end of the day it's all about the music and sound and this is not unique. Just check out the hundreds of guitarists on UA-cam for example, they all sound so similar. I still enjoyed watching him though.
I'll leave you with a quote from the great Gary Moore, "I learnt to play guitar to get away from school. These guys go to school to learn to play the guitar!"
    Regards to everyone .

Guthrie Govan is self-taught by listening & experimenting on his own.
Maybe a little 'research' before publicly & erroneously judging an other's talent?
Guthrie didn't learn it in 'schools' ... he 'schools' others &:-)
Oh, like Gary, Guthrie left his "English" studies to pursue music (outside of schools).
Something else about "hundreds of guitarists on UA-cam" ... making videos sitting at home and writing, arranging & finding and working successfully with a group of musicians who can and will perform complex compositions true-to-form & manage a good video/audio recording?
A completely different skill-set requiring social skills as well as musical talent.
The two 'musical formats' ought not be confused, imo.

@@dregeye My friend, at no point in my comment did I say that he went to any Guitar College or School. I am not stupid enough to make a comment like that without do any research.
I quite simply said that whilst I acknowledge his playing skills, to my ears he sounds the same as hundreds of other guitarists, a lot of whom have been through a guitar college course and appear on UA-cam.
Therefore, please do not infer things that I have not actually stated. If you like this guy and consider him to be the best guitarist, that is your prerogative.
As I said, I quite enjoyed watching him, however to be perfectly honest here, there was no 'feeling' in his playing as far as I'm concerned.
Maybe you can suggest something else by him that might change my mind. I honestly try to be open minded and I am always interested in discovering new music and musicians that I like. However, I will always give an honest opinion and if you do not agree with that, then I am sorry.
      Regards to you anyway.

@@stevehanham9266 what I accounted was strongly implied in your comment, without which your Gary Moore quote would be off-topic/irrelevant on a Govan video. imo.
?? (quoting you) " Therefore, please do not infer things that I have not actually stated. If you like this guy and consider him to be the best guitarist, that is your prerogative. " ??
You could have said "thanks for the info" but chose to "infer" onto me "consider him to be the best guitarist" when I didn't even comment on his playing, only how he developed his playing in relation to Gary Moore's approach that you 'implied' that you have great respect for. He is one among many to me, but not 'school taught' is all.
Regardless, thank you for the information you shared with me, that replying to you with accurate info on a subject is a pointless endeavor. I will honor that knowledge with my absence in replying.
Your approach to analysis & conclusions (& reluctance to showing appreciation for accurate information that is volunteered) leads me away from sharing art with you.
Best wishes for a good life !

He really doesn't sound anything like Vai or Satriani, at any point ever.
