Use one teaspoon canning salt (free of anti caking agents or other foreign substances) per pint of water to make sterile normal saline which is a fantastic wound wash.
I have this canner, too, and using it the first time was a nightmare due to lack of instructions in the booklet. To make matters worse, I couldn't find anything online that even resembled it. That was about 7 years ago, and it has been sitting in the cupboard ever since. I'm planning on a lot of canning this year so it's time to dust it off and getting it steaming, and videos like this are a big help. Time to dive back in, with a great deal more assurance than I started with.
I am a pressure canner virgin! This video was exactly what I needed as I recently purchased this same canner. The directions that came with it were lacking on how the weight gauge worked and how to test it. Thank you so much!
LoL me too, I've just been staring at it for a couple of months . I was super intermediate and considering returning it to Walmarts. I felt like finding this video was a big blessing and confidence boost! Happy canning!
I got this canner 9 years ago and never used it for the same reason. Directions didn't really tell you how to use it or get the weight apart. It's taken years for anyone to do a video on this particular canner. I'm usinit for the first time. I'm so excited but nervous at the same time.
When my mother gave me her old canner last year, she took it to the county extension office. They tested it for her. And told her the pressure gauge was not reading correctly. Bought a new one, and I was good to go. Last year was my first year canning. Love your channel. Happy new year and thanks for all you do!
I haven't canned in about 7 years. I am retired now and just wanted to get a refresher for my 16 qt presto. Thanks so much for this video. It answered all of my questions.
Dear Heather, back when Covid started. I felt the need to get back into canning but I had never pressure canned before. I ordered a 16 quart Presto Pressure Canner from Amazon. And I paid way too much for it at that time. LOL My canner arrived and I was scared to use it until I came across this video! Wow I was soooo excited! Well the rest is history. I love pressure canning! And you have taught me well! I want to thank you so much for this video! This is a great beginner video! And It gave me the confidence I needed to try pressure canning! I can’t tell you how many times I watched this video LOL Thank you so much for all you have taught me. I deeply appreciate it! I now feel like I can share my knowledge and experiences here on UA-cam and have been creating videos. Soon I will posting my first canning video and it is all thanks to you! God Bless you in every way! Sincerely, Shauna AKA Nana The Canner 😁
@@nanathecanner exactly my experience coming across this video. Heck, I was so freaked out scare to use it, I was ready to take it back to Walmarts and forget about it. LoL now I'm feeling totally confident and ready to rock and roll. Happy canning to you!
I bought one of these 7 yrs ago, said I was going to get into canning and was gonna get serious about it. I had a water bath canner and had been using it 4 or 5 yrs. Then I fell into a really bad depression and everything went downhill. Then 4 yrs ago we had a house fire. My husband found it the other day in his shed. He said it needed replacement parts but it should be fine. I ordered them so we'll see. I will be referring back to this when my parts come in and I do a test run. TY so much for the video.
Thank you for doing this video. I'm new at canning. I originally purchased an All American Canner and watched several of your videos before feeling confident enough to begin canning. Once I did, I came to realize it was too large for my electric stove to bring the weight up to 15 pounds which is required for my attitude. I sadly returned it but then purchased a 16 quart Presto. Was happy to see you doing a test run of this brand of canner for those of us who don't have the All American Canner. Thank you!
So helpful, have waterbathed for years, never had a pressure canner, found a vintage 1971 12qt presto canner cooker at good will for $7.69, small but large enough for us, ordered new gasket and air vent, you did a beautiful job of explaining every step, thank you.
Love the way you break everything down and make it easy to understand. I am planning on getting a canner next year when we move and I build my garden. I am so excited to start planning everything I want to do. You have taught me so much Heather, thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! I just bought this exact canner, and it’s my first time pressure canning! I’m so intimidated, and this video is exactly what I needed. I’m actually running a test run right along with the video! You’re the best! ☺️
My husband just got me a new 915 Presto pressure canner today after we found out my glass/ceramic top stove is rated for canning! I will be canning tomorrow! 😃👍🏻
MY WIFE WATCHES YOU AND IS QUITE HAPPY WITH YOUR SITE..WE MOVED TO FLORIDA IN 1983 FROM TEMPERANCE, MI. KEEP UP YOUR GREAT WORK WE APPRECIATE YOUR SHOW. MY WIFE IS NEW TO CANNING.
I thought this was wonderful and I don't even can. You were so thorough...every step explained...reminded me of being examined by a doctor. Great video...keep it up. I can't wait to see the new canner.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!! For posting this♡♡♡ I have a brand new Presto Pressure canner 16 qt.... had NOOOO idea how to even use it until this video. It has a weight too and I'm so thankful you used the weight. I'm feeling super confident now. Getting excited♡ about to go pressure can 30 lbs of Pueblo Green Chili's and 40 lbs of homegrown corn! Cannot wait for more canning videos again! Praying for a fast recovery!
I'm a little late to the party and I am very green in the canning or food preservation arena. This was so helpful. I followed right along with you doing a test run on some fresh green beans with smoked turkey and baby potatoes (All precooked except for the potatoes). I still have some time left after setting the 30 minute timer. I do feel pretty good about them. Thanks for making it easy to follow along with.
I have that canner. I had my moms from years ago and I bought myself a new one this year too. I also found a bunch of old jars and ran a test run with water in them to make sure they were all good.
Oh my goodness! Now you WILL have two 15 quart canners. YAY. You will so enjoy those. I love mine. They heat up and cool down so much faster than the larger All Americans too. How exciting. Yes, I want to see your newest baby. xoxoxo from Ohio
Thank you so much. I just bought one from an estate sale and was cautioned on how to use it. Great tutorial! I will clean it up and do a test run then get to canning. God bless you
Hey Heather! Just found this old video in my search. I inherited my mom's old canner and needed to test it along with a slightly used one I purchased. Loved watching you as usual. It was helpful. Thanks ❤🙏
Just wanted to say thank younso much for making this video. I have never used or seen a pressure cooker before but after 4yrs of wanting to get one i got this exact canner this week brand new. I tried to use it today and i could not get my jiggler to work. I think maybe it has something to do with not letting the air out for 10minutes in the beginning but i will try again tomorrow. Im a visual learner so this video definitely helped me alot :) thank you so much :)
My canning supplies come Fri so I'm excited to watch your days and Linda's. I'm just water bath canning. I'm making your grape jelly recipe. I'm scared a little but looking forward to trying it. 😊

You probably have a ton of comments like this. But first time canning and this absolutely helped me understand how the machine works. & what to look for. Thank you!
I do waterbath, dehydrating, ferments, but i am so afraid to do pressure canning. My husband and son say NO to it. Im 68. So i will just watch the videos. You and Mrs. Volfie from our half acre homestead are such great teachers. Thank you. Pat
I have this canner and also a glass top electric stove. At first I was removing the canner from the burner for cool down but found that it was too fast and my jars were siphoning. Now I leave it on the burner just turn the burner off. I go very slow in reducing the pressure and that has worked for me. I did a test run before I used my canner so I could find my sweet spot on the burner to know where I can turn it for the duration of the canning process. Great video, thanks!
Ooh I’d love to see the 915. I have the 921, then got the 930 so I can double stack quarts since I do allot of big batches. But I’m wishing I also had a 915 lol. Is there ever too many? Is there?? 😉
Thank you just got my presto yesterday for this year garden season. Always water bath so you took all my fears away with your step by step instructions again thanks you took all my fears away
Oh Heather, that is a nice pot. And showing us which is wise to see if it works properly before you put the real decoy inside and find out it leaks or whatever. I’m so glad it was successful .Looking forward to your unboxing new one. I’m excited too my friend. 👍👍🌹🌹
That's the exact canner that I have. Although I like the flat "jiggler" better than the round ones. This presto replaced my old Mirro that I had for 20 years!
I was gifted a new Presto that started my journey. I was recently gifted an All American 921. It had been sitting, never used, for 20+ years. I've had it out to pet on several times, but haven't been brave enough to use her yet.
Karen D , Don't be afraid of that canner Girl . I have one and love , love , love it . I know it is big and at first a little scary looking but not difficult to use at all and you will love it too. I can just hear you saying " oh now what can I can next " . Break that canner open and have some fun ! Blessing's , Linda
I have 2 old Mirros. I bought an All American 5 years ago, and have used it once. I guess I'm a creature of habit, and just love my Mirro canners, with the 'clatter' disc weight. I can tell exactly what's happening, from 30 feet away, by the sound.
Thank you for your video. I brought the same pressure canner this week. I'm new to canning and needed help to understand how to use it correctly. I don' t have anyone in my family who know how to Can food.
This was So Helpful for me because I’m a Newbie to canning. I just got the Presto Canner with the weighted gage. I’m going to test mine out just like that.
Thank you for your video I just got my Preston canner and did the water canning as you instructed it was kind of intimidating at first but I did it I guess the best part is is when I remove the jars and started hearing them pop and I knew I did it right wish y'all had more recipes with that type of canner, so thank you so much for your help.
HIYA sister friend :-D (Although, I am old enough to be your mother. LOL!) I just celebrated my 65th birthday at the end of November. About 30 years ago, my mom gifted me a Presto pressure canner. Mine was a bit different model, with a handle on it, and the lid had a handle on it, too, so that when you put the lid on it, and lined up the handles, it locked in place. I noticed something on your pot ... there is an L-shaped bracket located inside, between the 2 handles. That is how mine looked inside. I could not see the entire inside when you held up the cover, but, I'm sure if you look closely, you will see the "locking latch" in the rim. It looks like a flat lip as wide as the bracket inside. If you can't find it, shake the lid, and follow the sound. When you twist the cover, those two should line up. Now ... I told you all that just to tell you this: on my model, (and it might not be the same for yours, IDK), there were problems with the locking mechanism not unlatching. In which case, you will not be able to remove the lid. All is not lost, though. Simply take a butter knife, and carefully reach down inside to release the latch from the bracket. I had a corned beef brisket in mine, so it didn't matter if I was jiggling it around a little bit. I cannot imagine how you would do it with it being full of canning jars. You might need a second set of hands. I just thought maybe you, and others, might want to know if this would ever happen to you. I haven't done any canning since the gardening season of 2014. My mom came to live with me in June of 2015, and the majority of my time was caring for her. As far back as I can remember, I was always there in the kitchen with her, helping her can, freeze & dehydrate. Her methods were different than today's, but, they worked ;) It's going to be tough for me to haul out the canner again, because now she's not here to either do it with me, or even be present in the kitchen when I am. January 10th will mark the one year anniversary. She was 92. It's been quite the mountain to climb this past (almost) year. :`( Thank you for doing this series *Jar it up January*. You have given me the inspiration I needed. You're very special to me. I hope you know that! We used to watch your videos together. She LOVED it when I tried your recipes!!! She especially loved the cinnamon raisin bread. I know my mom would want me to get back into the swing of things. I'm going to try my best ... God bless you & your family
Yes hugs and prayers. I've too lost a loved one recently and finding it hard to get back into the swing of things. Too many memories at times, but it's a healing process. Hold on too Jesus my friend He will get you there.
I am so excited! I just watched this because my hubs got me a Presto for Christmas. But on your suggestion I checked Facebook and found a gently used All American 910!!!!!! Squeeeeeeeee!!!!
I love my Presto 32 quart and have used it for years without fail. I recently inherited 2 very used All American canners that are much smaller and I’m excited to clean them up and get them ready to use. Thanks for the info. Heidi at Rain Country and Suttons Days have also had videos on used canners. I’ll be looking for Paul’s as well. Thank you again! Always good information. God bless. 🥰
Thank you for showing this! (I just finished a test run of a new Presto 16 today...forgot to add vinegar to water....maybe that is why it really discolored the bottom of the canner? Or it didn't like my well water!)
I have two of these, they work well. I run both at the same time! I just bought another one from the 1970's at a thrift store for $10. Need to put it to the test. I will be canning soon. Happy New year!
Yes MS Heather, would love to see the test run of the 915. I bought the 9:15 in October. I've used it some since I got it. Got a good Buy in ham an pork butt so will try to do that toward the middle or end of January stop. Take care. God bless you and yours. Congrats on the new Canna
Patricia Carson , I have canned for several years but had not canned pork . My first batch was pork loin and it was so tough ! I then heard that was the cut of meat and not to can pork loin but can pork butt and it would be tender . My question is have you ever canned pork or pork butt and what do you think ? Thank's and have a blessed New Year , Linda (I love m All American 921 and now looking for another or maybe 915)
Heather can the 16 quart Presto Pressure Cooker Canner be double stacked with half pint jars and a divider. I am a single person and cannot eat pints or quarts. Who would you recommend to find out this information?
I do have a question ,the little pop up lock ,does it also indicate that air is out and the pot is full of all steam ,and i should wait till it pops up before putting the weight jiggle thingy on right?
Hello!!! Hope you see this. You mentioned canning distilled water. I have 5 plastic gallon jugs I bought from the store. Should I can this distilled water? Is there a Benefit? Thank so much!!! Love and learn SO much from you!!!
I’m just picking on u because I like your great video, I really mean that. My old international starting getting pits in it and I got me a presto with a weight like yours and have a new all American canner coming 👍🙏❄️❤️
I have this exact canner, which I bought new about a year ago, just before I bought the 921. It's a great little canner, and I like the fact that it's lighter weight than the 921. Because I have this one, I'm leaning toward purchasing the 910...but the 915 is a possibility. Decisions, decisions, decisions! lol
I am knew to pressure canning, although I have done water bath canning before, I can hardly wait to start. I purchased a New 23 qt Presto Induction Canner. The reason I did this is that I have a smooth top stove and wanted the extra heavy base as I have heard some of the regular canners can have issues on smooth top ranges. At least with the induction canner I can use it on every type of stove out there. I am hoping to get a Gas Range when we move to our newer home ;-) Thanks for the video it was really helpful.
My boyfriends mom is going to let me use her Presto canner until I get one of my own and I’m so glad I found this video. I always watch your canning videos and want an All American so bad, so using a Presto has me intimidated. Thanks for filming this!!!
Watching from Victoria Australia, loved your video ive subscribed, i would have liked to have seen the flame under the pot, when you reached that sweet spot just to get a fuller picture, I've bought an all American canner waiting for its first use, im so excited to start saving food for a later date, easy dinners. As i have seen this video 11 months after it was made i am going to go find your next one testing your American canner, sharing information is what we all should be doing 🌹
I test run my 12 qt. Mirro at 15 psi after I replaced all the rubber parts just to be sure everything was pressure tight. By the way, did you see my portable soup video? It's right up your alley. :)
That has a water mark line inside as well as stating 3qts. I always add 1 additional pint as it almost ran dry on me once. Walmart ran the same one on sell in October for 39dollars. I grabbed one as that is cheaper than a Dutch oven. So now I have two canners. Yeahhhh Good video...thanks for sharing. All parts can be purchased if necessary. Waiting patiently for January vids. Happy New Year everyone and blessings always.
Help! I was ready to add my weight but there was a tiny bit of moister coming out of the valve and the rubber dot thingy. So I was nervous and didn’t put the weight on. Turned off the heat and messaged you. I’ve only used my Presto canner twice about 10 years ago. I checked the gasket and cleaned the rubber dot thingy and the other metal dot thingy. Should I have continued? So annoyed because I have ham stock I wanted to can tonight. Thank you for all of your videos!

Love it. You’re a pro!
Thank you for your video. I brought the same pressure canner this week. I'm new to canning and needed help to understand how to use it correctly. I don' t have anyone in my family who know how to Can food.
You are so welcome!
Prayers sent.
This was So Helpful for me because I’m a Newbie to canning. I just got the Presto Canner with the weighted gage. I’m going to test mine out just like that.
I just found an old 16 qt canner to add to my 23 quart canner to make quarts and jelly/jams...so excited!! Thanks Heather!!
Congrats on your new canning adventure! I have LOTS of canning videos....have fun and happy canning!!!!
@@TheKneadyHomesteader can’t wait to see more of your videos very helpful and thank you for your time.
This is such a helpful video to new canners! I remember how stressed I was the first time I tried out my presto
Our pressure canner is very similar, and has served us well for many years... Thank you for sharing your thoughts !
Happy New Year Mark and Tina!😁💋💋💋
That’s a good little canner Heather.
THANK YOU. The directions were sooooooo confusing. And there are NO videos like this without a gauge.
YAY! I am so glad I made this then! These are the videos that I wish I had to watch! haha
Hugs to you 💕
@@monicag.1527 Thank you, Monica G. Hugs to you, too!
Yes hugs and prayers. I've too lost a loved one recently and finding it hard to get back into the swing of things. Too many memories at times, but it's a healing process. Hold on too Jesus my friend He will get you there.
Go canner go!! This really was a great learning video!
🥰 love you!
I have one and just got my second one. Yay. Ready for January
woohoo!!!! bring it onnnnn! congratulations!!!!!
Yes, I would like to see the 915 test run. Pressure canning is totally new to me and I need to overcome my fear of using one.
I love my Presto Canner. It's the one I use. Works great
she rocked so quietly! hahaha my all american is so LOUD! hahaha
I am so excited! I just watched this because my hubs got me a Presto for Christmas. But on your suggestion I checked Facebook and found a gently used All American 910!!!!!! Squeeeeeeeee!!!!
i am dying inside!!!!😱👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 i am SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!!!!!!😆👏🏻👍🏻❤️💋
Yes, please do a test run. Can't wait for Jar It Up January!!!!!!
God bless. 🥰
What a gift!!
Thank you for showing this! (I just finished a test run of a new Presto 16 today...forgot to add vinegar to water....maybe that is why it really discolored the bottom of the canner? Or it didn't like my well water!)
Watching and praying for you and your family.
Hi so happy to see you. Can't wait for jar it up January. Thank you!
hey Brenda!😁❤️
What was the sweet spot? Did you turn heat down at once or gradually?
I have two of these, they work well. I run both at the same time! I just bought another one from the 1970's at a thrift store for $10. Need to put it to the test. I will be canning soon. Happy New year!
What a score!!
We just got one of these! Can't wait to use it!
Great video Heather! It's good to have more than one canner. Happy New Year!
I am so happy! bring on the canning projects now!🤣 Happy New Year, beautiful Mama. ❤️💋
@@TheKneadyHomesteader I'll be watching for your videos!
Great job. Very informative. Hoping to see you back very soon, healthy, strong and full of energy, both in spirit and faith. G-D Bless.
Oh my goodness, that's what I have but I have the gauge. I can't wait for Jar it up January ! 3 quarts is spot on
Yes MS Heather, would love to see the test run of the 915. I bought the 9:15 in October. I've used it some since I got it. Got a good Buy in ham an pork butt so will try to do that toward the middle or end of January stop. Take care. God bless you and yours. Congrats on the new Canna
Happy New Year, Mama!🥰💋
Patricia Carson , I have canned for several years but had not canned pork . My first batch was pork loin and it was so tough ! I then heard that was the cut of meat and not to can pork loin but can pork butt and it would be tender . My question is have you ever canned pork or pork butt and what do you think ? Thank's and have a blessed New Year , Linda (I love m All American 921 and now looking for another or maybe 915)
Whoot Whoot Matt! Great guy. I got a vacuum. So excited! For 915
he is so wonderful to me 🥰 two canners will be a game changer!
Thank You for doing this test run....I found one just like this....can't wait to try it out!
Good luck!
Heather can the 16 quart Presto Pressure Cooker Canner be double stacked with half pint jars and a divider. I am a single person and cannot eat pints or quarts.
Who would you recommend to find out this information?
Watching pressure canner videos is like watching water boil, no pun intended. Lol I bought this same one brand new in the box for $25 Bucks
Ok Eddie, that made me laugh!!!!! and WOW, Whata deal!!!!! Happy Canning and Merry Christmas!!!!
I do have a question ,the little pop up lock ,does it also indicate that air is out and the pot is full of all steam ,and i should wait till it pops up before putting the weight jiggle thingy on right?
Love my presto works great haven't had any problems
More information we get the easier it gets to learn to can! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing, how long did you wait until you opened the lid?
My old international starting getting pits in it and I got me a presto with a weight like yours and have a new all American canner coming 👍🙏❄️❤️
so happy to have you here, Charlie!😆👏🏻❤️
Thank you for this video. I’m just learning how to use my new canner. You video was such a help, thank you🙂
You are a hoot! I love canning too. I have not canned since my husband passed five years ago, but I refuse to get rid of my Presto canner.
I’m so sorry for your loss! Sometimes doing those things again are therapeutic. 💗💗
Did you start venting time when the little silver tab popped up?
You are so welcome!
NO! I will head on over and check it out!😁👏🏻💋
This video was very helpful! Thank you for making it!
Super great video... exciting just to watch this... beautiful canner... also nice stove
That has a water mark line inside as well as stating 3qts. I always add 1 additional pint as it almost ran dry on me once. Walmart ran the same one on sell in October for 39dollars. I grabbed one as that is cheaper than a Dutch oven. So now I have two canners. Yeahhhh
Good video...thanks for sharing. All parts can be purchased if necessary. Waiting patiently for January vids. Happy New Year everyone and blessings always.
whata deal! 😍👏🏻
New to the channel :) Just got some used canners this summer, this was so helpful! Thanks for Sharing!
New to pressure canning, I just did a test run with you! Thank you! I needed a visual..lol.
