Zero, Bodies, Where Boys Fear To Tread, X.Y.U., Everlasting Gaze, Heavy Metal Machine…so many hard progressive rock songs. They are so diverse. So underrated.
The Smashing Pumpkins hit their peak with this album (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness). It *IS* their magnum opus. You owe it to yourself to hear this album in it's entirety. It is often called the greatest double album of all time. Some argue it's Pink Floyd's The Wall, but it's tough to say. Two different styles, two different eras. But the fact that those are the two that are held up at such a great height should tell you something about what an album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is.
The placement of this just after "Tonight, Tonight" and "Tales of a Scorched Earth" after "1979" is absolutely brilliant. MCIS a tasting menu full of twists and turns, always pleasing to the ears. Or mine at least.
Billy initially wanted this to be the album’s lead single back in ‘95, but people around him convinced him to go with “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” instead.
I think Bullet was a good choice. It's very representative of the Pumpkins' work, very dynamic, hardcore, and playful. Jellybelly is awesome but it's a lot more straightforward.
To be fair the people around him were right. I love Jellybelly but Bullet With Butterfly Wings is definitely more radio-friendly and has more of a traditional rock “hook”.
Jellybelly is too extreme to be a single. sounding too metal for mainstream ears. Bullet has a catchy chorus and some great rock riffs. it was perfect for the launch of Mellon Collie.
Oh, you just wait until you or someone requests you to hear "The Everlasting Gaze". I'm just glad there's an upper tier member throwing you these requests for SP. Thank you!
This song was not a single. This album is a journey. You have to listen to the entire album to understand the vision. This is the album that shaped my entire adolescence. The Pumpkins are one of the most underrated bands around. They never got the credit they deserved.
Until I started doing reactions to them, I honestly never listened to them at all. One of the great benefits of doing this channel is it's forcing me to listen to bands I've never given a chance (i.e. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) as well as discovering bands I've never even heard of before (LOVEBITES, Band-Maid, Demon Hunter, Muse).
This song follows a piano/orchestra intro and a pretty mellow ballad song, so when you listen to it in context to the album, that intro smacks you in the face 😂 That album is my personal favorite album by the Smashing Pumpkins. It’s a total fucking roller coaster.
This one is from their third album "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" (1995), the follower of the one you've been reacting, "Siamese Dream" (1993). I think you're gonna dig this album. It's more your cup of tea. It's not as "alternative" as the previous. The song "Jellybelly" was not released as a single, so it was not a "hit" by itself. But all the SP fans love it. The album has 28 tracks. It would be difficult to release 28 singles, because all the songs are great 😄 Nice review!
I love Jellybelly, XYU, Bodies, Ode to no one, I mean being a hard-core pumpkin fan i feel bias about my fave band of all time! The hits they release were just okay than the real hits! Mayonaise is the Pumpkins' greatest of all time! I mean fans would agree with me there?!
If I'm not mistaken, Billy said once something like "everyone hates Jellybelly". Well, not me, and apparently not Dave either. The problem (?) for some people is that Mellon Collie is so monumental and diverse that you can enjoy it just fine after excluding the hardest, heaviest tracks, such as this one, X.Y.U., An Ode to No One (F.Y.) or Tales of a Scorched Earth. Also, Jellybelly is next to Tonight, Tonight on the 1st CD, and the change of tone and sound is BRUTAL.. I can understand that, for some people who loves Tonight, Tonight, Jellybelly may feel a little like a punch in the face. But what a great punch!
@@LudvikM of the 28 episodes we have done on the pumpkins he has only not liked Jellybelly and was lukewarm on Snail and SIva and where the boys fear to tread.. Was surprised how much he enjoyed the pisces songs in particular.
You've been reacting mostly to tracks from Siamese Dream, so yeah Mellon Collie era Smashing Pumpkins is different. More aggressive and adventurous (tonight, tonight is a fine example). Lots of diversity off that album which I think is more alternative and less shoegazy/fuzzy.
one of my favorite of their heavier songs ever.that ending with all those crazy effects is just out of control. great review, glad you liked this song of there. Also, really happy that they're playing Jelly belly on their current tour. Kiki Wong is a fantastic guitarist. she is a great addition to the band. she can freaking play with the best of guitarists any day. friends of mine saw them in the UK a couple weeks back in June. said they sound better than ever live.
I’m surprised I missed this 1! Jellybelly wasn’t a radio hit, but it was a favorite amongst fans and drummers. The songwriting & the drum intro/outro were my favorites. The bridge too, how it builds up chromatically, does something similar to the verses, then switches things up and eventually goes to the chorus and outro.
It’s hard to put a pin in smashing pumpkins. It’s kind of like they’re too pop to be shoegazer. Too gazer to be metal. Too metal to be grunge. Too grunge to be pop. Then too Tonight, Tonight… Then too Billy’s vocals. It’s a niche.
great comment. i view them as an aggressive shoegaze band, courtesy of the Black Sabbath influence. but with nearly zero punk influence, which distinguished them from the grunge acts of the time.
i always saw the pumpkins on a tiny island by themselves. billys vocals make them sound like nobody else. for better or for worse they are one of the only huge bands with THAT unique of a vocal.
Mellon Collie was the SP album I grew up with so I was accustomed to the raw sound of this album before I got into their other stuff and it’s the album that got me into drumming
This was a double album if I remember correctly. And it's all over the place genre-wise. A lot decent songs in it, and very few duds for that amount of creative output. It's probably the record company had a hard time promoting most of it. So they had to pick the ones they felt were going to be a hit. My guess is they had to pick the ones that showed the band's musical range. One of the singles (1979) sounded the cure'ish, the other had an orchestra backing, and about two were hard hitting in the same vein as this one you're reacting to. Btw, my nephews like this band far more than I do. And I think it's interesting considering how devoid of guitars modern music is. My youngest nephew picked up the guitar because of this band. The funny thing is they have no conception how popular they were. And they come to me wide eye asking me if I knew of them. As if a gen-xr had a choice not to. They were way overplayed on alt-radio and mtv.
I believe there was an intention for this to be the lead off single for a long time during the recording of the album but eventually got sidelined for Bullet With Butterfly Wings as the lead single then it just never happened
Very good choice and the review also. I'm happy that David like one smashing pumpkins song! Si tu aimes les musiques agressives, i recommand you X.Y.U, an ode to no one, bodies, Pissant, Hello Kitty Kat, Siva, i am one, the everlasting gaze, silverfuck...
Thanks DH great review. Believe it or not, Smashing Pumpkins def has some hard hitting bangers. I think you reviewed a few (Quiet, Geek USA) but maybe forgot. I’ll be requesting more of them - probably Bodies and Through the Eyes of Ruby next. That said, JellyBelly wasn’t a single but definitely among the pantheon of beloved SP songs with the die hards (Mayonnaise, Geek USA, Ode to no One, Siva, being some of the others). Realistically, 1995-96 this wouldn’t be a hit single. It’s catchy but too heavy for the mainstream - especially coming off a double album with a plethora of very catchy tracks that everyone knows like 1979, Tonight Tonight, Muzzle, and Bullet with Butterfly Wings
