@infoslinger Definitely a drummer's drummer, and my biggest influence for sure . Others no order are danny Carey and Mitch Mitchell, and Elvin Jones, and John Bonham.
Jimmy deserves the title "the JC of drumming"! (get it? har) I am not even a drummer but whenever I am listening to the Pumpkins I am tapping out those beats on my steering wheel(or doing "air drums" at key moments in the songs while not operating heavy machinery). He really really drives and propels the music so perfectly, and with such skill and intricacy, but it never feels like he's showing off. He's not there like "look at this fancy drumming"(even though it is), he's there like "feel this", and you do.
Jimmy is an often underappreciated drummer even though Billy consistently refers to JC as "The most talented member of the band" and I am so very thankful he cleaned his life up and didn't follow in the steps of his fellow passed alumni
Aside from being an amazing drummer, Jimmy is also incredibly humble. He's one of the warmest and most inviting celebrities I've had the pleasure of meeting. He's truly a gem.
Siamese Dream was lightning in a bottle for me. That album was amazing. This video really captured a time and place for me. Great, inventive and artistic pop/alt/rock music. Perfect vehicle for someone like Jimmy to express himself. Thanks for watching everyone!
Truth. I recognized way back in 1992, in the midst of all the Seattle bands, that SP was on a different level. As a drummer, Jimmy's playing instantly pulled me in. I'd spend hours(before UA-cam of course), trying to figure out all the subtleties of his playing that filled the empty spaces. He's just so fluid. Still my favorite drummer.
Whoever suggested this one… genius. Literally one of my very favorite drum parts all time. Jimmy dominates this track from mid point on. Saw them in 2017 and I knew this was in setlist and was glued. The fascinating part is that he doesn’t appear to be hitting that hard even when he is. He is deadly efficient with his drumming. Top 5 rock drummer for me all time. And it could never be Smashing Pumpkins without Jimmy. Cheers!!
Awesome video, how the hell can it ever become normal to look out from a stage and see that many people, not a camera phone in sight either! beautiful times
Lalapalooza 94 in Minneapolis they were the closers. It was perfect. The sun setting after a HOT day and them playing the rocking and mellow songs from Siamese Dream was very fitting.
Jimmy doesnt care about left and right hand....i love it... he is not afraid to end a fill with his right and crash into the next bar with his left....I love it...I always do this by accident because im left handed but play a righty kit.....Jimmy has always been amazing
Well, when I was 20 attending that festival, I didn't get all that :-) Crowd was 55k or so, but back then it was still mostly a one (big) stage festival, so they were probably mostly there.
The playing here of course is flawless. But Jimmy Chamberlin has more impressive songs that showcase his abilities. Two that immediately come to mind are Tonight, Tonight and Jellybelly. The former isn’t too difficult to play but showcases unique textures and interesting rhythms that most drummers wouldn’t think of. And the latter has some wild fills... the intro and bridge are pretty epic. Jimmy is one of my favorite drummers of all time. He always serves the song but isn’t afraid to get creative and let loose. Look up some of his solos on UA-cam.
One of the all time greats and one of my all time favs/inspirations...I was just discussing w a buddy how JC's left foot hi hat click is like the lead vocal of his kit on albums....especially Zeitgeist album.
I've always thought he had really perfect technique. He always sits up perfectly straight, relaxed arms, playing from the wrists. He never looks like he's exerting himself too much, or straining/hurting his body/back etc.
1000%!!! I saw him live with SP first time in 17 and was so impressed by same things. He stays so straight, and he has tremendous economy of movement. And, you are dead on correct transanimtion , when I saw this live I couldn’t believe that he wasn’t really exerting himself although he just dominates this track. Cheers
@@AndrewRooneyDrums dude I've been on a Pumpkins binge ever since lol. Watched all of Pinkpop now a concert from '97 in France. So glad you uploaded this, its made my day!
I think his entire reason for the tom configuration is one song called I am One. The songs intro does this thing that's basically a 16th note pattern that syncopates between the low tom and snare.

JC is a god tier drummer of grunge rock, or really 90s rock in general. Unfortunately, I feel like most people would laugh if you said he’s as good as he is, or say that they haven’t heard of him. That’s just unfortunate. I’ve seen SP play live 6 times, the first 4 (3 times in 1996 and once in 1998), he wasn’t with them, but i’m happy to have seen him live in 2000 and more recently, in 2018.
The way Jimmy could drop the volume made it so thunderous when he kicked it hard; he would have been using Sabians at this point, he switched to Zildjian later & currently plays Istanbul Agop pies. Apparently he saw the Pumpkins live when they just used a drum machine and thought they were horrible, but he liked the songs and wanted to work with Billy once they'd struck up a friendship.
@andrewrooneydrums If no one has mentioned it yet, Jimmy has this tom configuration because of their first single I Am One off their debut album Gish. In order to play the drum part he wanted on I Am One, he moved the toms and then decided he liked it there better and kept it.
Whenever I hear the Pumpkins I think of the throbbing drone of Hum… Andrew, make sure you get a listen to “You’d Prefer an Astronaut” - great, meaty drumming!
Now go listen to Chamberlains intro to Geek USA, as that I think is Jimmy's defining drum moment. Hummer is more the defining guitar track of the band. BTW notice how he keeps time on the high hat with his foot, leaving his two hands to wander around the kit and do all sorts of tight snare rolls and fills. No other drummer in rock did this as far as I remember.
It's only an intuitive guess, but maybe by having the smallest tom above the snare drum in the center, he's able to keep his toms at a lower elevation. It's easy access from his snare to the toms that way, whereas other drummers seem to have to reach more from snare to toms.
@@banyarling agreed because most of it sounds like a damn drum machine. You couldn’t over process this new album if you tried. Not sure what Billy Corgans vision is on this one.

I think the second hi-hat is a product of jimmy's drumming style....on all the pumpkins records he uses his left foot to keep time with eighth notes on like EVERY SONG....i think it must be ingrained into his technique...so if he wants to do any hi-hat articulations without the constant open closing it makes sense to do it on another hi-hat...it probably doesnt have a pedal drive setup... just permanently set to slight wash...
