This map reminds me of G. Wright’s map “The Journey of Life, or The Accurate Map of Roads, Counties, Towns &c. in the Ways to Happiness & Misery.” In fact, the general geographical layout of the land and bodies of water is incredibly similar, though the central river is replaced by a central road, and the starting point is placed in the center with the “traveler” having the option of going north or south (instead of left or right). I’d highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t seen it, it’s complex yet elegant and includes more geographic details such as mountain ranges, small streams, fields, and an interesting set of rules along the edges modeled on the look of common alphanumeric map rules!
