Indigenous Wisdom: Songlines | Great Maps Explained
Today we’ll learn about Songlines, an incredible form of Aboriginal Australian oral storytelling that combines not only history, mythology, spirituality and culture, but also navigation and spatial knowledge.
Songlines remind us that we are completely enmeshed with the world around us, which includes our history and our relationships. These stories are ancient repositories of information to help the people live on the land and learn to be together and live well as human beings. These stories go far beyond being just navigational aids, and stretch to the deepest reaches of the human spirit.

The Pyramid Earth That Wasn't
Переглядів 6729 місяців тому
Imagine if the Earth wasn't spherical, or flat, or ellipsoid. What if the Earth was a pyramid a tetrahedron, to be exact? William Lowthian Green, a 19th century amateur geologist, first proposed this theory in 1875 and it stuck around for a very long time, well into the 20th century. Today it's regarded as an obsolete scientific theory we stick to continental drift and tectonic plates but the t...
The Good, Bad, and Ugly of the London Tube Map | Great Maps Explained
Переглядів 8089 місяців тому
The London Underground Tube map is one of the most recognizable and oft-used maps in the modern world. Its history is a fascinating study in the way that modern technology has required a complete rethinking of the world around us and how we think of it; cities are now places studded with 'portals' rather than sets of streets and buildings. Yet the Tube map is also stretching the bounds of reaso...

This video is way too uncritical in its quotation of so called experts who often/mostly seem to rely on some crude mixture of esotericism (called spirituality by less intelligent people) and weird political propaganda ("gender relations"). With all due respect but just say from the beginning that you were on some personal mission here rather than "educating" people.

I first read the LOTR around 1975, and the edition I read had the two-color folded maps inside the front cover. They were tremendously helpful in understanding the story. I see now why Tolkien needed them to keep his own mind straight while writing. BTW, I'm a great fan of illustrations of all sorts in books, and our ancestors were much better about providing them than modern book makers.

This still works. I had two issues that brought me here. 1: Not loading the markercluster CSS- the cluster would show the number of markers but it was gray and hardly visible, and no colored circle would show. Loading the CSS from the stylesheet link as shown here solved this immediately. 2: Creating and loading each marker into the map in a loop with .addTo(map), and then loading the markers again into the markerClusterGroup. This ended up showing the cluster circle AND a clump of of the same markers in the cluster next to the cluster circle. Quite ugly. This was my simple mistake but be sure to remove the addTo() function from the end of markers you created in the simpler way before using markercluster.

I sit here almost wanting to cry watching WoW videos remembering the child-like wonder I felt when I first played this game. My buddies and I were obsessed with Warcraft 2 ToD and BtDP. We were kids when they came out and we would make custom maps and have each other play them huddled around my computer. Many a night with my buddies over was spent on that franchise. We even wrote fan fiction stories about these characters and lands. Then WoW came along. I had heard about it and desperately wanted to play it. I was 19 in 2004 and I could NOT believe it. I had always heard of Everquest and Ultima Online but never once tried an MMO. It was completely new to me and it was my FAVORITE franchise. I'll never forget choosing Alliance, the camera panning through Elwynn Forest, and seeing unique looking characters running around and doing various tasks. I was asking my buddy "Are those people? Are those other players!?". Then the iconic Northshire Abbey is the starting point! No way! It just went on from there. I'll never forget how amazing this game was for me. Alas, it got much more complicated and became a different game to a point. I think I may have just grown out of it, save for a few relapses over the years. The last time I played was probably 2014 or 2015 Warlords of Draenor.

Loved Vanilla. It was all the "improvements" that eventually got me to quit. Disliked everything being spoon fed to me and how the sped up leveling while taking out actually playing the game. Rush to end game and get on the hamster wheel. No thanks. Came back for Classic's re-release and would love to see that classic with new content, but doubt it will ever happen.

This is the WOW that made me wow back in 2005! I have even downloaded on Spotify one of my favorite songs from the game, "The song of Elune" from Ashenvale... I remember going as a low level Night Elf warrior through those lovely forests one day, and the song just popped! And for a while I just sat there and listened to the music and admired the ambiance... That was brilliant! To those working hard to create such moments, a big thank!

Yes, in the polygon, but the outline is super small and not great. Usually I prefer making a line that's the same coordinates as the polygon, then you can customize width and everything.

i always loved the softer style of the older maps.. its not only that we have icons and clutter now but the newer maps look a lot more crisp and digital instead of hand drawn and it just doesnt give that same fantasy feeling for me... with the ui getting more clean and boring too we are losing that charm and its just sad for me.

I’ve mentioned this on a couple other comments but something I really hated was the obsession that Warlords introduced with world verticality. It made a horizon that was so overbearingly close that there was pretty much zero organic exploration. This got much, much worse in Legion and BfA, culminating in the agony that was Dazar’alor and the utterly shameful state of the Kul’tiras map. Honestly that map is a fucking embarrassment - Drustvar looks like it’s half unexplored because the neighbouring zones appear as half the screen when zoomed in. Because of how vertical things were and how cramped the questing areas became the maps really needed to get more cluttered, since otherwise you’d be sitting at the top of a mountain without realising you were meant to enter a cave at the very bottom.
