Colaiuta is better off with return to forever or john McLaughlin. He uses too many inhuman polyrhythms that made frank sound too sloppy and an irritating off beat. And his style ws too jazzy for a rock fiend like Frank, when he gets down and dirty.

First it is not really improvised but played as demanded on this one, then previous comment on interaction between Frank and Vinnie is just crazy considering all other improvisations from that era between them (just listen to « Return of the son of SUAPYG» as an example). Hi, it’s me again! The centtttttalised scrutiniser. Nice for you to reply from two years ago yesterday!
Anyway - regarding alarming prison experiences: whilst certainly a metaphor for the music industry, there may an element of reportage. In the sixties Zappa did some prison time for his part in making illegal pornography - he did the soundtrack, not shoot or appear in the film but I expect being a long haired freak on a porn charge didn’t go well in the showers.

Joe's Garage was originally released as a single album and then the double album followed a few months later. I LOVED the first two sides of Joe's Garage but didn't care for the double album much, but it just needed a few more listens to appreciate. Just a lot to take in. Even if you don't like his humor there is a lot of great music.

Keep It Greasy - I held a chair on my local planning board for 3 years and the gent sitting next to me was also a Zappa fan - as you might imagine, we burned and traded many CDs of live sows, etc. Eventually I gave up my seat, but he continued to run for his chair. Now, every election day I see him glad-handing before the election, and every time he vocalizes the caveat "keep it greasy!" Referring, of course, to voting in the U.S.
(Also, your comment wrt Zappa's label, he had his own studio. AND, Rush's 2112 (pronounced twenty-one twelve) is also a BIG F/U to *their* record company, and got them their freedom to produce whatever they wanted from hence forward!)

I don't listen to Joe's Garage much, not my cup of tea, but something to keep in mind is that Frank was always about entertaining himself. If others liked what he produced, he saw that as a bonus. He also didn't expect even his fans to like everything he put out or that of what he called his "alternate entertainment."

  • @johnroberts5637

I think some time back in the 90's or early 2000's somebody did this as a "Rock Opera" in a full blown stage production. It's a work that needs to be taken as a whole, as there is a definite story being told, and yes, there is an autobiographical aspect to it. Frank did not like the "business" part of the music business, and when you make it to Packard Goose you will find out exactly how he felt about the so called music "press."

He started with MGM Records in '66. When he had the Bizarre Records label it was distributed by Warner Bros. If I remember correctly, at different times he ended up suing both. interesting story he told- he alleged that John Lennon ripped of a song of his that they'd played in a jam together in NYC- Lennon and Yoko put out the track on their live album - "Sometime in New York City" . JamRag + I think they called it. Zappa says it's his tune "King Kong". Zappa never sued but it seemed to make him even more bitter about the Beatles- who he was never a fsn of anyway. But Lennon and Yoko were Zappa fans. Btw, so is Jon Anderson.

From now on you will hear lots of xenochrony work. Solos in both Keep It Greasy and Outside Now were taken from live shows, and were originally soloed over completely different tracks (one of them was Inca Roads as far as I remember). Now, I'm not sure if Frank simply pasted these over the backing track, or was the backing track actually recorded over the sole guitar track. My bet is that Keep it Greasy is done the first way, while Outside Now the latter.
Anyway, theye are soooo enjoyable. And more are there to come in Act III.

This led to his healthy lifetime distrust of authorities, especially those that abuse their power.....my sentiments exactly. His endless social commentary in his lyric are to poke at the foibles of modern society.
This part of Joe's garage is a quickly thrown together jumble of stuff mainly to fulfill the WB contract, big FU,...and walk.

Like a good Capricorn, Frank hopped on up to get the highest view, then sang about what he witnessed on the way up. In some ways, Frank was a welcome dose of Bathos after the serious and profound music, mostly in your country, by progressive masters. The music is jocularly progressive, but the lyrics are, as with the guitar notes, there to irritate an executive kind of guy, somewhere along the way. Some bands diverged from the progressive mentality by being as bad as possible on every level. Maximum regression. Some of that was welcome and cool. Frank always evolved musically. Cute ass.

Your closing summation is fine and I don't think FZ would have minded the comparison with 'Grease' even - this is a cheesy high school musical (some high school kids did it - available on U-Toob somewhere - as such with special guest Ike Willis). There is an important miss here, though.
FZ's beef was the hypocrisy around - 'why is it ok for the Village People or, the Broadway musical gang to sing these about these things, but when I do it the controversy gets before the music?' (to roughly paraphrase). When this first came out FZ's reputation was more as an outrageous musician/smut-merchant/comedian than the 'all around musical genius and good (if sometimes annoying/crude) guy' we know today. And so, the cautionary tale behind the mask of Joe was a little more caustic and on the button, way back when. You can miss that today.
Anyhow - good job. Look forward to the next one!

19/16 cuz why not? It's only three 16th notes more than 4/4. You're right about the music biz allegory. Frank didn't have a great time with record execs, especially Warner Bros. It's also about censorship which Frank went on to fight against with the Mothers of Prevention aka Tipper Gore. The lyrics are really pretty dumb and puerile for the most part. It's okay not to like them. I could do without most of them myself and I'm about as politically incorrect as you can get.

How many airports do you think he’s seen, (The white section is for unloading) and if you think it’s changed your a very scary guy, its worse, i bet you go to church, lol the Mudshark thing actually happened with Vanilla Fudge ,Zeppelin and the Mothers, look it up, that one will grow hair on your head, Peaches as in Peaches En Regalia is an actual person crossing the road in a great dress , and most of his music is about record company exploitation and we know what executives say to little girls in record or film , don’t we Jim

    • @fallingdunes
      @fallingdunes 2 місяці тому

I agree it's an uncomfortable listen first time around, you get the music and it's addictive but this really was a warning to those who choose a career in music. The time this came out big bands such as Ac/Dc, Ozzy, Ted Nugent, Aeorosmith, Priest, Kiss, Styx, the list goes on and on were all listening to this on their tour buses, this was their lives coming into industrial towns with the girls, the managers and record execs that were exploiting them. Frank is telling/showing you a glimps into the music world. He doesn't sugarcoat, he has no embarrassment, and when you come back to this album, you won't too. Some people think it's juvanile in lyrics, but ask any touring musician, this really was a masterpiece in musicainship and the art of telling it like it is. Zappa was a genius.
