What this album really is about is how important free speech is and how dangerous censorship is. Frank fought this all the way to congress with other artists Dee Snyder and John Denver, and essentially won. When you think about how Frank wanted to make that point and channeled his art to do so, and did so with such amazing writing, composition, music, and production, you start to understand the genius of this man. Jim I'm enjoying your journey through Joe's Garage. I love your analogy between one of Frank's most famous quotes and your experience listening to this. Can't wait until you wrap it up and I hope you continue your Zappa journey moving forward.

Frank was the rare composer who could improvise a coherent and structured 8 minute solo around complex themes and keep it exciting throughout.
This was a very interesting period in his music, he loved texturing multiple vocal themes on top of each other, using voices the way he previously integrated syncopated music.

Im amazed you can wait so long for the next Zappa reaction. He made over 60 albums, and another over 60 have been released since his much too early death.
They aren't all Joe's Garage, in fact none of them are, cos as you're finding out genres didnt limit him, but there's much much more awesome music to hear.
All out of his head, hus music - he was a composer first, a truly great one. Who played guitar and i would say he was up there with the best. And a damn good lyricist with no filter. And a singer. He produced the albums brilliantly. And a conductor, you'll see him conducting his shows with all musicians taking cues from him. His bands could play concerts without breaks. He was a social commentator, a satirist. One of a kind, up there on his own really....

And you are right Jim ....there are loops in his music that he glides or layers over sometimes. It's something I got obsessed with too....he had a knack of making music out of all sorts of things which I find inspiring. Frank's production skills for the time were fantastic and radical too. The Packard Goose was a luxury model of a car from a failed car company Packard. While the Central Scrutinizer says it’s an imaginary song I think it’s safe to say the song depicts Zappa’s own point of view about journalism, journalists and music. The guitar solo is one of my favorites. And something that very few mention are the cracks about the guitar tone and Elegant Gypsy at the end. These are directed at Al Dimeola whose album Elegant Gypsy was pretty popular at the time this was released.

All the solos on this side were from live tapes of just solos w/o backing.
He then edited the solos to keep all the good bits and xenochonized them over studio recorded backing tracks.
The only studio recorded solo on Joe's Garage is Watermelon In Easter Hay (which is short for 'playing a guitar solo with this band is like growing a watermelon in easter hay").
The solo in Packard Goose is composed of two different ones, if you listen carefully you can hear a slight change in tone.

What I liked about CP3 is that before he died Frank brought 3 groups to his home to jam. The Chieftains. ('60s Celtic group). Huun Huur Tu (sp?) a Mongolian Throat singing group and the great Johnny Guitar Watson. When the Hun's went across Asia back in the early 1200's they advance to a place in Europe called, Hun gry. They would assimilate with the people they conquered. They would have heard a bagpipe and throat singing is a lot like the bagpipes. The drone of the bass notes while playing the higher notes at the same time. So Celtic music had an influence on Mongolian and Asian music.
I did a research on this and my paper ended up getting me an Honorary Doctorate from Cornell in Musical History. Thanks Frank.

Its interesting you mentioned a guitar solo taken out of context that works. I've seen Frank over 50X in my lifetime and I've heard live versions of this so IMO, that's not the case here. Not totally sure if David Byrne of the Talking Heads was a Frank Zappa fan or not. However part of the reason that you may hear that influence is because of guitarist/vocalist Adrian Belew. He was in Zappa's band from 77-78 during the time that Frank was writing and arranging much of the music. After Belew left he worked with David Byrne(79-82) and King Crimson(81-2013). Anyway Belew isn't on Joe's Garage. The rhythm guitar on the studio album is by Warren Cuccurullo who later formed Missing Persons with other former Zappa musicians who are all on Joes Garage(Cuccurrullo, Terry & Dale Bozzio, Patrick O'Hearn) then joined Duran Duran in 1986.
