    • @gioblonk
      @gioblonk Рік тому +1

      This is the best arguement I've seen for it thus far and the logic does make sense. However it's never good to have dead cap space like that especially when everyone else in the league is able to spend in full to the cap around you. I like the glass half full outlook on it though, I just worry about the future, 7 years later from now, in a growing market that will have other teams able to offer stars more then the Canucks may be able to. If they can lock up Elias for 8 years to get beyond this Buyout, then I will feel better about it. But man... 7 years is a long time to have cap restrictions due to buyouts.

    One of the big selling points for bringing OEL to Vancouver was getting him a fresh start away from the head coach in Arizona. Then the Canucks management brought in the head coach he was escaping. I thought we might get a couple half-decent years from OEL before he became the gift that kept on giving for angry Canucks Twitter. But OEL quickly became untradable because of his contract. So we took on another team's salary dump, but yet WE LOSE a 1st round pick (LOLWUT?). And then, now in 2023, we are thinking of doing a salary dump ourselves to the Blackhawks, and for that we will have to LOSE another 1st round pick for nothing. As ugly as this buyout is, I think this was probably the best move for the team. They had to do something, and it was becoming clear that trying to negotiate a trade for one (or more) of the “usual suspects“ would involve giving up more assets and/or retaining salary, which would be ugly as well. Now it’s just a matter of how they manage the wriggle room that this move gives them. Fingers crossed.

    This makes a ton of sense. We get out of the 23/24 cap crunch, and when the penalty starts to actually kick in 24/25, you have Myers, Pearson and Beauvilier off the books. The key will be to use this cap space to retain on Beauvilier and get an asset in return. Or even retain on Myers and maybe even get an asset. Space will be eaten up in 24/25 with Peterson and Hronek getting new deals.
    Just for the love of god, leave yourself some cap room so we can be a landing spot for someone in trouble. Also, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not go and trade for Seth Jones.

    It probably depends on if you think the Canucks would make the playoffs next season. If not, then the play might have been to just keep Ekman-Larsson for one more season, open up cap space with other deals, get another lottery pick and THEN buy him out with 6 years of penalties instead of 8 - but they were going to have to buy him out sooner or later.

The short sightedness of that deal was stunning. Everyone, and I mean everyone other than Frankie and Benning could see this coming. 1 more year, 1 more, that's all it was going to be. But no, Frankie wanted that 1 round of playoff revenue.

    The Cam Neely (+ Glen Wesley) trade was definitely worse than this. The only reason the OEL trade comes close is because of the cap. But the cap exists because you have teams in markets that either shouldn’t be there or shouldn’t exist at all. They should raise the cap floor if anything and if you can’t afford to ice a competitive team, you’re SOL and JWF.

    The Canucks have screwed themselves. This team cannot win or compete for a cup as currently comprised. They need to trade Petterson while they still have leverage to get an outstanding return. That Miller contract is an albatross. They will get 3 -4 good years from him before it goes bad. Realistically, the Canucks won’t be any good for at least 3years and to top it all off, Petterson can walk in two years. Same as Boeser. They need to rebuild and this would be a great draft to start that.

    I have a couple of questions regarding contract but outs.
    1. Do teams buyout the entire amount of the contract or is it reduced by the escrow amount each season? For example, if a 30 year old player is owed $27 million over 3 years do they pay the player $18 million (2/3 of contract) or do they pay $18 million less escrow or the full $18 million. If escrow is at 10% each year that would be an additional $1.8 million in cap savings over 6 years.
    2. Does the player get paid a full lump sum as soon as the buyout is executed, is it paid out annually per the buyout schedule, or does the player get regular paychecks like active players under contract (weekly I believe).

    It's not a great move, but it's the right move. You can't walk into next season with basically no cap space and no way to improve your team. At least this time around we were able to convince the Acquilinis for this buyout unlike with the Luongo contract. We didn't have enough cap space to re-sign Toffoli which we paid at least two prospects and two picks for, because we were tagged with a cap recapture penalty for the Luongo contract.

    What many seem to forget is that when you buyout a player you still need to fill that spot on the roster. Last I checked Vancouver wasn't rich in Defensemen so essentially you'll have to use your "savings" on a replacement. Yes the cap is going up but with that so will be player contracts. In a few years do you think you'll get a better defensemen than OEL for the 4 million you saved. Doubtful

We have 2 years where he cost us 4 million the rest is 2 million which is very manageable. Even 4 million is manageable we have a couple years to prepare for that. This creates the cap space to fine some of our needs to for the long term as well and cheaper options and where not up against the wall

    I think he's headed to Europe. Benning traded for him on the premise of acquiring a number one defenseman. Presuming Eckman Larson would be one in Vancouver was sound thinking...in 2016. The trade happened in 2021. By that point, Eris-Zona had succeeded in shattering him into a million pieces at the altar of that hellmouth Bettman uses to opt out of the aging process...
    Anyway, back on topic, Eckman Larson was burnt toast by the time John Chayka signed that contract...in 2018. Bill Armstrong was probably laughing all the way to the bank when the Canucks offered a first round pick and cap relief in 2022 in exchange for those shattered remains. And he played like it, especially in his own zone. I don't think he's an NHL defenseman anymore, but I think he can play well enough to keep up with the talent level in Europe.
