The Canucks never should have traded for Hronek until they moved a contract out. Even if it meant missing out on that trade because Detroit would have moved him to another team.
Yup. Everyone said they should've waited till after the season (or not make the trade at all), but Nucks management probably thought they could move Miller to the Penguins (but that fell through) so they made the Hronek trade. Don't count your chickens till they're hatch, but Nucks management was too stupid to follow this logic. They said themselves that they needed to get rid of contracts before adding on more and then they made that Hronek trade. That combined with not being able to move even Miller and the lessers like Boeser, Garland, etc... cause a situation for the Nucks that they either had to give sweeteners to other teams to get rid of contracts or buyout OEL. Neither were good options, but Nucks went with the latter. Not sure who's actually running this team (Nucks management or Aquaman), but I guess they love constant mediocrity.
the last time they were in good shape cap wise was when mike gillis was gm. the oem trade assured that jim benning will never run another franchise in his life.
It feels like Lando from the Robot Chicken Star Wars "This deal's getting worse all the time!" where it keeps getting back to bite your back whenever you try to say this every single time
This trade is not just the worst trade in Canucks history, but in NHL history. When other teams does salary dump, they have to LOSS a 1st round pick. Only when you trade with Vancouver, you can do a salary dump and GAIN a 1st round pick. See what I did there? Another way to look at this. When you throw out someone's garbage, you normally get paid. Only with Vancouver do you PAY the other guy to throw out their garbage. This is why Canucks ownership and mismanagement is by far the worst in the whole league. It isn't even close.
I remember reading the comments defending the trade, it has quickly become the worst trade in Vancouver Canucks history and there are trade rumors with Conor Garland.
If you break it down it's not that bad,the bad part is the contract if OEL was making 2million he'd be a Canuck still and worth It. No doubt in my mind he will go take not much money and be a really serviceable player or win cup like Kessel. Erickson for Garland is win for Canucks And 1st round picks are up to teams scouting who they pick. No garuntee Canucks would have taken Guenther. I will agree with they needed rebuild along time not re tool. And management is poorly run, prospect pool isn't good or panning out like Virtanen,Juolevi ect.
One of the worst trades in Canucks history by one of the worst GM in Canucks history! Jim Benning has screwed over the franchise by quite a few years by this blunder, FJB!
JIm Benning wasn't good, but let's not forget that Aquilini was pressuring Benning to make those bad decisions. Linden and Benning originally had a plan to do a full rebuild and Aquilini said "no, get me in the playoffs now!" That's why Trevor Linden left. Benning's biggest mistake was staying for the dumpster fire and not following Linden out the door. That's Jim Benning's worst decision as that permanently ruined his reputation in a no win scenario. I can only hope that by now Aqualini's learned his lesson and will let his management experts do their jobs free of owner interference from now on.
@@Seriously_Unserious Yes the win now mentality when they should’ve been rebuilding didn’t help. But man that OEL contract and giving up a first as well when OEL had only given Arizona a choice of two teams??? Horrible negotiating skills and that’s on Benning.🤦♂️
@@DonnyCanuck79 Again though, Benning was being pressured into those horrible moves by Aquilini interfering, and putting Benning into a no win scenario. Benning's mistake was in not seeing that and following Linden out the door.
Okay this was a terrible trade, but the Cam Neely and Glen Wesley for Barry Pederson trade was absolutely the worst. Neely had a decade-long career as a player with the bruins, had three 50 goal seasons, won the Masterson trophy, scored 50 in 45, and holds the Bruins record for most playoff goals. He took the Bruins to the finals twice and is a Hall of Famer. He did all that as one of the greatest power forwards of the era, and despite playing with hip and knee problems. He is the President of the Boston Bruins. Glen Wesley was eventually traded for THREE first rounders. Canucks got a broken down Barry Pederson and years of disappointment.
Could of waited last year of contract 3 asset what a joke I said before Benning weakness is structured the cap adding keep adding Dead weight contracts Myers to Erickson now oel
Two of those guys were free agents not trades. Myers and Louie were given those deals by the Canucks. OEL was a contract taken and he was playing like trash. This was bad.
Can't we say ty ownership as well, not only to Benning after all the season was over planes banners flying all over place fire Benning 🔥 Ownership problem too late ignoring the fans you do not give up 1 yr of bad contracts of players for more yrs of 1 declining player once I saw this trade I was furious. I'm like, wait, ur helping out more of the other team by them wanting to get rid of him? and there taking most of all his contract hardly retained much the trade didn't make any since. Vancouver always takes 1 step forward and 3 steps back there is no structure or any1 of the GM'S manages the cap properly ever over here especially with a Flat Cap and Benning knew it we all knew what was going on and Coyotes win out smarted Benning's IQ they barely retained any cap on OEL and now the Canucks pay for it and the Canucks deserves it due to this lack of Ownership that doesn't care about winning at all in the future. Just throw out draft picks for players who used to be good and to win now when they are a below average playoff team....
Cam Neely was the worst. I'm Gen Y, but I just don't get how Zoomers act like everything that happened in their lifetime is important, but everything before that was just about a bunch of old people and we don't need to concern ourselves with that. They didn't have the mass media in the 80s that they do now, so there's no way to compare the reaction back then to the OEL trade now, but as far as I'm aware, Guenther isn't a hall of famer yet, so we can pump the brakes on "worst trade in Canucks history." Bad trade? Absolutely. So was trading a pick that could have potentially been an effective player on a cost-efficient ELC for 3 years. If Zoomers want the Canucks to be a playoff team yesterday, imagine how I feel, having watched the Canucks since 1990 and those people who have been fans longer. But we know the very basic truth that you win through the draft. And trading away draft picks is more of the same Benning stuff. I don't want to see any 1st round picks moved unless it's for another first round pick, and potentially more depending on whether we're moving up or down. Obviously the flat cap made the trade worse, but the whole concept of giving up the future to be mediocre now has been going on since 2013, and resulted in one legitimate playoff appearance. The other was a fluke.
They tried for him earlier and I was squealing No F'n way. His contract was terrible, he was diminishing and he was getting super star money and he never was that good to deserve that money and only a fool would touch it. Butt Benning had a hard on for this guy for some insane reason. Over pay! Over pay for a Doughty not him. Even a Chara at that time. Guys that have been there. And yeah, he was old already. Funny Toronto was thinking of hiring him. They tried and missed the first time on Loui. I was no never. Why? Loui was not going to raise the bar. Ever. I could swear he was out to ruin the organization. Everything seems to start running smooth and something else he did makes you go Oh Man. Well so much for his legacy. Yep people will react like the folks on Corner Gas when they hear the name Wullerton.
Yeah but Lego you have a lot of bad takes😂 as a oilers fan I remember the Bouchard one you always say bold opinions and your always wrong don’t be mad you lost your mojo you never had any
You also have to remember that Vancouver had to watch Markstrom, Tanev, and Toffoli walk because they didn't have the cap space.
and decided to pay worse players over them
@@DaltonM1967Yep.
“We can’t afford 8 million for Tanev and Toffoli”
“We just spent 10 million on Schmidt and Holtby but they’ll only last a year”

Whoever decided to package this trade from canucks, you did a great job of having your name on the worst trade of the team, if not NHL history.
