I've always loved how Bond immediately sizes Q up as non-threat; merely humouring him until he mentions "007". Treating him as just a (possibly annoying) art student sharing a critique on a canvas; never more on guard than he needs to be.

Bond doesn't sit on his jacket like a distinguished gentleman while young Q's jacket is all wrinkly from sitting on it. I just love that contrast.
I think its more that one is wearing a suit jacket, the other is wearing a rain coat over the top of of his jacket. Different materials.

You can also see a white pocket square in the breast pocket of his suit jacket. A waistcoat wouldn’t even have a breast pocket. The overcoat is also clearly of a quite heavy wool fabric not suited for a suit jacket.

'My guy' (gen zederism), Ben Whishaw in this scene is absolutely wearing a winter overcoat. In this case it's a Parka by Pretty Green.
Q's description of the painting seems to allude quite well to Daniel Craig's evolution from Skyfall to and through No Time to Die (hence, also the motif of time)... also, I'm pretty sure this same painting is hung up on the wall behind M's desk in No Time to Die, quite symbolic for Bond
There's actually at the end of this film behind M - the art is very symbolic, in the gallery, it's the Termeraire, one of the battleships that fought at Trafalgar, being decommissioned. In M's office at the end, the picture is of Victory and Termeraire blasting away at Trafalgar so it goes from a weapon being discarded because it's no longer required with people who think they are a relic back to a weapon, reborn, and doing what it does best in the end with people who know what they are like.
Dude, ben is so talented, if you haven't watched Surge with him in it, its bloody brilliant, best performance of his in my opinion

The dialogue in Skyfall is consistantly brilliant
None of their statements make any sense except as references to other bond movies. 'New Q' might as well stare right into the camera and start rapping. I don't know if this is a 007 installment or parody.

@@martincurran6432 It's not only the exploding pen remark. Their conversation on Q's age is not two people discussing whether one of them is old enough to do the job. It sounds like a transcript of the boardroom discussion on how old to make Q. It's horribly stilted and inorganic.
It's a brief part of the conversation but I feel it's only you who feels this way. Everyone else seems to think it's great dialogue

This one scene better captures Q's personality and charm better than all of his scenes in Spectre and No time to Die combined. Really goes to show how important a smart script is.
The HMS Temeraire, at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, came up alongside Nelson's ship while it was fighting a boarding action (and losing), unleashed a broadside and turned the tide of the fight. It took two French ships that day. It was one of the most famous ships and actions of its day, and now if we know about it at all we know it from a painting showing its death. I don't know quite what that says about time, decay, and death but it's fun to think about.
Also, as a new fact, the picture at the end of the film was the HMS Victory and HMS Temeraire fighting side by side at Trafalgar
Once you see Q's nose moving while he talks... you can't unsee it.

The dialogue is really precise! I love that the whole thing took place in a peaceful gallery and they were sitting in front of a painting which ironic enough brings metaphorial messages during the 'Q' cameo

That conversation on their interpretation of the painting is such a nice veil for the actual conversation. Q implies that 007 is getting too old and it’s time for him to be hauled away and replaced by a someone younger just as the ship in the painting. When 007 is asked for his view, all he sees is a bloody big ship, formidable and still powerful. That’s the only thing he sees and that’s the only thing that still matters.
EDIT: For all of you putting snarky comments about how obvious this is, please don't let me my appreciation for this scene hurt your fragile egos. You don't have to prove you understood it too, I'm sure you did and, trust me, you're really smart. Now, please go away...

Craig looked like he actually enjoyed playing Bond in this one. Easily his best.
He definitely played him with more charm here than the previous two. Whole film it's an homage/love letter to the Connery era films

The painting was beautifully chosen. _(The Fighting Temeraire by Turner)_ It shows a fabulous old fighter that won *_huge_* fame at The Battle of Trafalgar, being hauled away to be broken up. In her prime she was deadly and victorious. Now look at her... too old, unwanted and unceremoniously slung out for scrap like an old canal barge. Keep looking straight at it, James, 'cos in just a couple more years.... that's you.
Mr Turner played by Timothy Spall is worth a look. That's how I knew the painting

I always assumed that the gun box was made to fool an x-ray machine, as Bond also has to get it to Shanghai somehow. Lead-lined, perhaps.
But that aside, museums in England don't really have very stringent security checks.

One line I've yet to read the love it deserves: "Less of a random killing machine, more of a personal statement." (1:50)
Not only Q's telling Bond that that gun is only _his_ and only _he_ can fire it, the line plays further with the "Or not pulled" one: that gun is not to be wasted on nameless goons or random guys, no. It's gonna be used for a killing worth of it, worth of Bond leaving a message to his enemies.
Q acknowledged Bond's career, his experience, his work, in an elegant way.

And that gun is otherwise far from exotic or rare status. So plenty more ammo for it can easily be obtained.
@@davecrupel2817 When shot, the bullets will carry the trademark pattern of the rifling in the barrel itself. It's a fingerprint unique to that gun and all guns ever made. Every victim killed from that single gun alone would carry a bullet with that rifling pattern as its signature. Of course, if enemies were intent on finding who the killer was - they'd see it was from this very pistol and none other. They wouldn't know it was Bond's pistol.... just the same pistol used in other shootings if they had access to that information in a forensic firearms and toolmarks table.

"Sike" is when someone conveys something and then reneges on it.
I'm not quite sure how Bond can both convey and renege on returning the equipment with the same smile.

I sat right there in the National Gallery spring 2019 admiring The Fighting Temeraire just because I’d seen this scene in Skyfall and wanted to see the painting in person. It didn’t disappoint.
same, I visited National Gallery for the 'bloody big ship' when I went to the UK.
This is something that I will do when visiting UK again after +20 years.
It’s now hanging in the corner of the room. No more sitting in front of it playing secret agent, I’m afraid. Perhaps the staff got annoyed at so many fans doing it…

I never watched Bond films until Daniel Craig came along. He hooked me in and attracted my attention; ever since then, I have loved every bit of his movies. I love that depth he brings to Bond's character and that part of humanity in him.
His movies literally changed the face of Bond movies. The cinematography, the action sequences, made the movies way more darker that it ever was. Loved how in the end of the interview Daniel talked about rarity of James Bond movies. You've added a part of your personality and life to the cinema history, Mr. Craig, and it is a valuable input.
Thank you Daniel Craig. Thank u for great movies like; Casino Royale, Skyfall and NOW No Time To Die; my favourite Bond movie/ any movie of all time. I'll miss you being my James Bond, the one I grew up watching and still do, reminiscing how cool you are all while still looking up to you. ❤
To whoever is the next James Bond they have got huge shoes to fit in. This gent has been the best Bond ever. His Bond has taken the films into the stratosphere. I’ve loved the series since I was a little and cried as No Time To Die ended. Oh my days what a guy.

Daniel Craig has been my personal favourite James Bond, he’s set the standard really high for the next actor whoever they might be and I hope that the film is as good as I’m hoping that it will be. If I ever get to meet the bloke I’ll be sure to buy him a drink or ten to say thanks.
Daniel Craig excels all the James Bonds and brings it to this whole new level. This man made a whole new world with his time frame and the position he was in while playing James Bond. Daniel Craig is the absolute epitome of any actor reforming, improving & developing a movie to a 110% piece of work; always going above and beyond all expectations. Loved this new young fellow as Q. And I only recently … well, a few years ago … found out that Q stands for quartermaster.. the costume designer has outfitted him based on the sixties. Hair. Sixties cardigan. Glasses. Love it. And clearly he is as skilled with the quartermaster tech as 007 is in the field. Bond recognizes his value early on.

This was a class act interaction between two competent and intelligent individuals. The only true difference between them, however, and kind of wins the argument overall is the gap in experience between them. Intelligence plays a critical role in efficiency, but ultimately it is almost always experience that determines the outcome. Intelligence will tell me everything I need to know that's written on a piece of paper, but experience is going to tell me if I can actually trust that piece of paper or not.

@@VictorTorres-vn6wj Just for clarification, and I hope this applies to you, while I am of the opinion experience tends determine the outcome of adverse situations, I hope people with said experience remember to not let that get in the way of being open to the up and coming newbies suggestions who have the intelligence to be as great as their elders when it comes to working together. I've seen plenty of older people completely run over younger people because they let their pride get in the way (happens to me sometimes with my boss) and can't stand to be wrong when they've been used to using the same methods for years, and don't want to change or adapt to the times.

the segments with Desmond Llewelyn as the first Q were always one of my favorite scenes, however this one is subtly brilliant a very worthy Q...even had a great homage to Desmond Llewelyn "bring the equipment back from the field in working order"

Bond was asways scolded for ruining expensive equipment and there was a basis in fact for this. At the time the first Bond novels were written, MI6 was in fact a clandestine organization that operated off the books with no budget because an official organization could hardly order someone killed. Being an officially non-existant organization which had no official budget they had to receive funds from other organizations who were reluctant to part with them! MI6 had to beg for money and was usually short of funds.

The reading between the lines aspect of this scene is bloody brilliant.

One of the best bond scenes
This is how you do a sequel. This scene plays on the tropes that we expect from Bond, Q and a Bond movie in general. I love that (0:25) Bond doesn't give a single SH*T about art lecture, I love that they immediately get into not just an argument but one that showcases their ideologies perfectly. Love that Bond, most commonly called an English assassin, talks about saving someone's life instead of eliminating them. Love the handshake, Q's earned his respect in Bond's eyes and Bond's earned Q's who no doubt knows Bond by reputation. Love how meta the "exploding pen" line is.
WIll the post endgame MCU take any hints? Of course not, they write their movies with the well known "focus group" writing technique

I love that they gave him the "return the equipment in one piece" line, the traditional final line of Quartermasters meeting with Bond.
"I thought I said: 'Bring it back in one piece ', not 'Bring back one piece '".
That line makes me giggle, every time I hear it.

There was a Q in Casino Royal, as I recall, the one who microchips Bond. He just didn't have any lines, or at least not an introduction.
I binge rewatched all craig's bond movie. But something that I notice about their relationship in this francise. I know there's so many people ship them, and called their ship's name 00Q which is funny and cute.
But somehow I think Q kinda remind him (bond) to vesper, same brunnete hair, same green eyes, same soft spoken voice, same smirk, and one of a few people can outsmart him. Whenever they batering, bond always gave him the warm and geniune smile, and he always looks him with that warm gaze whenever he teased him. If they didn't cutted the script where bond saves Q from the kidnapper, we will see their interaction and know more about their relationships
In Time to Die Bond lives with Q for a time. That would have been an interesting tennant, landlord relationship!
