Crocodile Dundee: An 80s Classic That Doesn't Get Enough Love

  • People may not realize it now, but Crocodile Dundee is one of the most profitable films ever made. It was shot for only 8 million dollars in Australian currency and made $336 million at the global box office, which is equal to about $800 million now. It was the second highest-grossing film of 1986, after Top Gun. It led to an American fascination with Australia that was memorably lampooned on one of the best Simpsons episodes ever, and it got two sequels, one of which, Crocodile Dundee 2, was another huge blockbuster. But, more than forty years later, it seems lost to time, as it's never really talked about in the way most massive movies of the era are. In this video we dig into the backstory behind the film and holds up now.

I've watch some young reactors watch Crocodile Dundee and they all love it. Saying all they want to do is hang out with Dundee. I think the jokes are still fine. They're based on innocence. I think society hasn't aged well. No one I knew in the 80s cared if you were gay or whore a dress. Dundee grew up out side of society. From His innocent point of view a guy dressing up like a woman would not make sense. If you looked at our world as a true outsider a lot of stuff would not make sense. That is Dundee's ever a lasting charm. I when from 15 to 25 in the 80s. The perfect age for the 80s. I lived in Toronto and Dundee played for months in the theatre in 86. Crocodile Dundee was the topping on a cake for me as I fell in love with Australian movies from 1981- 86 with Gallipoli, The Road Warrior, The Man From Snowy River, The Year of Living Dangerously. I love Dundee 2 as much as the first one. The Dundee soundtrack is so iconic to me.

I don't think the world was prepared for the humour and charm of crocodile Dundee. Paul Hogan became an overnight Australian super hero without the super powers. It was a very important movie of the 80s. We are presented with a very unique type of action hero who you just can't help but to love due to his toughness and sense of humour. What a gem of a film and what a great character. An absolute 80 classic.

Some info from an Australian that will make some scenes make more sense:
The scene where the kangaroos are being shot and he calls the dead roo Skip. In the '70's in Australia there was a kids TV show called Skippy, think Lassie, but with a eastern grey kangaroo instead of a dog. It was pretty bad, but its what we had.
The subway where he walks over the crowd: When sheep are in a pen at shearing time the sheep dogs need to go up and down the pens to keep the sheep moving. They take a short cut by running along the backs of the sheep.

Aussie born in 1980 here. I'm glad you appreciate Crocodile Dundee. The first film especially is a unique gem. It definitely was a different time, people could laugh at pretty much anything and we did... I still do! I get why you'd say the "Homophobic" content etc. doesn't really add anything but, for us, it gave us laughs. You probably also don't want to get "cancelled" 😆 Honestly though, self deprecating humour was more common back then and I think it helped to keep people just a bit humble. I honestly feel bad for those who can't have a laugh at themselves from time to time.
Oh and your Aussie accent wasn't terrible... for an American. All the best! 👍😎

2:20 As an 8-year-old, I would have watched 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' in the theater, but Dundee 2 was on HBO a lot throughout '88 and '89 (so was the first one). And that was back when HBO had their ultra-rad, ultra-stylish promo that got you psyched up to the max no matter what you were watching!
2:44 That guy was in 'The Warriors' and 'Next of Kin'. You just know there had to have been some people who told him he could never be an actor because of his lazy left eye. They told Peter Falk the same thing due to his glass right eye (he lost his eye to cancer at the age of three). Gotta love it when artistes stick it to the naysayers. Sylvester Stallone did that too. His issue was paralysis on the left side of his face due to an injury he suffered at birth.
    6:01 Hub McCann would've.

I saw the third movie ( _Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles_ ) in a pre-release screening on the Paramount lot. I hated it. The script was absolutely godawful. The cast were fine, including Hogan; the one time they let him do a scene with no dialogue (the "hat spider" scene), it was hilarious and everyone in the theater laughed like it was the good old days. The rest of the movie was pretty grim.

This is a great movie and the sequel is fantastic. Great good natured comedy adventures with fantastic casts and the beautiful Aussie locations along with the contrast to the wild 80's New York setting. Paul Hogan was already a household name here because of his TV shows and he made the leap to the big screen in spectacular fashion with these films. Absolute classics! Would definitely recommend this. At our school we actually got sat down in class to watch the first one at the time and then went on a school trip to go see the second one when it came out. Good times! Excellent video guys! Cheers from Melbourne!

Love this movie so much. I was 15 when it came out and it made us all so proud that the world was finally taking notice of Australia. Hoges had already been a household name in Australia for a decade by this stage and we all loved his success. He lost a bit of his shine when he left Noelene for Linda Kozlowski, but we still love him. Having said that, he should have stopped after the second film.

This is an awesome movie, and still holds up great today. The soundtrack was also pretty great. I don't think the problem is with the movie being a product of it's time - I think society these days has an issue about taking things way to seriously / narrowly for the sake of appearing to be morally/ethically superior than all the other dingleberries on social media.

Speaking of caricatures, I have no idea if its accurate, but that scene in the subway with an otherwise street-wise public coming together for a sentimental cause, strikes me as very New York.

Another bit of useless trivia but I've been watching the TV series Miami Vice and noticed at least four actors from Crocodile Dundee and two actors from Crocodile Dundee 2 were on the show.

I think mentioning one time some things don't age well is enough. People need to stop being so fxxking sensitive.

interestingly just caught the sequel to this a few days ago-one of the disappointing ones for sure, but the original caught me by surprise last summer when i watched it for the first time. still holds up especially the ending, kinda close to the one to 'Serendipity' which I'm sure it inspired.

He named the decoy kangaroo "Skippy" after the Australian t.v show Skippy the Bush Kangaroo that ran from 1968 to 1970.

What's interesting is that in the modern eye, yes parts of these films could be considered problematic, but not even much. As explained, there's no actual nastyness behind them, just the honest naivety of the character. A mature disucssion can easily find that conclusion.
But some people claim that the fact that discussion exists is allegedy a huge problem. The same people that, these days, react with any positive representation of Indigenous Australians as 'woke'.
    So, stuff 'em.
