Oh Merle if you haven't gotten on the msg train you're missing out. You absolutely need it in your life and it's so vital to vegan dishes in restaurant cooking. It's truly a game changer and not nearly as bad as people think it is. All foods have glutamate in them. Msg is just the salt form of it so you just need to use like a 1/4 teaspoon less salt in your recipes when using msg
To answer your question about what is in liquid smoke, it's literally just regular smoke condensed in water-based liquid. I'm not kidding. They burn some wood and channel the smoke into water.

@@MerleONeal yeah. I recommend watching "How Smoke Preserves Food" by Adam Ragusea. Not vegan by any means but I mean it's very educational. He does explain briefly how liquid smoke is made.
@@incarosen6343 they do discard some of the carcinogens in the process though, making the use of liquid smoke actually safer than over-fire smoking.

I am recently diagnosed as diabetic. Type 2.
So, I have been looking for healthier recipes.
While not vegan, I am open to anything if it tastes good.
I just tried this recipe today. I was absolutely blown away with how amazing the flavor is on this. I didn't get the texture quite right on the majority of it. But, the flavor was fantastic.
So from a non-vegan who has had her mind blown...this is a recipe for anyone to try. That marinade...could be used on so many things. A salad? Yep. Burger? Yep. Chicken? Yep.
On any baked, fried or grilled veggies? Yep.
It is very versatile and gives an amazing umami flavor.
10/10 will have this in the future.

AFAIK liquid smoke is literally condensation from a smokehouse with other stuff added. I have never been keen on bacon alone but LOVE blt's so anything crispy and smoky will do cuz it's all about the tomato for me. A drizzle of Holy Smoke smoked olive oil is spendy but RECOMMENDED.
MSG is like my secret weapon, I use it when something is missing, and I don’t wanna just use salt. I LOVE IT. PLS PLS PLS do an episode on it so I can send it to all my friends who get weirded out when I use it. 😊❤️

I know it has nothing to do with this format, but for the next time you do a ranking video, instead of how close it tastes to meat, would you be able to base it on whether it just tastes good or not? I'm a meat eater myself, but I have loved the sort of scienc-y adventures you go on with your cooking, trying some of them for myself, looking for a replacement for meat isn't really my thing. Like to me it won't taste better if its always something else, but it can still be fantastic in its own right, you know?

I think a great bacon doop is the morning star bacon. It’s smells and tastes like bacon. Just don’t cook it for the time on the box or it will come out like baked bits because it breaks really easy. I put in it for 30 second and it’s great!

Have you tried it with a parsnip? I live in a smaller community (larger than most in Oklahoma but Tulsa or OKC or even a suburb) but we can get parsnips at the local grocery stores.

Liquid smoke often is just water that has been in a smoking chamber.
Some of the aromas in smoke are water solvable, some is oil solvable.
But the liquid smoke brands I’ve come across have mostly just been smoked water.

I’ve had this amazing tempeh bacon at a restaurant and trying to replicate but having a hard time. Maybe try tempeh bacon next? I know it needs to soak up a lot of the marinade and be baked or air fried (I’m getting closer with my experiments).

I’d be interested in the deep dive on MSG. When I was a teenager, I went through a three week fainting phase and my doctor thought it might be related to MSG, but nothing was ever decided upon.
Yes! It’s interesting to see how it affects different people, because while some are fine, some have adverse reactions. In my family, there are both people who are fine with it and people (like me) who get inflammation🙃

Buzzfeed has been tanking over the last 4-5 years tbh, so it's not really a surprise that they've started laying off their employees.
I have a suspicion that there was feelings about her Peacock show; companies are vindictive that way... which reminds me what happened to Grace and the team at Goodful??? I noticed there have been little activity there too.
Thank you for saying that MSG has been wrongfully villanized. Glutamate is an amino acid that naturally occurs in ANY human being. The only issue with it is the sodium being an issue the same way too much salt is. The only scientific studies that showed issues with MSG "sensitivity" was with animals fed ENORMOUS amounta of MSG with little food or water. So like.......eat it with food and drink more water.......😅
