- As Omicron sends hospitalization numbers in the U.S. soaring to record levels, President Biden is promising free masks and an additional 500 million at-home tests. Meanwhile, the high percentage of unvaccinated citizens is giving rise to another issue. Dale Weeks, 78, fully vaccinated and boostered, recently passed away - not from COVID-19, but from lack of access to intensive care in local hospitals overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases. Weeks' daughter, Julie Simanski, sits down with Michel Martin to share her frustrations.

I've been an RN for 37 years. The staffing shortage now is unbearable. Working in a hospital is near impossible both physically and mentally. People really are dying due to the corporate greed that has existed for decades.
I am so sorry. You nurses and doctors deserve so much better, and better protected.
Yes underfunding but also the current burden of avoidable admissions of high care unvaccinated Covid patients.

My mom died of heart failure on September 1. I believe when her condition began to worse in March-April 2021 that her care was delayed due to covid and by the time the doctors were paying any attention to her, it was too late.

The same thing happened to my mother in May of 2020. And due to the Covid protocols in place we were unable to be there and advocate for her. It was a cascading failure and by the time they found she was septic in July, it was basically too late. The hospital pushed her out to keep beds available.
Absolutely outrageous; I'm sorry for your loss. Good people are dying that shouldn't be and I'm tired of trying to be nice.
If you CHOOSE to be COVID-19 unvaccinated, you should not be taking up hospital resources if you become ill from it.
If you want to play Russian Roulette with your life, more power to you. But stay away from the hospitals, ERs, clinics, etc. because you don't have the right to play with someone else's life. Stay home and let good people live.
I keep myself healthy to not use precious resources since not enough healthcare in rural hospitals. 💔

I am a relatively well off woman originally from Iowa. My family has lived in Iowas since the 1850s. I moved for professional reasons 20 years ago. All of my history and familiy are there. I have always been planning on moving back to Iowas for retirement. I had been looking for a house. No longer. Given the way Iowans have responded to COVID, No, I do NOT want to live around these people anymore. I always thought of us as people who look out for each other, but something has clearly change. No more. I can't trust these people as neighbors anymore. Done!!!!! I may be a stateless woman, but I know I"m no longer an Iowan.

Apparently some systems are now refusing to pay the expenses for hospitalization of the unvaccinated.

My sister started working as an RN almost 40 years ago.
She's been a charge/head nurse; orthopedic nurse; cardiac nurse; pediatric and geriatric nurse.
She says she can't take it any more and is quitting.
Let me tell you..nurses like her are overwhelmed and admin are forcing them out because they tend to
SPEAK UP on behalf of their patients and staff, instead of focusing on maximizing profits.
ALL this is exacerbated because of the unvaccinated covid PT's.
My sister's already had covid once, and went right back to work after she recovered.
She said, "Most of the time we are NOT our work - but a nurse is not just WHAT I DO...it's WHO I AM.

This grief-stricken woman's statement that, "...people are not being nice to each other," sums things up quite well (though rather less stridently than others in her position might phrase it).

The freedom not to get vaccinated should come with the responsibility to battle COVID in the privacy of one's home.
People with compromised immune system are not able to take the vaccine. So,are they to blame if they are hospitalized after contracting COVID-19? Why haven't the government speak on ways to boost your immune system and staying g healthy. It's all about getting vaccinated no matter what. What if you have antibodies that are high enough to combat the virus? The vaccine should not be a one size fit all.
Absolutely tragic. This is heartbreaking....and so unfair. My heart goes out to her family, and all the families who are impacted by this untenable situation.

So sad. I am really saddened by her loss. Her Dad sounded like a guy anyone would want to know. Covid has made me so cynical about the US. This country does not exist for the people. The US is an economic system, a money making, focused economic system. Our healthcare system is therefore a money focused enterprise, and Covid has revealed the weakness of that system. And yet, in Baltimore County, Maryland, there are current big building projects for Kaiser Permanente and other private companies. Nothing is going to change here even though this story where a solid middle class family tried to find care for a sick parent badly in need of emergency care should make us think about our values.
Against my better self, I’m starting the think that those who have taken a purposeful decision not to vaccinate should be left to their own devices.

I’m so sorry for the professor’s loss of her father- truly tragic and I completely agree with her sentiments about the unvaxxed. Her anger and frustrations are absolutely warranted - there’s no excuse for this level of immense selfishness and delusion that’s destroying our country on so many levels. And the spinelessness of the CDC isn’t much help either. Same with many state and local politicians- I live in MN right next to Iowa and where our hospitals have been bursting at the seams as well…frightening.

You are lying by omission. The context of this quote is in the current Omnicron phase of rapid spreading, but milder cases for the vaccinated. The "limited protection" provides this, but your condition could worsen without a booster even with two doses. He's not saying don't bother with a vaccination, he's saying the virus is spreading so quickly that the first and second doses aren't as effective now.

My close high school friend is in the hospital right now with septic poisoning.not in an ICU bed; she's in the ER and put on a ventilator NOT for covid, but just to try and keep her alive until she can get a bed. I feel sad that your Dad and others who needed emergency care and did all the right things like getting vaccinated could not get the care they needed in time to potentially have saved their lives. It truly is a tragedy that is ongoing at this time without a definite solution. I think the United States has to do better to come up with a solution. We should have a hospital or two in each state dedicated to non-covid patient care to treat sepsis patients, cancer patients, car accident victims, cardiac patients, perform needed surgeries, etc.,
Even if each state could not provide a hospital or two dedicated to non-covid patient care, at least there should be a few of the large hospitals that can provide emergency department care with dedicated beds to non-covid patients and to keep a unit dedicated to non-covid care to accidents victims, cancer patients, sepsis patients, surgical patients, etc. This is the United States! We should be able to come up with a solution to this problem. Thank you to the daughter who in her grief was willing to talk about this critical problem with the health care system that will continue unless we take action to make serious changes to the hospital care in each state.

I clicked on this video hoping to at least hear an argument "of both sides", but what i got instead was 18 minutes of a very heartbreaking and bleak story. I was moved. I feel though that there are a variety of reasons why people don't get vaccinated. Far right wing, far left wing, everybody has mistrust in their heart. I am sorry. It is so tragic what happened to your family. Especially so close to the holidays. My 9 and 11year old nephews lost their mother and my brother's wife on Jan 4, 2022. She was a vibrant and healthy young woman. No pre-existing conditions. The right atrium of her heart refused to respond to any treatment. One of the doctors whom attempted to save her, insinuated the vaccine may have cost her, her life. He said she was not the first 40-50 year old, type O-, he had seen. He suggested that a small percentage of people in this group had experienced a dramatic outcome. This whole pandemic has been outrageous. It's such a cruel lottery. On the one hand, the vast majority of people could have been saved, had they not been persuaded to take it lightly. On the other, the life-saving vaccine could be killing a few of us.
