    It's shocking how battalions of men, on either side of the screen, can slowly march into the blood bath in front of them.

      Ancient military tactics. The idea was to save their breath until upon the enemy. And soldiers indeed marched slowly into fire the first weeks of WW1 as well, until everybody eventually understod they had to charge the enemy by running as fast as they could.

      Thor Son, Well that pretty much goes without saying. However, If they ran everywhere there would be no formations, and the only way for musket fire to be effective was in tight formations.

      +Thor Son That's one insanely simple explination of tactics (which never existed in that way).

      It was just the way wars were fought back then. If thats how you fought then thats how you fought, people wouldn't really question it.

      Concentration of mass and firepower with formations. If they spread out they would be easily be picked off cavalry and overall unable to hold anything away. Weapons were also highly inaccurate over distances.

    Pierre made a terrible choice of battle to observe. Borodino was a slaughterhouse, with the French and Russians just going at each other head on for 12 hours, with massive casualties on both sides. BTW, in the book Pierre is a big man, he's described many times as 'tall', 'fat' or 'stout'. That's an important part of his persona but the BBC is like, "Nah, doesn't matter!"

      Yeah, Pierre is supposed to look a little like the author Tolstoy. Since he partially based his personality off of him.

    In my opinion, I still hold my stance that the 1966-1968 War and Peace by Sergei Bondarchuk is by far the most amazing movie adaption, the series is amazing but the film will always hold a place in my heart.

      It is a remarkable film, though it was possibly a mistake for me to see it right after reading the novel. It's still a shadow of Tolstoy, particularly in the latter parts of the story, where the short shrift given to some characters lessens the impact considerably for me.

    besides the obvious cinematic advantage, why is Pierre not in uniform? Or have I forgotten something from the book?

    • @nicolasrostov2478
      @nicolasrostov2478 7 років тому +29

      Pierre does not have a uniform because he is not a soldier. He is only present in Borodino to observe the battle and to understand why these men are not afraid of death. In the book, he finds himself in the midst of this redoubt in spite of himself.
