- Join us as we react to the fourth episode of Arcane titled Happy Progress Day! 6-7 years have past for these characters since we last saw them. Vi is revealed to be imprisoned, Powder has become a true badass using all of her explosive tools at her advantage. Jayce and Viktor are living in a world shaped by the progress that hextech has given them in the last few years. We hear about the new hexgates they developed which work very much like a teleporter. Caitlyn is trying to make a difference...a real difference as we start to unravel some of the corruption that is happening in Topside. This episode is magnificently written. We get to see new perspective to these characters and learn their new motivations. As well as the introduction of this mysterious rebellion group called Fire lights. It should be noted that it wasn't Vi at the beginning of the episode. That was just a random pink-haired girl that triggered Jinx’s trauma... and then Jinx shot her dead. Vi hadn't been seen since being dragged away by Marcus at the end of episode 3, and her actual first appearance was at the end of this episode (4).
Absolutely! We didn’t have time to go over it. But during our full reaction and while editing we noticed how at first she does see Vi. But it’s all in her head. I love how they did that. We didn’t expect to have an unrealizable narrator but absolutely love how it was done! 😃
Speaks to Jinx’s mental state that she quite casually shoots a stranger in the back because ‘feelings.’ Some used to argue whether Jinx or Harley ‘did crazy better.’ Harley is the humorous Hollywood version of ‘crazy,’ which just comes across as entitled violence for the sake of a cool set piece. Jinx is actually schizophrenic, or at least prone to debilitating flashbacks, which constantly torment her and lead to sometimes violent outbursts. There’s barely two or three moments in the whole series where she seems actually at peace. It just reinforces to me the intelligence of the writing that they didn’t revert to the ‘funny crazy’ trope to describe her, and reinforces the complexity of everybody in this series.
Except for Caitlyn. Caitlyn is perfect, and must be worshipped.
Caitlyn is so wholesome! She’s so good! Also completely agree with how they depicted her mental state. I think rather than being cheap and low key disrespect like some films that fall in that trap. They really explore the nuance and complexities while offering deeper layers to her character 👏 absolutely well done

I noticed everybody talks about Jinx trauma but nobody talks about Vi trauma. being put in prison illegaly for years where she was beaten constantly is devastating for a person.

Jinx' entrance is just Iconic, as a former Jinx main and die-hard fan of hers I am always fangirling so hard when I see this scene :D Usually only Heroes get this kind of entrance^^
The time skip is around 6-7 years, so Jinx is not about 15-16 and Vi around 20-21.
Always gives me chills when I see it. That whole sequence on the airship is so amazing, prolly my favorite action set piece in the series.
Omg the air sequence, and the intro of her character is absolutely BADASS!!! It's always so satisfying to see how a character grows/changes, especially when it's such a drastic shift - it's both satisfying to see how awesome she is, and heartbreaking when we know what it took for her to get to this point...
4:06 that there is called a Poro. Native to the snowy region of the Freljord. A region I'd enjoy seeing Arcane adapt. Or even just an animation of the comics they already made.

Silco specifically told jinx not to do anything...to take some time. The last thing he wanted was dead enforcers bringing attention. He's happy for the gemstone though 😃
Yeah! She brought something invaluable. He is in for a ride once he sees the potential of these gemstones 😄
One thing to always ask yourself when looking at a character is, what is their motive? Everything they do has a reason, and that reason is usually selfish. I.e, Mel is making eyes at Jayce because she wants his Hex Tech to improve her own portfolio. Viktor is trying to find a cure for his ailment, and is convinced Hex Tech can provide it. Even Caitlyn is determined to become an investigator because she wants to distance herself from her parents’ position of privilege. The motives are always the key, and every action follows from them.
Absolutely agreed! Especially when it's a show like this where the use of perspective is so nuanced and well-crafted, it allows you to fully dive into each character, and rather than just seeing them in black or white, you appreciate their shades of grey, their wants and needs, and what drives them to do what they do. They feel like real human beings!
I only mildly disagree with you because I wouldn't they all have selfish motives because even though selfishness maybe part of it but it's not that they're entirety cuz the same thing goes for Mel Jace Victor heimendinger and so on and so forth even though they may seem as though they have only selfish intentions even their selfishness comes with a bit of benevolence behind it that's part of what makes the world so terrifying because in the day most villains like silco are typically only villains because they believe that they are in the right it's also why it's so easy to have a correct mother figure or later figured because even though they may have positive outward-facing motivations they could still have very clearly selfish ones like shido for Persona 5 for my jrpg nerds

It's also the amount of people she lost: Vander, Mylo, Claggor, her parents and Powder. I'm pretty sure the 5 is for the ones who actually died and the 1 is for Powder, who is alive.

I freaking love Jinx’s Arcane design, and the microexpressions they animate on her face is just next level. Not even mentioning how they depict her mental state in that scribble like manner accompanied with Mylo and Claggor’s voices that give you the chills. And ofc, Jinx’s VA Ella Purnell deserves massive credit for how she voices Jinx. The strain you can hear in her voice and the occasional small cracks is just… UGH SO GOOD! I love everything about her character
We LOVE LOVE LOVE this iteration of Jinx. It’s such a layered performance as well! We agree with you 100% on that. Really loved seeing her a bit older now and how she interacted with the characters. Such a badass!
Love how they say Vi and Jinx are doing great after seeing Jinx have a mental breakdown and that Vi is in prison.

Also, I would highly recommend watching the Imagine Dragons "Enemy" video before watching episode 7 (backstory to the episode) and at some time you need to watch the "Worlds 2021 Show Open" It will blow your minds!

One of the lesser details I do appreciate from this episde is Caitlyn's coworker, we initially see them picking on her, for her status, but the moment the fire situation breaks out, they spring into action and even listens to her with no hesitation.
Yeah! True camaraderie! When it comes to the real stuff they got each others backs
Yes! The rough tough enforcers will run into a fire if they think there’s somebody trapped, without a moment of hesitation. I also love the way Caitlyn doesn’t try to play her status - she seems very quiet and embarrassed about the whole deal.
Of course cops go corrupt, if u give people a lot of power and a shitty wage where they can hardly make a living, that is a dangerous fucking combo.. if something happens in their life that makes the economy suffer they will find means to save their family and once they've got the taste for money once they will do it again until they feel like if they are getting away with it, why not?
I think the entire show is amazing at showing different sides like that, the world is never black and white and each character, be it for good or bad, they have their reasons
I just loved the ending in this episode, seeing Vi in that cell, joining the story again ❤
Absolutely right! Loved how grey the plot and its characters was. It made it feel real, the characters making decisions based on their circumstances. And a nuanced way of storytelling.

They are everywhere across the Runeterra even the Shadow Iles so they are more untouched than Yordles or Spirits form Bandle city {Yumi and Pix}. 😑

There are ways to minimize misuse, but Heimerdinger comes across as delusional levels of ignorant here. If it can break stone, it can break bone. If it can cut steel, it can cut flesh. There is no perfect safety. Way to minimize misuse and mishandling, but never completely.
And some of the better safeguards don't require Viktor and Jayce. Oversight of equipment is not something they're going to be good at building. Deadman safety switches, sure, but making sure people put them back and the right people get them? That is something to delegate. They can't micromanage everything!
Absolutely agreed! Some risk is absolutely necessary for change and growth, and that is where you need pioneers like Jayce and Viktor. Heimerdinger's fear of the past is 100% understandable, but it has given him the false illusion that it is the material itself that must be controlled, (and to a degree it must) but it's merely a tool- it's human beings that will find ways to misuse it and to be fair, that is a little naive.
hello Media Knights, wait a bit before giving them comments since seeing them react to this series motivated me to subscribe and it really came to many of us who saw the series exactly one year ago since I saw it. The events of the first 3 eps left us with an intro that was not expected in many animated series and some live action that using images give us more than a thousand words, we already know who the characters are and their motivations but we did not know their development or path, we see that Arcane does everything with rhyme, since in the first episodes we saw Silco and Vander twinned by a vision separate and face each other, two very close sisters separate and now two young visionaries who begin to separate or the beginning of said separation , with a slight spoiler, it will not be Victor who fails first, what in the classics is the jealous partner, here we see someone more dedicated and another more comfortable.

It's always weird the episode where everyone's forward motivation into questioning Mels character even though even tho her very first appearance in episode 2 is her saying exactly that her family is a family of wealth and Prestige and she is the lowest on the totem pole so our primary objective is to get her country state to be number one not to mention her and Jace have been giving each other googly eyes ever since the court hearing and in front of heimendinger door. I also low-key understand Kate's parents not that I agree they should keep her hidden from the world but their daughter is less than 30 and almost blew up twice and I've always had the feeling Jace was just trying to help her continue her dream saying with you don't want his to be stopped by his parents but couldn't do anything from his point of view same way she couldn't do anything for his
Yeah It took us a while to trust Mel. Once she actually verbalized her motives and we saw she was sincere we trusted her completely. Specially by those episodes in Act III. Such complex characters! We love the writing in this show😁

Mel is by far my favorite character because of her nuances and because apparently her character as a whole shed light to some of the general fear of pretty privilege because end of the day what really sets her apart from all the other sympathetic yet selfish characters is that her backstory didn't show up until episode 8 but her motivation was stated ever since episode 2 and there still some people who swear and do like the last 5 minutes of episode 9 that she's evil. Even tho in her very first scene and from then on everything she's technically done if you look at it from a broader Spectrum has been for other people she may have been just as guilty of having a selfish opening motivation and forgetting the undercity like all the other counselors due to ignorance but even before episode 8 she saves Jace from banishment protects, Jayce and Victor from heimendinger, funds their experiments, she gave Jace the reins to control his own experiment and defend it from those who want to misuse it, she helps Jace defend his power when other people try to steal it and although people may count this as one of her manipulations all she did was teach him how to play the game that she was playing her whole life (personally I blame Jayce for not checking the difference between wine from a foreign country and Shifty barrels full of purple stuff from the undercity), and she was there with Jace the whole time as well throughout the time skip she just wasn't one of the science Bros the most people didn't pay their relationship a lot of attention even though they were giving each other do me eyes since his court hearing. It makes me wonder how creepy selfish or otherwise some of the other characters would seem without their backstories proceeding their character
Well, Cait actually around 21-22, just like Vi and Jinx is 17-18
Btw if you haven't realized it yet, then Arcane and riot in general have a talent for cliffhangers.

A litle warning for next episode, it heavily features a specific song from Imagine Dragons. People are correct that Riot's own music won't be hit, but any music where they partner with other bands you can run into issues.

You guys like to cut your "like and subscribe" edit after you watch the episode. May i suggest you do ep 9 cut before you watch it. Only because it seems most have difficulty coming back to reality on the final scene. some longer than others.

I know guys 🙁 I wish I could keep most of it but trust me when I say. The copyright flags are a nightmare! Every time you get one you have to go back and re edit, re export and it’s so time consuming. And that is after the initial edit. Sometimes we must keep it within the safe boundaries to make sure something uploads on schedule. These are highlights of the reaction but I can understand how some might be wanting more. However for the next episodes I can assure you they’ll be a little longer and cover the important aspects. You probably already know this but we do have full versions available on patreon. We both have day jobs at the moment so supporting through there allows us to take more time off to take care of the edits. And hopefully having more time means uploading a video however many times we need to until we don’t get flagged anymore.
