Why do they call them that anyways, EPs...what are we extending here exactly? Like, playtime? Nobody gave me a good answer :/

Spotify should have EPs in the album section instead of the single section. EPs are very important in many artists work but are really easy to accidentally ignore on streaming because of how they're packaged.
Yeah, I always think I finish an artists discography and then I look at the singles and realize some of them are EPs
@@mocapcow2933 one of my favorite artists Noah Kahan published the EP Cape Elizabeth which was a big turning point in his career and includes a few of his best songs (imo) and only big fans of his know about it because of how it's packaged online. Super frustrating especially now that he's more popular it deserves attention
Yes. I had that issue recently when I found out that Carly Rae Jepsen put out a B side for her album Emotion that was considered an EP. It wasn’t listened with the rest of her albums.
Or in their own EP section
@@ogpandamonium that would be better than what we have currently but I feel like EPs are a type of albums just as opposed to LPs. And people might not listen to stuff in the EP section because they don't know what an EP is. But maybe normalizing it on streaming would help people understand what an EP was? It's kind of a complicated issue But I think either solution would be suitable
I’ve found that EPs are some of my favorite projects ever, idk something about the concise nature of it and the lower likelihood of filler makes them very enjoyable from my favorite artists
Solace by Earl is one of my favorite projects ever. So I feel you.
You nailed it man, too many albums have filler nowadays. It makes much more sense to me to make a project with a few songs that are quality rather than adding in mid songs just for streams.
@@mocapcow2933 same with unlocked by Denzel for me
One thing people forget is that making an album gets really expensive, real quick. So especially for artists that are just starting, putting out an EP first helps to get recognition and fanbase to justify dropping so much money recording, producing, mixing and mastering an album. That's why you'll notice many of your favourite bands started their careers by releasing an EP before their first album
An EP can either be the amount of songs or it's runtime from my knowledge, like anywhere up to 20 or so minutes I think.
Yeah, 25 minutes is the max most EPs were allowed, but now that music is digital it's all up to the artist, I think? The timing thing was just so it can fit on a vinyl record back in the day, so now the 10 song EP he mentioned could work if it was digital or a CD
@@pentagraham5842Kendrick’s debut “EP” was over an hour lon

Man I love this guys videos. He's always covering interesting topics ( mostly music ) in a creative way.
Dudes animation style is unique and awesome. Super enthusiastic voice as well
Also just wanted to mention that post rock is one of the few genres where 5 songs is enough for a full length album
My heart is melting~
for real, thanks for the words m8 ✌️
@@chip1464 what is post rock?
@@-Teague- imagine a regular rock song, but you take the vocals away, so instead of using guitars and drums to accompany lyricism, they drive the song forward themselves. they create emotions as the guitarists and drummers use them in non traditional ways to progress the song.
post rock songs can range from 9 to 25 minutes, but this post rock song from my favourite post rock album "departure songs" is minutes. its incredible

for me the main difference between an ep and a lp isn't the number of songs on it, but really just the overall length of the project. if it's under 30 minutes it's probably an ep
K-Pop Mini albums, as much as I love them, can be really really confusing when you don’t pay attention. As in, they’re labelled ‘the _st/nd/rd mini album’, so it’s really weird to see ‘the 1st album’ on a release.
Anyway, one of my favourite non-k-pop EPs is ‘In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country’. 20 mins of perfection.
What makes it even more confusing is that there are some EP's that are almost an hour long such as Car Seat Headrest's - How to Leave Town, and albums such as Jethro Tull's - Thick as A Brick being comprised of 2 parts of the same song, being 43 minutes, however it's considered to be an LP. There really is no way to discern which is what and what is which. The term is used very loosely and for rare cases where an EP is longer than an LP, I think it's better to not worry about the terminology that much.
I think the reason that I, as an artist, put out EPs as opposed to LPs for now, is because I'm a little scatterbrained when it comes to ideas. I'll get an idea, find that I can carry that for a couple songs, but then find another idea I could fit it to. I love the flexibility I can have with my creativity, being able to have a somewhat diverse discography at a very early stage in my art. I love your perspectives on the art form, gives me a little more insight into how others might see my work.
thank you very much for mentioning madeon and danger 💙🖤 both my all time favorite artists :)
I usually think of an EP as like 3 - 5 or 6 songs and less than 25 minutes. In the DIY/independent rock and Metal scene I think EPs play a very important roll, because they can be made relatively quickly to keep people's attention with new releases but still allow you to release a "project" that's cohesive, where the songs compliment each other.
3:05 finally someone is talking about the slim shady ep

I always define singles, EPs/mini albums, and albums by runtime as tracks always vary in length as you pointed out at the end. 30min is an album. Although it gets a bit confusing when artists market smaller projects as albums (looking at you, Joji) but then again, and EP is really just a small album, like a small photo album is a small collection of photos.
Another BANGER as always🗣️
Really liking these new designs!
Really cool video! 👍
One thing I do want to point out is that, if I remember the definition correctly, it's either 7 songs or 26 minutes or less (which is why Green Day's Father of All is an album because it squeeked by with 10 seconds to spare).
This becomes an interesting case with something like the NIN discography because if you look at singles like Head Like A Hole, that borders on like, 40 minutes and it's still seen as a "single".
Honestly, an entire essay can be given on how odd the NIN discography is with its Halo numbering system...
the amount of times i had to playback goddamn it lmfao you made this video REAL quick.
damn, always love it when this guy is existing
Slayers haunting the chapel is my favourite ep. It was originally 3 songs but they eventually added a song they only released on a compilation album to the later releases
So glad to see Collision Course talked about

"Lyfe" by Yeat and "GO+" by SoFaygo are considered EP's to them but they're both 12 songs so it really gets confusing cause that could literally just be an album or even a mixtape but they market it as an EP.
was just thinking about that
those are albums I do not care how they market it as. They probably just didn't want to spend album money especially sofaygo.
I've never seen a less correct video in my life.
An EP actually stands for Emma Pipedream, which was a very popular album released by The Twelve Inch Records in the late 40s in such a format that people started copying it.
The format in question being a record that's incredibly thick and small, similar to a shellac 78 but with the aforementioned size differences. Typically they're made out of multiple layers of sheeted aluminum foil and supposedly sound of much better quality than typical vinyl records because of them being magnetized. They spun at 16 RPM to justify their small disk-size and had to be played on a Grammophone.
You can also put them in the microwave for exactly 33 seconds to create an entirely new record (which only select bands took advantage of, including The Twelve Inch Records). This made it so 4 sides could be on one disc.
EPs could also be recorded onto by consumers via a complex combination of etching, magnetizing and microwaving, however the machines required to make these recordings in a high enough fidelity for a pleasant listening experience were far too expensive to justify anyone purchasing them, hence no archival mentions of them.
Due to the fact they had to be played on a Grammophone, their notorious issues with users over-microwaving them, and the nature of the aluminum foil, EPs sold relatively poorly and were quite fragile so most didn't last long. However the format was brought back, and to pay homage to the few records that took advantage of the additional 2 sides, some digitally released EPs are abnormally longer than they should be. Hence EPs with 7+ tracks.
Small Bites, you seriously need to get your facts straight before releasing a video. I expected better content, especially from a music creator.
Keep up the good work! Maybe the next video will be about maybe CDs?
something interesting to note about nine inch nails is the single [otherwise labeled as an ep] released for head like a hole that had ten [or eleven depending on the release] tracks that ended up being longer than pretty hate machine.
Ngl I got so happy when I saw that Chrome Sparks cover, he really deserves so much more recognition
These videos are always my highlight of the time since the last one came out.
6:53 Yeah, you right, they quick. BUT NOT WHEN I NEED TO REWATCH EVERY SMALLEST CLIP FOR 5 TO 10 TIMES BECAUSE YOU MAKE THEM SO FUNNY!! i'm totally really mad rn

Car Seat Headrest's how to leave town has 9 songs and is 62 mins long, but it's still an EP. honestly, I see them as longer singles rather than shorter albums
to be fair autechre's quaristice.quadrange ep is like 4 hours long altogether and that's somehow an ep
I've been listening to the full discography of my favourite Vocaloid producer lately, and it's made me aware of a concept in Japan called the doujin album, or indie album. As the name implies they're usually self-published (even if the artist is actually with a label), are usually produced at home, and are typically shorter than an album, but are longer than an EP - 5 to 7 or even 8 songs, with runtimes of 30 to 40 or even 50 minutes, are pretty typical for them. They're typically sold on specialized music sites, on the artist's own website, or physically at conventions like Comiket.
They're pretty neat! I like them; they can contain some real bangers, and because they're at least more substantial than an EP, you don't feel like you're missing out if one of them stays confined to a doujin album. They do lack the full cohesion that makes a proper major album release, however. In a way you could just think of them as *B I G E P*
I got too excited when I saw you posted a new video and smacked my bad knee into the sink totally worth it tho lol
2 videos in less than a month - am I dreaming?
When the world needed him the most, he returned.
One of my all-time favorite EP's is Four Year Strong's "Go Down in History" from 2014. It's only 5 tracks, a tight 16 minutes, and it gives a sampling of the band in one of its best eras, in my opinion: RIGHT after they got off one of their least good albums and pendulum swung back into their groove. Highly recommend it as one of their best releases, even better than some albums, especially if you like Pop Punk / Easycore and don't have a lot of time.
5:35 I love this bit
An EP is meant to usually contain 4 songs (2 songs on each side)

Wait until he finds out about Thick As A Brick.
really cool to hear chrome sparks get a brief mention, dude def does not get enough recognition
Another cool mention is As Ugly As They Wanna Be by Ugly Kid Joe. It is the best selling debut ep to date with 2 million copies sold.
I agree a lot with your sentiments on EPs. The worst is when you want a physical of an EP that never got reissued after the first run.
Also, does Mike Oldfield‘s Tubular Bells count as an EP or a single having only two tracks? :P
It's a 70's progressive rock record and it's 50 minutes long, so I'm gonna have to say it's an album on this one.
Shoutout to the metal band Reverend Bizarre. Their songs and albums are so long that evem their EPs are over an hour
God rest this man's soul when he learns of Thick As A Brick

my favorite example of an odd ep is the beach boys' "mount vernon and fairway: a fairy tale", which was packaged as a bonus ep with the initial release of their album holland. unlike most eps, this is a 20 minute long story with original music both as the background of the narration and as little in-betweens, there's some real gems in there and honestly i think it might be just a little bit better than the album it was a bonus to lol
that's a great EP. I think Brian was a bit out of the band's Rock™style on Holland, so he worked out a fairy tale bonus to include in the package. Kind of a hidden gem in their catalog because its stranger than most of "SMiLE" imo.
I find it silly to go by number of songs. I'd say if it's under 30ish minutes, it's an EP
I like the rise again EP from crush 40. One of those days from it is one of my favorites from crush 40

Hey osb! I noticed Pogo’s logo in the background. Could you do a video on him?
Hello bites. Nice video. 👍🏿

This band Why? releases an EP after every album that serves as a replacement for a bonus track deluxe album. I like it better that way to keep an album feeling like its own separate snapshot of a band.
Kendrick Lamar’s self titled EP is *15* tracks long. He even brings up how “revolutionary” the idea is on The Heart Part 2.
Also, a bit surprised you didn’t bring up Paradise by Lana Del Rey at all. The project has 8 songs, but it was meant to be “extras” for Born To Die, creating the album’s “Paradise Edition”. The normal EP has the 8 songs, but then the Paradise Edition of BTD has one extra song along with all of Paradise. So, technically, it has nine tracks.
But, no one really considers it her second album like they do Ultraviolence. She released it the same year as Born To Die, and, as I implied, it’s basically an add on project with semi-similar production, not its own separate project.
But, like how My Dear Melancholy is home to Call Out My Name, one of Abel’s biggest hits, Paradise contains Ride, which many consider to be one of Lana’s best songs.
It’s also one of her most ambitious projects music video wise. Ride’s music video is very well praised in the fandom for its monologue by Lana that cuts before and after the main song part of the video. She also made a half hour short film named Tropico that complied three other songs from the project, along with plenty of monologuing and dialogue.
Yoooooo!!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉

6:54 English progressive rock band, Yes, has an album from 1972, which contains only 3 songs. The album is 38 minutes long, and the shortest song on the record is almost 9 minutes long. This is a common thing in the progressive rock genre. The album is called "Close to the Edge", and it's on of their biggest, if not the biggest albums of all of their career. They also have another very long album, called "Tales from Topographic Oceans", which contains only 4 songs, and is over 80 minutes long. Do these works count as EPs? (> v o)?
You should do a video on Album Skits
i think a better way to determine if a release is an EP or not is to look at how long the entire release is. Sleep's "Dopesmoker" is 2 songs, but its an hour and eleven minutes long. its not really a single. i think if a project is longer than 40 minutes, than its an album. 10 - 30 minutes is an EP, and
In that case, many artists like Bruno Mars have not made a single album in their entire career.
I feel like Dopesmoker and other long doom metal songs like Mirror Reaper aren't really anything. They're just an experience
Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada by Godspeed You! Black Emperor is the greatest ep ever made
Nine inch nails broken is a great ep although the downward spiral is peak nine inch nails
i think what differenciates an album and an EP is the length (most of the time) usually an EP is less than 25 minutes but an album is longer than that :)
I think that it's more about the duration than the number of tracks to be considered an album or ep
As a artist in my own right, I love crafting EPs rather than albums. It’s a good way to get your foot in the door the the music industries without the commitment of making a full length album, I’ve yet to release an album but when I do it’ll be great because my EP projects have already given me the experience on what to do to craft a great narrative for an album.
i like eps cause is when an artist wanna a projetc but less song, it turns more concise in the end
Broken is such a great ep its like the downward spiral except WAY more noisey and metal oriented as oposes to the alternative electronic art rock and of course electronic body music of that alblums its also the loudest most metal project he made not his most unfriendly that honor goes to year zero that alblum is non stop glitch static and imprvisation catchy hard techno beats and of course the noisy synth breakdowns i love those parts
The OG Maco EP is 15 tracks long i distinctly remember wondering what defined an EP when i saw it because it’s almost an hour long
Kill at will by ice cube, the light pack by Joey bad are pretty good!
You should make a vid on singles bro

Yooooo!
I think the difference between the albums and EPs should be their purpose rather than how many songs they have or how long their runtime are. There are like 55 minute EPs that are longer than most albums but still does its job as an EP.
Also I think constant pushes of mini LPs are making less quality projects in KPOP. We could've get better full length projects from many groups right now if the market wasn't so oversaturated.
Ain't no way you talked about EPs without mentioning Lil Ugly Mane, he makes the best ones😢

Car Seat Headrest have an EP thats over an hour long, How To Leave Town.
For some more information on how most streaming services decided if it's an album or ep, it has to be 3-7 tracks or less than 30 minutes. Of course, this only applies to indie artists. A label can decide whatever they want. But most third party distributors have the 3-7 tracks and
Is It Weird That My Favorite EP Is Kim Petras's S Pop?
I feel like that was more of a mixtape.
I like eps sure sometimes. There like literally 7 minutes but thats still fine especially if they make like a million companion eps to there alblums and also i like how some are alblum length but stull only a few tracks because that means you can make longer tracks without felling like a big ol drag not that it usually is but eps can do it better
The music distrobutor amuse has ep’s defined as 4-6 songs with a total lenght of under 30 minutes (if it has 7 songs or is over 30 minute it is an album)
In my opinion, an ep can be an amazing way to test out a different sound, without having to worry about your fans thinking "i can't believe these guy's changed their sound" or just to release your best tracks without any filler.
A great example of an album i think should've been an ep is AJJ's "The Bible 2" Some of their best songs are on that album, but only about 7 on their are really worth anything. With the rest being either really forgettable, or really boring. So anyways, an ep can be a good way to release music without having to worry about people seeing your album as filler. Or thinking that you've changed your sound completely, in case your fans don't like it. A good way to test the waters of sort
