Why Was Darth Maul Nearly Beaten By Pre Vizsla During Their Duel For The Mandalorian Darksaber?

- In what is likely the most brutal scene ever shown in a kids TV show, Darth Maul disarms Pre Vizsla and then beheads him. However, there are several occasions during the duel where Pre Vizsla almost beats Maul and he was even able to disarm the sith with his blaster. At first this makes little sense. Maul is a Sith who has fought the likes of Palpatine, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, while Pre Vizsla isn’t even force sensitive. However, we have to remember the purpose of this duel. Maul wanted to convince the Death Watch that he was the superior duelist and rightful ruler of mandalore, and therefore he did not use the force to easily defeat Vizsla as they would have seen this as dishonourable cheating.

The fact that he didn't even used the Force to defeat Vizla prove how badass Maul is.
And he would occasionally wield his saber with the left hand just to taunt the deathwatch

I think Maul not using the force was intentional. After all it was a duel for influence, and if he just force chocked Vizla to death, none of the mandalorians would consider that fair
Got to consider that he did use it to enhance his reflexes here and there. Without force he wouldn't block Vizsla blaster shots

I think it’s because Mandalorian weaponry is literally made to beat force users. In a sense Maul held back by not force choking him straight up. But otherwise, I see no problem with Pre Vizla almost beating him. Even Obi Wan struggled fighting Mandos, and he beat Maul

What are you talking about Kenobi never defeated Maul the Sith defeated and killed Qui Gon then defeated and almost killed obi wan then the kid used the force to jump pick up his master's lighsaber and almost kill Maul he didn't die right away he survived on a junk planet perhaps raxis prime he survived on what scraps of food he found then savage his brother found him brought him back then went on to fight obi wan again after capturing him and swept him like trash even after Kenobi learned a new fighting style and everything Maul didn't fight no one for a long time ten years and he still was a fierce fighter
Even without the force, Darth Maul done turned Pre Vizsla into Post Vizsla.
This fight scene was so grisly that there was even a deleted scene where you can even see Pre Visla's head moving around after Maul beheaded him. Darth Maul really went full on Game of Thrones level of instant kill. Major Savage moment for our favorite sith (lord) if you asked me 🔥🔥🔥

I think the most brutal scene was in Maul's hallway scene after Ashoka freed him and he just pulled that clone into the closing door to get his arm cut off
We should remember that the Mandalorians have tactics made for killing Jedi, so it wouldn't be much different to kill a former Sith.

@@xavierlavoie9264 When Sidious sensed Maul's supposed death, he didn't hesitate to take Dooku as an apprentice. So since there can only be 2 Sith, Maul was discarded.

@@Ben_Kimber Unlikely, he tried the same thing on Ben Kenobi/old man Obi-wan in Rebels. He only acted honourably or on a more near equal playing field per se to both humiliate Vizsla infront of the other Mando’s, and show honour that would win their favour if he being a worthy leader.

@@francescotonini6268Imo, no. At least not in Legends continuity, where Jango not only killed 6 jedi with his bare hands, but was also Mand'alor himself at one point.
People forget that most Mandalorian technology was designed to exploit the weakness of force sensitives.
Grapple hooks and cables can tie force users up, stopping them from using their hands and thus the force.
Jetpacks to distance themselves from lightsabers.
Wrist blasters for quick a violent ranged attacks
Swords/Lightsabers to duel and combat the enemy head on.
And most importantly, flame throwers.... For obvious reasons...
Pre Vizla utilized all of these during the fight and nearly succeeded as a result, give some credit to Vizla.
Above average Jedi and sith would kill a manadalorians with ease. But a highly skilled mandolorian maybe low to mid difficulty
Maul said it himself, “I challenge you! *Warrior to warrior!* Only the strongest shall rule Mandalore!!!”
And I love that Pre Visla is honorable about it, and even once he's beaten he accepts his execution, stating that he acknowledges and respects that Maul was stronger than him, and a better fit to rule
I think they were paying referencing kotor in a very subtle and non-direct way as filoni has many times in the past. In kotor 2 on duxn you could partake in duels in the battle circle, as a Jedi you couldn’t use the force while duelling among other gadgets. You just had to use the chosen weapon of the opponent. The last one you fight, Bralor wanted you to not hold back at all and use everything at your disposal.
After completed you end up earning their respect and they become really good allies that are pivotal to the story later on. The way they were portrayed in those games were so badass with their honour based culture and it’s my favourite aspect of star wars.
Shame a lot of the younger fans haven’t played those games as they’re peak storytelling. Going a bit off topic now but man, kotor, the rogue squadron games, Jedi knight games and republic commando. My childhood was an absolute blast.

Although Maul did not utilize any force attacks during their duel, we all know he can sense Pre Vizla's intent and next move through the force.
I feel like being trained as a Jedi it's basically taught to be another reflex, it's likely something they can't turn off unless they're experienced enough as a Jedi master

@Tsundere Enthusiast not every sith was jedi, for some all they know is the sith and were trained to be sith and taught the ways of the Force by sith and were never jedi at all. I guess you can play the game of semantics and say sith teachings derive from jedi teachings but when you take a second look their teachings are completely different when it comes to the force

You forgot that Pre Vizla is a mandalorian. They fought against the Jedi for hundrets or maybe even thousends of years and in this time they specialized their gear especially for hunting Jedi. It's not different when fighting a sith.
It actually makes a huge difference if you fight against a Jedi or Sith. Also the Sith during CW (Maul, Dooku, Sidious) are much stronger than the average Jedi or Jedi Master since even Savage managed to kill a Jedi Master (Adi Gallia) without much effort. Not to mention the two Jedi he demolished within seconds. There were also no Sith seen since thousand years so Mandalorians don’t have any experience with Sith.
No amount of training would make a regular person fast or strong enough to defeat a trained force user. They have precognition and super speed.
I remember Maul resorting to the force only after Vizla used his jetpack to get out of reach.

even in the same movie, obi-wan could've used it to catch up but didn't. they never should've introduced it tbh it was really goofy.

This shows both their characters. Maul evidently holding a warrior's honor to prove him the true worthy ruler and Pre Vizla who devoted himself to the ancient Mandalorians renowned as hardened Jedi (aka Force users, shout out to my SWTOR Bounty Hunter) killers. Both were worthy in character, however it all came down to skill, and when Pre's zealotry caused him to abandon his in hastening his victory, Maul, a deadly assassin, essentially ended the fight by disabling and then disarming Pre of the Dark Saber. Seriously one of the best duels in Star Wars!

I’d say that it’s because Pre Vizla also sort of cheated by using the Jetpack and guns. He would have been taken out even easier if he hadn’t been able to rely on them
He also use a flamethrower. It is really hard to deflect flames with the force

And then there is of course the fact Mandalorian vambraces were specifically designed to mimic/counter Force abilities.
So while Maul was essentially fighting with one hand tied behind his back, Vizla used the full arsenal available to any Mandalorian.
Because the writers wanted a compelling and close fight, its not that hard folks.

clone wars a was a brutal cartoon. it shows several characters dying painfully, and show several characters finding a painful offscreen demise (characters eaten, falling into pits, unnamed liquids, eyc.) several long drawn out deaths of characters we grew to love
There was also that clone that got crushed/cut in half in a ventilation system.

What? I am confused, Maul absolutely conquered Pre-Vizsla without hardly any effort. I do have to admit every battle no matter how skilled the duelists has its risks that could end either combatants life or change the course of their fates, but Maul had that win through and through.
Pre Vizsla went out like a true Mandalorian warrior. Salute.

To be fair Mandalorains have fought force users for a long time in many wars...so its not surprising how well Vizla did here holding his own...They have tech specifically to combat force users ..they even had special cages for them when captured...Yeah ...

In the legends book Lockdown, Sidious orders Maul to infiltrate an orbiting penitentiary to discover the identity of an arms dealer that was irritating the Emperor, was ordered not to use any force abilities to conceal his actual agenda, and had to rely solely on his combat skills to survive....excellent read!
Maul was toying with visla the entire fight. He let him use all his mandalorian tricks and then defeated him once finding a clear opening
People are forgetting he knocked vizsla down less than 10 seconds in and the latter resorted to flying away and shooting him
Also that Mandos whole Warrior culture, Weapons and so on evolved around KILLING JEDI!
Mandalorian's are geared to fight Jedi. They use the flame thrower to make the Jedi force block the flames, they maneuver/flank the Jedi with their jetpack, disarm/tie their hands and feet with their grapple gun, and go in for the kill.
Not to mention various explosives they have.
Maul: I'll beat you without the Force AND without any fancy Mandalorian gadgets.
Fully trained Mandolorians are perfectly capable of killing Force users.
A lot of people forget that very important point about this fight.
It is also noteworthy that, because of the war between the Jedi and the Mandalorians in eons past, a lot of the weapons utilized by the Mandalorians are geared toward killing Jedi.

The only negative thing I will say is, instead of milling the slide for the optic you should have fit a set of night sights to it.

Maul was sent to combat trying where Palpatine specifically ordered him not to use the force. He doesn’t need to a augment his abilities through the force because he’s already more than a match for vizla

I've always seen it as, besides the force, they were even fighters. However, Pre let's his ego get in the way which lead to a fatal mistake
I had always drawn this conclusion with this fight. Maul not relying on the force and merely the skills he learnt with the blade while Vizsla threw everything he had at Maul. But as much as maul was a warrior he had the mind of a Sith Lord. He knew how to play to a crowd of warriors
On top of it. Maul even bested a Vong in hand to hand combat. Without using the force.

Maul is also said to always wanting to overpower his enemies to such extend, they'd know how far apart they really are, skill wise.
Just as he did with Qui Gon and Obi Wan, using the force barely and if he did, not even then for attacking.
We must also take into account that most if not all of death watch bore beskar amour, and like their own ancestors were trained to fight off Force sensitive people, Jedi and Sith alike

I wouldn’t say Maul was "nearly" defeated by Vizsla. Vizsla used his whole arsenal of weapons and only managed to disarm Maul just to be beaten by him with his bare hands. Maul didn't even needed the force to do this besides his high jump on Vizsla while es used his jetpack but this could’ve also been his mechanical legs so it’s arguable.
Mostly because mauls fighting style is mostly with sabers and that he forgot most of his force ability’s when he feel in the hole

Pre Vizla was using every tool at his disposal. Maul was using a sword.
It wasn’t fought to be practical, it was theatrical. If his only goal was to kill Pre it’d be over as quick as it started, but he was trying to gain the throne ritualistically

Simple answer: none of the others he faced were experienced Mandalorian leaders.
Mandalorians train in techniques and use equipment designed to defeat force-users. Mandalorians have challenged force-users stronger than Maul before and we know Viszla is capable of beating force-users. My take away from the fight was that Viszla was clearly the more skilled fighter and if he was 5 years younger things might have ended very differently but as the fight goes on Viszla clearly tires and slows down while Maul (fueled by the dark side) gets stronger.
Pre vizla also got a bit hasty towards the end of the fight
That dumb charge he took after disarming maul was a fatal mistake that maul took advantage of perfectly
And it shows how powerful and underrated Vizla really is. He could hold his ground against Maul for some time even he was not force sensitive.
Well if you wanna be technical maul did use the force at the very end of the fight to pick up the darksabre
Pretty much every gadget he used in the fight is made to fight Force sensitives anyways. He used everything he had, stuff made FOR THAT FIGHT, and still lost to someone who was half trying.
Also don't forget mandalorian weapons and fighting tactics are meant to deal with force users and lightsabers.

Well maul can still use the force to predict where vizla will hit and where he'll attack. So he still has a good advantage
The mandalorians pretty much built their entire arsenal around beating force users
Not surprising how maul had a bit of trouble when he fought without flinging him across the room
