Woodturning - Basket Illusion Bowl
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- In this video I turned a Bowl on the lathe. I decorated it with
a technique called basket illusion, it's a process of burning and coloring the wood. I was going to make this last week as a Memorial Day project, but the pens didn't get here till Saturday. The bowl is 11 1/2" in dia and 3" deep . I decorated it with the American flag.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.
Very nice Bowl. Reminds me of a stadium. 👍
Thank you buddy! Yes now that you say that :)
That blank was a beautiful little piece of countryside. Nice choice. 👌
Thank you Sean!
@@CarlJacobson Thank YOU. :D
Love the bowl, really like the accessory setup. 👍🇺🇸
Thank you buddy!
Great basket illusion project, My personal favorite projects. Good shop updates. The Covid19 stimulus money was good for me in the shop. Upgraded my small compressor to a 2 stage 60 gal upright one and the big Vicmark 150 chuck and a 3 1/2 hp router motor that grew legs during the move just a year ago, so I am back up to strength with my normal 2 of them. Credit to Robin for being your great partner!
Thank you very much James!! That sounds some great up-grades!! Robin's the best!!
Love that flag bowl! New setup definitely looks less janky...
Hahaha Thank you buddy!

Great looking bowl buddy, shame the pens didn't arrive in time, but hey, it still looked great and it's the thought that counts!
Cool upgrades the stuff surrounding the lathe!
Thank you buddy! Take care
Are you the nicest guy on UA-cam? Yes, I think so!
Thank you Tracy :)
His voice is adorable
:)
Nice piece of ash Carl. While I'm generally a huge fan of the basket illusion look, the bowl looks great. Great job again on the video and I like the accessory demo at the end too. I love the organization of your shop, giving me ideas on getting my space set up, in particular the magnetic bars for chuck jaws and the sand paper holder grabbed by eye this week.
Thank you so much Matt!!
Thank you! I had been planning on doing something similar with a Korean Flag and hadn't figured out a few details. Your video gave me a different way to look at it!! Wonderful tips!!!
Very cool, thank you Tim! I would love to see it when your done, jacobson68@yahoo.com
Parabéns Carl uma linda peça você é um artista.
Muito obrigado! Tenha um ótimo fim de semana!
Obrigado para você também.
Awesome Carl been watching you for a long time just something I use for burning lines in odd spots is formica from a old counter top it’s thin and it gets hot the cards just looked tough hope it helps but great as usual thanks.
Thank you very much James, and Thanks for the tip!!
i grab counter top samples at the hardware store. does the trick
Man you got way more patience and resolve than any one guy should have!
Great piece Carl.

@@CarlJacobson you're welcome carl!
Hey Robin! That was a beautiful bowl and a great tribute to the troops. Love the lathe setup Carl! - Ed
Thank you very much Ed!!
Nice project! I never tried to do that basket burning. You make it look easy.. 😬
Such an honor to be in the 5% elite group!
:) Thank you Gary!! It's time consuming but satisfying when it's done.
Me likee lots!
Thank you David!!
Nicely done Carl! I am noticing that your turning area is starting to look like a Dental Office...😂😂👍👍
hahahaha Thank you Steve!!
Wow Carl that is a nice looking piece of ASH. What is the best finish for the colors to remain stable and not bleed? I used a scrap piece Formica to burn lines some times, works good.
Thank you Ed!! The pens are waterproof, I think most finishes will work. The oil just washed out the white that's way I left it bare.
An amazing looking piece Carl ! love it.
Cheers, Bram
Thank you Bram!! Take care
Lovely bowl and rather a lot of work but what a stunning look at the end.. The black for the flag pole was the right call if you will accept a comment from a novice.... OH and of course, Hello Robin... :)
PS: This watcher is all the way from Spain. ( I'm lucky, I managed to retire here )....
Hello :)
Thank you so much John!!
Neat idea with great results, Carl. I could tell it was time consuming from the beginning. Hi to Robin from me, too. I'm still a 5%er so keep them coming. You guys stay well. Bill
Thank you very much Bill!!
I'm a new subscriber and feel I'm gonna be with you for a long time. I LOVE the bit you did at the end of the video. I've been a woodworker for about 20 years now but I've used my father's shop all that time. I've only recently built my own shop and am looking for new ideas for set up. Thanks!
That's awesome Ross!! Thank you very much!
Great bowl and Basket weave effect. Thanks for sharing.
Would like some of that 'lengthening' extractor tube - but what is it please?
Thank you Philip! Here's the link for the hose, www.woodcraft.com/products/dust-collection-hose-stay-put-4-od-x-36
@@CarlJacobson Many thanks, Carl.
Do you have a suggestion for what markers would be best to use? Love the project, nice time of your to have posted it. Thank you
Thank you Charles!! These are the best pens that I know of to use, Castell pens amzn.to/2yVlB7X
@@CarlJacobson Thank you, I need all the help I can get. I'm on my 3rd bowl attempt. The first one the grain was too nice so it ended up as just a shallow bowl. The second one the wood had defects as I got into it, so it is on the firewood pile. I've mounted the third blank, not turned it yet, fingers crossed.
Man, that turned out great. Of course they always do. You did a great job keeping all the lines even and the flag idea for Memorial day is really great. The world's gone crazy in the last few weeks, how you guys are staying safe up there.
Thank you buddy! We're doing well still hanging out at home, how are you guys doing?
@@CarlJacobson We're glad summer's here finally, just waiting for everything to get clear. Going camping next weekend so that should help, the boy's getting stir crazy.
Hi Robin !
Hello Matthew 🙂
HEY!! I'm here too ;) lol
@@CarlJacobson Hi Carl !
@@matthewmartin6745 Thanks buddy!! lol
Beautiful bowl, Carl! Thanks! And thanks for showing your setup. What is the piece that extends for dust collection? Oh, Hi Robin!
Thank you Garry!! I can't seem to find a video explaining it very well. I'm thinking I need to put one together! :)
Hi Garry :)

Great bowl and other ideas Carl. Aren't the copy fingers supposed to be articulated to allow for different widths of spindle?
Thank you!! Yes they can be articulated or you can just cut several different sizes.
What was the beading tool you used? Thanks
Hi Randy, it's a D-Way beading tool d-waytools.com/
it did look ugly #TEAMROBIN!! however, Awesome Bowl Carl
hahahaha I know I know!! Thanks buddy!! #teamrobin!!
It definitely needed an upgrade! ❤️
I've tried using playing cards to burn lines in grooves in my turnings but I haven't had much luck using them! Do you have any tips to get them to work?
I always double them up and use two at a time. Also turn the lathe speed up to at least 1,500
@@CarlJacobson ok thanks for the tip!
Shades of David Nitmann
In my mind, I turn like Carl but in reality, I just make shavings.
Hahaha...Thank you man!
Regarding the shot at 2:11, I trust your wife has excellent protection for herself and the camera! Gosh!
Yes Erin and thank you 😊
She's well protected and amazing with the camera :)

Don’t like these types of videos, music, and no talking. I’ve almost just quit even clicking on your videos.
Barry Fields do you need some help? What’s with the negativity? Here to chat if you need!
I'm confused, I talked for half this video. My advice would be stop doing something you don't enjoy. We like making these types of videos, and we're going to continue until we DON'T enjoy it! There's always another option..... the mute button.
hahahaha Thanks Martin!!
Carl Jacobson well I didn’t actually watch the whole video. I skipped ahead 4-5 times and there was music playing every time, so I gave up. Sorry!
Barry Fields you realize that if you talk while turning you get a mouthful of sawdust right? 🤣
It’s also noisy with the dust collection on. I for one, like the music during the creative process (where it would be hard to have a conversation anyway) with breaks to explain specifics, and having the more in-depth chat at the end. I still feel like you’ve got some pent up anger about something, otherwise why wouldn’t you just stop clicking? Why post about it?
