Here is an interesting tip - if you expect fight with subs > go to pd > deploy ecm to check for any air > if ecm is present - drop it back down and procced as if there is enemy surface fleet there ||| no ecm? > deploy radar - all surface contacts cleared, now you can focus on underwater biologic and/or subs. I personally like to do that.
Basically the best way to do things, I started to do that when I got sick of mixing up Romeos with merchants/trawlers on the 1984 campaign, saves alot of time too
Can be a bit problematic if there are air assets. Maybe I've just had bad luck, but it seems like any time I pop my ECM mast with an aircraft in play, it's not long before the depth bombs and torpedoes are raining down.
That poor whale. Honestly from what I understand, it might have been a mercy at that point; whales and other marine mammals are sensitive to active sonar, particularly mid-frequency sonar, and have been documented swimming extremely long distances or even beaching themselves to escape it. Some of those beached were bleeding from their eyes and ears when they were found. There's also some evidence to suggest that the stress of exposure has led some whales to suffer from decompression sickness due to rapid depth changes made to get away from the noise - it was previously thought they might be immune to it. And those are just the impacts that we can actively observe and measure. Regardless, it's likely very traumatic for them. There have been calls from environmental activists and the like to limit large-scale sonar testing or naval training exercises to areas whales don't frequent, but I don't think anything's come of that yet.

The torpedoes in cold waters won't pick up the target until it is within the horizontal line in the box. For this reason its advantageous to not make them go active until after the subs are within that area so they don't have time to evade.
This entire time i thought he was saying tota ray or something like that. I had no idea what the purpose of the long wire trailing behind the sub was for. I finally figured out it is a towed array and was able to look some information about what it does. It's been driving me crazy ever since i started watching these videos lol
I like what you did there. Close head on engagement like that with the Song and two torps fired at you the best strategy is to increase speed to full and get behind those torps before they even go active.
I'm pretty conceited. Whenever you mention Guam, I swell with pride. Spent three and s half years of my life there serving with HSC-25. Carry on and win this bloody war. Remember the whale!

I love the cold waters content. I asked what happens when a torp hits a whale in the first cold waters vid i watched on your channel and i have got to say I'm kinda disappointed the devs didn't at least include an explosion and then a red mist cloud in the water when it strikes.
There is an explosion, if Wolf had put the camera on the torpedo instead we would've seen it. It cut back to the submarine because the contact was lost. No red mist though because what kind of sick bastard wants to see that?
This hasn't happened to me before so I was wondering how the game models torpedoes hitting whales. I guess they just don't, and that's good. If it was something gory or bloody then it would be awful
Awesome video! I'm glad the game does not hold enemy kills against you, though I imagine Captain Allen is going to have answer questions about this later. I recommend using your torpedoes on the escorts before using missiles on the landing ships, They are harder to evade and sneakier than the missiles.
The torp was spoofed by the sub because it was set to passive search. That's fine vs a surface ship, but against a diesel-electric sub, active search is better (I don't mean the active range; rather, what i mean is you can set the torpedo to use its own sonar to find a target, a lot more reliable than using passive systems)
Aaron from subbrief (formarly known as Jiveturkey) made a drinking game from war atrosities like killing civilians and whales, you got blasted especially on the 2000's campaign
Great episode. I've seen enemy torpedoes go stray a few times, but rarely against merchants, and never against a whale. I did have a recent mission in a Sturgeon against a Russian surface group including a Kiev. Its tricky, as you only have 2 wires. I had a torpedo acquire a Krivak which then exploded for no apparent reason. Later an Udaloy suddenly dropped speed, and the 3D view showed a gaping hole in the bow, so it evidently also was a victim of red-on-red fire. About your loadout though: I find the TASMs to not be that useful, as their minimum range makes them difficult to use, and they don't seem any more resistant to chaff and point defenses that the Harpoon. And for TLAMs, either carry 8, or zero. All the land attack missions require 8, so if you have 6, you still have to return to Guam to reload, and you'll have plenty of time to complete the mission even if you have to reload all 8. I prefer to carry zero, so I can carry 8 moss, 12 Harpoon, and 28 Mk48s, making for a good long patrol
Tragic as the unnecessary deaths, especially cetacean deaths, are, we must keep in mind that any weapon that hits something other than OWNSHIP is a weapon that cannot hit OWNSHIP.
