Leon - You cost me money today, after watching your video I pulled the trigger on the FF-1Y. I don't generally like digital delays, but this one has features that make it more Analog like in that you have a 3-band of EQ. So, you can turn the treble down and boost the Mids. Plus, all those other features. Thanks for the tips and great video!
Hello Leon, I seen this pedal being used on a players live board on UA-cam. It looked Kool. So I did a UA-cam search about it. To my joy, you reviewed/demoed . IMO you are the best to demo everything guitar related. What a great pedal, will one day need to get one. Cheers!
I listened to you playing through this pedal again and you (and it) sound very good. The repeats and modulation have a thickness and liquid quality in texture that really is the thing that separates the best sounding of the dual digital delay pedals. I'm thinking that it's time for a shootout of stereo/dual digital delay pedals, now that there are quite a few very strong contenders. The List: 1. Strymon DIG 2. Free The Tone Future Factory 3. Korg SDD-3000 4. Boss SDE-3000 5. Eventide H90 (Vintage Digital algorithm) 6. Keeley Halo
Hi Leon! Thanks Free the Tone! Great piece of gear, Lovely with the Strat! I'd definitely try this on vocals, Bass and Drums as well as Keyboards ! Thanks for sharing brother and Be Well All!
To wax ‘analog snob’ I have a well regarded analog delay (Suhr Discovery) and a few others. The pleasure I get from this relative to those - it’s no contest. I love this one so much.
Interested in your thoughts on the Discovery. It looks awesome, but at least here in the UK, it looks hugely overpriced at £650. I have a Halo, Timeline, Belle Epoch Deluxe and now the Future Factory. The BED is the least fiddly but so far I’m enjoying the FF, though I can’t programme Delay A for some reason, probably due to a setting I’ve messed up! But that Suhr sure (sorry) sounds sweet in the reviews…
Nice review Leon, this pedal is the top pedal on my list of next pedals, I love everything about this, the design, tones you can create, functionality and controls of so many parameters all visual without diving into internal pages on a screen, for me it’s user friendly and what I really like and enjoy when programming any studio or guitar gear. I’m gonna have to take the plunge very soon and invest in one as soon as my wallet allows it. A quality piece of kit.
Is this going to get in the way of that PRS I sent you pics of??? This Delay and the Eventide Tricerachorus and I could probably put the covers on my Rack gear!! signed PRS Silverburst Guardian!!
I have one of those! Most awesome delay, I have the mono version as well and it's spectacualr as well. Give the TriAvatar a try too if you like tri chorus, it has been a great replacement for my noisy Dyno-My-Piano.
Loved the new toy ! So good , I ordered one. I noticed you did not save any presets ? Not an issue , just was curious . I guess you just push the save button and it save's .....ok. Nice demo
No wonder this is That Pedal Shows favourite. The modulation is so beautiful. It also doesn't sound like something I expected it to sound like from the delay modulation world. Yet still familiar to classics.
I think That Pedal Show feature their other delay, the Flight Time 2 (FT2) a bit more often. Might be wrong. I know I’ve seen the FT2 on Micks pedalboard quite a few times. Didn’t realise he also used this one! I have the FT2 on my board now. I love it. I wouldn’t use the extra features this one has. :)
How so? What does it do this doesn't? As far as sound, I haven't heard anyone play them side-by-side and come to the conclusion that the FT sounds better.
Wow! This is basically a 2290 in a pedal! It sounds good and I must say that so far Free The Tone makes the best looking pedals. They sound good as well but I'd be the kind of guy to walk into a store and buy it without trying it just for what it looks like. Great playing as always!
It is basically a pedal replacement for the 2290 I sold a few years back and it does not disappoint. Best part is that it is no where near as noisy as the old TC unit.
@@ExpatZ266 I've really wanted a 2290 for a while. What is missing in this pedal? Also.. silly question, but If I want that noisy "mojo" from the TC is there another pedal I could put pre or post?
I thought I had transported back to the 80s, with the pinch harmonics, the hair and the distortion.... Seriously though, good review. Just going to buy one now.
Great demo! I LOVE my Tri Chorus… I assume you can also run this in Mono as well and get nice slap delay too? (I like to get that spanking’ Robben Ford thing). Obviously this does pan and long delays with chorus and modulation in spades…
Nice overview and great playing as usual. I'm actually a little overwhelmed by all the options this thing has. I'm keeping my fingers crossed they send you a Tri-Avatar chorus as well. Would be nice to hear your thoughts as to how it compares to the new Eventide TriceraChorus.
I have an H9 and the Tri Avatar, absolutely love them both but for the Dyno My Piano kinbd of sound the Triavatar nails it dead where the TriceraChorus has that unmistakeable Eventide sound. Which I abolutely adore as well. In moderation or you will definitely sound like every 80's studio musician who ever made any money at it. Which if you think about regardless of whether we as guitarists think it's dated and stale still kind of says something for the use of chorus doesnt it?
Sounds very nice indeed. I was looking for a used DD20 or a SE70 to use with guitars and synths, now this is a very cool pedal but it's on another budget
Nice review. This pedal has been out a while. Do you know if they may be updating this pedal. There is quite abit of space to have a bigger screen l. Love the flexibility and sound of this deal. Good demo. Take care
Amazing review Leon! Can I ask you something? I'm using FF-1Y and AS-1R, and wanna make it stereo. As I have Victory V4 Kraken Amp pedal, so I'm gonna place my delay/reverb after the amp pedal and go to mixer directly with Walrus Audio Canvas Stereo. In this Situation, should I adjust my Free the Tone pedal's input level switch to "line level"? By the way, I'm gonna connect this pedals with XLR-TS cable(Kraken Cab sim -> FF-1Y) and TS cables(FF-1Y -> AS-1R -> Canvas). I'm not sure this is a right way :( could you give me some advice for this?
Any chance you still have this pedal and the DIG? Would love to see a comparison video.... Love the functionality of FF but can it replicate the DIG ADM with heavy Mod?
I still had the Dig when I had this on loan. Since the Dig just has switches for low/deep you'd need to spend some time dialing them in side by side if you really wanted to replicate your favourite tone. Part of the appeal of the Dig is that "just plug and go" while the FF is more a tweakers dream.
Awesome, is it possible to get that type of panning fx on the fractal delays? i have the TC hardware/software plugin and i like the delays but would like to be able to do the same in real time (either a pedal like this on on my FM3). Thanks.
Makes it sound huge….if you are listening in mono, you won’t hear a delay,as the reversed phase will cancel the other out…..but in stereo, and in the room,it sounds like the delays are all around you…
If you just want one main delay flavour, the FF will cover the "lush/hifi" flavour while a Volante will cop the "warm/lofi" thing. Timeline if you need something with a bunch of flavours.
Hey Leon. Thanks for the demo, I think you just sold me this pedal. Quick question: do you think it can be used in place of a chorus? I’m running out of space on my board and I’m not sure if I need a dedicated chorus. We have very similar play style. Thanks
@@LeonTodd Hey Leon it's me again. I got this pedal now and I wanna say, it's probably the best delay I've ever tried. Do you happen to know how to do a factory reset on it? It's not mentioned anywhere on the manual. Thanks
Another great video. You seem to know a lot about effects. Did you take engineering courses I’m trying to learn more about effects and how to tweak the settings. Any tips or books you could recommend will be helpful thanks
I studied maths and physics at university so I'm always curious about how stuff works. Most of what i know about effects I learnt by playing around with them, reading manuals and combing through forums.
Sounds amazing. Given what it is, Boss DD20 still stands strong today! This pedal looks mighty though. Sounds very musical. Love the beats per minute. Always helpful to have dome visual feedback designating time increments along with the tactile knobs.
Knobs vs Buttons! I feel like the DiG will hit the spot if you just want to twist knobs and go, whereas I'd recommend this for people who really want to fine tune their delay tone and experiment with textures.
Looking at this pedal heavily, after watching your video it looks like this can do chorus as well pretty nicely? Right now I have an analogman chorus, but would be cool if I could have one pedal doing both for more board space. Trying to achieve a tone very similar to this ua-cam.com/video/oENqKhPUJRo/v-deo.html
The Church are awesome. You should be able to get subtle chorus out of this, it's going to require a little more fine tuning than something like the analogman. Advantage is you can just save it as a preset when you do get it dialled in.
@@LeonTodd side question for you. I’ve just been using chorus and reverb for this sound, and just started dialing in delay. It seems like the reverb kills a lot of the chime, I could probably get away with just using chorus and delay(dialed in correctly)?

I'd like to see a shootout between FtT vs UAD reverb and delay pedals. UADs have far fewer options but are supposed to sound amazing.
I'd really like to try the UAD stuff - the demos I've heard sound great so I'd be curious to see how it works with my setup.
Circular delay in series mode..?
This or DD-500?
I'm using both... The pairing of the FF with the goodies of the DD-500 opens up unlimitted possibilities...
Very lush. On a side note: I have no problem with menu diving.
Nice demo Leon! Could anyone chime in on if you can tap tempo while the effect is off? Ty
Great job! When you were running in series and added some chorus , is the effect added only on the repeats or on your mix
Depends on where you apply it - since the delays are cascaded you can choose which one you use for chorusing
