Been shooting a 280 rem Ruger since 1983....deadly round. AI has a litle more so it is a winner in my book. I went with the 280 rem over the 7mm mag because it was lighter and kicks less. Ackley just made it a little better for the longer range stuff. Great round. 280 rem still ain't no whimp and deserves more accolades than it has received.
way before nosler officaly brought 280ai , it was a wildcat cartage. we had to fire form the brass from 7mm express, or later 280 rem. to make 280ai brass. Parker ackley built me a 280ai barreled action and custom dies. I carved out a French walnut plank, and inletted the action, and glass bedded the beautiful FN supreme action that Parker ackley chambered in 280ai. the rifle was a pleasure to shoot and extremely accurate. took many head of game with that rifle. when I came back from Viet nam some one stole that rifle, it's still on stolen list. I replaced it with one of the first Kimber rifles in 280ai nice rifle, but not an original custom Parker ackley rifle! life it good!

It may a cartridge you want to handload. Not sure how available ammo will be.

Great vid. You summarized this cartridge correctly. Well done. It still amazes me that some folks are not familiar with the.280 A.I. Parker Otto Ackley knew how to exhume efficiency out of every cartridge.
Remington brought out the 7mm express Remington many years ago which was the 30-06 necked to 7mm. I think it was to compete with Winchester's 270 cartridge. It didnt sell well so they renamed it the 280 Remington. The 280 AI like you said is the 280 Remington that has an improved case. There's a whole family of Ackley improved cartridges. Did you know that the .277 diameter bullet for the 270 winchester is a more true 7mm than the .284 diameter bullet is. One 7mm I had you don't see anymore is the 7mm stw or shooting times Westerner . I would get awesome velocities from just a 24 inch barrel. A simple rechambering of a 7mm rem mag rifle was all it took to have a rifle in it. The 7mm stw was just an 8mm rem mag necked to 7mm. There's a cartridge to check out, the 8mm rem mag. My uncle used one all the time. Thanks for the video.😊 Enjoy the channel.😊
When I decided to enter the .284" diameter I thought about 280AI and 7-08 but went with the 28 Nosler. It drives a 162gr. ELD-X 3175FPS and smacks very, very hard. I think the .284" is the sweet spot for all hunting applications in North America.
Fun fact .280AI brass is fire formed meaning you have to fire a .280 rem in a .280AI barrel which reshapes the brass from 30 degrees shoulder to 40 degrees shoulder
The 280AI is a cartridge on its own. You don't have to fireform the 280 Rem. You can buy 280 AI ammo. The AI chamber is cut so you can fire 280 Rem without issues. The 280 AI chamber has the 40* shoulder, it also has less body taper.
The 280AI is an excellent old cartridge with performance that (with proper handloads) puts it nipping at the heals of the 7mm Mag with less recoil + it tends to be very accurate. When this cartridge its combined with a fast twist rate and a long throat (& mag well to accommodate the long loaded round) it will shoot the longer 175gr + bullets and the very long ELD bullets exceptionally well at very long range
.280AI is very efficient, low recoil, impressive ballistics, and very versatile. Handloading brings the best out of its potential. I own 2 rifles chambered in this great cartridge.
7mm bullet from 160gr to 195Gr for ling range is king! Have a 30-inch barrel with a 1:7 twist for the 180's and 190's long pills. Kicks butt over the 6mm and 6.5mm
280ai is my all time favorite. I was using it long before it was a standard cartridge. I find it shines with the 140 bullet. Hits like a 7 mag recoils like a 270.
Little crow works proved it. I personally shoot a 195 in my 7 mag over 3000fps. A 280 ai can’t come close to a proper loaded 7 mag. I would own a 280 AI though before I touched a 7 PRC.
@@JD.307 195 is what I did. They don’t use Berger’s. 26” barrel and super slow powder. The point is made with little crow works is comparing all the same barrel length and saami chambers with 8 twist barrels. 7 mag beats 280 AI by a lot. That said 280 AI is a great cartridge and ticks the box for 600 yard hunting.
Since you are reloading now, you can buy 280 Remington ammo, shoot it through your rifle in order to fire form the brass (give it that awesome shoulder) and away you go. Great video. Looking forward for the rest of the videos on this setup.
This was a really fun video . 😂 I have looked at this one ( caliber) for a while and thought it was probably the ultimate hunting/ shooting round only drawback is bullet availability. I still love the fact it is easier on the recoil end . Great video can’t wait to see more . Thanks Adam
He has improved more chambers than I can name off. Changing the degrees of the shoulder for better performance and brass life. Would like an AI chambering but not sure which one i would get.
Can’t wait to see the videos on this !! I’ve been really interested in those 307 models & very interested in the 280AI ! Looking forward to see how this performs for you
Love the 280 AI. I’m a 7mm junkie, but never have owned a 280AI. I’ve always just went with the 7rem mag, because of ammo is everywhere. Did not know about the new Weatherby. Looks great and packed with features. Arca rail wow. Looking forward for your full review
On paper the 7 mm AI is more efficient than the 7 mm mag, nearly matching its ballistics with a bit less recoil. But the 7 mm mag ammo is much more widely available and it has the reputation as the premier long range elk cartridge.
With some loads the 280 AI can exceed the 7 mm Mag. The 280 Rem is often within 150 fps with some loads. If reloaded up to proper pressure it cuts that margin in half. Another thing with most rifles the mag hold 3 or 4, the 280 and AI hold 5. The ex5a round may not mean much but it's there.
@@leonhart2452 the only way the 7 mm AI can exceed the 7 mm mag is with higher pressure. The 7 mm mag is already at high pressure so it's on you if you want to increase the 7 mm AI pressure over the recommended numbers. Probably a bad idea for a little bit more velocity.
I am extremely glad You delve into this particular cartridge and as I've yet to see a honest review of this cartridge and the claims made about this cartridge and very interested to see if Your experiences mirrors mine as I know You tell it like it is and greatly appreciate all Your videos so us folks don't throw good money into the wrong direction.
Good choice everyone who has a 280AI loves it great long range slinger and hits like 7mm mag less powder close ballistic what's not to like good luck think you will luv it
The .280AI is an amazing chambering. Handloading you can get substantial boogy out of that, it is very efficient, and like most AI cases punches way above its own weight class. I’d love to own and hunt with a .280AI.
280AI is what I guess when you showed it I built one last winter using a old 721 Remington model B meaning it had a fancy checker stock from the factory I built it using a Shilens barrel 26 inch 1-8 twist
Adam if the barrel twist is 1:8 or better then you cannot the heavy for caliber bullets in your 280 AI. I prefer the 168 Berger Hunting VLD Retumbo powder Nosler brass CCI BR2 primer with the bullet seated out as far as the magazine would feed correctly! Deadly combo!
Wow, I was going to say .280 Ackley as soon as I saw the cartridge. Nice one mate. I've never had one either but heard about them since about the mid 2000's.
Way up there on the cool level. Easy cartridge to shoot with lots of thump. Handloaders dream now that brass is easy to get, and even Weatherby is selling brass for it.
Yeah Jim on backfire was raving about this cartridge for a long time . Just it being a little bit older cartridge watch your twist rates as it will not stabilize some of the newer longer boolights brother.. kind of like how I learned the hard way running the new bullets on an old 22-250... Too slow😢.. that's what's awesome about all the newer calibers.. better twist rates to stabilize our newer bullets..
Super stoked about this video series! Just picked up the model 307 alpine ct in 280 AI about a month ago and topped it off with a burris veracity ph cant wait to see what you come up with load development wise.
I doubt that cartridge will ever get any large number of companies making the ammo just because of the 7mm PRC. Not saying there is anything wrong with any cartridge. I have many rifles and like them all. The 7mm PRC had a great kick start and many people have them already and these two cartridges are very much alike. Looking forward to seeing your future videos on this cartridge. Looks like you purchased this rifle to keep. I am sure it will be a fine rifle.
I have both the 280AI and 7prc. Both like the brand new Barnes factory loads. 280AI 22” barrel with the new 152gr lrx gives 2945fps. The 22” barrel 7prc with the new Barnes factory 160lrx runs 2977fps. The 7 PRC gives a little more reach and punch with 0.608 bc on that new 160lrx. It takes another 10gr of powder and quite a bit more recoil to get that added velocity. That 280AI is so efficient! 280 AI performed fantastic on a couple of black bears as did the the 7PRC on this year’s bear. One shot kills with both guns. Debating which to take on my elk hunt next week. So many good choices to pick from! 🤔
Can't wait to see testing with this. have mk V backcountry in 280 ai. I can't believe how light it is. It's got a brake, but it does give a little bump when you touch one off. But it's a joy to carry.
man, are you in for a treat. I bought a LH Savage Timberline in 280 AI a couple years ago. IMR 4831 and 175 gr Partitions at 2740 fps. Unfortunately, owing to our recent trip to Limpopo and my wife's new-found desire to hunt some PG, "my" 280AI is now "her" 280AI. Nice thing about that Savage is the AccuFit. I can shorten it and lower the comb to fit her now. Very, very mild on the recoil, down around the same recoil as my T3X in 6.5x55. How lucky am I that my wife is also a LH shooter.
Adam , Good choice . I have 280 Remington. And really love it. I bought a used 20 gauge pump today and had it in the field 2 hours after I came home . I didn't get any shots so when I got back to the house.i gave it a oil treatment..I'm taking it out Duck hunting in a few hours. Get out and shoot that rifle.
280 Remington used to be called the 7mm express, a caliber that's been around for a while. It never became popular till they changed the name to 280 rem. Then somebody had to "improve" that! The 280 AI is a great round, derived from the 30-06 case.
Seen one at an LGS a few years back that had a VX-6 scope mounted on it, wanted it so bad, but had to pass it up because then there was no ammo or reloading supplies available for it.
Nice round and really nice rifle. Because of ammo availability while on a trip would make me lean more toward the 280 or 7mm Mag. If I were a reloaded I would try the AI. I hope it shoots awesome for you.
I just bought a weatherby mark v live wild edition in 28 nosler and topped it with a leupold mk5 HD 3-15×44 with the fire dot reticle. Can't wait to see what that gun can do.
Yeah dude. 280 Ackley has been around since at least the early 70s I am pretty sure. and it is AWESOME!!! I call it my daddy's round, ecause I am 47 years old and don't ever remember him not having one. He has a custom rifle built on a Husqvarna action that is absolutely amazing.
I've always wanted to play with a .22 Jet for some reason. It was pretty cool in it's day. The rounds were also $0.25 each in 1960, so unfortunately they will probably be $25 each now. Might just be a .357 case with a full taper though, I'm not sure.
That is going to be a Sweat Heart of a Rifle. 280 A.I. is what I want for my youngest son. I have hunted with a 280 Remington in a Mauser 98k action she was the very 1st Rifle as an adult I purchased.
There are many, many cartridges/calibers I do not own, nor care to own.... Anything I could ever wish to do with a firearm, I have it covered... I have my ,22 shorts, longs and long rifles, my .223/5.56s, my .7-30 Waters, my .30-06, my 9mms, my .357s, my .44s, my 20 ga and 12 ga shot guns.... and my little black powder group of guns going on.... firearms are just cool...
The .280 Rem. was once known as 7mm Express by Remington. They changed the name because bozos years ago were putting them in the 7mm Rem. Mag. and having "oopsies". Then the .280 A.I. came to be nips at the heels of the 7mm Rem. Mag., thus more efficient. Then you have the .30-06 A.I. which nips the heels of the .300 Win. Mag., etc. etc. .

For a short time Remington renamed the 280 Rem the 7mm Express, but didn't catch on and reverted back to old name.
I own a 7mm express. Beautiful gun.
They also called it the 7 mm 06. Only a year or two. So finding any with such a head stamp may be hard to find.
.280ai is the perfect non magnum hunting cartridge! I am strongly considering getting rid of my 7mm prc and switching back to the .280ai
I'm stuck between these two cartridges for my next rifle.
Little crow works proved it. I personally shoot a 195 in my 7 mag over 3000fps. A 280 ai can’t come close to a proper loaded 7 mag. I would own a 280 AI though before I touched a 7 PRC.
How much longer and higher pressure than SAAMI spec is that load? Seems spicy...
@@JD.307 I use a saami chamber and little crow works used saami chambers. My bolt opens easy. My personal coal is 3.5”
@@SpudOutdoors Yeah, I saw they got over 3000 with 160s, didn't see where they did it with 195s like you are saying.
@@SpudOutdoors Glad you didn't blow up your gun 👍
Since you are reloading now, you can buy 280 Remington ammo, shoot it through your rifle in order to fire form the brass (give it that awesome shoulder) and away you go. Great video. Looking forward for the rest of the videos on this setup.
This was a really fun video . 😂 I have looked at this one ( caliber) for a while and thought it was probably the ultimate hunting/ shooting round only drawback is bullet availability. I still love the fact it is easier on the recoil end . Great video can’t wait to see more . Thanks Adam
Thanks for watching Sonny!
Mr. P O Ackley knew his stuff for sure.
He has improved more chambers than I can name off. Changing the degrees of the shoulder for better performance and brass life. Would like an AI chambering but not sure which one i would get.
Can’t wait to see the videos on this !! I’ve been really interested in those 307 models & very interested in the 280AI ! Looking forward to see how this performs for you
Coming soon!
Love the 280 AI. I’m a 7mm junkie, but never have owned a 280AI. I’ve always just went with the 7rem mag, because of ammo is everywhere. Did not know about the new Weatherby. Looks great and packed with features. Arca rail wow. Looking forward for your full review
Who Tee, you know I'm a .30-06 man but if you go on a western elk hunt this year. Take that 280AI
Would be a good pick
@@WHOTEEWHO yesser it would
On paper the 7 mm AI is more efficient than the 7 mm mag, nearly matching its ballistics with a bit less recoil. But the 7 mm mag ammo is much more widely available and it has the reputation as the premier long range elk cartridge.
True
More soon
I bet the marketing and PR guys at Weatherby are loving that it came straight out of the box with what appears to be a stock blemish.
Zoom in at 8:15. Perhaps a couple. Below the bolt and below the cheek.
Thumbs up here for interest. Always wanted one but just can't justify it no matter how great it is and that's a nice set-up you have there.
I saw the sharp shoulder and no belt on the case, knew it was a 280ai. Stellar cartridge
I'm surprised you haven't gotten a 280AI before. Excited to see 280AI content
I still gotta load the 257 hammers!
I prefer the 168 Berger Hunting VLD
Retumbo powder Nosler brass CCI BR2 primer with the bullet seated out as far as the magazine would feed correctly! Deadly combo!
Wow, I was going to say .280 Ackley as soon as I saw the cartridge. Nice one mate.
I've never had one either but heard about them since about the mid 2000's.
I have a 284 WM. Very respectable round. I do have to be very careful reloading the brass. That 40 degree shoulder will crumple real easy.
Edit 264WM not 284 that was my typo.
Nice rifle that's a cracking cartridge Adam looking forward to seeing more on it 👍
Welcome to the club Whoteewho
Its a 30-06 necked down blowen out and sharpened shoulder.
Can't wait for future videos on the 280AI. I've heard Eric Cortina talk about how great it is, so it's gotta be a good one
Coming soon!
Super stoked about this video series! Just picked up the model 307 alpine ct in 280 AI about a month ago and topped it off with a burris veracity ph cant wait to see what you come up with load development wise.
Awesome!!!
I have a 280 Ackley improved in the Kimber mountain ascent love that rifle. It’s a hell of a tech driver.
I have been wanting a 280ai for a while now, seems like a cool cartridge.
Can't wait to see testing with this. have mk V backcountry in 280 ai. I can't believe how light it is. It's got a brake, but it does give a little bump when you touch one off. But it's a joy to carry.
Living the dream. Thanks for all your videos
Thanks for watching!
Please get the Federal 155gn Terminal Accent rounds. I think they are the best hunting round for the 280ai.
man, are you in for a treat.
Awesome!
Can't wait to see the accuracy of it .
I love mine! I load 145 grain Speer hot core in it for deer!! Great rifle!!
Good to hear
I bought a 280AI in a Weatherby Mark V Live Wild edition a couple of months ago and it is an awesome shooter .
Good to hear
Youll love that 280 ai cartridge. Hits like the 7mm mag on the bullet end and kicks like a 308
Adam , Good choice .
Great show and thanks again for the info but I love the 300mag vanguard 💪💪👏👏👏👍👍👍😁
Thanks for watching
Kimber Hunter. 280AI. Here. Excellent cartridge ad rifle. Light weight and good precision.
Awesome
Awesome my uncle built my father a .257 roberts that was ackley improved. It is a darn good shooter.
280 A.I. is a Ron Spomer pet cartridge... just a .284 in 06 case with 40* shoulder 👍 should be good for just about anything 👌
280 Remington used to be called the 7mm express, a caliber that's been around for a while. It never became popular till they changed the name to 280 rem. Then somebody had to "improve" that! The 280 AI is a great round, derived from the 30-06 case.
Ron Spomer and Joseph VonBenedikt definitely approve this cartridge choice for sure. 🤠
You mentioned a 6.5 Creedmoor and the 6.5 PRC can’t forget about the 6.5 Grindel and my next rifle in the 6.5 is going to be the 6.5 300 Weatherby
Looking forward to performance videos! Definitely take it out hunting!
You know I am a big 280 fan I think about doing my H&R in to & A I . You will love the 280 .
I have a hush vanguard with the grey and black "marbled" stock. 300wby. Fantastic rifles
Seen one at an LGS a few years back that had a VX-6 scope mounted on it, wanted it so bad, but had to pass it up because then there was no ammo or reloading supplies available for it.
The exact setup I would have ordered to.
Kenny Jarrett used to chamber a lot of His Beanfield rifles for this. Great cartridge!!!!!
I've got a 35 Whelen and several rifles in 30-06. I'm definitely fighting it, but I know .280ai is just a matter of time for me.
Nice round and really nice rifle. Because of ammo availability while on a trip would make me lean more toward the 280 or 7mm Mag. If I were a reloaded I would try the AI. I hope it shoots awesome for you.
I'm going to stay tuned to this one.
Got a 280AI prefit 700 carbon six 24” 1-8 twist with the right powders it can be impressive. RL26,H4831sc,RL19 are a few with 150-168gr bullets
💪💪
Mrs W-T-W is thinkin' you better be building out to make a bigger gun room. 😂
🤣🤣🤣 she wants the animal mounts out the house
I've always wanted to play with a .22 Jet for some reason. It was pretty cool in it's day. The rounds were also $0.25 each in 1960, so unfortunately they will probably be $25 each now. Might just be a .357 case with a full taper though, I'm not sure.
The more I see the 280 ai, the more I like it.
That’s just flipping great. I promised mamma I wouldn’t buy another gun until next tax return. Way to go. You just made a liar out of me!!
😁🇺🇸👍
🤣🤣🤣
The .280 Rem. was once known as 7mm Express by Remington. They changed the name because bozos years ago were putting them in the 7mm Rem. Mag. and having "oopsies". Then the .280 A.I. came to be nips at the heels of the 7mm Rem. Mag., thus more efficient. Then you have the .30-06 A.I. which nips the heels of the .300 Win. Mag., etc. etc. .
