... I think Rossi has pulled up their socks in regards to quality control and customer service from the "not so good ole days" ... the new Rossi rifles I checked are pretty well built ... they've also pulled up their MSRPs alot
Compare those lot numbers on those two boxes. If in fact the bad ones are different, call Federal with the information. They might need to have a recall! They might reimburse you for your trouble.
I found out with a Taurus I had, a half decent bore scope ( around $100 paid for mine) will show you many things. Made it easy for me to find a pit in the chamber that caused the brass to expand out into it, ruining brass and causing spent rounds to stick. The bore scope also exposed a crack in the chamber of the replacement barrel I bought from Taurus. Plus its also cool to look down the barrels of my firearms, and Ive even used it on my cars too.
I wish NEF would bring back the Handi Rifle. Damn things were ACCURATE! A friend of mine won a 1000 yard match with one cha.bered in .30-06, just, we'll, because he could!
What I like most about your channel and content is that it is simple down to earth content that is (A) simple and to the point (B) your videos are always done that is easy for everyone to understand and comprehend. GOOD Video!!!!
Well done Who-tee! Glad you figured out the Rossi issue. I just bought the CVA single shot in 45-70 and I've been impressed so far. Glad Rossi picked up the torch as well. A single makes a nice light truck gun.
It was either overpressure loads or just a bad lot of brass from federal. I figure the brass is really thin for starters. Brass can be hard or soft or thick or thin which determines if brass may split when shot. Contact federal and let them know lot number so they can determine if a recall may be necessary. I'm sure there are more boxes out there or may just be one box but I doubt it thanks for the video😊
@@Kapt.KrunchThanks. yeah I wasn't real sure on that. I think the 350 legend case is a little bigger in diameter with a slightly rebated rim correct so it can be used with a standard AR-15 bolt. The length of the 2 cases is different too. Is that right.👍
👍 Rossi stood up for ya! Dang ammo. I now need SCOPE eye glasses! I do have some fond memories w/ my Pops & iron sites. Back in the day we use to slay KY white tail with nothing else but old Marlin 3030, iron sites and a thermos of coffee. Magnolia KY was good to us. (RIP Dad🙏)
I’m glad to see Rossi sent you a new rifle. I have a R95 in 444 marlin. I bought it because the action, trigger pull, fit and finish looked great. I wish the barrel was threaded, but I’ll get that done after hunting season.
Any idea off hand what it costs to have a barrel threaded? I need to get one of my .308Win rifles threaded but I'm not sure if it's worth spending the money
@@dr.benjaminbennettth.d.7304 $150-$200 is what I typically expect. Talk to your gunsmith a good bit before you do it. It will change the way the gun shoots. It's arguable that you are far better off in the long run to simply have it rebarreled with a good quality barrel already threaded, especially if you have a gun which shoots really well. I've had a few done, first one I saw no real difference and didn't change my groups at all, 0.5" with handloads all day. The second rifle I had done opened up from 0.35" to 0.9". Same gun smith. Now I just buy a barrel and have it installed and head spaced. No issues. If there are I can go back to the old barrel and take the issue up with the barrel manufacturer.
On a box of Federal rifle ammunition, the lot number is usually printed on the side of the box, near the bottom; it will be clearly labeled as "Lot No." or a similar designation. Oh by the way Hornady has a recall on 350 legend for 16 lots of overpressure rounds. Federal may have the same issue now. Please contact them. Take care😊
They are out there but ammo availability is pathetic. You get the choice of 1 manufactur and 2 different loads. I won't buy one until 4-5 different manufacturers and loads are available.
I had that happen in a Remington 700 in 7mm mag. It turned out to have a slightly oblong, instead of perfectly round chamber. Remington also sent me a brand new rifle. But, after the replacement rifle, it didn't happen with the same ammo, so this sounds like the ammo
I have seen ammo do weird stuff. I told you about my ultra reliable glock 23 that suddenly became a jam o matic with one box of ammo. No issues before or since. Federal ammo is usually pretty good, but every company sells a bad batch every once in a while.
I had 1,000 round case of .223 Rem a few years back that did the same thing. To make sure it was the ammo I shot it in my AR-15, then two different bolt action. Every case split and like you I reload and wanted the once fired brass. Culprit was the brass wasn’t annealed properly. Things happen in mass production from time to time.
I never had any boxed ammo ever do such a thing. I did have some bad Winchester 44mag I was firing out of my lever action rifle that was cratering the primers. IT was loaded too hot. I stopped immediately and threw that box out. That is the only weird store bought ammo issue I have had. (I'm not counting ammo that the gun does not shoot accurately. Split brass is a fatigue issue. On brand new brass, all I can figure is an over pressure issue. That generally comes from too hot of a charge of powder.) I am surprised it was Federal with the issue. However, I suppose anyone could have a bad lot number get out. That is why they have recalls and safety warnings on their sites. Glad it is resolved.
Well I went to the store to buy this thing today and I ended up buying something totally different so thanks for getting me into the store haha. The 300 blk is legal for hunting here in IL so I bought an American ranch 300blk on sale. Not as small as a single shot but still pretty packable.
Sometimes, even a reliable manufacturer like Federal, can have a bad lot of brass, these days brass is recycled & could have some contaminants in the mix! Or somewhere in the process of annealing the brass it may have gotten too hot or cooled off too fast & that can effect the strength of the brass! Without microscopic examination, you can't just see the weakened with your eyes, especially if the brass has been polished!
So then, by definition, Rossi could not duplicate the problem because they could not perform a test using the "same" ammo that came from the same box. It brings to mind when I experienced misfires from a single box of Winchester ammo and have yet to see it happen again with any other boxes of factory ammo in the same or any other rifle. Thankfully, Winchester gave me a full refund for that box and another of the same load I had purchased at the same time.
My daughters 243 doesn't like win deer season, it will not feed and lock up, i tried 2 different boxes and it wouldn't work with either feeds everything else just fine
This video just makes me miss the H&R "Handi Rifles" of years gone by. Especially the one in .45-70 that the best friend I ever had talked me out of. He passed away and left his collection to his clueless stepson.
Please contact Federal. Personally, in 4 decades of shooting, twice I've had issues with Federal ammo. Weirdly, both times were straight wall casings. Both times, they were apologetic, gracious, and more than resolved the issue. Firearms are often blamed when issues like this occur, yet ammunition isn't infallible.
I had some of the swaged-lead hollowpoints in 45 Colt from Federal that split cases on firing. I sent the ammo back to Federal at their invitation, and they got back to me to tell me that the brass had been weakened by exposure to ammonia at some point. They also sent me two boxes of ammo as a replacement for the two boxes I didn't have any confidence in any more.
Might need to pick up one of these Rossi single shots now that we know the ammo was to blame. Good group on that other lot # too! Can’t wait to see how the other ammo does!
I would contact Federal about the brass. I bought some brass from Sig last year and 12 out of 50 of them the necks cratered. Called Sig and she told me to throw them away and she sent me a new bag of 50. Had no problems with the new ones.
Had split necks on easy safe loads in a 35 Whelen, it was Hornady brass, handloads were light for deer hunting. It happens, poor quality control. I bet Hornady resized 30-06 brass from 308 to 358 to make Whelen brass and the necks are thin now. Good video, good metholology.
I’ve reloaded for 30+ years. I will not use Remington brass. It split the cases, from the case mouth to the shoulder, 80% of the time. I never turned the necks of any of the cases, all first time loads, all well within loading data, no signs of over pressures.
I have over 1000 357 Mags from RP and in my Taurus’ they split more often than my S&Ws. However they would split one per 100 or so… some have been loaded 4 or 5 times and still get the same thing once in a while … That said seems to work well and works well. These have been mostly FULL power 125 SJHP Remington loads using 21-22gr H110. Rest have been full power loads of Major Pistol… My new RP 444 Marlin made into 309 JDJ are awesome.
Federal should want all the information there is about that lot, as they might issue a recall. Split cases represent a risk to the shooter - a semi-auto comes to mind. I'd be surprised if they wouldn't aggressively seek to have that box delivered to them for testing - brass lot, powder, primer, heat treatment/annealing machine settings, etc. Rossi is to be acknowledged for both their willingness to test and their replacement policy; good on ya, Rossi - confidence-inspiring customer service that took them up in visibility and rep in my view, for sure. On behalf of other shooters who may have ammo from that same lot, and are, as a result, potentially in danger, I'd join in encouraging a call to Federal. Thanks for the info - it's a great benefit to the shooting community. Kudos to you!
They may have just loaded a batch too hot. That's why I stick to my own handloads whenever possible. Your other video I thought you had tried different ammo but I guess I wasn't watching it close enough. Being a poor prepper reloader I tend to reuse my brass and particularly with 5.56 since I load them fairly hot to the old Belgium specs that the military used to use and after about 3 uses on my brass I get a tiny little crack at the neck. Not enough to get gas blowback or effect accuracy noticeably but enough to prompt me to throw away the brass. I'm glad it worked out and it was nice of Rossi to replace it.
I had a carbon 6.5 creedmor barrel that split a few cases during break-in. After removing the barrel and dropping in a pin gauge we realized that one axis of the chamber diameter was .002" wider than the .264 diameter which means a little more expansion room for the brass. The manufacturer was awesome and replaced it asap.
Glad to see the Rossi was not at fault. The brass may not have been properly annealed before loading at the factory. I had a similar problem with.17 HMR from one reputable manufacturer.
I had a similar problem with PPU 9.3x62mmMauser ammo. I pulled the remaining bullets, resized the case necks, reduced the powder charge by 10%, reassembled the cartridges, and the problem went away. Velocity was only reduced by 100 fps or 4%.
Idk if you will actually read this comment but I do want to say thank you for the daily videos. I usually watch all your videos sometimes same day or day or two later but my father recently passed this Past weekend and he loved guns just as I do and these past couple days, your videos kinda help me kinda go back to before he passed and have a short sense of normalcy. Thanks. Whoteewho.
Hey Who_Tee, I'd try some more manufacturers ammo. I bought a Rossi semi action 22WMR back a few years ago and had the same issues with case destruction (either splits, case head separation,or even pieces of brass separating from the case!) Brought this issue up with the store i bought it from, and ended up doing some test shots. Shot 10 rounds of 7 different brands and different grain weights. Then brought the cases and gun back to my gun store to send back to Rossi. Rossi also couldn't replicate the damaged cases. Sent me a new one and I traded it towards a new handgun, I didn't want to go through the hassle again.
I had a feeling it was the box. Im pretty familiar with Rossi rifles there quality is better than most people think. And now i have an idea of how good their customer service is too.
Its the ammo we had a similar issue with hornady 17hmr. Causing splits and in some cases it destroyed a couple rifles hornady recalled and refunded and covered the cost of the rifles for our customers.
I HAVE A 30-06 WITH A 20 GA BARREL CHANGEABLE SETUP I BOUGHT SEVERAL YEARS AGO. IT HAS A WOOD STOCK AND WOOD FOR ARM. IT WILL TAKE DOWN EVERY THING IN FRONT OF AND WOUND EVERYTHING BEHIND IT
I once opened a box of new centerfire cartridges and found the brass was already split. Showed it to the dealer and he went in the back to check the stock. This was not the same caliber or maker as yours. He had 10 boxes of split cases. They were sent back for replacement. Check your ammo. I also had a box of 38 Special +P 158 gr SWCHP Lead ammo that still had the case flare and would not chamber. Stuff happens. Good video.
Glad you got this sorted out. Seems like the ammo. A side note though, you really should have stopped shooting and splitting cases a long time ago. Not trying to be that guy, but here's something to keep in mind. Every time you split a case like that you're letting hot gas mixed with very abrasive carbon escape there at 55,000 PSI and it is going to erode the chamber. It is a very small amount of damage but it's there. Do it enough and that chamber is done for. Arguably it's likely not the exact same spot in the chamber every time, but it adds up.
You should really try the Winchester Powermax. They are the only factory load that will reliably expand with my 12.5" barrel. I remember you saying that you haven't recovered a deer with 350 legend. I've used all factory loads (except for noslers new cartridge in 350) on deer and I promise you will not be disappointed. Powermax and FTX (if you can't find Powermax or the defender series) is the way to go with 350 legend. FTX works great also if you slow down below 1600 fps.
Early Federal .32 H&R Mag brass was also prone to splitting. Some at first firing, others after one or two reloads. I assumed it was so that people would not buy a box or two for the brass, and then reload that brass indefinitely, and not buy any more FC ammo in that caliber. Later lots of FC ammo/brass did NOT have that problem. I'm not saying yes, and I'm not saying no, but it might be something to consider.
I wonder if the suppressor adds more back pressure as we know from suppressed semi autos. Yes I know this isn't a semi auto, but, when you fire a gun, the brass casing expands, forming a good seal to the chamber, and brass also shrinks suddenly, so it can be ejected from the chamber. If it's in the shrinking stage, and the back pressure (because of the suppressor) is hitting it again, the casing might be in a stress, and might cause a split. Everything happens in milliseconds, and I might be wrong, and there may be bad brass, or the moon was not correctly placed etc. Interesting stuff happens. 😂 And then it doesn't. Edit: try the "bad batch" with a chrono, with a suppressor, and without, and the good box too, there might be some overpressure issues also.
Federal will research if you take the time to contact them and explain the situation. A friend had a .22 cal case head completely blown off which had to be extracted by a gunsmith. It took some time, but Winchester replied with a report and a voucher. This is a liability situation that Federal will want to investigate. Just happy you weren't injured.
I suspect it's actually the ammo lot brass might be too hard and not annealed so it split instead of stretch but barrel chamber might be too loose on that first rifle.
I got a old 243 barrel didn't even bore sight it but first 2 shots were almost touching 1 foot high and left from bullseye, adjusted scope got halfway between the first 2 and bullseye, made 2nd adjust next 4 shots couldn't even hit 4x6 sheet of plywood, all I did was clean the barrel with wet then dry cotton patch on 6mm copper brush. Using Hornady 100 grain american whitetail
You can take calipers and measure the diameter of the brass on some unfired rounds where it's splitting. I'm betting they undersized the cases too much on that run. I've had a lot of bad factory ammo the past few years, I just buy brass and load my own ammo for everything now, bigger up front cost but the brass is generally higher quality.
Brass could definitely be an issue. Although highly unlikely, the chamber could also be out of spec. If you have split brass from another manufacturer, have a chamber cast done so measurements can be taken. If it is out of spec, it will give you factual information to provide the manufacturer.
Hey pal. Think I might try the simmons on the 270. If it messes up I'm gonna grab a Burris or a vortex what would u recommend for that 270..if the simmons don't work. And do u use scope tap?. Tks man really appreciate it.
Bought bunch of hpr 5.56 once. Have a really good ar15. Puckered the primers and got stuck in the chamber had to beat out with a cleaning rod. Still have the rest of the 500 rounds. Puckered means the primers turned inside out like a belly button outy not a inny.
I had American eagle 30.06 the necks were splitting I took a close look at the unfired rounds and they all had micro cracks and I could easily break the bullet out of the case very brittle too
Well that was about what I figured it to be. Check with federal they might already have a recall on that lot of ammo. Their site ought to tell you how you can find the lot number on the box. Rossi on the other hand showed they are a good company when they couldn’t get that problem to show up again, all they were on the hook for was to send the gun back and tell you you got a bad lot of ammo.
I had a bad batch of Federal .22lr ammo. I emailed Federal and they shipped me another box on their dime, no questions asked! They didn’t even want the faulty ammo sent back. That went a long ways towards my opinion of their reputation.
@WHOTEEWHO I know, but you ended up shooting quite a few of those anyway. After just 2 bad ones you could have tried a different ammo type quick, maintaining the same level of risk but finding the problem immediately and saving a lot of time. But yeah, hindsight is 20/20.
Did you check the unfired rounds? I had some 5.56 that split. Thought it was the rifle. Looked and saw some of the unfired rounds were split at the neck.
That issue with the Federal ammo is why I don't buy Federal same issue along with blown primers in the mid 90's - & in late 80's it was Remington failure to go off constantly - and that is why I have handloaded every round after 1993 & never had a issue since,,, & I just marked off my 4-million-th reloaded round..... Stay away from Remington and Federal & you won't have them issies
Does it split the brass without the suppressor? Does it split the brass with different ammo? You have to be able to answer these questions to determine if it’s the ammo or the rifle chamber.
Big thumbs up to Rossi for exchanging the rifle even though they couldn't find a fault. Thats good service
... I think Rossi has pulled up their socks in regards to quality control and customer service from the "not so good ole days" ... the new Rossi rifles I checked are pretty well built ... they've also pulled up their MSRPs alot

Might try that box of ammo in another rifle of the same caliber to see if it will continue to split cases.
Interesting because Federal is known to use very soft brass. Looks to me like they had a lot of improperly annealed brass making to too brittle.
yeah that's what I'm thinking at this point that its an ammo issue
I had some tarnished 223 62 grain fmj American Eagle ammo that Federal warrantied/refunded, no major questions asked.
Definitely talk to federal about it. May even ask for the brass.
I found out with a Taurus I had, a half decent bore scope ( around $100 paid for mine) will show you many things. Made it easy for me to find a pit in the chamber that caused the brass to expand out into it, ruining brass and causing spent rounds to stick. I was going to ask if the Lot numbers on the boxes were the same.
Brass could just have needed annealing, work hardened from manufacturing.
The 350 is it own case, you can not turn a .223 case into a 350 case.

I've had one very old & worn-out rifle that did this.
I HAVE seen brand new shotgun shells that had split brass, brand new out of the box.
Federal ammunition has wonderful customer service. Please call or write to them about the split ammo. It will be worth your effort.
Glad it worked out 💪
I had a box of 357 magnum ammo, and every case split. I copied the lot number down to check other boxes and warn my hunting buddies about it.
Federal’s new prototype ammo, designed to prevent reloading. 😂
I had a similar problem with PPU 9.3x62mmMauser ammo. I pulled the remaining bullets, resized the case necks, reduced the powder charge by 10%, reassembled the cartridges, and the problem went away. Velocity was only reduced by 100 fps or 4%.
It's the cases. I had some Federal 327 magnum factory rounds that split like that while they were in the box before firing.
Thanks. Whoteewho.
I read em all. So sorry to hear the news. I hurt for you. Sending you a big hug from Tennessee
Good video.
Yikes
That blackhound is nice, got that one too. Got the WTW discount 👍
Good choice!
I've had split brass happen in 44mag, 45acp, 9x18mak. All str8 wall. Not often but enuf to wear safety gear.
WTW interesting 🤔 👀 as always
A faulty box 📦 of ammo 👍
Early Federal .32 H&R Mag brass was also prone to splitting. Some at first firing, others after one or two reloads. I assumed it was so that people would not buy a box or two for the brass, and then reload that brass indefinitely, and not buy any more FC ammo in that caliber.
Later lots of FC ammo/brass did NOT have that problem.
I'm not saying yes, and I'm not saying no, but it might be something to consider.
Good to know you figured it out
I wonder if the suppressor adds more back pressure as we know from suppressed semi autos.
I just sighted my Rossi 350 legend in Monday, 1 to 1-1/2 inch groups at 100 no issues at all
Federal will research if you take the time to contact them and explain the situation.
Thanks for another great video!
Thanks for watching
Props to Rossi for working with you.
You’ve probably breathed in more lead fumes than you would get from that brass!
Brother hope everything works out for you I'll say one thing it's quite as all get out
My guess the ammo the Federal brass is bad need to try another brand
Did you check the over all length of the brass , they might not be trimmed correctly . I had that problem when I started reloading 350 legend
I've once bought a box of Barnaul 243 that was loaded too hot from the factory. Split cases and pressure signs. It happens.
My 350 Cascade loves the Subsonic 250 grains. Half inch group at 100.
Awesome
Brass could definitely be an issue. Although highly unlikely, the chamber could also be out of spec. If you have split brass from another manufacturer, have a chamber cast done so measurements can be taken. If it is out of spec, it will give you factual information to provide the manufacturer.
Hey pal. Think I might try the simmons on the 270. If it messes up I'm gonna grab a Burris or a vortex what would u recommend for that 270..if the simmons don't work. And do u use scope tap?. Tks man really appreciate it.
Should be fine. I never use scope tape
@WHOTEEWHO ok. I used some ⅓ inch wide stuff last time think that woulda jammed the scope from moving.?
Nice worked out!
Had a few dozen split cases of Federal 9mm a few years back bad brass
Bought bunch of hpr 5.56 once. Have a really good ar15. Puckered the primers and got stuck in the chamber had to beat out with a cleaning rod. Still have the rest of the 500 rounds. Puckered means the primers turned inside out like a belly button outy not a inny.
Yikes
What ear pro are you using and do you like it?? I need some electronic plugs.
Caldwell shadow pro
I had American eagle 30.06 the necks were splitting I took a close look at the unfired rounds and they all had micro cracks and I could easily break the bullet out of the case very brittle too
THAT is a little unsettling! Thanks for the feedback.
It's the ammo. Lot of brass that probably wasn't annealed properly or a bad alloy.
Hard brass usually only happens after multiple firings . Mil rifles have oversize chambers .
You could possibly test the brass thickness with calipers on the ones that split compared to the ones that didn't?
As experienced as you are I am very surprised you didn't try different ammo before sending the rifle back for warranty.
Not gonna risk getting myself hurt
@WHOTEEWHO I know, but you ended up shooting quite a few of those anyway. After just 2 bad ones you could have tried a different ammo type quick, maintaining the same level of risk but finding the problem immediately and saving a lot of time. But yeah, hindsight is 20/20.
I didn't know they were splitting until afterward the 1st time.
Did you check the unfired rounds? I had some 5.56 that split. Thought it was the rifle. Looked and saw some of the unfired rounds were split at the neck.
Not yet but I will
I have some of that. Mine is splitting cases too on a gas gun.
Looks like the suppressor is causing extreme back pressure. Try without the suppressor
I believe both him AND Rossi tested with and without the suppressor. Take care! 👍
I just wanted to write down do not put that brass, lead poisoning”, but you got me first. 😂
🤣🤣🤣
Definitely send the lot number to Federal I would also do a cerrosafe casting of the chamber and look for dimensions and imperfections.
Damnit! I wanted to like this thing so bad. Cva scout is hard to find right now.
Wait to see the whole video
@ you don’t have to twist my arm for that haha.
Buds has a few.
Make Steve Hornady replace the box of bad ammo!
Why would Hornady replace his federal ammunition? Federal makes its own brass as well so it’s there no outsourcing of that I’m aware of for them.
