I had no idea that G.I. Joe was exclusive. I especially loved the first one as kid - I'll never forget playing it on a rental and my brother who used to pick on me a lot as a kid pushed me too far and I beat him in a fight for the first time. That marked a huge change in our sibling relationship (for the better!) and it all happened while I was playing G.I. Joe on the NES.
This is random, but- You guys are lucky you have such a strong, lasting friendship in each other. Last Friday I lost my best friend since elementary school in a motorcycle accident, he was 26. He was someone where as soon as he took interest in a game he would commit himself till he was the best. Then when playing with you he wouldn't take it as a burden to step back down to your level and teach you everything he could. There's so many titles, and even systems, I probably would never know about it if it wasn't for him. Who knows if I would even be a fan of your show today if it wasn't for growing up with him, and having that passion shared with me. There's going to be a lot of games that are never going to feel right playing again. Knowing how long you two have been friends honestly brings joy to my heart. Time moves by so fast, it's all to short to make nothing but good memories. Even if it's sitting around playing a video game together, you're still going to look back on those times as something irreplaceable.
Hey, here's an ideia: Games Left in Brazil! Our video game market was so different that a lot of stuff happened. We had a Street Fighter 2 for the Master System and also call the Gensis Mega Drive, like Europe and Japan
Tec Toy did a great job here with the master system and mega drive/genesis. There were also a lot of famiclones before nintendo had an official representation here.
We in Europe didn't call it the Megadrive, we called it the Sega. Many of us even called Nintendo consoles the Sega. Some of us pronounced it 'See-ga'. In my town we did, until they started advertising gaming products on TV regularly, then it kind of morphed into 'Say-ga', and finally, by about 1996: 'So-ny'.
As the Netherlandians already mentioned, G.I. Joe was pretty popular in Europe. We had all the action figures and they showed the cartoons too. I had a lot of figures back then and even two episodes on VHS. :D Still got two t-shirts. Doesn't make much sense that we missed out on the NES games.
Am I the only one that keep's checking how long the episode has to go? Only because I don't want it to end is all! I really enjoy this show. It's the only Subscription on UA-cam I look forward to watch ! Thank's guy's!
G.I. Joe was popular overseas and the American themes were taken out. For instance in the UK it was called Action Force, which is connected to some interesting toy history if your curious. Also, Storm Shadow did have an interesting background in the Marvel comics but he also was re-released as a Joe in the Hasbro toy line at some point in the late 80's.
Hey guys! Just before you showed Bimini Run, you briefly played a remixed version of Sparkman's theme from Megaman 3 that I've never heard. Where did you find that? What's the artist and the name of the track? I want to look that up. Thanks!
nintendoboy17 But apparently Zoda's Revenge didn't get released in Europe until it came out on Virtual Console. I'd say that's close enough to count. :)
Daytime Sky It actually did get released in Japan on the Wii's virtual console, however. It does need some love in Smash, though. Mike Jones would be boss, and I'd prefer him over someone like Ness.
This was a great episode. It took me awhile to check out your channel but i'm glad i finally did. I'm looking forward to watching all of your older videos.
G.I. Joe not popular outside the US? Don't know if it was sarcasm, but since my sarcasm detector is broken I can tell you G.I. Joe was huge in the Netherlands. We got all the toys and cartoons. I even remember watching the movie of the cartoon as a kid. I can't imagine why they didn't release the games over here.
I think the Gameboy Color game "Warlocked" was only released in North America. Its a bit weird since its an RTS on a Gameboy, but I always enjoyed it and the music is pretty good.

In Brazil we import everything, so we never care if it's officially released here or not. Actually usually the officially released products are more expensive.
There's these games based on the American Girl doll series that, for more or less obvious reasons (well since relatively few know about the dolls outside North America) it never saw an international release apart from the in-house developed mobile apps. Even for a fan of the series such as myself, most of the games leave a lot to be desired. Kit Mystery Challenge for the DS was more of an Asimo simulator and a frustrated attempt at a Nancy Drew style game. Same case with Julie's which ran off the same engine. The PC games by THQ were meh, but it's OKish. AG Premiere however is more of a kitsch-fest and could give you hours of unintentional hilarity, no thanks to the text-to-speech feature.
Good to see Bimini Run in motion and color me impressed. That's some nice software spite scaling, especially for an early game. I think the effect here is actually more impressive than in Sega Super Scaler Genesis ports. Never got why they were so lazy with those. I mean, Afterburner II actually looks and runs better on a TG16 with a lot more scaling!
You guys have covered N America, Japan and European exclusives. The last market you guys should touch is possibly S American/Brazilian exclusive games. Like Duke Nukem 3D on the Mega Drive and Street Fighter II on the Master System. Strider NES was North-American-Only. That's all I can think of that's any good.
Yeah, the rest of the North American exclusive games I can think of are REALLY bad. I mean, we had games like Action 52, Rocky And Bullwinkle(the NES game), Big Rigs, the list goes on with trash.
Another great episode. I'm still waiting for that special Snatcher episode, and the differences in game versions from around the world. Thanks guys. Gamesack rules!
We did do an episode about remakes. Games like Ducktales, Castle of Illusion, Flashback etc....Or are you thinking about games like Fez and Shovel Knight etc..
David White Yes I saw it It was a good vid. I kept it vague on purpose but my line of thought was: "What theme hasn't been a game sack episode?" "Well they only do retro games, so anything related to modern gaming they haven't done" "Yes but they do not want to do modern, retro is their thing" "What if they did modern AND retro at the same time, nowadays is fashion being retro, so there are plenty of games" "Yes yes, and since they are new they have less probability of having already apearded in other episodes" Yeah ...stuff :P Once again the ideia was to help unlock new ideias for the show, not a request or anything.
Were any of the Id publishing games released in Japan? I would think Wolfenstein in particular would have been a questionable release since it dealt with World War II and the Japanese perspective WWII is a bit different since Japan had no direct involvement in the European theater of the war.
Being able to criticize a game for whom you have acquaintance with the developers? Actually criticizing said game instead of giving it a lavish tounge bath? Wow, you guys have more journalistic integrity than Kotaku. Seriously though, I love your show.
I'm pissed of only about Xenogears and Chrono Cross... I'm so mad, because I can't buy them for my vita... Still can play pirated verion on emulator/PS2/PS1... but damn, why Sony doesn't want my money?
Good god, those Contra games on the PS... I hated that in the early and mid 90s, how every damn company was hot to turn everything 3D. I was glad that Shattered Soldier took the Contra games back to 2D (well, 2.5D - which was awesome!!).
David White But then other games made the 3D transition beautifully, Zelda, Starfox, Mario.. Final Fantasy's transition wasn't too bad, though its early 3D titles weren't terribly wonderful eye candy (But, what on the PS1 was?)
Heck ya, ROLLING THUNDER!? I totally forgot about that game, but I LOVE it. I used to play it in the arcade all the time when I could, and I have memories of burning through a roll of quarters when I was stuck in a Holiday Inn on a family vacation back in like 1994
Great episode! A nice bunch of games it was interesting to hear your opinion about. Something I can never understand is why the dropped the co-op in RT3.
So glad you guys covered GI JOE, easily one of my top 10 games from the nes ERA and IMO one of the best games based on a license EVAR. thanks again for covering it guys.
GI Joe is actually pretty big in Japan, it was reworked into “henshin cyborg” which had a spin off called “microman” which was brought stateside as “micronauts”, and that had a spin-off called “micro change” - which was combined with another toy line called “dia clone” before being brought over as a franchise you might be familiar with - Transformers. But classic Gi joe is also popular in Japan
GI Joe is pretty decent. Price has sightly be going up. Atlantis Factor is just as good if not, better. I have the first one.The reason you dont know the enemies, is because most of them are based of the DIC version of the show...which was in 1989. The original 1st gen ran from 1983 to 1986. Both games are not hard at all. But thats just my opinion.
David White Back then, testing NES games, we had to do "compatibility checks" on every hardware revision, including Famicom, and video tape everything. The Famicom, as you know, has this microphone built in to the controller. Well, the "tester" got bored testing on the Famicom, and thought it would be funny to say "Smoke cigarettes and drink beer," in a high-pitched voice. (Remember, this was pre-ESRB and during the stringent limitations against alcohol, drugs, and violence) As a joke, he pointed the taped "bug" out to his supervisor. It sounded so real, the boss', boss', boss got involved. Suddenly, they're all in an uproar about this NES game promoting tobacco and alcohol use and ready to tear into the licensee. "Tester" sheepishly had to admit that it was a joke and apologize. His fellow testers never let him live that down.
Considering Konami made it, I wonder if the Lone Ranger game had any of the same people working on it as Bayou Billy. After all, it's a game that mixes multiple different genres, including Zapper sections.
The video rental store in my town had imported a us copy pf jurassic park for the sega mega drive. I rented it and got a converter cartidge with is the goes between the game and the console.
Regarding Rolling Thunder 3. I worked at a video game store back in the 90's and I swear we sold that game and got them straight from Sega. Sure, it wasn't officially released, but I seem to remember that the cart worked fine out of the box on PAL machines. Am I getting old and confused? Someone back me up on this! :)
Holammer I've def seen RT3 PAL carts for sale for ridiculous prices, but I was never sure if they were legit or bootlegs. Maybe they were a regional release, like Mr. Gimmick?
G.I Joe was a huge success here in Brazil. It was called Comandos em Ação (Commandos in Action), and there were a lot of toys. I had the Destro action figure.
Some of these games should have been left on the drawing board. Entertaining reviews though :) As a side note, I remember playing G.I. Joe as a kid on my friend's Nintendo. I can't hardly remember anything about it though.
We did actually have the G.I. Joe action figures in Europe which was quite popular, however this was called "action force" here without any pro-American nationalism attached.
ONE THOUSAND PERCENT GUARANTEE that Joe is the type of guy that got butthurt and suddenly reset games as a kid, whenever he was losing. I'd bet my bottom dollar on it.
Sega Saturn Shoot Em' Up or "Shmup", as Dave calls them, would be a really cool video. Joe is the reason I started collecting for the Saturn and I would live your hear his input on the Shmups for it. Also, the Saturn episode is what made me buy Sengoku Blade 2. You only showed it briefly and would be awesome to see if you like it or not. Thanks for the awesome channel guys.
The Lone Ranger is still on my NES wish list. I had no idea that it hadn't been released outside of North America... although, considering the source material, I shouldn't be terribly surprised. Changing styles of gameplay-- similar to what we see in Vice Project Doom or WURM-- tends to keep experiences fresh, as long as the gameplay is executed properly. I wish I could get into the Rolling Thunder games. RT3 does look and sound really good, but the duck and cover shooting gameplay style just doesn't grab me. That said, much like the Splatterhouse sequels for the Genesis, I always find it interesting to see arcade sequels made specifically for consoles. Perhaps it was a harbinger of changing times as arcades would eventually give way to console popularity. Oh. C: The Contra Adventure. I still, to this day, don't understand why Konami farmed out Contra to Appaloosa Interactive TWICE. Contra: Legacy of War was bad enough. C: The Contra Adventure makes you think that lessons were learned after the previous disasterbacle... but nope. Just... ew. No. It was sad to see such a good IP take a nosedive in the 32/64-bit era like Contra did. Funny how Castlevania found a better fate than Contra, and then the two IPs kind of shifted spots on the PS2 as the Contra games got a bit better while the Castlevania games got a bit worse. Thanks for another entertaining video. Have a great time at Retropalooza!
It's not that The Long Ranger didn't have a following outside of the US, but there's a generational problem there since it's not quite as big a part of pop culture (selling cars for example). My dad is quite fond of The Lone Ranger, buuut he's 70. :P
Actually, GIjoe was known as Action Force initially in Europe. It had its own comic series and the nationality of some characters were changed to european.
we had GI JOE but it was called "action force" in england. i think two franchises may have merged together at some point and i remember the figurines changing drastically at some point from being unjointed scuba divers and paratroopers to bendy limbed mad max style dudes..i frigging loved em..we used to make watertight chambers for em in my mate's back garden with sticks, leaves etc covering a hole then burying em and i remember years later, my mates mum excavating one fully preserved after about 15 years haha..just thought i'd share that..never thought about time crisis being related to rolling thunder but i can definitely see what you mean!
Andy Davidson It would be a shame if the GI Joe cartoon movie was never enjoyed outside of the US. I will apologize for the live action movies on behalf of America though. Now we're even for the Spice Girls. 😀
Entertaining as always. Got to agree on the mystery as of why Rolling Thunder 3 was left in the US. Also, left in China. Classic! back when I was a students I had so many Chinese "original" Saturn games :) Now I've got pretty much every Japanese title for real. Oh, how times change as you mature.
while it's a crime that Elevator Action Returns still hasn't shown up, I was quite pleased to see Rolling Thunder 3! Awesome game in what Joe calls the Walk & Gun genre.
It’s one of my top 10 games. It has one of the best OST I have ever heard!
Dave you were such a gangsta in the day

"This game's exactly like the first... only completely different!"
Joe is my favorite video game reviewer ever.
Hey, here's an ideia: Games Left in Brazil!

Castelo do Dragão ftw
Would love to see that.

You guys always upload when I'm in the mood for Game Sack...
Plants VS Zombies Garden Warfare has Chester Cheeto DLC characters, weapons, and attacks....
Just letting you guys know, another great episode!
a tip: you can watch movies at Flixzone. Been using them for watching all kinds of movies recently.
@Rene Gerald Yea, I have been watching on flixzone for years myself =)
Dang! That slap at the end actually seemed like it was pretty hard!
I LOVE Bimmy & Jimmy Run. Such a great Double Dragon boating crossover game
my weekly dose of Game Sack isn't even enough, have watched all of your videos xD
" Something for the ladies " I'm gonna miss you Dave .
What happened to him. I just started watching the channel
@@tollboothkyle he left for personal reasons . Family and work I believe .
8:54 *Bees. My God.*
(Sidenote: there are actually some restaurants in Japan that serve bee larvae. Just thought I'd mention that.)

Where did you find that? What's the artist and the name of the track? I want to look that up. Thanks!
Hope part 2 of this comes soon :) I love learning about games that were never released here in the UK :)
Sorry to say, but most of what we have is pure TRASH. Just look at games like Big Rigs, Action 52, Home Improvement, the list goes on!!!
Nintendo's Startropics series were actually made for a North American audience, but not released internationally. How about covering those?
StarTropics was released in Europe though, so that wouldn't count.
nintendoboy17 Didn't realize that. Shame it wasn't released in Japan. I'd like to see it recognized in Smash Bros.
nintendoboy17
But apparently Zoda's Revenge didn't get released in Europe until it came out on Virtual Console. I'd say that's close enough to count. :)
Daytime Sky It actually did get released in Japan on the Wii's virtual console, however.
It does need some love in Smash, though. Mike Jones would be boss, and I'd prefer him over someone like Ness.
GreatAwesomeReviewers
Since it was originally not released in Japan, was the Virtual Console release translated?
That "Daydreaming Davey" game will live forever in my nightmares.
I like that you covered GI Joe. I played the hell out of that game back in the day. Now if you'll excuse me I need to go unsub
Have you guys seen the AVGN episode of Day Dreaming Davey? Also, these country exclusive episodes makes me be really thankful for emulation. I also like how you did your credits outro. You guys deserve more subscribers and views.
Lol, "ROOOLLIN' St- Thunder III for the Sega Genesis."
I hated Rolling Thunder 3.
Thanks guys! Really enjoyed this video, I've been looking forward to it for a while .
Fingers crossed for a Left in Brazil then
In Brazil we import everything, so we never care if it's officially released here or not. Actually usually the officially released products are more expensive.
Okay, got my pizza rolls, combination if you're wondering, Dr. Pepper and the apartment is silent. Time to enjoy Game Sack before bed.
Lol I swear I'm eating and drinking the exact same thing!
Ew you guys still like soda? Whateva
Vectorman 2 is a North American genesis exclusive. It's not as good as the original, but it's still really fun.
I think it's worth importing overseas.
You guys are Awesome.
Thank You!
Mister E.
Thanks and yes I always had a girl or two at that time in my life. Lots of good memories. :)
i thumbs up every game sack episode before i even watch them. you guys are awesome and consistent.
You guys are awesome :D
Always so tempted to watch these at night but I like to wake up and have breakfast while watching
Same here hahaha
I actually had my bacon and eggs, OJ and coffee while watching this episode.
People often consider Time Crisis the spiritual successor to the Rolling Thunder series so not a bad observation, Dave.
I was about to perform brain surgery, but there's a new Game Sack, so it'll have to wait...
*****
Release the hounds!
Thank you guys for the great videos! you are one of my favorite things on youtube!
What about doing a "retro-inspired modern games" episode?
We did do an episode about remakes. Games like Ducktales, Castle of Illusion, Flashback etc....Or are you thinking about games like Fez and Shovel Knight etc..
David White Yes I saw it It was a good vid. I kept it vague on purpose but my line of thought was:
"What theme hasn't been a game sack episode?"
"Well they only do retro games, so anything related to modern gaming they haven't done"
"Yes but they do not want to do modern, retro is their thing"
"What if they did modern AND retro at the same time, nowadays is fashion being retro, so there are plenty of games"
"Yes yes, and since they are new they have less probability of having already apearded in other episodes"
Yeah ...stuff :P
Once again the ideia was to help unlock new ideias for the show, not a request or anything.
G.I. Joe was actually pretty popular here in Holland.
It was very popular here in New Zealand.
And gi joe outside of the us. Was known as action force or it was just and British thing
That's interesting it was still gi joe here and we are still part of the commonwealth
I mean there is a few things like that like ninja turtles In England its known as Teenage Munant hero turtles.
Again it's weird they were ninja's here I really don't get why they changed it?
Were any of the Id publishing games released in Japan? I would think Wolfenstein in particular would have been a questionable release since it dealt with World War II and the Japanese perspective WWII is a bit different since Japan had no direct involvement in the European theater of the war.
Pro tip for the first GI. Joe game. Level up SnakeEye's gun. He never runs out of builts when his ammo counter hits zero. Ninja Magic I guess?
Dave's looking like a total badass there, back in his heyday. I dig the Vanilla Ice look.
Oh yeah! I look back at that footage and think what a dork I was.
Each new episode keep looking more and more professional. Great job!
The ending of your videos are always my favorite part!
Nice use of Daytona's Rolling Start.
The guy in GI Joe at 4:19 would be a Cobra Range Viper.
Already like it, and it just started!
Keep up the awesome work dudes.
Rolling thunder 3 is too cool to fool ! Reminds me of elevator action returns
XD good one.
Being able to criticize a game for whom you have acquaintance with the developers? Actually criticizing said game instead of giving it a lavish tounge bath? Wow, you guys have more journalistic integrity than Kotaku. Seriously though, I love your show.
We had G. I. Joe over here in Denmark. It was called Action Force. It had the comics, the cartoons and the toys plus the unbeatable amiga game
I'm pissed of only about Xenogears and Chrono Cross... I'm so mad, because I can't buy them for my vita...
Still can play pirated verion on emulator/PS2/PS1... but damn, why Sony doesn't want my money?
I Like How Eduardo The Samarai Toaster Looks Like It's Shooting Pop Tarts
Good god, those Contra games on the PS... I hated that in the early and mid 90s, how every damn company was hot to turn everything 3D. I was glad that Shattered Soldier took the Contra games back to 2D (well, 2.5D - which was awesome!!).
I agree. More than a few great 2D games were ruined when they were made into 3D.
David White It kills Earthworm Jims dead
David White But then other games made the 3D transition beautifully, Zelda, Starfox, Mario.. Final Fantasy's transition wasn't too bad, though its early 3D titles weren't terribly wonderful eye candy (But, what on the PS1 was?)
David White yeah they ruined busby when they made busby 3 3d
+Haakon Anderson there's a 3D earthworm jim?!?! Damn... 3D really does kill
Thank you for recognizing TecToy from Brasil!
They only made shitty games and some hacked games, but they hold a dear place in my memories..
It would be awesome if you guys did an episode on that!!
Hell yeah! Been waiting for a new episode! Made another boring saturday night great again. Thanks guys!
You guys always have the best shirts on during your episodes!
Heck ya, ROLLING THUNDER!? I totally forgot about that game, but I LOVE it. I used to play it in the arcade all the time when I could, and I have memories of burning through a roll of quarters when I was stuck in a Holiday Inn on a family vacation back in like 1994
love these guys and there long videos, good shit
You are my favorite youtubers ever.
Aren't There Other Countries That've Exclusives?
How about this is the best episode I have ever seen. The slap was amazing.
This is my favorite youtube show. Reminds me of the games of my childhood. Keep it up guys! :D
Great episode! A nice bunch of games it was interesting to hear your opinion about. Something I can never understand is why the dropped the co-op in RT3.

What was the awesome shred guitar music at the end?
For tin star the money you get you can pay up for save game
That is correct. Something I over looked.
Ahh...Day Dreamin' Davey. There's a pretty funny story involving that game back when I was a tester.
Oh yeah? Do tell.
David White Back then, testing NES games, we had to do "compatibility checks" on every hardware revision, including Famicom, and video tape everything. That's a great story. Very funny.
@@tetrisdave Yeah, so good. I'll sub to him for that lol.
Thanks for the vid guys! Top job as always.
I love the sound of the Samurai Toaster game! I know it's repetitive but it's a cut above what's out today on consoles.
Considering Konami made it, I wonder if the Lone Ranger game had any of the same people working on it as Bayou Billy. After all, it's a game that mixes multiple different genres, including Zapper sections.
That Lone Ranger game was one of the first video games I ever got as a kid. Didn't think anyone had ever heard of it.
The video rental store in my town had imported a us copy pf jurassic park for the sega mega drive. I rented it and got a converter cartidge with is the goes between the game and the console.
Another high quality video, thanks for your work guys!
Guy on the right looks like Jeff Gerstmann's older brother, guy on the left looks like when you hit randomize in the Skyrim character creator.
Greg Lytle I've seen people say Joe looks like either like a young Chuck Norris or Ron Perlman, too.
Really love the show you guys make,
Keep on the good work!
Greetings from the netherlands.
Thank You!
We did actually have the G.I. Joe action figures in Europe which was quite popular, however this was called "action force" here without any pro-American nationalism attached.
The music at 13:10 reminded me so much of the intro music in Splatterhouse 3.
I just noticed that the revolver chamber used as a bullet counter in The Lone Ranger was reused by Konami for Lethal Enforcers.
ONE THOUSAND PERCENT GUARANTEE that Joe is the type of guy that got butthurt and suddenly reset games as a kid, whenever he was losing. I'd bet my bottom dollar on it.
Thanks for another great episode guys!
Thanks Peter!
The Chester Cheetah game was released in Brazil with Bananas in Pijamas characters replacing Chester Cheetah.
I was massively into GI Joe here in the UK (toys, cartoon, comic etc.) but here it was called Action Force 😜
Yeah, but too bad most US exclusive games I know of are pretty bad. Big Rigs is an example.
Left in China would be mostly comprised of Vinny and Joel's DOS Madness findings.
while it's a crime that Elevator Action Returns still hasn't shown up, I was quite pleased to see Rolling Thunder 3! Awesome game in what Joe calls the Walk & Gun genre.
13:48 where does this song comes from? its burned in my brain, but I cant remember...
Working late fellas! Awesome episodes! Thanks for all the hard work!
