    This is an awesome video. Thank you for clear directions on how to remove the speed sensor.
    My issue was that my speedometer needle was fluctuating at all speed and sometimes hesitating to accelerate or transmission won't shift gear smoothly.
    Before I change the sensor, I wanted to test to see how it works. I looked everywhere to find a way to test the sensor and I couldn't find one. Finally I found a copy of the service manual and was able to troubleshoot the sensor. I will list out below my method.
    How to test No. 1 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
    ***Need a voltmeter to perform this test.
    1. Remove the sensor from the vehicle.
    2. There are three screws on top of the sensor when facing the connector. They are placed in a triangular pattern. When you look down on the connector, single screw must be on top. That is your popularity mark. From this orientation, Left PIN =1 is battery POSITIVE, middle PIN = 2 is battery negative, and right PIN = 3 is SIGNAL.
    3. Connect the battery to the sensor. Battery positive to PIN 1 and negative to PIN 2.
    4. Place the voltmeter's position lead to PIN 3 and negative lead to PIN 2.
    5. Rotate the sensor gear shaft. The voltage will change from 0 to 12 to 0 Volts on the voltmeter. If it doesn't change the value, sensor is faulty.

    I was able to change my 98 Toyota Camry's speed sensor today thanks to your very detailed instructions. 98 Camry is almost exactly the same and I already took it for a test drive and everything is working perfectly. Thank you very much for saving me time and money.

    this is the ONLY place i have found that actually describes where the sensor is and the issues with aftermarket part. I so appreciate this video and weylinfairchild for posting it. I would add though for a correct fit after grinding off the tab and know a machinist take your old sensor so they can measure the diameter of it and machine the replacement on center to fit properly. Tolerance on the part can be + or - .015 of an inch because it has an oring so it should be cheap to have turned down. Again thank you very much for posting this weylinfairchild!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Areeb Uddin you need to replace the capacitors on both the tachometer and speedometer. They have a history of blowing after about 16 years. The tach has two 10uf 25 volt capacitors and the speedo has a 6.8uf , 22uf, and a 100uf 25 volt capacitors. They cost about $3.00 usd without shipping.

      Hello, I just repaired my tachometer on my 1993 camry. There are 2 capacitors (10uf/25volt) that needed to be replaced. There is another lady with a youtube channel called sarahntuned. She did an awesome video on how to identify, desolder, and resolder the capacitors. After 10+ years my tach is finally working. It only cost me 25 cents per capacitor at my local electronics shop. Might be a dollar each if you order online. There is another youtuber named Peter Finn who shows how to remove the dash. Only took me 5 minutes to remove the dash with just a screwdriver. There are two screws hiding underneath a cover located under the radio that he didn't show, but easy to find. Hope this helps!

    did changing speed sensor fix the problem??

    • @weylinfairchild
      @weylinfairchild  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, in this instance it fixed the fluctuating of the speedometer. I think sometimes it can be a motor in gauge cluster getting worn out but you can pick those up on eBay. Hope that helps.
