Great video Peter, I had a jumping needle and ticking sound on my 2003 Hi Lux speedometer. I installed a new genuine Toyota speedo cable and another speedo gauge from the wrecking yard, the problem is still there! AHHH!! It may be this sensor you replaced is also faulty in my gear box creating this annoying driver experience. Again, great work and thanks for sharing your knowledge. I like that you clean stuff before pulling things apart, me too, i don't want sand and rubbish in with those gears.
@@telecasteredtodeath my '97 Tacoma 5vZ does not have a sensor that looks anything like this, i am so stumped! it has a gear inside the transfer box that connects to a speedometre cable and that is all i can see... i cannot find a speed sensor on ANY parts diagram for my rig!
Good video between your channel and several others I have save thousands of dollars doing it my self!! With those savings i have bought tools and have become very comfortable working on my 4 Toyotas
Reason why it's in nice condition is because you're in California. If you were on the East coast, it would be a Flinstone wagon with holes thru the floor !
truth to that! i rarely if ever see one of these old Yotas on the roads anymore where i am at in rust belt area... but this '93 truck had all the nasty corrosion in the engine bay perhaps from the salty ocean mist?
Great video! I may need to replace mine, it goes in and out (also have 93) Wish I could give bonus like for a James Bond Villain teaching me how to do this.
Hi Peter, I have the same Pickup with an issue with the speedometer it's not working correctly, can you tell me how to diagnosis that problem? Is the problem from this sensor or it's from the cluster? Thanks
Hi Peter from Australia. Very precise instructions. I'm going to try this myself. My speedo, tacho and heat gauge are all on the same fuse, 10Amp, which keeps blowing. I'm guessing there's a short in the sensor.
All you really need is the rubber (o ring) gasket for around 5-cents at Lowes or Home Depot, in which case you wouldn't even need to remove the clip & gear because it's much bigger to pass right over those and slip it on.
Great video but I just attempted to do this without draining the trans fluid and lost a LOT of oil, even though the truck was jacked up from the passenger side. So be prepared to drain and change your trans oil when you are installing a new speed sensor. Not sure how Peter did it with minimal spillage.
Is there a source for the little clip that retains the gear shaft? I Set one aside, and now can't locate. Not all sensors come with the gear, and one source could not guarantee a clip was included. PS.. what do you think of the sensor quality on Ebay? I am picking up a $30 spare with gear; Kind of heavy handed just to get a clip, too, but if it is reliable, nice to have spares in the parts box. I have changed one years ago in my truck. I bought direct from dealer then; even now the dealer price is less than it used to be.
I have a 2006 Tacoma and the Four Wheel Drive Light is flashing on the dashboard and now the four wheel drive does not work. Would you know why. Also this is a standard transmission truck. Thank you for your help.
I have one major question if there was another gear with more teeth would it make it run wrong I have the original with 31 teeth the new one has 33 what would it do the trans
Hello, i have a double cab diesel 2.8 4x4, year 1994, gen 5 th (i guess), run 280 000 km, yes in km, and the odo and speed are not working anymore. The sensor looks very much like in your video, but there is alot lot of number ofthe second part of the number. Are they all the same ? Can i buy aftermarket ones ?

Hi there, I have a Toyota 100 series landcruiser 1HDTFE one, and notice a flashing O/D on my dash. it does come sometimes and then after maybe a couple of km the flash is off again. from my google research it give a lot of things to diagnose the problem and one is the speed sensor and some say maybe the shift solenoid? i knew i need to send it to toyota but i want to know what are the causes that may result in O/D flashing. it does not come often but it so annoying when the flash comes out again. it maybe a major problem as well of my beloved truck.. Hi just replaced the sensor and still speedometer not working, will appreciate your comment what can I do now same truck 92 pickup base model rear wheel drive manual transmission 4 cylinder
@@erickvillarroel8786 that's the cheapest "solution" haha! (but is probably either speedometer needs to be removed with cluster gauge and cleaned/ resoldered OR its a speedo cable wiring issue)
I am having trouble putting my gear back in on the end of the sensor. It just bottoms out hitting on something inside the transmission. I'll try again tomorrow, maybe I need to stab it in straight lining up the bolt holes.

In this episode, Peter gives us the gears and makes sensor out of everything. Nice repair. Nice truck!😎

I agree. The dealership told the customer it needed replacing and I don't trust the dealership.

Nice shop bro!
Exelent job sr
Was that a worm gear driving the plastic gear?
thank you for sharing. if the gear fluid is low. is there a special gear fluid or just use transmission fluid to top it off?
use gear oil like you would use for differentials or manual. if you have a auto that will use atf and should not be used in the transfer case
So did it work ?
