I was born in southwest Michigan. By the time I was 19 I had lived in 9 different states and approx 20 towns. My favorite place on earth is in the middle of Tennessee. Fast forward to 2022. I'm retired, and as long as I don't HAVE to drive when the "Lake Effect" snow is piling up around us, and I don't HAVE to shovel the drive way, I'm good! Southwest Michigan grows some of the best fruits and veggies. There are grape vineyards, and wineries everywhere. ...............Noooo Hurricanes, seldom a tornado, and water to drink AND swim in. Compared to many other states, I'll stay put!

I lived in Michigan for many years. Other pros: the BEST fresh strawberries in the world! Late June/early July the u-pick fields are great! Also, Cider Mills! Nothing better on a crisp fall day to have some fresh pressed apple cider and a warm, crispy, slightly greasy donut! The fall colors are spectacular as well. The biggest drawback to the winter is the long stretches of cloudy days-winters are much easier to take if you can see the sun more often. The spring is quite striking when there is an explosion of green everywhere and all the flowering trees pop! Agreed on the car insurance-expensive with the "no-fault" designation.

Grew up in Michigan then moved to Jacksonville Florida to run a hotel for a few years. What I missed was the seasons. Yeah, it can be depressing in the winter when you get weeks at a time of clouds and darkness, but where can you go that has people turning their heat up in their cars in the spring so they can roll down the windows and crank the stereo.

Sorry if this rant may seem a little long, but I’d like to throw my two cents in. I left Michigan for Las Vegas in 2019 for a variety of reasons. One, I struggled fitting in, especially when it came to finding a job and a girl. It felt like I was treated as an idiot or a criminal when I really wasn’t. Second, I despised having four seasons and just wanted hit temperatures year round. Low and behold, I’m in a relationship and have a job in the field I want in Vegas. After leaving, I’ve heard many stories of fellow millennials from Michigan moving back. They left solid places like Tokyo, Colorado, and Florida. Would I consider doing the same thing? Never and here’s why.
One lingering issue that burns me up is how nothing gets fixed here. This is especially true with the roads, where only 19% of Michigan’s roads are in good condition. While I do admire how some residents have a positive outlook (including yours), I feel nothing is going to get done with deadbeat legislators. I completely lost faith when Michigan’s local politicians advocated for Robert Saleh to become the next Lions’ head coach rather than fix Flint’s infrastructure to give their residents clean water. I came back to visit last August to find it was pretty much the same old Michigan, complete with awful roads. One thing I also noticed is how much I paid in car insurance in Vegas compared to Michigan. My rate in Michigan? $200. My rate in Nevada? $113.
There’s also the weather here. Not everyone is well-suited for six months of winter! Some don’t mind triple-digit heat, especially since it makes for nice tanning weather! Nothing beats having to avoid the snow for the rest of your life, especially if you’re driving in it.
Another issue is the culture. One major caveat is how unhealthy the state is. Michigan is one of 12 states in America that have an adult obesity percentage over 35%, according to State of Childhood Obesity. While drinking soda pop and local craft beers with a coney dog and bumpy cake sounds nice, it can be devastating for your health down the road. Unfortunately, Michigan’s economic climate doesn’t make the situation better, especially when you’ve been reliant on just one industry. There have also been reports of the rise in hate groups, which is concerning. There’s even a report that said Michigan was the worst state for ghosting!
Finally, that leads to the major elephant in the room when it comes to living in Michigan: segregation. According to USA Today, Detroit (Warren & Dearborn included) is the second-most segregated city in America, with nearly 30% for their black poverty rate. Compare that to 10.2% for white people. In fact , Benton Harbor’s also in the top five, with a black poverty rate of 39% compared to only 11.4%. Many people from my generation talk about how Detroit’s on the comeback, but that’s mainly at the expense of the most vulnerable. Michigan is seen in two different worlds: One where African Americans have sadly little to no opportunities and the other being the “Michigan girl” marrying her well-off “prince” as they head off to their suburban kingdom. This couple often ignores the plights faced in Michigan’s most vulnerable areas, choosing to represent areas like Detroit from their suburb while never visiting the actual city itself. For example, one couple can open up a dance studio and just slap “Detroit” in its name while operating in Ferndale. Detroit doesn’t get a single dime in revenue from this. This needs to change, starting with an open dialogue.
This is not to say that Michigan’s entirely awful. There is the low cost of living along with being an excellent place for nonprofits, especially in animal care. There’s also the sports climate, which is world-renowned. The housing market is also extremely friendly, with prices being cheap compared to the rest of the country. So there are some bright spots.
However, It still doesn’t cover for everything bad happening at the moment. I didn’t have the best experience of living in Michigan. To me, Michigan is similar to an abusive alcoholic parent. It can be extremely abrasive, cold, and unwilling to change. While I admire the spirit that many of my fellow millennials carry regarding the state with Disney-esque enthusiasm, I feel it isn’t enough. With cultural problems, questionable parenting methods, growing segregation, and unpredictable weather, is it really worth moving here? I’d tell anyone that would ask me this, “No”, without any hesitation.
(I formally apologize if I was spoiling anything for any of you in the comments. I just wanted to chime in with my feelings on the matter!)

Jacob I’ve been thinking about moving to Las Vegas also and saying good bye to Michigan forever (except to visit my family), is the insurance in Michigan really higher than in LV? I’ve heard that it’s higher in LV because LV is a 24/7 drinking city so the rates are through the roof. If what you’re saying regarding car insurance is true, then leaving mich. for LV really is a no brainer lol. I hate the winters here, I also don’t care for fall. Spring is…ok, summer here is awesome. But our summer is like LVs fall/winter. I don’t think I’d mind the triple digit temps, but is it worth paying the high price for a home there in a safe neighborhood? Idk. What are the jobs like there? I make $23/hour in mich. and I’m living pretty good, supporting 3 kids and a stay at home mom (wife). I want to move out there so so bad, but I’m afraid I’d end up living in a tent in Naked city. So if you have any answers to my questions, I’d appreciate the hell out of it!

Great vids, Paul. I've been to Michigan quite a few times, mostly Metro D, and if you aren't looking for warm weather, Michigan has a lot of pros. While we all hear about the bad areas, the bottom line is great affordability, jobs, schools, and nature. Cato ranks MI 7th freest state! On a more dark humour note, 'll never forget in the 70s our family driving back to Canada from Florida on a grey March day and seeing on I-75 near the Rouge River industrial megalopolis there with purple factory smoke flying everywhere and dirty snow on the freeway shoulder, the whole place looking to my 11 year-old Canadian eyes to be a vision of Hell itself, some dude in a rust-and-bondo Econoline swerving to take an off ramp at the last minute and his differential catching the curb and scraping on it for 20 yards throwing sparks everywhere! I thought...now that's hardcore! That's Detroit Rock City right there! It was too cool. Now oddly, that stretch of the Fisher Freeway looks like a nature preserve because a lot of factories have closed down and/or the EPA has stopped them smoking. Hardly looks industrial there anymore. By comparison.

I want to thank you for the wonderful and entertaining videos that you have posted about living in Michigan. You were very helpful and instrumental while I was in the housing market.
It was through your videos (and one other significant persons videos) that I was able to understand some important aspects about the home buying process. The 2021 housing market was very tough and tougher for a V.A. buyer. Your videos helped me to understand how to navigate in that difficult market. One of the most important things that I learned in your videos is how Proposition A works.
I was able to ensure that my estimated escrow was closer to what the uncapped property taxes would be and avoid having a significant house note increase from underestimated property taxes in my closing disclosure. I think that your videos provide a wonderful and entertaining public service to prospective homebuyers.

The thing about weather in Michigan.. if it's your day off and it's raining, just look at the radar and drive an hour to where it isn't raining, preferable on a lake or river. I mean, unless you live in a big city where it takes an hour to drive from one end to the other, an hour's drive will usually take you to sunshine on water.

Weather in Michigan sucks the majority of the year. Summers are nice, but very short. Fall can be hit or miss, and winters last well into April. It's very rural and sedentary, unless you live near GR or Detroit. Not a great place for young single professionals. Jobs are mostly manufacturing blue collar and its hard to meet people. Most young professionals are married and have kids. The cost of living is pretty low, compared to most other parts of the country.

LOL …Everyone in Michigan loves to complain about the weather. That doesn’t matter about the season.
It is quite funny hearing someone from Detroit participate in this pastime because all in all the South East part of the state has quite mild weather.
The weather typically tracks west to east, and the lake effect from Lake Michigan is not as strong by the time tracks across the state.
Lately Michigan has been getting chunks of cold / warm weather. So the snow goes away quickly and the roads aren’t pre-treated for each snow. So the drives aren’t as safe as a region where snow lasts all season.
I have seen schools closed over a dusting because of it - climate change is real.

But I left about 10 years ago cause I spent about 6 months looking for a job to no avail. I think the cost of living is high to some of the people that live in MI cause most of the jobs there don't pay enough.
Also MI has some of the worse drivers ever which is probably why car insurance there is so high. I almost got side swiped on two separate occasions by people who weren't paying attention. Then last year, my siblings and I bought a new car for my mom who still lives there. Just to have a reckless teenager total her new car a few months later by ramming into the back of the car.
