Firmware updates for Canon are always fun. The R5 Mark II in a couple of years can be a wildly better camera. Just looking at where the R5 started and ended. I got the R1 the other day. I'm also looking to see how that camera transforms over the next few years via firmware.
Care to elaborate for someone who's currently owning the 5DM4 ans thinking about to get the R5M2? How do you mean by this would be a better camera in a few years? Also, could you provide some examples in terms for the R51 improvements over the years?
Thanks Simon, always appreciate your speedy news drops. Always happy to see bug fixes, even if most of the issues aren't things I've personally run into. Overall I feel like this was a much more polished camera out the gate at launch. I think my biggest disappointment (like most people) revolved around the battery limitations, so anything they can do to mitigate that further would be amazing. I've definitely had some odd behavior from the IBIS this time around when shooting video that I never experienced with the Mark I. I was actually just traveling in Japan about a week ago, shooting a lot of video content, and more than once I had the IBIS randomly jerk during a handheld static shot, effectively ruining the take and doing the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do. We aren't talking a little jerk either, this was a super noticeable movement of the sensor, so anything they can do to reduce the chances of that happening again I'd be a fan of. Some other things I'd really like to see addressed/added in firmware: 1.We need a better way of setting custom white balance. The current method is absolutely inexcusable at this point. Let me point the camera at something, hit a button, and take a custom white balance reading. Needing to switch to photo mode, take a photo, go into the menu to select that photo, and then switch the WB over to custom is just too many steps. I don't see why there can't be an option when switching to custom white balance to capture/apply a reading. 2. False color is effectively unusable in its current implementation, would love to see it be functional with view assist enabled, or be smart enough to disable view assist when toggled on. 3. Likewise, having waveforms is great, but its implementation leaves a lot to be desired. Even just having the ability to position where it is on screen or adjust its opacity would be a huge win. 4. Would love to have the ability to save more than 3 custom modes. When doing run and gun video I typically map C1 to 24fps, C2 to 60fps, and C3 to 120fps with the appropriate shutter speeds. This works great, but I would love 2 or 3 more custom modes to which I could map a RAW or 8k configuration to quickly switch to. This seems like it would be easy to implement. Having only 3 seems like an arbitrary and unnecessary limit. 5. Would love to see an expansion of what buttons can be customized to do specific functions. Again this seems like low hanging fruit. As far as I can tell this would be simple to implement, and when dealing with professional equipment the ability to customize the tool is king. 6. This one is random, but on the 5D IV in photo mode there was a way to bring up two photos side by side. I used this ALL THE TIME in my studio work to compare/reference previous shots to current ones. For some reason they removed this function on the R5 Mark I. I would absolutely love to have this feature back. 7. I'd love to see some refinement or user customizable way to set the LCD screen picture orientation. I frequently will have the LCD flipped out 90 degrees to the camera body when shooting with it at hip level, and the moment I want to tilt the screen back for better viewing, the picture orientation automatically flips itself upside down. It drives me crazy and leaves me with no way to view the LCD when standing on the side of the camera. 8. Really wish they would allow the 1/3 grid overlay to remain visible during video recording. Currently you can have it visible, but the moment you hit record it disappears. Having it there is incredibly helpful, and I can't think of a reason not to allow it during recording. 9. I'm still not totally happy with their AF subject locking during video. I know they added the ability to set subject detect AF to "detect only", and that's definitely a step in the right direction, but when tracking a subject that isn't human/animal/vehicle, the moment line of sight is broken, the camera abandons tracking that particular subject. Sony AF is sticky as all hell in this regard and will actually re-acquire tracked subjects when line of sight is re-established. I would absolutely love to see something similar here. 10. To my knowledge, this is the only item on this list that might actually be limited by hardware, but anything they can do to to increase the quality of the line skipped modes is always a plus. Not sure if you'll read this, and I don't know if you have any direct contacts at Canon, but if you do and get the chance to pass any of these along, you're a saint!
Thanks, got my R5 Mark II only 10 days ago and did have an issue installing this firmware update. Could only install with a single SD in the camera. Any attempts to install from CFexpress said the firmware was older than 1.0.1. Found this solution on the net. As fare as desired update they would be ability to assign a button to turn on and off pre-capture and away to modify frames in pre-capture similar to how Sony does it on the A1 II. Take care.
I still haven't done the first firmware update because my camera is running just fine for me and the way I use it. I'm not going to install this one either. Thanks, Simon!
I’d like to see pre-capture mappable to a button on the body. It’s ridiculous that you have to dig into a menu to enable/disable it. Would also like Canon to fix the hard buffer problem similar to the way Nikon and Sony handles it.
Completely agree this is a priority for the camera. Just lowering the bandwidth of new images captures while the buffer empties would be a step forward. We have to buy expensive cards to store images, and the camera doesn’t use the capacity of those chips.
I totally agree. Turning IBIS off at 35 millimeters and below would be a good choice. Give us the ability to decide whether we want to risk that or not. Your suggestion about more complex code is okay, but complex code has its own set of (potentially buggy) issues.
Thank you for the update but they need a 16th fix: They need to keep the camera from freezing while shooting. Mine freezes from time to time and I can’t do anything about it when it does. I turn it off and on and no effect - it stays on and frozen. I usually need to remove the batteries and reinsert them and then turn it on but it still takes a few seconds to recover. You just have to wait it out for about 10-15 seconds. I’m primarily a sports shooter and I’ve missed lots of shots because of this. When this happens with my R5, it clears up quickly by doing the battery removal hack. It’s kinda frustrating to just see the image frozen in the viewfinder when you’re trying to shoot. Oh well, I guess it’s just First World Problems when you pay close to $6,000.00 with all the extra stuff and taxes.
I had the same problem. And even taking the batteries out this never fix the problem. I had to send it to repair. I just had 3 months with it in in warranty time...
@ for me, it happens when I’m shooting sports on electronic at 30fps and I’m holding down the shutter button during a sequence of events. I’m not real certain what really causes it. Maybe I switch scenes too quickly without letting go of the button and the camera gets confused on what to focus on. Maybe it’s the camera’s way of telling me “whoa buddy, you’re confusing me, slow down a bit!”. Perhaps it’s just user-error on my part. I’ll experiment on it later tonight during a high school basketball game.
@@walkersunited332 I agree, with my R5 & R6, I get banding and distortion because of the rolling shutter in full electronic. However, in the R5ii with the faster readout speed, it’s either gone or unnoticeable at least to me. Therefore, now I can use electronic for sports and take advantage of the 30 fps without the fear of rolling shutter effects. Incidentally, my camera didn’t act up last night. However, I only used the RF 24-105 f/2.8. Tonight, I’ll try it outdoors with some Sigma & Canon EF lenses with the adapter to see if maybe that’s the issue. I know the issue has happened indoors and outdoors but I don’t remember which lens I was using.
Thanks for the overview Simon ! Looks from this list they didn't yet resolve the kinda freeze when returning to eyes to the EVF when it sometimes doesn't switch on EVF and the on the LCD only the horizon indicator is still moving. (reset via battery pull-out) For future firmwares, everybody would like oversampled 4k60, but Canon should also add some new functionalities to the MyMenu. Registering & recalling focus points can now only be done via a customized button, and the 200-800 does have a lens button ideal for registering the focus point, but the 100-500 is lacking this. recall FP I've set to the 'Set' button, but registering the FP is not urgent, so I'd rather do it via MyMenu. Note the FP is reset to infinity when swapping either glass or even batteries. Without such reset, I'd configure it once to like 6 or 7m. That would allow to quickly pull focus back when it suddenly jumped to the background, even when the background-affinity is much reduced over the R5. Same for activating&calibrating the eye-control AF mechanism. Only the actual use of eye location for AF is needed on a button. And I'm running out of easy accessible buttons 😛
I haven't had any issues with freezing since 1.0.1. It's worked vey well for me. The weather is cold but no snow and little opportunities to shoot. Winter is a slow time for me ;) This is something I have never done - register a focus button. Its how you spot a videographer over a photographer ;) One day I should do it as those buttons are going to waste.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker heheh, I started off with the settings from Jan Wegener, improved with some extra tweaks from Duade, and now I'm adding some extra things. When your birds come out of hibernation, feel free to ask me cam file with the settings. The register/recall focus didn't exist on earlier Canon bodies, and I guess it might be useful for video as well for pulling focus back when it wanders to the background. The AF finds it easier to focus on something farther away than to return to something closer which is out of focus. My freeze had nothing to do with temperature. Taking the eye of EVF for a break activates the LCD. after a while the LCD may turn a tad dimmer. When then returning to the EVF before it's really asleep, it's too sleepy to activate EVF and no buttons are working. Even when switching off, the LCD dully keeps updating the horizon angle. pretty odd, but the good old battery removal trick cures it.
My two issues are - i)failing to wake in cold weather and ii) screen stuck in off in custom mode that requires camera reset. I don't see either of these specifically fixed. But the 24fps in old battery could inadvertently fix the weather issue - hoping. And the not applying affects to custom mode might inadvertently solve the 2nd issue - hoping again.
There have been reports on other forums that the r5 II falsely reports exhausted batteries in low temperatures 32f and lower. I had this problem yesterday. Do you have news about this?
I was out in -18 yesterday and did not have an issue. I have not had an issue all winter so far, but will continue to test. I did not do anything to protect the batteries from the cold. I am using LP-E6P batteries with the CF cooling grip.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Yesterday at -20C, My friend with the R5 had no problem. But me with the battery grip BG-R20 with two LP-E6P. I get a message in red that the batteries are too low after the camera goes into pause mode. I replaced the batteries with LP-E6NH and the camera restarted but after a while without shooting it went back into pause mode and the low battery message came back. Back home the batteries on my charger were all fully charged. I'm not the only one on the net with this problem on the net. Thanks for your inerest in this issue.
Hi Simon, love your channel by the way, I'm having trouble opening the latest firmware update for the R5 ii. The zip files only open the update procedure and just copy the fir file as the original zip file, anybody else reporting this problem. I'm in the UK.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Thanks for the quick reply Simon, I downloaded the Windows version from the Europe site but the zip file won't open it just copies the fir file? I'll try again later, the update isn't that crucial for me anyway, Happy Christmas. Clive Wood
Hey there. Have a strange issue with my R5 II, when I take a photo and review the image, it mostly comes up with the previous image, not the one I just took. Thanks.
Simon, I think that you should be sure to limit your suggestion for the IBIS wobble fix to the video mode. There are still a few of us old fashioned stills photographers who want the IBIS in wide angle mode . That’s especially true in low light levels. I know that the focus of your channel is mainly video but the cameras are hybrids and fixing your video IBIS wobble needs to not hurt stills photographers by shutting off functionality that we need. Thanks for all you do and Hope that you and your family have a Very Blessed and Merry Holiday Season!!!
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Thanks Simon!!! That doesn’t always come across in the videos. I think that a firmware setting to turn IBIS off in the body at a specific focal length would be very easy to implement. Adjusting the IBIS while zooming would be a lot more difficult. Maybe allowing the user to turn it 0n/off for a specific user specified focal length in menu would be a good compromise?
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker , You do a great job and service. I’m enjoying my original R5 for my portraits and events which are mostly Church Service related. At $2400 and no tax it was a bargain. FYI it came from Canada in just two days. I’m using fast SD and CF express cards . For me 256 GB SD cards for jpgs and 512 GB CF express cards for raw are working well. I usually don’t need the high frame capture rates but I am not seeing banding if I stay at 1/125 s and only a tad at 1/160 s. For most of my work I can simply use 1/125 s
@ no for what ever reason canon do not let you have Lens IS on without IBIS. If you accidentally turned your lens IS off it also turns ibis off. This has caught me out a few times. Very frustrating. It’s either all or nothing.
My R5 II doesn't want to update. It says on the memory card the firmware file is older than 1.0.1 :( I tried downloading from two sources, but it still had the same effect.
Canon please add/fix - 4K oversampled 60 - map pre shooting to a custom button - hard buffer stop or make the buffer work better if raw to cf and only jpeg to sd - improve noise if at all possible - add on the display the fps next to the H+, H etc so we know what fps we are at not that you can set them all to different values - make c1, c2, c3 modes labeled to alpha names that a user can type in. Ie birds, sports, action etc - make the custom AF settings to a button so they can be toggled. IE if you have different saved setting for sports you can toggle them. - make picture profiles custom named I got some more but we can talk later.
Please voice the problem associated with the Attenuator in new cameras. I've been using Canon cameras for video for the past 15 years. When I bought the Canon R6 Mark II, R5 Mark II, I was very surprised by the fact that an incredibly useful function such as Attenuator was removed from the sound settings. She helped me out a lot. Especially when shooting reportage videos in automatic mode. When it is not possible to control the sound in real time. I use on-camera microphones such as the Rode Videomic NTG. And with the Attenuator function turned off, it starts producing background noise. An attenuator corrected this problem. Please tell me, is it possible to expect the return of this incredible feature in subsequent software updates of the camera?
One issue I have with the R5M2 (and others have reported it in various Facebook groups too) with firmware version 1.0.0 is when shooting in complete darkness for astrophotography or aurora borealis, I can not see ANYTHING either on the LCD or viewfinder, making it absolutely impossible to frame the shot correctly and to focus. No matter how long I set the shutter speed or how high I crank the ISO up, I can not see anything except a massive disgusting mess of digital noise... So I'm wasting a lot of precious time adjusting my composition and focus blindly, taking tons of test shots before I can get something good. I did NOT have that problem with my R6 Mark II. The exposure simulation worked and allowed me to get a reasonable preview of the final result before taking the photo. I still haven't updated to firmware version 1.0.1 or 1.0.2, but I sure hope this is fixed, even though it's not mentioned in any of the fixes listed. P.S. When shooting at night I'm using the RF 16mm f/2.8 if it matters. And I mean in complete darkness, not shooting a bright cityscape at night!
I tried taking a Milky Way photo and all I saw was noise and I think hot pixels. So couldn’t tell if it’s a camera issue like what you’re talking about or there’s something wrong with the sensor
That's a lot of updates in a short period of time, some of them would appear to be fairly complicated fixes. It's hard not to wonder if they were working on some of them when the camera was released. It's a very competitive industry, and I understand the desire for getting a camera to market at certain times. But from experience, I have little experience for releasing a product with known bugs. Of course we don't know that happened in this case, but there is good reason to suspect it. Still, better to have fixes than not have them.
My camera goes into sleeping mode and when something is happening it's impossible to wake up. On and off switch not working. Need to open up an remove battery. This has happened lots of times and has missed lots of moments because of it. Also while looking st pictures at the screen it sometimes freezes and need to remove battery. Had some freeze when I got my new R6 five years ago but got fixed in a firmware probably. Hopefully Canon adresses this problem or I'll have to get a new camera 🙈😅
There are always more fixes than listed in the release notes. If you are not affected by anything in the release notes, there's no harm in waiting. If it ain't broke, don't fix it ;)
The windows version works fine. Just unzip it by double-clicking not he file and copy the fir file to the storage card and update. That's all there is to it. The only difference between windows and Mac version is the container.
Greetings from Germany! I got the update on the support side of CANON germany. I had the Problem, that i coud not install it from my cf-express card. I got the message "Firmware on the card ist older than installed firmware 1.0.1" In a Gerrman Forum I found, that it is only possible to install the update from an SD-Car. Thar worked actually - very stranmge phenomen... Till now, I didn*t notice any (other) gliches in the update, Greetings Wolfram
I am trying to install from the (freshly initialized) SD card and it does not work. (with the same error message). EDIT: it worked when I removed the CF-Express card and soley used the SD card.
I had the same problem, and discovered that it's related to having two cards in the camera. Mine installed from the CF-Express card, but only if the SD card was removed.
One enhancement I would like is for the fan in the cooling grip to only run as fast as a necessary, instead of having to choose a Fixed speed "fast" or "Medium".. "Fast" is considerably noisier than "medium"; but the camera will overheat if I run 8k oversampled 4K to the CF-B card at medium , but won't overheat at fast, for segment times of around an hour.
Be careful, the update was performed with my 24-70 lens attached and it ruined the lens and z Canon refused to fix trying to charge me 1300$. It also happened to another owner I know.
I will only but the camera when i can use the older batteries with pre capture like the R6ii. Don’t care if they drain faster than the new ones. It’s just a money grab!
I desperately want the electronic level to be made available in the view finder as it is in the R5. Every time I want to shoot buildings etc I put the R5 mark II away and get out my older trusty R5 mark I because it works.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker RF lens with IS allow you to turn it off. That makes me think there is maybe a workaround or compensation going on with lens IS and IBIS together.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker the IBIS control in the camera only works for non-stabilized lenses. In fact, the R5 II's user guide says the following at the beginning of the IS menu description: "This menu is displayed for configuration of camera IS mode settings when you are using a non-IS lens. With IS-equipped lenses, setting the lens Image Stabilization switch to combines stabilization by the lens and camera." When you mount a stabilized lens, the IS menu is grayed out. All Canon bodies with IBIS work like this.
I would like to see Canon bring a new camera onto the market that is really finished and does not have to be completed over years with firmware updates
I downloaded but when I get the screen that asks to update 1.0.1 to 1.0.2 the camera freezes and I have to shut it off to get control back. I went to the Canon US site and the update isn't there.
So they are not planing at all on giving us 1080p/4k 60fps with the NH batteries that the R5 could easily do...? Canon should stop looking up to apple as a business model, it won't end well.

I haven't had any issues with freezing since 1.0.1. It's worked vey well for me. The weather is cold but no snow and little opportunities to shoot. Winter is a slow time for me ;)
This is something I have never done - register a focus button.
Let's see if the first one is better.
I would like to see the wave form a little bigger like maybe 50%. or an option to have a bigger one.
I still can't use any batteries other than the e6p batteries. e6nh batteries give me a blank screen when I power up.
Hi Simon, love your channel by the way, I'm having trouble opening the latest firmware update for the R5 ii. The zip files only open the update procedure and just copy the fir file as the original zip file, anybody else reporting this problem. I'm in the UK.
You're the first to mention this. When I did the update, I downloaded the windows version on macOS and copied the fir file over no issues.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker
Thanks for the quick reply Simon, I downloaded the Windows version from the Europe site but the zip file won't open it just copies the fir file? I'll try again later, the update isn't that crucial for me anyway, Happy Christmas. Clive Wood
Hey there. Have a strange issue with my R5 II, when I take a photo and review the image, it mostly comes up with the previous image, not the one I just took. Thanks.
Simon,
I think that you should be sure to limit your suggestion for the IBIS wobble fix to the video mode.
I am referring to video mode only Robert. I see no reason to change this for stills mode.
Yeah, It's something I have to work on. It might be obvious to me what I am talking about, but then after the fact I realize erred ;)
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker ,
You do a great job and service.
Let us use lens IS only without ibis that solve the issue with ibis wobble
I would have thought if we turned off IBIS in camera, the lens would still work... I have to try that out.
@ no for what ever reason canon do not let you have Lens IS on without IBIS.
If you accidentally turned your lens IS off it also turns ibis off. This has caught me out a few times. Very frustrating. It’s either all or nothing.
And “experts” argued with me to their grave that 24fps wasn’t possible with the R5ii. Now where’s 60/120 on 1080p…
Yeah it was nonsense. All one had to do is look at the R5 MK1 to see what is possible ;)
err70 still after new firmware(
Pre capture on one Button on /off 🥰🙈
Being able to assign that would be nice
My R5 II doesn't want to update. It says on the memory card the firmware file is older than 1.0.1 :( I tried downloading from two sources, but it still had the same effect.
same thing happens to me
Might be out first issue. Contact Canon Support and let us know what they say.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Canon Polish support is rather poor. I will wait until I can download it from the EU Canon website and try again.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Removing the SD Card resolved the issue. The card was empty.
Canon please add/fix
- 4K oversampled 60
- map pre shooting to a custom button
- hard buffer stop or make the buffer work better if raw to cf and only jpeg to sd
- improve noise if at all possible
- add on the display the fps next to the H+, H etc so we know what fps we are at not that you can set them all to different values
- make c1, c2, c3 modes labeled to alpha names that a user can type in. Ie birds, sports, action etc
- make the custom AF settings to a button so they can be toggled. IE if you have different saved setting for sports you can toggle them.
- make picture profiles custom named
I got some more but we can talk later.
Certains ont remarqué une réduction du bruit, qu’en est il ?
Where’s the variable time setting in pre-burst mode?
Yes, a nice feature to add.
@OrdinaryFilmmaker a must, considering Sony also has it.
When I try to install it it says it's older then old version
same here
This download don't work for me. I'll wait until it show's on the canon website on this side.👍
Battery fix! Yay 😁
More to go I hope.
When I use e6nh batteries after applying the update, I get a blank screen - batteries other than e6p still not working for me.
The firmware is not on the canon website on this side of the planet ( Not yet . I try your link....👍 Thanks
Is it really much better then the original R5? Im still very happy with the R5, and it has still the same resolution....
And the old one has better high ISO noise and DR
Should ypu update if you don't have any of the bug issues?
There are always more fixes than listed in the release notes. If you are not affected by anything in the release notes, there's no harm in waiting. If it ain't broke, don't fix it ;)
Do you know of a Mac version?
The windows version works fine. Just unzip it by double-clicking not he file and copy the fir file to the storage card and update. That's all there is to it. The only difference between windows and Mac version is the container.
Not available here but already updated.
Till now, I didn*t notice any (other) gliches in the update,
Greetings Wolfram
I am trying to install from the (freshly initialized) SD card and it does not work. (with the same error message). EDIT: it worked when I removed the CF-Express card and soley used the SD card.
I had the same problem, and discovered that it's related to having two cards in the camera. Mine installed from the CF-Express card, but only if the SD card was removed.
Same problem here Firmware from Canon Denmark... Damn
Solved! Remove the SD card
They need to put the abitlity to choose raw files to use on multiple exposure, like 5D Mark II does. So we can choose and export to CR3 files, not JPG
An auto mode would be nice - auto meaning turning off when filming and auto on standby.
R1 update just released
Thank you
Pretty much the same updates here except obviously the battery fix.
looks like update is not for me - only network and video fixes.
I desperately want the electronic level to be made available in the view finder as it is in the R5. Every time I want to shoot buildings etc I put the R5 mark II away and get out my older trusty R5 mark I because it works.
Einstellfehler...
I would like the ability to turn off IBIS and use optical stabilization only. I thought that was going to be standard.
Exactly! There’s no reason Canon can’t allow this.
@@drummerg3331 the sensor always floats I heard. Panasonic is the only company I heard that actually locks the sensor.
IBIS can be turned off, but it depends on the lens you are using. It's odd.
In fact, the R5 II's user guide says the following at the beginning of the IS menu description:
"This menu is displayed for configuration of camera IS mode settings when you are using a non-IS lens. With IS-equipped lenses, setting the lens Image Stabilization switch to combines stabilization by the lens and camera."
When you mount a stabilized lens, the IS menu is grayed out. All Canon bodies with IBIS work like this.
I would like to see Canon bring a new camera onto the market that is really finished and does not have to be completed over years with firmware updates
I kind of look forward to this updates Leo ;)
hey ppl ... the firmware works fine ? no any issues ? or bugs?
get me posted ok ?
None on mine so far. Update was smooth.
Looks like the firmware is now gone off Canons site
nope. its there
You can always turn IBIS off yourself ! you can even have a button to do it.
Unfortunately it's only for Windows at that link
I would recommend you use the Canon site in your locale. The UK version auto detects the OS
Not true. download and unpack the windows version - it's the same file. MacOS has no issues opening zip files - that is how I did it.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Thanks. I'll do that. Much appreciated.
I downloaded but when I get the screen that asks to update 1.0.1 to 1.0.2 the camera freezes and I have to shut it off to get control back. I went to the Canon US site and the update isn't there.
Looks like Canon has a lot of involuntary testers out there. Madness at this purchase price... 🥴
What a waste of update. Where is shutter angle or maybe a 6K raw instead 8k 😢😢😢😢
Its a housekeeping update
They should have removed the recording time limit too.
What time limit?
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Oh DUH... I'm thinking MK I; not MK II. My bad.
So they are not planing at all on giving us 1080p/4k 60fps with the NH batteries that the R5 could easily do...? Canon should stop looking up to apple as a business model, it won't end well.
They clearly need to support the older batteries better
Still talking about Error 70 and we are almost in 2025… why Canon cameras always looks like it’s put to market in beta test?
