- Continuing our barn door/ambulance door/swing out door installation on our Toyota FJ62 Land Cruiser. This week we’re tackling drilling out the holes for the hinges. Not as easy as it sounds.

We had to get our doors from Australia. They weren’t available in the US either.
Wow! I like where it’s headed. That’s so much effort grafting those doors on there, but it’ll be so worth it! I remember when I was in high school, my parents special order a 1999 Yukon because that was the only way they could get it with barn doors, as not a single dealer near us thought about carrying inventory with anything but the lift gate/Tail gate combo. Apparently they thought people would be more irritated with having their rear vision out the back obstructed by the center pillars, than by having to become an American Ninja Warrior contestant to get their gear in and out. Apparently we’d rather have our vehicles be less useful than go through the hassle of learning how to use our side mirrors!
Hiii! Yup, we don’t like taking the easy route for some reason 🤷🏻♂️.
Can you believe dealers still go the same route even today? Crazy.
@@NomadEffect Right, but then they would miss out on all that margin that comes from selling you all those ridiculously marked-up options that no one actually “needs.”
On that point, I have no idea why, but I’ve been watching the new LR Defenders available in the US an not one I’ve seen so far needed most of the $30-40k in options they’re pre-packaged with.
@@NomadEffect Nope, they don’t. It’s insane the useless stuff people will buy and rarely, if ever, need.

How about the hinges you took off the liftgate and tailgate. Maybe they're the same size and could be used on the barn doors?
I checked this out during the week. Unfortunately they’re way different and the pins are too small to transfer over. I reached out to cruiserparts.net and they said that FJ40 front door pins should fit after being modified as well as the brass bushings that are made to upgrade the FJ40 hinges. So I’m thinking I’ll have to try that.
