I know this is what a lot of health advocates and doctors say, "That it all starts in the kitchen" and perhaps that's mostly true. But for myself I don't see it that way. When I got back to regular riding on a road bike, with a lot more time and milage from ramping that up, and riding all through winter last year, that's where I really starting getting it back. My diet has always been pretty good, pretty healthy all my life. Always balanced, always with the fruit and vegetables, never stopped drinking milk, hardly any hangups on food, never was picky or allowed to be, etc. But I did get too heavy in the last ten years all the way up to 195 (for 5' 11") pounds for a few years, then corrected to 185 lbs. after starting riding again. I was fitter and better off, but it wasn't enough. In 2023, when I ramped up on it, then it was enough. When I hit 160 lbs. again after nine months, I stopped any tiny restrictions. When I got to 11 stone, I got back to some running. I got back down to under 150 lbs. (165 in high school) eventually, with a proper cyclist's form. I see that as the bulk of it since there was very little changed with my eating habits. Mosty a temporary cutting out of pizza, less starch, a wee bit more for both fruit and vegetables, more oats and grits and cereal, rice (or similar) more often, fish more often, etc. I never saw that as "dieting" either. Just an slightly altered diet. But all of that I ate and liked all my life, and I've always been healthy. Covid was a joke to me, and it overlapped five and a half years without even a cold. Hadn't had the flu since the early 80s. Never took a China Flu jab. Not once.

Ah, yes, Jack Lalane quote! I remember seeing him on tv, since I'm now 71, seen it all! Blessed to be married to Mr. Right for 43 years, I still play racquetball nearly every day, lift weights, StairMaster, etc. Our gym is 4 min from our house, lol, so, no excuse!

Jack La Lane was fun to watch when I was really little. All that "one, two, one, two" stuff from the strong man in tights.

It's true about weight loss starting in the kitchen. My favorite diet merely utilizes portion control. Years ago there was a thing called the DASH diet. I was schooled in that because I am at a higher risk for Type II. All I did was follow the proper portion amounts of proteins, carbs, & veggies I put on my plate and the weight literally fell off. These days I eat as healthy as possible, I still practice portion control, and it still works.

Great advice. I just wanted to add that I have read that it is best to stay away from alcoholic beverages, especially beer, because beer increases estrogen levels, hence causing pot bellies. It is also best to not have too much stress in life because that can increase cortisol levels, which can cause a person to have a fat face and bulge in other areas.

I started to look at the additives listed in processed foods and I have just started and I am up to 22 different items…hard to avoid them. Read labels folks and I agree with you Adam, just eat real food and never mind special diets…you need to make whatever you do your lifestyle.

I have hypothyroidism. Many high fiber foods and vegetable interfere with or block thyroid hormones

Actually they have done a study on the 10,000 steps... It turned out that it's correct. But there is a difference. Over the course of walking the 10,000 steps you have to slowly increase your pace and get to a high at least half way through.
Also it was found more than 10,000 steps didn't lead to better outcomes.

I’ve had good luck with a $25 smart scale that measures a dozen different things including visceral fat, and a free app that makes calorie counting easy.

Nonsense. No carbs required for training at all. That’s a myth.

I’m the person that needs to lose and not gain. But I am losing fat and also gaining a little muscle. So I’ve learned something through the years… and I played football for 11 years and then was a distance runner for almost 10 years. What I’ve found most important is what you’re eating and being healthy. Stay away from sugar and refined carbs and highly processed foods. Eat more protein and vegetables. Eat at least an ounce of protein for every pound of your goal weight. Make sure you drink plenty water. Do both cardio and strength training, if you can. But don’t go crazy on either, especially cardio.
