How to replace your aging Garmin Fenix 5X Battery

- Note: Isopropyl Alcohol is likely better for dealing with glue than gentle/gradual warming.
Note 2: Since the making of this video, I have heard of Garmin servicing older Fenix watches.
A month ago I replaced my 50% health Garmin battery with an Aliexpress Garmin replacement. I bought the watch back in 2017. The replacement probably had 80-85% health remaining. Today I replaced it again with a so called "upgraded" battery. Time will tell if the latest battery actually is 600 mAh. My guess is that it's probably not since they're about the same size and chemistry. I'll post an update either way. Hopefully you'll find this useful. The video is a little disorganized and extemporaneous as it's difficult to focus on tiny parts and explain things.
You'll need a small precision screwdriver set that has multiple sizes. My set is unlabeled so I'm not sure what the screw sizes were unfortunately.
Update: Using isopropyl alcohol to remove the original battery's adhesive may be a wise idea instead of gentle warming and prying.
Please send me a message if you try this out and it works. I'm really curious how many people are having the same issue and were about to get rid of their watch.

When you want a good seal. Clean the groove a cotton swab with some isopropyl alcohol, or any 70% alcohol. Try to work jn a dust free environment.
Most importantly use vaseline or a silicone sealing grease also used for diving equipment. Only use it on the seal. Great video by the way.
Interesting; thank you. I pinned your comment so people are aware of having a clean seal.
Great video! I just replaced the battery on my Fenix 5x as I followed along with your video. You nicely pointed to all the tricky spots, including starting from the front instead of the back. I ordered the original battery with tools on eBay for about $26 and had no problems with just the tools included. I was able to slowly and patiently pry the battery off with the spludging tool from the kit. I did clean the mating surfaces of the face and add a little silicon grease to the gasket. I'm confident enough to go swimming with this watch to the original depth. And you don't have to worry about an explosion from the old battery. I took a gasket scraping tool to the battery and couldn't even get a spark out it. It got a little warm after I punctured the battery with many large slits.
nice job Jim. glad to hear your success story.
Could you share the link, or share the list of tools and parts you used please?
Great video! A note for anyone doing this replacement on a Fenix 5, not a 5X like this video is for, you'll want to open the case from the BACK, not the front

Replace battery
Just finished replacing my battery & found the instructions very helpful.
Thanks
Very cool Delroy. Nice work. Hopefully this saves you a lot of money.
Thanks, really helpful for my battery change. Only thing I can add. I droppered IPA (iso propyl alcohol) in between the battery and sticky pad to soften the adhesive. It worked well.
good. yeah that was a trick I wish I knew before I started lol
Replaced my battery following the video, worked great! Not on the battery cable - just remember the positive red cable goes toward the center, then you don't need to look for any connector details. My battery came out easily... leaving the sticky stuff and the wrapper of the battery behind. But that was pretty easy to get off too, so all in all it took about 30 minutes. Thanks!!!
Excellent work. I love hearing stories like this. Congrats on the successful tear down. I hope you learned as much as I did wit this. Awesome!
Thank you. My back sensor was cracked (it's a thin plastic that covers the sensor) and I couldn't keep wearing at work because the dish detergent gets in the cracks and irritated my skin. Anyhow thanks for this video, it's very good and at reboot on my watch, I didn't mess it up!!
Well done one the best explained and professionally done video I have seen . You are credit to UA-cam

Nice Helped me replacing the battery, got an used Fenix 5x from ebay for 65 Euro, in good condition only the battery wasnt that good anymore so replaced it with a new one for 12 Euro and the Watch is as good as new
Thank you, replaced my battery and very happy to breath new life into my old friend!
awesome
Thank you for this very good guide. The battery was very difficult to remove. I carefully warmed it up a bit with a hairdryer (carefully!!!). The glue then softened and the battery could be removed. Clock is running perfectly again. Greetings from Germany Dirk
Dirk, I am very glad you worked out the issue. Good job! I wish I would have used isopropyl alcohol like other commenters did. Good call on hairdryer.
Nice video. I had a Garman 5 which the battery had deteriorated to only hold a charge for three days. I ordered the new battery and disassembled my watch to discover the glue backing to the battery had "melted" and run all over the connections. The battery connector was glued to the ribbon to the point that it tore despite my best efforts to slowly pry it free. Garmin does not replace the batteries leaving us, the consumer, to do our best to perform watch repairs on our kitchen tables. My watch went into the trash and I'll never buy another Garmin product again.
Sorry to hear that. I put a note and pinned a comment about Isopropyl alcohol for dealing with the glue... read your comment and added a caption as well. If the caption ends up working and appearing in the video, maybe the next person with glue troubles might have better luck. These are honestly quite risky to service.
@@thermodynamical5635 The glue that melted on to the interior surfaces made it impossible to remove the factory battery connector from the ribbon without damage. As a footnote I've worked on electronic gear for years and this was like super glue was poured into it. As stated the watch went into the trash that day. I thank you for the video and the directions but sometime bad things happen.
@@williamjasper6509 Oh wow. Okay I see what you're saying; makes sense. Good grief that's bad. I should consider myself pretty lucky then. I don't think you're the only one who has mentioned troubles like that either. Best of luck William.
Thank you very much for your video. My Garmin Fenix 5X turn off and I coudn´t restart or recharge it. SO I opend the Watch and saw a the accu, looks like a ballon. Now it´s clear. I need a new accu. Hopefully it´s only the broken accu.
Greadings from Germany
Hi PaulusMG; I hope you are able to fix it and the accu swelling did not snap any circuit board components.
lucky I found your channel. I was about to bid on a Fenix5x, but now I'm a bit doubtful. I don't want to change batteries as well as pay for a watch.
You can use Precision Electronic Cleaning Solvent / Contact Cleaner from Mechanic brand to remove the battery so easily dan quickly. Just spray it in the bottom of the battery that is sticky, and than you can pull up the battery. This Contact cleaner is safe for your electronic component. It can be used to cleaning corrotion in the circuit board.

Hi, Great video! Thank you very informative, I am planning to get hsabat 600maH battery. Would you recommend this? how does it hold so far after replacing it? And how many hours is the battery life for 600maH? Thanks!
I Just changed the battery but from the back. Much easier and it works
Hi
Backplate stuck or not?
Great stuff! I just followed this video and replaced the battery in my Fenix 5X with one I bought via eBay for $30 - way better than shelling out for a new watch. Be careful tightening the screws - I managed to snap one of them. Luckily, it was one of the pair on the upper right of the watch, so I'm hopeful it will soldier on!
Good advice... I was pretty concerned about screw snapping myself. My backside screws felt impossibly stuck so I had to go through the front.
Great video, thank you. What type of glue should be used in these applications? (i.e. so that it can be dissolved with isopropyl alcohol)
I am not sure Tim.
Thanks for the tutorial. Any reason you didn'y go in from the back of the watch? Thanks!
5:50 that film you speak of, it sounds like the waterproofing material, was it that?
Hi Lokesh thanks for asking. I do not remember what the material was for (it was a while ago), but it was not for waterproofing.
In my opinion, the garmin's main line of defense from water is how good of condition the outer o-ring is in. That outer ring, kept clean and free of debris, combined with screws kept snug and tight, are what provide the main defense from water.
👍 thk for tutorial. Done in 15mn. Hope the seal will last!
impressive. nice work
Good video & the biggest thing I took away from it was "patience", haha.
My Fenix 3 HR Sappire is just 4 years old & the battery's shot now, going from 5-6 days to about 8-9 hours - a transition that took about 3 days to happen. Garmin were less than helpful & of course want us to purchase their next generations. Like you though, I don't think they should be consumables, especially given the high initial costs.
So I'm going to invest in a replacement battery & give it a try - what's the worst that could happen, right? :)
Thanks for sharing.
You'll probably do well. I wonder if there's some decent Fenix 3 HR take apart videos out there if the fenix 5 ends up being much different than yours.
did it end up going okay? my battery still feels brand new
@@thermodynamical5635 Sadly not
My Fenix 5X battery just went dead. What battery/brand did you purchase, and are you still happy with it?
I don't have a recommendation unfortunately. My battery does still work, but the aliexpress listing is long gone. Try searching around for the part numbers on that site for a newer listing. Honestly aliexpress is generally a crapshoot but I'm hoping you'll find an updated one. These watches are getting really old now lol.
@thermodynamical5635 thank you for the reply. I just called Garmin to see what they would say. Obviously they don't support because it is so old, but would give me 20% off a Fenix 7 PRO, and would have to wait until Nov timeframe for discount on the 8 series. Looking at videos to decide. I will probably just try my luck with a battery for the 5X first. Thank you again. Great instructional video by the way.
@@chuckw1566 I totally recommend toying with your 5X before pulling the trigger on a new one, especially if you like tinkering and it's kaput anyway. I had fun and learned a lot. These are pricey lol.

Thanks for the tutorial. I changed my battery but I have a little problem. When the Garmin reach the half battery says that the battery is empty, go to +-50% directly to 0%. When I charge I need only 130 mAh to load the battery. What can I do? Thanks
Forgive me, I am having trouble understanding your statement. Are you saying that you charge your battery, you use it for awhile, it eventually goes to 50% remaining, then immediately after it reaches the 50%, the battery dies and goes to 0%? If that is the case, I wonder about two things:
1) Is one of your connections high resistance or not plugged in all the way?
2) is your battery a dud in general?
Otherwise, I do not have any good ideas... I am definitely not an expert nor an electrical engineer.
I will also add that it sounds like in general, you had partial success because your watch actually turned on and stayed on for awhile indicating you did your disassembly and reassembly fairly well. Good job on that. But yeah let me know your thoughts.
@@thermodynamical5635 the fènix works perfect but when t'he battery reach 50% or a little less he thinks that is 0%. I think ist a software problem, when I changed the old battery was on + - 50%. I did a hard reset and now Im waiting a few days. Sorry for my Bad english

@thermodynamical haha I thought so. Tbh I was incredibly impressed with it. From the day I bought until this week it has maintained 1-2 weeks battery life utilizing the strength function with no GPS and then the running and hiking functions with GPS for several days a week. It's seen the life of an infantry marine with the band being the only thing I ever replaced. Very impressive watch. It would be hard to convince me that there's something better.

what watch face did you have on your watch? It looks pretty cool.
Ironic, but I rarely use the watch much anymore since I'm involved with electrical work. completely forgot how I got that face.
I have a Fenix 5x from 2017. It died on 5/24. I bought a battery on Aliexpress, which is working perfectly, as I tested it with a multimeter. I installed it, and still, the clock is dead. I'm done with Garmin.
Sorry to hear that. Have you reached out to Garmin? I've heard that since making this video they may have support for replacing the batteries now.
Changed the battery in my fenix5x. No probs. On the charger all well. When I disconnect from the power cord it turns off. Any ideas? Nothing is pinched.
I have no idea. I wonder if you unplug your battery connector and replug it in if that helps. It sounds like your battery is not part of the circuit at the moment. Does your battery by itself have a voltage?
Did you resolve this issue @kylerobertson3585 ? Im having the same issue
If fenix 5 cannot turn on ,.mostly was it because of battery ? But when charging there was sound, but display still black😬

I did it, however, after replacement, I only can start the watch by connecting the charger cable, and the starting button doesn't work. After disconnecting the charging cable the watch switches off immediately. It seems as if the battery is not connected. Any idea?
It sounds like there's a possibility you have a connection issue between your battery and battery wires, your battery wires and board, or a ribbon cable is not seated properly. You may have to take a voltage reading at the end of your battery wires and see if you get anything. It sounds like its a working watch and you its either an issue with your battery or battery connection as you suggested. If you figure it out, please reply so other people are aware.
@@thermodynamical5635 How can I test the voltage, the connection is sooo tiny!
I haven't had a look in a couple years so I'm honestly not sure, but on that plastic connector at the end of the battery wire I wonder if you can use DMM with clips on a thin needle or something if you're super careful but I am definitely not an expert to speak on that @@markus7894

if its in good shape and lightly used thats a great price although you could probably haggle down a little
In the USA on amazon type websites, one can buy amazon "renewed" 5X's for ($320) 275 euro before taxes. "used" are ($280) 240 euro. Depending on your country's taxes, you may be able to find a deal a bit cheaper than 300 euro. As for the 6X pro, I have no idea how much better they are or what additional features are worth it. Hopefully whatever you decide on lasts a very long time.

After the battery replacement the watch it still gonna be waterproof?
Hi Pier. I posted a second video of it in water. I have only swam with it. I have not gone scuba diving. Nice video! Did you have a chance to estimate new battery live (with 660 mAh capacity)? Was it worth to use bigger one?
The new battery works good. I’m getting 17-18 days from it. I feel that this just about matches (but does not exceed) the original battery’s rating. As usual, sellers on Aliexpress exaggerate ratings. Although I was hopeful for a small increase, it doesn’t surprise me the new battery doesn’t have 660 mAh worth of storage. Claiming that massive capacity increase for something that takes only a slightly larger volume than the original seemed suspicious. Watch is still waterproof and working great otherwise.

Replaced battery, after charging for 10 min I was excited to see the green lights lite up at hr monitor .. I notice the screen was blank when powered up. Screen still blank after charging for 2 hours. Any idea on what could be this issue? Thanks for the video.

@@thermodynamical5635 yes it was.. I notice I had pinched the ribbon cord and didn’t realize it. I have another screen on order.
@@briancifreo3214 I am sorry to hear about that. Hopefully the screen replacement works too. This stuff can be so delicate, difficult to repair, and unforgiving to work with. I hope that for every person that makes a small mistake with the replacement, dozens more are successful. If even 1% of the viewers here successfully repaired their watches, that's probably five figures of DIY savings.
I’m looking at buying a second hand 5x in a few days. What are the chances of me having to do this batt upgrade?
How old is it?
@@thermodynamical5635 3 years!
I am certainly not an expert. I've changed two batteries and that's about it, but if you had me take a wild guess about what % of it's life is left after 3 years, I would guess 80% +-10% of it's original capacity remains. Probably a useless answer. I guess you could download one of those battery monitoring apps from the IQ store and see what it says after a week or so. I would say it's worth risking to replace it if it's 6-12 months of age worse than that.
is it possible to change the battery in a garmin tactix charlie?

Hi, for a garmin fenix 5 Plus, which battery works?. From the link that you provide in the video, it will work with 361-00097-00 Fenix 5? or 361-00098-00 Fenix 5X? Thanks!
361-00098-00 is for the fenix 5x. It looks like the second link no longer works. I think for the fenix 5X, the top link is best. I do not know about compatibility with garmin models other than the 5X unfortunately. If the fenix 5 plus is equal in size as the fenix 5X, my guess is that the battery in the top link will fit okay. From what I have read online, the biggest complaint about aftermarket batteries is that they can be sometimes too big to fit in the watch housing.
If you have a Fenix 5 you will want the 361-00097-00 battery.
The Fenix 5s uses 361-00096-00 and the Fenix 5x uses 361-00098-00 (as mentioned by the helpful original poster!)
I can confirm (after literally just now swapping a replacement) that 361-00096-00 worked correctly for my Garmin Fenix 5s Plus Sapphire. It's also a much easier installation than the 5X appears to require (I had no need to heat my battery for instance). I was able to find elsewhere that 361-00098-00 *only* fits the 5X sized watches.
Wondering if the replacement battery is performing as well or the original battery.

How do you determine what the remaining battery life actually is?
Good question. It's a total estimate. I remember my watch used to have about two weeks of battery if I did not track anything (maybe 13-18 days). From 2017 to 2021, it degraded to where I would have to charge every 6 or 7 days if I did not track anything (about half the original performance).

Just out of curiosity everyone, my Fenix 6x pro has screws on the back side of the watch. Would removing the back plate allow easier access to the battery? I’ve recently noticed less battery capacity on my watch as well.
Depends. A lot of people, including myself, have noted that the back screws are fastened so tightly that they are impossible to remove without damaging. Many have had to go through the front. Does this battery work for the 5X plus?
I don't know... :| sorry LJ. It's been awhile and I forgot where my source was for identifying what model of battery goes in what watch. I think it would come down to the battery's wire harness. If the 5X plus has the same "plug" as the 5X, then I would imagine it would fit because space is the only limiting factor. Apparently the 5X battery may not fit in the 5 due to its bulkier size.

@@thermodynamical5635 I tried hard reset. I think it’s bricked. Probably smashed some components while squeezing to fit the bulkier battery. 😭
Have you tried reinstalling the old battery and double checking all ribbons are plugged in?
@@thermodynamical5635 yes. The old one is now installed. Both ribbons connected. My thought is that when tried to close the case with the bulkier battery, some welding might could be broken. Or when was removing the old one.
I’m very sorry to hear that man. That’s terrible. It’s unfortunate these parts have to be so fragile and difficult to work with.
Can you not replace the battery from the back?
So take this with a grain of salt, but I think the back screws might be cosmetic. Mine wouldn’t come undone with moderate pressure and I did not want to strip one or break my bit. The front ones came off reasonably well.
I've just replaced mine from the rear and seems easier. All the videos seem to go through the front like this one, but found rear unscrewed just fine and seems to work. Battery in, and charging up now. Same as original video I found my new battery, even though labelled as Fenix 5 was fractionally bigger, mostly on corners so needed some careful work to install but did fit.
Interesting! Nice job. That sounds way easier than going through the front. For the life of me I could not get my back plate off lol.
I came here to ask this. Thank you
So you have me thinking... when the day finally comes my 5X "truly" dies, I'm going to attempt to unscrew the back and see how stuck they really are. I have a guess that my standard steel cheapo bit kit will strip and break before garmin's stainless steel hardware does. Was quite impressed with the hardware quality.
thanks 😀
