Garmin Fenix 5X Battery Replacement - 6 Month Update
In my first video, I talked about how I replaced my Fenix 5X battery. Some commenters requested I do a battery life and waterproofness update.
Battery life:
Low Activity: 16-18 days.
Moderate Activity: 13-16 days.
Waterproofness: I only swam a few times and it wasn't that deep. Accidentally blasting it with a pressure washer didn't hurt it. It seems like it is doing well.

How to replace your aging Garmin Fenix 5X Battery
Переглядів 82 тис.3 роки тому
Note: Isopropyl Alcohol is likely better for dealing with glue than gentle/gradual warming. Note 2: Since the making of this video, I have heard of Garmin servicing older Fenix watches. A month ago I replaced my 50% health Garmin battery with an Aliexpress Garmin replacement. I bought the watch back in 2017. The replacement probably had 80-85% health remaining. Today I replaced it again with a ...
My Fenix 5X battery just went dead. What battery/brand did you purchase, and are you still happy with it?
I don't have a recommendation unfortunately. My battery does still work, but the aliexpress listing is long gone. Try searching around for the part numbers on that site for a newer listing. Honestly aliexpress is generally a crapshoot but I'm hoping you'll find an updated one. These watches are getting really old now lol.
@thermodynamical5635 thank you for the reply. I just called Garmin to see what they would say. Obviously they don't support because it is so old, but would give me 20% off a Fenix 7 PRO, and would have to wait until Nov timeframe for discount on the 8 series. Looking at videos to decide. I will probably just try my luck with a battery for the 5X first. Thank you again. Great instructional video by the way.
@@chuckw1566 I totally recommend toying with your 5X before pulling the trigger on a new one, especially if you like tinkering and it's kaput anyway. I had fun and learned a lot. These are pricey lol.
Replaced my battery following the video, worked great! Not on the battery cable - just remember the positive red cable goes toward the center, then you don't need to look for any connector details. My battery came out easily... leaving the sticky stuff and the wrapper of the battery behind. But that was pretty easy to get off too, so all in all it took about 30 minutes. Thanks!!!
Excellent work. I love hearing stories like this. Congrats on the successful tear down. I hope you learned as much as I did wit this. Awesome!
I have a Fenix 5x from 2017. It died on 5/24. I bought a battery on Aliexpress, which is working perfectly, as I tested it with a multimeter. I installed it, and still, the clock is dead. I'm done with Garmin.
Sorry to hear that. Have you reached out to Garmin? I've heard that since making this video they may have support for replacing the batteries now.
Hi, Great video! Thank you very informative, I am planning to get hsabat 600maH battery. Would you recommend this? how does it hold so far after replacing it? And how many hours is the battery life for 600maH? Thanks!
has anyone replaced the Fenix 6 battery?
I haven't myself hopefullly you come across someone if you don't send it in for service
Thanks for the tutorial. I changed my battery but I have a little problem. When the Garmin reach the half battery says that the battery is empty, go to +-50% directly to 0%. When I charge I need only 130 mAh to load the battery. What can I do? Thanks
Forgive me, I am having trouble understanding your statement. Are you saying that you charge your battery, you use it for awhile, it eventually goes to 50% remaining, then immediately after it reaches the 50%, the battery dies and goes to 0%? If that is the case, I wonder about two things: 1) Is one of your connections high resistance or not plugged in all the way? 2) is your battery a dud in general? Otherwise, I do not have any good ideas... I am definitely not an expert nor an electrical engineer.
I will also add that it sounds like in general, you had partial success because your watch actually turned on and stayed on for awhile indicating you did your disassembly and reassembly fairly well. Good job on that. But yeah let me know your thoughts.
@@thermodynamical5635 the fènix works perfect but when t'he battery reach 50% or a little less he thinks that is 0%. I think ist a software problem, when I changed the old battery was on + - 50%. I did a hard reset and now Im waiting a few days. Sorry for my Bad english
okay I understand, your english is okay don't worry. I hope the few days might help.@@joanrossello5192
I did it, however, after replacement, I only can start the watch by connecting the charger cable, and the starting button doesn't work. After disconnecting the charging cable the watch switches off immediately. It seems as if the battery is not connected. Any idea?
It sounds like there's a possibility you have a connection issue between your battery and battery wires, your battery wires and board, or a ribbon cable is not seated properly. You may have to take a voltage reading at the end of your battery wires and see if you get anything. It sounds like its a working watch and you its either an issue with your battery or battery connection as you suggested. If you figure it out, please reply so other people are aware.
@@thermodynamical5635 How can I test the voltage, the connection is sooo tiny!
I haven't had a look in a couple years so I'm honestly not sure, but on that plastic connector at the end of the battery wire I wonder if you can use DMM with clips on a thin needle or something if you're super careful but I am definitely not an expert to speak on that @@markus7894
good question and I have a crappy answer so I apologize. I am thinking tiny copper pins or maybe a dupont connector or who knows. Man this goes into I am clueless territory. Did you have any luck perhaps just with disassemble, reassemble? @@markus7894
what watch face did you have on your watch? It looks pretty cool.
Ironic, but I rarely use the watch much anymore since I'm involved with electrical work. completely forgot how I got that face.
The Inside of my 5x ist a little bit different of yours. I dont know why.
Thank you for this very good guide. The battery was very difficult to remove. I carefully warmed it up a bit with a hairdryer (carefully!!!). The glue then softened and the battery could be removed. Clock is running perfectly again. Greetings from Germany Dirk
Dirk, I am very glad you worked out the issue. Good job! I wish I would have used isopropyl alcohol like other commenters did. Good call on hairdryer.
Thanks, really helpful for my battery change. Only thing I can add. I droppered IPA (iso propyl alcohol) in between the battery and sticky pad to soften the adhesive. It worked well.
good. yeah that was a trick I wish I knew before I started lol
This guy knows what he is talking about.
sometimes lol
Thank you for helping me with this video.
Where can I Buy the battery?
not sure
Hi, did you reset the garmin after changing the battery? thanks
no
Thank you. My back sensor was cracked (it's a thin plastic that covers the sensor) and I couldn't keep wearing at work because the dish detergent gets in the cracks and irritated my skin. Anyhow thanks for this video, it's very good and at reboot on my watch, I didn't mess it up!!
Changed the battery in my fenix5x. No probs. On the charger all well. When I disconnect from the power cord it turns off. Any ideas? Nothing is pinched.
I have no idea. I wonder if you unplug your battery connector and replug it in if that helps. It sounds like your battery is not part of the circuit at the moment. Does your battery by itself have a voltage?
Did you resolve this issue @kylerobertson3585 ? Im having the same issue
5:50 that film you speak of, it sounds like the waterproofing material, was it that?
Hi Lokesh thanks for asking. I do not remember what the material was for (it was a while ago), but it was not for waterproofing. In my opinion, the garmin's main line of defense from water is how good of condition the outer o-ring is in. That outer ring, kept clean and free of debris, combined with screws kept snug and tight, are what provide the main defense from water.
Nice Helped me replacing the battery, got an used Fenix 5x from ebay for 65 Euro, in good condition only the battery wasnt that good anymore so replaced it with a new one for 12 Euro and the Watch is as good as new
Nice video. I had a Garman 5 which the battery had deteriorated to only hold a charge for three days. I ordered the new battery and disassembled my watch to discover the glue backing to the battery had "melted" and run all over the connections. The battery connector was glued to the ribbon to the point that it tore despite my best efforts to slowly pry it free. Garmin does not replace the batteries leaving us, the consumer, to do our best to perform watch repairs on our kitchen tables. My watch went into the trash and I'll never buy another Garmin product again.
Sorry to hear that. I put a note and pinned a comment about Isopropyl alcohol for dealing with the glue... read your comment and added a caption as well. If the caption ends up working and appearing in the video, maybe the next person with glue troubles might have better luck. These are honestly quite risky to service.
@@thermodynamical5635 The glue that melted on to the interior surfaces made it impossible to remove the factory battery connector from the ribbon without damage. As a footnote I've worked on electronic gear for years and this was like super glue was poured into it. As stated the watch went into the trash that day. I thank you for the video and the directions but sometime bad things happen.
@@williamjasper6509 Oh wow. Okay I see what you're saying; makes sense. Good grief that's bad. I should consider myself pretty lucky then. I don't think you're the only one who has mentioned troubles like that either. Best of luck William.
Hi Back screws easy but not backplate. Any advice to remove loosen the back. Hairdryer?
I don't know. hope you had luck. sorry saw this too late probably
I Just changed the battery but from the back. Much easier and it works
Hi Backplate stuck or not?
I hope this reaches you. My 5x just died the other day. Battery drained as normal but now will not take a charge even with a new chord. I've done my best to clean the ports. I'm assuming it's the battery but I'm not 100% sure. Would you suggest changing the battery at this point?
how old is it?
@@thermodynamical5635 2017 I believe is when I got it.
@@logankeene7528 Your battery is toast man. I barely get three years out of a cell phone or laptop battery. I'm impressed yours held out that long. Mine was a 2017 also. Btw if you don't want to DIY fix it, garmin now can replace it for you.
@thermodynamical haha I thought so. Tbh I was incredibly impressed with it. From the day I bought until this week it has maintained 1-2 weeks battery life utilizing the strength function with no GPS and then the running and hiking functions with GPS for several days a week. It's seen the life of an infantry marine with the band being the only thing I ever replaced. Very impressive watch. It would be hard to convince me that there's something better.
@@logankeene7528 Good to hear man. I felt the same about mine. Great product. I wish the bands were cheaper, but wow, they're so much better than the knockoff ones. Anyways I wish you the best of luck whether you plan on DIY or sending it in for service. Hopefully it works well again soon.
SAME HERE WHITH GARMIN INSTICT
you know the small piece at the board connecting the lcd cable... Well i accidentally peel it off together ... Any way to fix it ?? Really need ure feed back..
Great video! A note for anyone doing this replacement on a Fenix 5, not a 5X like this video is for, you'll want to open the case from the BACK, not the front
awesome
Replace battery
Thanks for the update! How long did your battery last, before having to change it? I thought my battery was failing the other day. I'd charged it up to 100%, and the next morning it had switched off. I switched it on again, and it was showing only 4%! I put it on charge (using a smart battery PD 3.0, QC 4.0) and it seemed to recover! (This was a few weeks ago). It's now showing: Long term average 10.68d/chg Since last chg: 11.15d/chg So, it's actually improved! No idea why this would be. I bought my watch November 2017.
Thanks for the tutorial. Any reason you didn'y go in from the back of the watch? Thanks!
반갑습니다 600배터리 교체시 몇일동안 사용 가능한가요
I had problem with my garmin fenix 5x ... it only works when is plug in on charger . Garmin offical service says the problem can't be solved . Do you have some similar issues ?
Haven't heard of it myself. Probably wouldn't hurt to change the battery. Apparently garmin changes batteries out nowadays since some time after I made this video btw.
👍 thk for tutorial. Done in 15mn. Hope the seal will last!
impressive. nice work
Just out of curiosity everyone, my Fenix 6x pro has screws on the back side of the watch. Would removing the back plate allow easier access to the battery? I’ve recently noticed less battery capacity on my watch as well.
Depends. A lot of people, including myself, have noted that the back screws are fastened so tightly that they are impossible to remove without damaging. Many have had to go through the front. If your back screws aren't too crazy, it may be easier to do that if you're very cautious about ribbon cables.
@@thermodynamical5635 How can they be too tight? Someone must have tightened them to the correct torque.
@@justinbarber4567 by fastened tightly, I meant that they are screwed in tight, - yes - probably to a torque spec, but are also loc-tite sealed in place. Attempting to unscrew would result in damage.
@@thermodynamical5635 Thank you.
@@thermodynamical5635 Just an update. I removed the four torx screws with T6 (they were not tight) and the back simply popped off and there is the battery.
Nice video, thank you very much.
you're welcome edwin. hope everything is working out for you.
Thank you for the video, I was a bit chicken in making it work. But I did get it done. Just booted up so that's awesome!
good job Charles
Great video! I just replaced the battery on my Fenix 5x as I followed along with your video. You nicely pointed to all the tricky spots, including starting from the front instead of the back. I ordered the original battery with tools on eBay for about $26 and had no problems with just the tools included. I was able to slowly and patiently pry the battery off with the spludging tool from the kit. I did clean the mating surfaces of the face and add a little silicon grease to the gasket. I'm confident enough to go swimming with this watch to the original depth. And you don't have to worry about an explosion from the old battery. I took a gasket scraping tool to the battery and couldn't even get a spark out it. It got a little warm after I punctured the battery with many large slits.
nice job Jim. glad to hear your success story.
Could you share the link, or share the list of tools and parts you used please?
How is this new battery doing?
excellent
Great video, thank you. What type of glue should be used in these applications? (i.e. so that it can be dissolved with isopropyl alcohol)
I am not sure Tim.
HI. What about waterresistent ? I want thinig aboout the replacement. I swimming a lot . So I afraid about that. THX for answer
any update on the battery life is it comparable to the stock battery and how is it holding up today
about similar
You can use Precision Electronic Cleaning Solvent / Contact Cleaner from Mechanic brand to remove the battery so easily dan quickly. Just spray it in the bottom of the battery that is sticky, and than you can pull up the battery. This Contact cleaner is safe for your electronic component. It can be used to cleaning corrotion in the circuit board.
isopropyl alcohol too
Hi why you didn't open from the back?
screws too tight; didn't want to break them
I'm unsure if the increase battery capacity will make it last any longer because the watch software could be limiting the 600mah to only 430mah. in other words software might not see the extra 170mah.🤔
yeah
Can i use fenix 5x battery for fenix 5, to increase fenix 5 battery capacity
I don't think it is possible. I think the fenix 5 has a slightly smaller space for the battery. Take what I say on this with a grain of salt though.
Did you have some issue with waterproof after changing the battery?
no issue
Battery link? Trying to replace my tactical Charlie battery.
I did the same battery swap on my Garmin F5, however it won't charge, any advise?
Are your wire harnesses plugged in all the way?
@@thermodynamical5635 yes. The watch powered on, showing battery level. I suspect the bigger battery is causing the 4 internal charger pins not able to sit all the way down.
I'm having the same problem. Purchased 361-00097-00 for Fenix 5. Installation went well, watch powers on and works correctly, but battery will not charge. Reinstalled original battery and charging function returned. 🤔
Please can someone help.. has a battery been found that fits, works and has higher capacity than the original??? As an ultra runner I really would like to extend the max GPS time higher than than the standard 20hrs... Many thanks in advance :)
I have not heard of one.
Thank you, replaced my battery and very happy to breath new life into my old friend!
awesome
lucky I found your channel. I was about to bid on a Fenix5x, but now I'm a bit doubtful. I don't want to change batteries as well as pay for a watch.
is it possible to change the battery in a garmin tactix charlie?
Hi Wiebe Felix. I'm not sure. If you are interested, I could try and replace yours if you happen to be near Oklahoma. If somebody sent me a different garmin model to repair, I bet I could do it. They're probably quite similar.
Hi Wiebe Felix, I just disassembled my Tactix Charlie, and it appears to have all parts and the battery identical to Fenix 5 Thank you to@thermodynamical for the great video.
@@valdrevylo2623 Thanks for the information! :-) It´s a great watch! Good thing one can exchange the battery! I wonder if one can put in an even bigger battery , to extend the battery life further. Thanks for the great video!@thermodynamical
