    Matt, thanks for all your videos, I really enjoy them. I'm Australian, so our terminology and methodology may differ. You don't seem to be grading a "crown" into your road, just grading it flat. A crown, even on the single lane will assist in water displacement/run off, not leaving water pooling on the surface causing damage. Sorry if I am telling you something you know. Keep up the good work. 😀

    Matt, Awesome Job!
    Once you are able to review the driveway performance in the rain, you may want to consider re-openning the drainage ditches on each side and possibly crown the driveway to improve drainage runoff so water doesn't sit and permeate your work creating soft spots or places for pot holes to develop.

    • @kenb.6631
      @kenb.6631 2 роки тому +4

    Congratulations Matt! The Diesel Creek Interstate turned out very nice! I have made similar tracks here on our farm in the UK. As you graded it flat across the width, if that top coat settles out and you get some ponding on the road that wants to soak into the road sub-base, you might want to consider taking the grader back over it and put a bit of a camber on it so the middle is a slight high point and roll it as two strips that fall away from the centre line to help the road shed the rainfall to the sides. I noticed some wet areas beside the road. Here in the UK, we would also probably dig a shallow curved ditch / gulley each side to take the rain and lower the water table under the road to stop the sub base getting soft. Either way, it's a great road Matt! And it's very satisfying for us viewers to see you go from total forest to finished roadway. Looking forward to the new shop when it happens! All the best from Essex, UK.

    Construction companies fab a "shoe" for their grader blades. It helps carry the load without losing material around the blade. You can also control the extent of your spill to each side with it. "Shoe" is a local term, but it's a steel plate added to the ends of grader blades to carry material forward rather than losing it as a ridge row.

    If you have an asphalt plant nearby, they might give away some scraps of low bitumen aggregates. I dunno what it's called in english, but we usually purge the asphalt mixer with 2-3 tons of aggregates at the end of a days production, and since that builds up over time, we started giving it away, and farmers here love that stuff so much that now we actually sell it to them. You gotta lay it thick, like 6-10 inches, but that makes up your entire road corpus, top to bottom, no other aggregates required. I've seen roads made with it haul logging trucks all day every day for 10 years now without so much as a dent in them.

    Also if your going to stand like most do when operating a grader you should get a harness and hoke it up behind you so when you make a sudden stop Christine doesn’t run over you. It took one of our guys doing that that we installed them on our graders .

    When you started off square blading I thought it was going to end up with rock blown over the shoulders at the thickest part of every load but it must be wide enough for it to work here. If it were me, I'd start by angling the blade fairly sharp to the left and pulling the rock away from the right shoulder and leaving a window just outside the tires on the left side. Keep making passes like that sweeping the material from side to side until the window is fairly consistent. Then angle the blade back, maybe 20 or 30 degrees so material is falling out to the right shoulder as well as rolling the rest about 2/3 or 3/4 across the road without leaving a window by holding the trailing edge of the blade up a little to establish the crown on that half. Then on the last pass, angle the blade to the right 45 degrees or so and pull the rest of the material the rest of the way across the road, establishing the other half of the crown and covering the shoulder. A couple inches of crown goes a long way. Just make sure to keep your wheels off the windrow. Always try to leave it where you can straddle it with the front end and don't let the material roll under the back tires as it comes off the blade. If the crown doesn't turn out to your satisfaction, make another round and play with it. Keep up the great content!

    I was wearing my Christine shirt when I went to visit my grandkids. My two year old grandson asked if that was a tractor on my back. My seven grandson and "no, it's a road grader". I said they were both wrong, it's Christine and if you don't treat her right she will try to kill you. They both rolled their eyes. I guess they know me too well lol.

    Don't forget to leave 1½" to 2" of crown in the center lengthwise down the driveway so that gravity will automatically remove water from the surface ... standing water is the mortal enemy of any road surface as every tire that rolls through standing water will push small amounts of "fines" away with the water as it's splashed from under the tire. Hardened fines are the "binder" that holds the shape of the surface.
