The best Christmas of my life was getting a PS1 to share with my big brother and this game. I was only 7 years old and mostly watched him play but it's one of the fondest memories of my life, when my family was all together for a brief moment in time. I'm 34 now and still think about this game.

Great game! I think most people gave up after leaving Zalagoon because there is no guidance on what exactly you need to do and moving ahead too quickly only ensured getting KO'ed. I went back when I got older and decided to use a guide and finally got past that chunk of the story. One thing I would encourage anyone playing to do is to GRIND, GRIND, GRIND! Be careful moving south from Zalagoon as you can literally get stuck due to the high encounters and increasingly strong enemies. After you have some confidence, get Tont in Simone and then backtrack to the pyramid (after stacking up on consumables) to get the Moon Crescent. Things are somewhat straightforward after that. Again with the grinding, I would reccomend waiting until you can blaze through the random encounters in whatever area you are in before moving on because there are three enemies that I remember running into that just spam group spells at your party. Summoner, Sylph, and Elf.

Music for this gem of a game is composed by no other than the master himself, Sakuraba Motoi, whom according to Wikipedia also composed the music for many Camelot games including Mario Golf, Mario Tennis and the Golden Sun series. Of course, Dark Souls is another stand-out RPG series Sakuraba-sensei worked on, but Beyond the Beyond's music and gameplay hits all the right nostalgia notes.

I mean, Golden Sun almost feels like it's cut from the same cloth as Beyond the Beyond. Battle system is strikingly similar. They probably had many people from the Beyond the Beyond team working on it.

god i just remembered this game today... what a gem, not just the nostalgia talking but there are so many unique qualities about this game. it really makes you think when it comes to planning, and environmental puzzles. while some aspects/mechanics were not thought out well, the developers also didnt have the same kind of industry as today. today developers by and large have a plethora of past games to look at, knowing what mechanics work and why. but at the same time this leads to a lot of rinse and repeat "play it safe" business models. devs of the olden days with fewer preconceived notions came up with some really bizarre concepts. And i think thats what makes many old ass games very special. On a side note the kaleidoscope background for the dialogue cut scene with that music had me crackin up. what were they thinking!? its great in its own way and really fun to experience these bizarre concepts throughout the games playthrough. i remember old PS1 games that were just nuts. playing as the gecko from that insurance commercial but ur a secret agent 007 spy or some shit with bad one liners, a 2D side scroller where u play as a GMO spider in some laboratory and terrorists broke into the lab and now you gotta escape, but theres other GMO bugs you gotta fight/get past, special little armor and weapons fabricated for a spider LOL!, some dorky self aware robot in a 3rd person action/adventure shooter where u have to eliminate the evil robots only to find out they are possessed by ghosts cuz a robot figured out how to design itself to eat an apple and sustain itself like a living thing i guess? YOU CANT MAKE THIS SHIT UP LOL
and last but not least this little gem, where a 14 year old fights to save the world, while trying to understand his relationship with his family, his country, his own moral identity, and whether his sister girlfriend is evil or not.
bravo to this video for helping to preserve the history of this gem.

This is one of my all time fav rpg games, def in the top 10. There are so many hours to garner from this game it is amazing. When it first came out, it was actually a game both of my parents would play, and I would watch them both, as well as be their navigator, especially for my dad.
"No, that's the way you came in, you haven't gone that way yet though."
As it was such a long game, I never got to see either of them beat the game, as they were a bit too busy to really log the full hours the game requires. I also remember seeing the frustration from my dad as he'd thrown his controller more than once, likely from the high battle rate, and party wipes. As an adult now, I am picking my way through the game when I have time for it, and I have gotten further than either of them as well, though I still have not beaten as of yet.
Definitely a game for veteran players, even my parents were veterans at the time. I remember the first rpg games I watched them play were in the Dragon Warrior series. I didn't even know it was Dragon Quest series until about a decade later, (I still prefer the Warrior in the title) which is my favorite all time rpg series. DW3 changed so much for me, and I replayed it so many times, even trying my own challenge runs, seeing how far I could go solo party. Paralyzing monsters really sucked for that.
Great video, love to see that some of the old classics (god I feel old) are still appreciated. I actually like the use of VP, LP, and even the MP, as the first was a refreshing change, the second felt like people getting knocked out, and the latter being a very tactical resource.

So much nostalgia. This was my first rpg game as kid. I got it with my ps1 for my 11th birthday and didn't touch it for at least a year because I was like what is this? When I did finally try it I got hooked on the open world role-playing aspect. The story had a lot of charm. I remember getting stuck so many times and getting frustrated. I had to look up online text walk-throughs to progress, but eventually I upgraded to a ps2 and never finished it.

I vividly recall how absolutely punishing this JRPG was as a kid. Even softlocked myself in the Spirit Cave right at the start. Turns out if you don't get the spring water earlier on a branching path in the dungeon first you can't do anything to save Anne but you also can't leave the room because you need to save her in order to leave so you have to restart.

    • @robertmarts6810
      @robertmarts6810 Місяць тому

I guess story-wise she dies no matter what. Even though Steiner says don't leave, you can still go back up and get the spirit water, then return to rescue her. It was definitely a confusing game mechanic though.

Got it on fair condition from internet and it was totally worth it 🤩
Personally I absolutely love sprite effects on 3d environments so is a MUST HAVE.
It is grindy but the battle system and charming visuals makes up for it big time however that puzzle minigame and the curse on Edward are a real pain😅
I believe it was developed by Camelot so I couldn't help but feeling like a golden sun game😌

This game was made by Camelot Software, right? You can definitely see the influence of the Shining Force games from the way the game is displayed, to the sound that chitters along to the appearing dialogue. You can also see the start of what would become the Golden Sun series too. Especially in the way the battles take place, and the summons. I haven't played Beyond the Beyond before, as it was never released in Australia (to my knowledge - I never found it anywhere). But, this video is making me want to try it. Nice review. Thanks!

This was the first JRPG I ever played back when I was only 10 years old and BOY did this game kick my ass a lot. I ended up grinding to about level 65 or so before the class change because of how often I just got stuck on some of the puzzles and had to just go do something else. The only thing that stopped me from just giving the game away was how good the music was.

I remember getting this game because it was the only JRPG available on the console at the time. I never beat it, for some reason. I don't remember why. I remember at the beginning Bandore is all powerful and you slowly regain territory and learn what happened and why Bandore became evil. I preferred this style and story to the Final fantasy series which was just too abstract and out there for me to appreciate. Thus game was tough at 12 years old but I replayed it at 24 and got thru it more easily as if I had leveled up in real life. I'm 36 now and time to play it a 3rd time .

This is one of my favorite summer games, but dear Lord did it frustrate the shit out of me sometimes. I remember audibly groaning when the jarring battle sound would signal yet another battle. I love to battle and grind in JRPGs, but this one's rate is in a class all it's own. The Finn and Steiner Dual Attack sound effect has been stuck in my head all this time! Revisiting it as an adult with considerably more patience allows me to appreciate it even more, especially the music.
