It's been decades since I played this, fighting those lizardmen in that subterranean lair stands out.
I oughta play this game again soon, it's better than A Link To The Past IMO, waaay more challenging, tougher enemies, tougher bosses and the puzzles...wow.
Never played a game with this many puzzles, some of them very challenging, at least they were to my 14-16 year old brain, not sure how I'd fair now.
I remember this game being like a visual spatial iQ test.
What's not to love about this game?
Graphics and music were great, challenge was awesome, difficult but rewarding, not cheap, story was dark and more mature than other overhead action adventure games.
To me it's the ultimate action adventure game.
Also took waaay longer to beat it than ALTTP.
To me this one stands out, they borrowed from Zelda but they took the overhead action adventure genre in such a different direction, I wouldn't call it a mere clone, because it was so distinctive and, superior, and I love Zelda too, especially ALTTP.

Working Designs was a very obscure (now deceased) software company and it's likely that they just didn't have alot of marketing for their games ...but they also made the "Arc the Lad" games which were some other hidden gems on the PlayStation that I enjoyed!💖

Because it looked too much like previous gen titles. That year we were being absolutely wow'd by Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy VII, Star Fox 64. The best selling games that year were Mario Kart, Mario 64, GoldenEye. Alundra by definition was overlooked. A lot of us put it on our backlog. But then 1998-1999 etc. We just moved on super fast. I didn't get around to playing this game for almost 20 years.

@@ZidaneSteiner I really don't think it having sprite based art was as big of a problem as you suggest. I got Alundra when I was 10 after it had been out for a few months, and I begged my dad to get it for me mostly because the in-game art looked so awesome to me. It was a marketing problem like zparklebugz424 said. I only knew the game existed because my dad would bring me to EB and let me pick out games, and I found a strategy guide for Alundra and thought it looked insanely cool.
Lots of sprite based games at the time did incredibly well, and Alundra had basically top of the line 32-bit sprite art. I think it was just unknown (literally no one at school knew what it was when I would bring it up,) and perhaps too dark/adult to really get the big push it needed. Look at even Saga Frontier, which came out just a few months after Alundra, and is one of the most famous PS1 era RPGs. It really comes down to who made the game, what resources they had to market the game, and how it was marketed. Alundra was a new IP from a company that was only known for remaking cult classics, so it was kind of doomed from the start.

I agree with you on all points. I'm from France and not many people know this wonderful game despite its originality and... to be honest, the designs, sprites and visual direction of this game still impress me today ! @@Eener1000 There is no „objectively better“ when it comes to quality of entertainment media. The quality is not unambiguously measurable like performance tests of cars e.g.
It is all up to subjective preference especially in terms of two such high regarded games. Even the few measurable aspects like framerate are only that: aspects. Which are regarded subjectively from person to person there is no general hierarchy which aspect is most important and which is least. It is - again - absolutely up to preference.

Alundra holds a very special place in my heart being the first Zelda-like I've ever played. Since getting it I've played it every year and with each subsequent playthrough I always seem to find something new about the game be it an exploit an Easter egg whatever it may be. Im.30 years old now and upon initially discovery I didn't really understand alot of the core themes of the game until I after I had graduated. But as time progressed I found that alot of what the game explored impacted me in ways that I could only describe as character defining for the person I've become. Loss is intrinsic to most people bit it isn't until you actually experience it first hand that you understand the full gravity of what's transpired. And in those time when you don't know what to do alotnof us turn to faith for the answers we seek. Reality is stranger then fiction and there comes a time when you have to ask your self if what you believe in is the correct path or if there ever as a path at all. Depression is a frightful thing that most people sadly cave to and I can't say that its never experienced but sadly most people do and im.no exception. Everyone has demons and monsters that they have to deal with by themselves tho and sometimes it doesn't have the intended result you wish for but in the end if it matters enough and you strive for the best possible end things can and will work out for the best. The thing that matters most at the end of the day is how you decided to carry yourself tho such adversity thats how you define your self thags what this games taught if nothing else after playing and beating it 18 times. No game past present or future makes me.feel.the same.way alundra does and im not sure there will be one that ever does again. Tl;dr This is my favorite gamr.of all time and if you're any kind of Zelda fan you owe yourself this experience at least once before you pass on

Oh, how I miss great games like this as they helped me navigate life when I was a teen. Although I can now say, don’t “sleep” on this one. However, I would never “dream” of doing so. I could gush and gush about this game. Really. I truly believe this game isnt for everyone - but for those it is for - it must be unforgettable. Going in blind, the only other games I've had to work my brain so obtusely so often for were The Witness, The Talos Principle, and La Mulana. And I love those games. Outside of a few hiccups in design like bad luck with the roulette and enemies need about 25% less HP, its damn near the perfect game for me. My favorite part was somewhere near the end of the 3rd dream when I realized... Working Designs are not going to give you a fairy tale ending. This is not a feel good coming-of-age story like Lunar. You will not laugh in the same way as Popful Mail did. (Except for Bonaire, jebus bless.) I feel like if I write much more I'll be stan-ing this too hard, but this is almost a masterpiece of gaming and its a shame so few have played it.

I'm playing through Alundra and a couple of things stand out to me:
    - Your character is hinted at having a backstory but only sometimes, there's a girl in the village who's like "why did you come back?" as if we've been in this town before, and of course how you somehow don't know what your own clan of elves can do but some random book does. Meanwhile the manual is more concerned about explaining a self-explanatory ban on idol worship.
    - How the dialogue mixes an attmempt at old-timey speech with very modern stuff. Like... a literal surfer bro.

Playing Alundra feels like being in a nightmare,.. and I'm saying this as a compliment.
It gives off the vibe that I'm in a fantasy world, but everything is corrupted everyone is suffering, and the brutal difficulty in bosses and puzzles make any Zelda game looks like a child play.
The part where we went on a paradise-like garden felt like it's a sweet part of a nightmare.
The final dungeon felt like it's a gateway between the nightmare and the real world.
And when I finally beat the game, I did feel like I won against the neverending nightmare world.

I did recently discover the "Un-Working Designs" version, and this may have been part of the issue, as it fixes the games difficulty that was increased when brought to the west. • @tyisafk
      @tyisafk 2 роки тому

I think it was because of rentals, which I dunno about Japan but they were VERY popular in the West. Zelda 2 was notorious for this. Publishers didn't want people to finish games that were rented out in a single sitting. A lot of games took enough time to beat where someone dedicated enough could just rent the game for a day or two, marathon the game until completion before it's due then return it, so the game would have an artificial difficulty bump to help prevent this. It's scummy, but that's the way it was.

    • @thenonexistinghero
      @thenonexistinghero 2 роки тому

@@tyisafk Nah, it wasn't scummy for most part. Developers needed their games to make profit. They wouldn't make a profit if people just rented games for a few days, beat them and then never returned.
They needed their games to be both good enough for players to want to return to it after renting, while being hard enough for players to not be able to beat them in a single renting session so that the players might actually buy the game.
If devs didn't do that, gaming's growth would've been much slower. Worst case scenario, it might have died an early death.

Great video. I _absolutely LOVE_ Alundra. The puzzles are absolutely insane, the story is very mature and the game is very lengthy. I would also add the spiritual sequel by many of the same devs, Dual Hearts. While Alundra 1 is still their best game, it is pretty decent. I would also recommend all fans of Alundra to play Prodigal (on Steam) for a more... Link's Awakening take on the Alundra formula (Alundra and LA fans will understand this). I wish more people played this game, it is a game I put in every console I can ranging from PS1, PS2, Wii U, New 3DS (yes), PSP, PS Vita and Switch.
There was a time where I said the best 2D Zelda is Alundra and the best 3D Zelda was Okami. Those times are gone, but Alundra is still, to this day, one of the best games in the genre.
PLEASE, Legend of Zelda fans, I implore you to give this game a shot.

the game got ruined by cruel level designers. Pixel perfect jumping sections that I still struggle with 30 years later. brutally esoteric puzzles you could never complete without a guide and the tedious and repetitive dungeons. A real shame.

Alundra was of the few games I've never fully completed and first fictional piece of media where I actually cried at the passing of a fictional character. The mature themes along with the music and the mind bending out of the box puzzles made this game truly unforgettable.
And apparently, Alundra gameplay can be seen at E3 1997.

Played this game a couple years ago. Fantastic. What I remember most is some hair pulling puzzles and how depressing the story is. Working designs DID tweak the gameplay and made enemies more stronger and take more hits to defeat. Also if you die a lot they give you an option to have a legendary sword that just one shots everything and if you are a completionist there is missable gilded falcon statues that lock you out of getting a weapon called the spirit wand.

Tnis game is immensely underrated. I got this game when it first came out and although I lost the case I still have the original disc. This game means the world to me, the story was awesome and dark and every mission felt like life or death for the people of the village, I was always so upset that at the fact you can't save everyone.
The puzzles were brutal but as you said they felt rewarding for solving them.
Landscaper and the shining force games are my other favourite games so to hear them referenced was lovely. I didn't like link to the past but I adore Alundra. I still play it to this day, Kodaly on emulator though because I need them save states for those tricky jumps!
It's hard to pick a best moment in a game filled with so much grief. But killing the Murrg always felt so good because I hate them damn monkrys so much especially for what they did to the miners.
