The Modesto Nuts are staying at John Thurman Field for at least one more season.
The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved keeping the Nuts at city-owned Thurman Field through Sept. 30, 2025, as well as authorizing City Manager Joe Lopez to complete the short-term deal with the Seattle Mariners, which owns the Class A minor league Nuts.
The one-year extension gives Modesto and the Mariners time to reach a long-term deal for the Nuts to continue to play at John Thurman. But the extension states there is an April 1, 2025, deadline to reach a deal, and if one is not reached, the Nuts would leave Modesto by Oct. 1, 2025.
Tuesday’s council vote comes after the Mariners and Modesto announced July 10 that this would be the Nuts’ final season at John Thurman because they could not agree on a long-term lease extension.
The sticking point appeared to be $32 million in Major League Baseball-mandated improvements to the ballpark, according to a talking-points memo Lopez provided council members.

The MLB takeover of the minor leagues was a stupid disaster.
Eh, it’s half doing what they intended it to do. They’ve actually found a couple of suckers to build new parks.
It SHOULD be a disaster. Fans should be punishing baseball for this behavior.
Not really. I feel for the towns that lost their teams but the stadiums had to have basic universal standards. It’s unfair to the players to have such wild facility standards.
@@gvrx1384 No thought to who pays for the ballparks?
Perhaps the more poignant question: given rumors that baseball wants to cut more minor league affiliates, is it worth losing around 20% of the available teams and jobs for the remaining players to have better facilities while the travel situation almost certainly degrades?
As a long time, past resident of Modesto, (I worked for the Modesto A's, as the scoreboard operator working along side Dieter Ruhle, the current Dodger stadium organist, ran the music, and even the "clubby" one Summer, literally, washing Jason Giambi's jock 😅) and then taking our young family out the Thurman Field, (hence, my boys are A's fans...for now) its nice to see this development. I have had to defend the city in chatrooms, those saying, "good riddance, and Modesto "sucks" etc etc, saying it's not the cities fault! I am betting that the pasture wasn't as "green" for the Mariners in seeking other cities and it was they who came back to the preverbal table. The current Mayor is a long time family friend. Maybe I can get some insight 😁
I remember playing an All Star little league game there. That was when they were the Modesto A’s. Feels like a lifetime ago. Stopped going there after the Rockies took them over. Just never felt right. I went there for July 4th fireworks too. Have not been there in a long time. Always had fond memories of it though.
@@IamSumfoo On that note, I remember being on a trip and stopping in Visalia for a Central Valley Rockies game… certainly for the irony of the name.
Damn… that’s nuts
I hope they can find a long-term solution. I want the fans in Modesto to keep their team.
My guess is that the Nuts were forced to come back to the negotiating table because they didn't have anywhere to land for 2025. It's not like the A's who were able to secure a temporary base in West Sacramento.
What it probably came down to was that they didn't have a solution for next year as the new stadium in Ontario hasn't been built yet, so this was preferable to sharing a ballpark in San Bernardino.
@@Ianmccor If there’s any justice, assuming the Ontario ballpark gets built, San Berdoo tells baseball to pound sand when baseball demands ballpark improvements.
So far, with several cities rejecting improvements, it would seem there’s enough people calling the bluff to give baseball pause. Yet the other side of the coin is a contraction becomes more likely.
@@PCSPounder Yeah I'm worried that as a fan of a "Single-A" team, MLB will use this as an excuse to scrap the level as they did with Rookie. I know that Myrtle Beach has faced similar problems as Modesto, but there is no logical place for them to move to. Lynchburg has also threatened to relocate for years as well but can't find a place to do so.
@@Ianmccor With the failure of a ballot measure in Eugene, I’m really questioning if the Northwest League would have another location to move… that fits their new “standards.” I’ve been forwarded a rumor that the Emeralds are looking at a site that’s 30 miles from a current market… but not the big 3 markets (Seattle/Everett, Portland/Hillsboro, or Vancouver). I feel like Eugene should be, and is, calling a bluff. Perhaps the bigger concern is baseball pulling out of markets while merging the Northwest and California Leagues.
As a Modesto resident and Nuts fan/attendee, I am so happy there's a temporary deal. Honestly John Thurman Field needs major upgrades but Modesto shouldn't be completely on the hook like the Mariners seemed to have wanted
I used to watch Modesto A's games in the mid 70's. Saw Rickey Henderson come up with them. They knew hed be a big leaguer.
Great news! My mom used to live in Modesto. I love the team name. Glad they have a new lease on life!
Glad to hear about this! I really like reading about the minor league towns and cities that have hosted baseball or hockey for many decades and are as much a part of the community as the major league clubs are. Fingers crossed they’ll work out a deal and get those facilities upgrades.
This is how it works when there is real collaboration between the city and the organization. #FJF
When MiLB was taken over by MLB, that should have been the final straw in terms of MLB's Antitrust exemption.
They’ll reclassify themselves as an agricultural cooperative and become completely untouchable in this respect
This makes sense to me. There didn't seem to be any place for them to go
hope to see you at john Thurman field brodie, dope video 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Modesto should buy the team
Where would the Nuts move in the California League where a city would build the team a new ballpark?
Exactly. It’s just a game of musical chairs
Therein lies the rub. The plan, as we all assumed in July, was musical chairs with the Dodgers taking over the proposed new stadium in Ontario, the Angels taking the Dodgers' current spot in Rancho Cucamonga, and the Mariners settling in at the Angels' current spot in San Bernardino. But that Ontario stadium isn't going to be ready for at least another year and a half. Plus there's the ongoing Sacramento/Vegas/Insert City Here A's debacle
ceres and turlock the nearby cities offered to build them the stadium 😂
So excited that Modesto is staying for another year. Long live the Nuts!
Modesto here... Sure the field needs to be made, but come on, 32 million?
One Midwest League park just spent 2 seasons upgrading the locker rooms... During this off-season, a new playing field, fences being brought in, and new (off field) bullpens are to happen
Not being the guru of California League baseball, I have to ask whether Modesto’s stadium is the only one that fails to meet this upgrade requirement? Is this just the first of many? I went to Stockton this year and it was very nice. Seems Rancho Cucamonga was nice when I went years ago. Assume San Jose hasn’t changed since I went in the ‘80s.
I have lived across the street from the stadium for 8 yrs and love baseball and the nuts for being a consistent team even though im from san jose I love the nuts. I really hope they figure something out especially cause they have land with the golf course being closed
Thankk you for this video subbed
Excite Ballpark here in San Jose has hosted a baseball team since 1942.
Visalia also is staying
I bet Modesto wasn't wanting to pay operating cost or part anymore and that was the stipulation in the Ms deal
Somebody in the talks pissed off somebody with the clout to pull the plug . So glad they got back to the table. Single Season is done. So maybe the most pressing issues may get taken care of.
Small town rumor is nuts wanted a downtown Field
They had plans for a park next to police station and where body shops are.
😅😂 glad they're staying. Somebody in the city or with the team grew some nuts 😅😂
sweet dude i thought i was gonna have to start hating the mariners
Team yet to even make the World Series!!
Have MLB the help pay for upgrades.
I could think of a lot of people who should belong to this Team...lol...really cute name for them.
You know what happened? The Ontario ballpark still hasn’t broken ground for the LA dodgers Cal League team! Their current team in Rancho would moved to Ontario. Current San Bernardino team would move to Rancho, and the Nuts were suppose to move to San Bernardino!
Ontario ballpark has already been passed. They’re just waiting on signed agreements between the city and whoever owns the Rancho Cucamonga team. Not sure what the holdup is.
i am tired of these strong arm tactics -- threatening to leave . what do you expect now that mlb is pulling the strings. smh
You mean I made a special trip out to Modesto to see the Nuts for nothing??? 😆
Why didn’t they just take over Las Vegas’ AAA stadium?
Where would the Aviators play if that happened?
@@kjhuang Elsewhere. Might as well do it not. I don’t think Vegas is a big enough city to support a major league and a AAA franchise so they might as well get started thinking about moving, and it would do the Athletics good to start building a fanbase in Vegas
@@donkeysaurusrex7881 Well if you don't have an answer to where the Aviators would go, the Aviators probably wouldn't either. So that would be one of several reasons why the Nuts didn't "just take over Las Vegas' AAA stadium".
@@kjhuang Who said anything about the Nuts taking over their stadium? I was talking about the Athletics? Why would one AAA team try to displace another one? That’s just stupid.
@@donkeysaurusrex7881 Um… you might have wanted to say that in the first place. This particular piece is about the Modesto Nuts.
