    True story, bought a Submariner many years ago & was wearing it at the local watering hole shortly after buying it. Standing there at the bar (summer, short sleeves) having my cocktail. It was dark but a guy next to me noticed the Rolex & commented, "Wow, that's really a COOL watch!" "Thanks I responded", to which he added... "is that a Seiko!?"

    • @MattTonite
      @MattTonite 6 років тому +11

      I had a Pepsi and got the most comments from that Pepsi than any other watch in the past 30 years of wearing, appreciating, and buying/selling/trading watches. Which is a lot when they're from random strangers. Ironically, the comment/question was mostly the same. "Nice watch. What's that, an Invicta?"
      Ya know, people rarely recognize watches. In the 6 months I wore the BLNO, I probably got 5-6 random comments on it. 4 or 5 Invicta comments and 1 who actually recognized it as a Rolex.
      I have since realized that I'm not really a fan of Rolex's GMTs and flipped it. The $6k profit was too much to pass up for a watch I wasn't in love with.

      Haha, I have a similar story. I purchased a Submariner over the winter. I was wearing it at the resort in Aruba and some guy came up to me and said, "That's a beautiful watch, is it a TAG?"

    • @CrimFerret

      @@MattTonite Apparently some people love the Pepsi and the other bright two tone GMT's. They aren't my thing personally because whenever I see one, the first thing that comes to mind is 'low end Seiko dive watch'.
      The comment about flipping it is one of the reasons for buying quality watches in the first place. You can enjoy them as long as you want and if you stop enjoying a given watch you can sell or trade it for another quality watch for very little cost of ownership, or if you get lucky, make a little on the deal.

      I don't own a Rolex. I prefer leftfield brands. I know a Rolex makes sense financially (get your money back if you sell it).
      I am a big fan of the Valjoux 7751 movement. A Rolex just doesn't do enough (complications) for me.
      If I see someone wearing a Rolex who doesn't look like a typical Rolex wearer (working class person) I always (rightly or wrongly) assume it's a Hong Kong/Thailand knock off.

    • @yetidh9
      @yetidh9 6 років тому +2

      Good comment. And how many other items do we keep for over 25 years? A house? A classic car? A good pair of shoes? Anyone who thinks a Rolex is expensive needs to consider how long most owners keep them (usually a lifetime).

    • @yetidh9
      @yetidh9 6 років тому

      @Per Johansen a 36mm watch is elegant and versatile. Works well as both casual and a dress watch, unlike your 42mm Explorer 2 which would look crass with a suit. Gold vs. silver is personal choice. Some guys like gold because it matches their wedding ring for example.

    • @yetidh9
      @yetidh9 6 років тому +1

      Per Johansen it’s not the size, it’s the style that’s the issue for me. The Explorer 2 is a rugged watch for wearing outdoors, doing sports or traveling the world. It’s a great watch but would you wear a pair of hiking boots with your suit too? What about orange laces in your shoes? That’s how I see it.

    • @yetidh9
      @yetidh9 6 років тому

      Congrats dude! So the Explorer is perfect for you. I only wear suits for formal occasions, weddings etc. That's why I like to cherish the moment and wear a dress watch. I treated myself to a basic A.Lange Saxonia last year. That's only 37mm but it's so elegant, that's kind of why I responded to your comment about the size of the OP's day-date. Every watch has it's place :-)

    At the end of the day there’s just you and the watch. You either get it or you don’t. You either keep it or offload. It’s a personal journey or it’s nothing. Expecting others to buy into your passion is a deluded notion. Expecting others to view you in a certain way is just vanity. You’ll encounter praise, you’ll encounter nasty remarks but in the main you’ll encounter... absolutely nothing. In general people are just not into watches.

    When I turned 15 my dad gave me a Rolex as a gift for my birthday. I wore it to school everyday until one day during gym it was tucked away in my backpack and someone came into the locker room and stole money, wallets, jewelry etc from everyone’s personal bags. At the time I was too afraid to even bring up the fact someone had stolen my watch.. I was younger and naive. Wish I would of had a greater respect for nice personal items like that.. I’m 27 years old now with a professional career and still to this day I’m hesitant to purchase a Rolex for myself.. items like these always scare me and this video expresses exactly how I feel.. people around you will notice what you’re wearing and almost always view it negatively.

    I’ve had an assortment of 12-15 or so higher end watches over the past 15 or so years. One of those watches is a Rolex. I can’t recall an instance where somebody spontaneously commented to me about a watch I was wearing (well, one exception, when some guy commented on my Richard Lange on a Metro North train during an evening commute home). I don’t really care whether or what people think about my watches, or me because I’m wearing a particular watch. I just like good quality watches and that’s really all there is to it.

What I like about the Zenith is it's under the radar and most people don't know how much I paid for it unless their a watch guy/gal. Next on the list is a bp fifty fathoms bathyscape, a little bit bigger at 43 mm but from same ad, it's a holy grail hope to achieve it by end of this coming year with a little moving around pieces/ saving. Another watch geeks watch.

    I bought my GMT II about 20 years ago and I wear it pretty much every day regardless the activity. I can't recall the last time anyone said anything about it or even noticed it. I think of it as having saved me money over all the years I didn't buy what are essentially disposable watches. If I wanted to, I could sell it today and probably make money on it. Really no one notices, however I was in an airport terminal train recently and a woman on the train mentioned my watch.
    My Sub is so rugged, I've bashed it hard into so many things. Other watches I've wrecked, but the Sub is bullet proof. Worn it virtually every day for 18 years, never serviced. It's been on my wrist in real harsh environments, rafting down silt filled rivers for over a week, snorkeling, hang gliding, ATVs, skiing you name it. As far as I'm concerned the Sub is the best watch for active people. It's great for when you're covered in mud or wearing a tux.
    I do think I got some blowback at work. When you're wearing a better watch that the executives you work for they tend to think, "He doesn't need a raise, we'll give it to someone more deserving". It doesn't matter that they're driving new Porsches or Corvettes and I'm driving a 7 year old pick-up truck.
    We all make choices how to spend our money.

    What I do like about Rolexes is its value retention and appreciation. My dad bought a Rolex Sub in early 2000s for about $3000-4000 and sold it recently in 2018 in a used and abused condition for $4900. So, not only did he get to wear the watch for about 18 years but he actually made money on it.

      Not much really if you account for inflation. $3500 in 2003 was worth about 4700 in 2018. So yor Dad made maybe a hundred or so. Basically he got to wear the watch for free for those years unless he had it serviced.

    To your point about no one caring. When I was younger I bought the Invicta pro diver that looked similar to the Rolex Sub. I knew what I was getting into with the Invicta but it surprised me how many ppl thought it was a Rolex despite the obvious differences. I didn’t care if it got scratched. So to your other point about wearing a larger priced watch on your wrist. I purchased a Baume et Mercier Capeland and quickly realized how cautious I was of my surroundings. It fades after awhile when you realize you have to enjoy these things.

    If people get a negative impression because they see you're wearing a Rolex, it's usually not because there is a negative connotation with being financially successful. Instead, it's because it's sort of a vulgar display of wealth. In other words, people probably don't mind if someone is financially successful, but wearing a blingy symbol of your financial success might be considered distasteful and show a lack of modesty. I'm not saying I personally feel this way, I own a Rolex myself. In other words, there is a difference between disliking financial success and disliking people who show off financial success.

      That also depends on what country you are in. Here, in the last Soviet Republic of Sweden, nobody would notice an expensive watch. But if you would have the audacity to show up in an expensive car, get ready to be judged...

  • @Beanster001
    @Beanster001 5 років тому +1

    Something very odd I have noticed with regards to luxury watches is as follows:
    Many people believe a luxury watch is unnecessary and vulgar but these same people often drive Audis BMWs etc which in their class is similar to a luxury watch. But with one huge difference I could sell my Rolex and make the money back I paid for it & possibly make some money. If I try selling my Audi in 10 years I will be getting very little money back compared to what I paid for it. So in conclusion if someone who owns a luxury car doesn't understand why you would spend so much money on a watch just let them know how much their car won't be worth in a few years.

But now I'm starting to realize that certain people think it's nice but most people don't notice the watch at all. Nonetheless I love it myself and that's all that matters to me. I'm thinking about buying something more mid-tier like a Speedmaster that would be my daily wear and honestly I might actually enjoy that one more than the date just :-) we'll see.

    This is a very realistic video and thank you for making it. I'm one of those who've worked there way up to a Rolex and it was a President. For me, the experience was superior. It felt great on the wrist and I loved it, nothing else like it. However, I'm not a highly successful person though I did work in management. The president simply screams attention, everywhere I went, People instantly gravitated to my wrist and I did not like that. Another thing that's ever true is, never have a nicer watch than your boss so it's important to present ourselves according to our work atmosphere. As a word of advice, always purchase from a certified dealer and absolutely ask if they will send your Watch to Rolex for servicing. Many jewlers will service it in house if you don't ask and yes, charge you the $800 for servicing still. I ended up selling it for those very reasons, too bad, I really liked. Now I'm in the he market for a smart watch, times are changing, in 20 years, those nice mechanical watches will be paper weights. Thanks...

    Exceptionally well thought out. I cannot afford a Rolex, I wear a basic SKX007 (Seiko) with the standard rubber strap. I have never had a better watch. It offends nobody (I worked in Construction). Other watches (especially Fashion) can really look out of place (for some people). On a job site - someone would make fun of you. A $65 grand truck ... no problem. A $1,500 tool... you may be considered cool. But wear a shiny Gold (or Silver) fashion watch.... and your friends will assume that you have a matching purse. Thanks for the video.

      Everyone’s different. The think is you shouldn’t care what other people think. Buying a Rolex should be for yourself not status. When you go home is when you realize that. It’s just you and the watch. If having a Rolex genuinely makes you happy then buy one! Status should not be the reason you make the purchase. Rolex’s are beautiful watches and should be considered a personal gift to yourself. Just helps remind you of what hard work gets you.

    I know it's a 3 year old video, but regarding service.
    The father of a friend of mine has a 1960s submariner, he bought it new. He used to work on oil rigs and according to him, pretty much all of them where wearing subs, also they were not as expensive back then as they are now.
    He brings it every 10 years to a certified Rolex dealer for service and pays between € 390 and € 600 for it - the last service was this year, due Covid he didn't had it serviced last year, and it was a year overdue already, so 12 years, no service and it is his daily beater - and believe it looks like it.
    He has it on a Nato straps as he was Bond fan, he had the original bracelet end 90s restorated and it is still in it's box unused.
    I heard from some people who don't buy them as investment and use them, that up to 10 years seems to be not a problem and they keep time very good.
    However, the GMT, due its complication I think has a 6 year service 'recomended' - but I don't remember where I did hear that...

I will agree with you on the Z Blue Milgauss it's a stunning watch and i also love the Daytona's like everybody else.. I don't hate Rolex but i think you get more quality for your money with a GS.

      @japanwatchconnection If I were to buy a Rolex it would likely be the Milgauss Z-Blue. It's a great looking watch that doesn't scream ROLEX. My next watch purchase will be Spring Drive GMT (with the rotating bezel). I have a large enough wrist to wear it and thing it's one of the classiest GMT watches out there. The Rolex GMT doesn't even come close.

    Regarding quartz movements: a watch maker told me the movements on many of the high end watches are via oligopolies where the movements do not vary much. Charging 600-1000 for a service is absurd. If one pays 10k 20k or 30k for a watch.... service should be included life time. We are not dealing with a Lambo if it's a quartz movement

    Germany is a strange place. I was playing 8 Ball with my buddy and next to us some kids were playing too. I've have a habit of checking wrists for interesting watches so I look at the young fellow which had this really well reflecting piece of steel on his hand. I wasn't sure but was thinking something in the line ''no way that kid has a rolex submariner new''. So I said to my buddy: - ''I think that kid wears a rolex''. He replied; -''Just ask''. So I went up, said I collect watches, asked if it was a submariner and the young man was kinda stunned. He showed me his wrist and yeah it was a sub. I said my thanks and carried on thinking... what a rich country, gonna get somewhere here :)

    Awesome video as always. That's my main problem with buying a Rolex just like any other watch I buy. Eventually, it just turns into a regular really expensive watch. And I don't even want to think about banging into something.

    Thank you for sharing your wisdom JAnthony and I agree with pretty much everything you said. I think the one thing to add is the watch you are wearing should make you smile inside. If it does then that contributes to your inner happiness, which is cooler than any watch you could ever buy. Despite all the challenges we face in life, we should always invest in being decent individuals with inner peace and contentment. That gives the most beautiful and powerful returns in life

    Does a Seiko include karat gold hands and dial surrounds like a modern Rolex or do Seikos use 904L steel? Seikos don’t even hold value like Rolex either...Don’t get me wrong, Seikos are awesome watches and there’s nothing wrong with them but I think Rolexes are just not comparable really, just different price points. Basically you get what you pay for.

    I have four Rolex watches: Milguass (whit dial), Explorer 1, Air King (white dial) and Explorer 2 with date. When I wear one of these four watches, no one has mentioned to me what kind of jewelry I am wearing which I enjoy, not being noticed. I wear them because they look nice and feel great on the wrist.

    I've NEVER owned one - am thinking about buying one as a gift and browsed through some forums to get my feet wet (so to speak). One thing that stood out to me was that some people wanted to buy a specific rolex and they would bring other people with them who were also buying a rolex. They did this to increase the likelihood that the dealer would actually LOOK for the specific watch they wanted.
    I've never experienced a buying process like the one I saw described on the forums and I'm just curious if it's accurate, and if there are any other weird things I can expect when I make my first purchase.

    Why to buy a rolex- even if you're rich:
    1. they hold their value in any part of the world- especially the sport/submariner models....meaning.....
    2. You can emergency pawn in a Rolex for a consistent amount of cash any part of the world even if you don't have anything else on you- can be used as a last ditch survival trade.....try that with other luxury watches that people don't know about (but could cost more than the Rolex......).
    3. Also resale value is good if you get bored of a Rolex/your gf ditches you and the watch makes you think of her....
    PS, I wear a cheaper Saiko/no watch most of the time.

  • @ΕΜΜΑΝΟΥΗΛΧΑΤΖΗΔΑΚΗΣ-ρ5σ

    A real watch enthusiast doesn't see Rolex as a status symbol, doesn't care what other people say. He just loves to see it on his wrist. For me the Rolex Submariner ref. 6538 or the ref. 5512/5513 are the ultimate and most iconic tool watches. You feel like James Bond, or Steve Mc Queen wearing them. No other watch can do that. And if you want something which combines a tool watch with luxury, then a GMT ref. 1675 for sure... I'm wearing my 1965 gilt dial ref. 5513 everyday for about 4 years and still looking at it on my wrist every 10 to 15 minutes

    5:51 - This is actually one of the reasons why i've bought a Cellini over a GMT-Master. I've had people say that i only wear cheap "50+ watches", probably because the only other watch that i wear is a Portofino and oddly enough this made me feel pretty good.

    What about how they’ll sometimes switch out original parts when you send them in for servicing? Can’t that potentially devalue a watch?

    I disagree with your first two points. I bought a brand new omega seamaster which was very nice, but when I put on my first Rolex, it was a completely different feeling. And secondly, I think it does make me feel good to wear it, not because of how other people look at me, I could care less if they see it, and I actually prefer that people don’t know. But I appreciate the quality and craftsmanship and it reminds me that I saved my money and treated myself
