Linda Umstead: I think you maybe right! I believe da same thing he pushes da boundaries & da merrie monarch ain’t about that way, I kinda think they wanna keep it a certain way & only a certain way! Yet there were other forms of hula done way before the merrie monarch ever came to be, but some were lost along the way with time & they forget it or they know nothing about it, except from what they were taught (speaking about da judges). To me Mark brings life back to the merrie monarch! I’ve stopped watching it because it was always the same nā kumu hula winning & it was getting boring to me. But when they finally allowed Mark to come. I watched his 1st performance, & to me he kicked butt. I THINK they only allowed him to perform was because of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch & the impact he was making for hula! Jus my THOUGHTS though! 🤙🏽
@@hitoyota4runners I love Mark. There are several things he does though that really upset the traditional hula community. For one, he hits the Ipu on the "head" Not supposed to smack the top like that, in the same way you wouldn't smack the face of something you respected. That upsets a lot of people. The other is the sunglasses. Hawaii is in a weird place in terms of cultural perpetuation. We got hit a lot harder than Ao te Aroa, or Samoa. A lot of the effort is put into preserving what we've managed to keep, the idea of moving things forward or being progressive is not well received by those who did everything they could to preserve what little has remained through their own pains taking efforts. I can understand both sides a bit. All that being said, Mark is by far my favorite kumu hula.
Awesome. Makes me proud being Hawaiian. Very creative very powerful Mark has shown the Hawaiian women. My sisters and brothers in Hawaiian Stateside. Excellent!
Yulpz his style as kumu hula is defines his own style. Most kumu can be boring. I use dance hula growing up. Dis guy reps Oahu and Cali. Da MANA is real haoles
Kumu hula Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu you are AMAZING! So brave and bold of you to bring this performance to the Marrie Monarch. I LOVE IT! Wahine kahiko dancers doing kane hula moves. I'm sure you raised a few judgmental eyebrows with this one. Your chant, as always, is nothing less than incredible. Sometimes i listen to your chants all day long. Hula naturally gets me emotional with chicken skin and all that, but your performances always bring out more emotions than any others. The 2016 Marrie Monarch performance i have watched thousands of times and it STILL gets me every time! And believe it or not..., i'm a houle!! From the bay area even! I grew up on the other side of the Oakland/ Berkley hills in Moraga. But ive lived on O'ahu for the past 20 something years. I show nothing but RESPECT to the locals and the culture and the aina. All my friends call me the local houle because i listen to Hawaiian music and i know the words (which REALLY trips people out) and i get emotional when i watch hula. Hula is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. But you my friend bring a little bit more to the table. And being a musician and an artist myself, i really admire and appreciate your inovativeness. But I would imagine that the traditionals probably don't share the same feelings. I think i can see and understand some of your statements in some of your performances and all ican say is HANA HOU! Lawe ma luna o ka arts a me ka maluhia e me oe. (I'm still learning but that'ssupposed to say carry on the arts and peace be with you) Aloha
I'm chilean, I feel nothing but respect for hula kahiko, and this is one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen!!! Thank you so much for uploading it!!!
No credit has ever been given to Kumu Mark Keliihoomalu for his outstanding performance. These Po'e Hawaiians shouldn't be criticizing much less pointing fingers at anyone, All you who criticized Kumu Mark, think what you say, pointing fingers at him, "Look at your hand, 2 fingers to Kumu Mark, "HOW MANY FINGERS 👉 BACK AT YOU???? SO DON'T BE NEGATIVE, DO AND LOVE FROM YOUR PU'UWAI, NOT FROM THE MOUTH, FROM THE HEART IS MO BETTER THAN NAMUNAMU!!! LOVE!!
Pele's Mana and her power is real. This Hula reminds me of movement of lava and Pele. I think of Pele as the mother of the aina she created. To me she's sacred 💖
Thiz is just Amazing!!! Nothing more no less than a compliment stated from a brothers perspective! Big fan of ur work Mr. Kealii😉😉😉 Dont stop the talent keep it comin! Mucho love and mad respect from the Valley NORTHERN CALI Stockton!!! Merry CHRISTMAS 2017 AND HAPPY NEW YEARZ to our 2018 Yr TRANSITIONZ. MAHALO
Naty Shy: I think the men placed 4th for auwana one year, but I don't recall them every placing first at Merrie Monarch. At Ia'oe E Ka La in November in Pleasanton they have.
Robbie: At the very beginning of the set, the captions tell the name of the introductory chant, the actual dance & and the exit dance. Rerun it with a pencil and paper.
Mark is far too creative and amazing for the Merrie Monarch judges.
But the audience always loves him and his halau. Go Mark!!! You rock.
because is is "mainland" and they can't have a mainland" group win in Hawaii...just my opinion and observations
