    I noticed Kumu Mark saying in another vid that when he sang the traditional songs it never came out the way his family would sing it, but I think it's awesome, it's truly his signature, and his style of singing makes the performance even more bright and colorful!
    I'm entranced by this Halau and so psyched that they hail from Oakland!

    Kahiko is the ancient style of hula (usually accompanied by the ipu or pahu), auana is the modern (using stringed instruments, piano, etc).
    The issue of smiling is really dependent on the kumu. In the past, it was rarely seen in kahiko because it was considered the more serious/sacred of the two. But as hula itself has evolved over time, so has the kind of expression one sees in kahiko.

    I first watched this video about 12 years ago and I remember bursting into tears of joy and goosebumps all over. His voice, their chanting, the entire kahiko --- it's all incredibly beautiful. I have watched this video probably over 5000 times and l still respond as if it was the very first time. It's simply MAGICAL 💞

    thanks for replying. smile or no smile, i think what matters much more is the fact that you all still embrace & perpetuate what is of origin to the hawaiian people. i'm chamorro, from guam, & our histories are almost similar, what's unfortunate is that majority of my indigenous people don't speak &/or understand our native language & customs. you should be proud to have something of old that you can still call your own. nevertheless, i appreciate your culture as much as i appreciate mine. mahalo

    It is beautiful and is my favorite so far that I have seen and heard. No one has touched on the fabric of the hula and that it is not just entertainment. It has been said that it has evolved through time, this is backwards. Very few now know that he Hula was Kapu or the reason why when it's form and message conveyed much more than entertainment. This performance is spectacular in the current timeframe and I have seen nothing to compare to it's beauty.

    I fell in love with the culture, language and hula when I was based at Barber's Point my girlfriend at the time taught me some of the language, I so wish I had the chance to use it forgetting so much. Thank you for posting! Mahalo!

    This is probably one of three hula's I like from Mark. Marks chanting is always great. However, unlike his other hulas where they are spinning, and spinning and moving, moving and hands flying all over the place, this hula and the other three that I like from AHA, you get to see the movements, modern and traditional, and therefore appreciate the story, culture and the presentation. Maika'i

    smiling is a controversial point in kahiko, isn't it? my own kumu says it's okay to smile, like for instance when a chant is about the beauty of a queen or about love, but not so broad of course. you'll even see it in other halau, like hula halau o kamuela (heheh they're my favorite).

      LadyShyye: Pick up one or two ofMark's CD's. I have actually taught Na Mele O Lilo to my family singing group when Lilo and Stitch came out. They loved learning it and while they learned it, they also learned about King Kalakaua & Queen Liliuokalani. A little history in the verses. Oakland CA 6 2022

    i have a comment about the smiling and not smiling. It mostly depends on what the kumu wants and what the chant is about.

    unfortunately no. Academy of Hawaiian Arts and Kumu Mark are not 'traditional' enough to be placed. Besides Kumu Mark doesn't do this to place, he wants to show his halau and entertain the crowd.

    He`s got the same nice vocal interaction with his haumana as Kau`i, and this really makes the difference to other halau, but so he is even more powerful, there is this Elvis effect in his voice, what makes its very, very unique or modern. On the other hand, if its not kahiko enough i like to see real old way. Just pa`u or pareo, lei and thats it. Victorian underware is presumably not ancian hawaian style.

  • @SgtSplatter782
    @SgtSplatter782 16 років тому

    traditional or ancient style of hula. usually done with just a chanter and a percussion style instrument like a drum or the ipu to accompany the dancers.

    Kahiko, is supposed to be done stoically, no matter the tone of the song. Smiling is considered taboo, but most judges and Halau's don't enforce it much anymore.
