  • How to remove your Brompton rear wheel to fix a puncture
    So, you're out riding your Brompton folding bike and get a puncture, worse still it's the rear wheel / tyre
    We show how to:
    Remove the rear wheel and chain tensioner
    Remove the tyre / tube and check that there's nothing that will cause an instant re-puncture
    Install a new tube (lucky you always carry a spare - right?)
    Re-install the tyre
    Re-install the wheel
    This may just save you an Uber fare
    Yes - we were lucky and it was a Schwalbe One - but the same principles apply to all Brompton tyres
    We were also going to show how to adjust the hub gears but ....
    The video was getting a bit long and (the real reason) the battery went flat on our camera and we forgot to take the spares (so much for preparation)
    This video shows how to set up the hub gears
    • Brompton hub gear setu...
    Worst case - you can just ride home with a singe gear

    Love love love my Brompton. Hate hate hate this maintenance piece. I sell bikes for a living. Spoke with a Brommy rep and was told their biggest plan for Brompton innovations is getting this a lot closer to replacing a tube on a "normal" bike. Hope so.

    I've been watching your tire repair videos. I had so much anxiety about commuting to work and getting a flat tire. Wouldn't you know it, yesterday while riding to work I ran over something and got a flat rear tire. I actually said, in my best British accent, "Oh, dear! I've got a puncture! And in my dreaded rear wheel!". As a 200 lb Hawaiian man, it sounded very funny. After a chuckle, I got to work with my Brompton toolkit and repaired it and kept going! Thanks much!

    I just purchased a rear rack. After 'arguing' with the fender (mudguards) stays and trying to get the rack support on those small bolts, I realized I needed longer bolts. I also learned that I had to remove the wheel to replace the bolt on the right side. Your video came to the rescue! I felt like a pro after watching you remove and replace the wheel. Thank you so much for what you do. We appreciate the videos very much.

    Changed the front tyre - no problem. Looked at the rear assembly of my 2 speed and thought hmmm - UA-cam!!!
    Thanks for the video, very helpful. I didn't realise what I thought was the rear derailleur was actually a chain tensioner till I took it off!
    BTW on my bike, it only had regular washers. not the ones with tags.

    One other option to repair a puncture on a Brompton I’ve used at home and while out on the road, is to use vulcanising fluid (sometimes it’s in a repair kit or can be bought from Halfords) and the feather edge patches you get in most kits. It’s partly sticky and works in cold weather. I usually identify the hole in the tyre first, and if can’t see it, I just pull the tyre off one side of the rim only, without removing the wheel - I then pull most of the tube out just leaving it connected to the rim by the valve. I then put a little air in the tyre so I can spot the puncture, mark it, roughen the area with a bit of coarse sandpaper, then apply the patch when the vulcanising fluid is part dried. I feather outer edges on the outside of the patch so they stick to the inner tube. The patch has an outward facing thin plastic film, which I score corner to corner with a small penknife, so I can peel if off from Centre to outer rather then lift the stuck feathered edges of the patch. I then put the tube and tyre back and pump it up using a non Brompton pocket pump which has a capability of 120 psi. This sounds more difficult than it is to do, and I find it much quicker to do, as I don’t have to remove the wheel ( same for a front puncture). I use this method on racing cycles as well, replacing the tube when I think it has more patches than if should. The lubricant I use for the chain is a wax based one, which doesnt attract dirt. In the old days we washed and lubricated chains with diesel as it is waxy. Thanks.

      Great tip, we were aiming at showing how to change the rear wheel. As when I am out riding I generally change the tube and mend it in the comfort and warmth of home.

    • @effyleven
      @effyleven 4 роки тому

      Is there a need to take the thin film off the outside of the patch? It isn't doing any harm if it stays on, is it?

    • @petercallaghan4718
      @petercallaghan4718 4 роки тому +3

      effyleven I do, because
      after pressing the finer glued edges of the patches down with fine film in place, then removing the film prevents the film from catching against the inside tyre and lifting the patch edges once the tyres are fully inflated. I coat the inside of the tyre and tube, lightly, with talcum powder to reduce friction anyway when fitting a new tube when at home (traditional way on racing cycles when not using tubular tyres). This is the way I cope with punctures and others may have other methods. I very rarely fit a new tube when out on a ride, as it just takes a lot more time, especially with a Brompton. I did such a patch repair on the Brompton under street lights about six weeks ago, and it’s held Fine.

    • @derek_williams
      @derek_williams 4 роки тому

      Peter Callaghan Wow! Never thought of repairing with wheel in place. I was going to put a comment why remove the tyre from the wheel, but not removing the wheel is even simpler, as long as you can find the puncture.

    • @dant.6364
      @dant.6364 Рік тому

      I recently patched a tube on my regular bicycle leaving the wheel in place on the bike. Easy peasy and more sustainable I think. Great tip about using the chain waxing method. It keeps everything so much cleaner compared to regular wet lube.

    Repairing a flat tire in a Brompton is slightly easier than in a normal bicycle, considering the sise and the weight of the parts, including the compactness of the brand specific tools; I am almost convinced to buy Brompton. Fantastic video. Delivered calmly and clearly with great filming. I've neglected by Brompton and only just recently got back into riding. One of my Schwalbe Marathon's finally gave up the other day. Luckily I had two spare, plus a tube that I bought from you guys five years ago!
    This video was a huge help. Took the opportunity to give the bike a bit of a spruce up and now I'm firmly back in the biking zone. Glad to see you're still going. You'll be getting another order from me soon 👌

    Thank you so much. Just changed the rear inner tube after a puncture in my Marathon Plus tyre (I thought they were supposed to be puncture resistant!). It all ran very smoothly, even getting the marathon plus back on. I’ve decided the secret is letting all the air out of the inner tube once you’ve got it into the tyre. Your instructions are so clear 👌

    It's a fantastic demonstration. I have a Schwalbe tyre and after taking it off (for the first time, carefully following the instructions) discovered a wire the size and thickness of a paper clip sticking out of the inside of the tyre. I can't tell whether it's a part of the structure of the tyre and has come loose or whether it managed to enter the tyre and got stuck there. I would be grateful for any information from anyone who knows about these tyres.

    I got my first rear wheel puncture yesterday, so as I knew this video was here, I watched again. It was a great help. Thank you.
    However, I have a couple of points of my own:-
    Small thing. There is a large flat washer behind the chain tensioner retaining nut, but we didn't happen to see it in this video.
    Bigger thing...
    On refitting the wheel I was surprised to find that the tab washers are not exactly symmetrical, but are "handed," or rather, that they have an "up" and a "down" position. The tabs appear to be the same size, but they are NOT both quite the same distance from the centre of the axle hole. Naturally, the drop outs are similarly handed. So, if they do not seem to "seat" properly as you go to tighten the axle nut, you must either take the wheel out again and rotate the axle through 180 degrees...
    .... or do what I did; slip the axle nuts off the end and rotate each tab washer through 180° instead.
    I must emphasise that it would be quite important to check this carefully, and do so every time the wheel comes out. If you tightened the axle nuts with the tab washers in the "opposite" position, they would get bent, and it wouldn't do the dropouts any good, either.
    Thanks for an excellent video.

      Yes - a lot of people are worried about rear wheel Brompton punctures
      The Schwalbe One tyre choice made the change easier - but its a trade off, less punctures with a Marathon plus but harder to remove if you do get a flat. Or a really easy / quick change with this tyre (as we had during a random sportive in Stockholm where the puncture change only cost around 5 minutes)

    thanks nice vid... also check the seating of the tyre after inflation by looking at the point where the tyre meets the rim as you rotate it, on both sides there should be a moulded thin line in the wall the same distance away from the rim all the way round. If" wavey" deflate squeeze the walls in and try again to inflate, this will centre your tyre x x

    I've used your fab video twice now. (Unfortunately!!) Once on the Toon Quayside near the Tyne Bridge and once in London's Hyde Park. There are worse places lol. Incidentally I swapped out my CHPT3 slick Schwalbe one tyres for the Marathon racer tan walls, seeing as I was in close proximity to Brompton Junction, and also since inserted Slime in to the inner tubes. I'm not expecting many flats for the foreseeable future............🤫🤞

    Great video and a very clear explanation. One thing I would do is fully pump up the tyre before putting the wheel back on. The reason being is, if the puncture isn't fully repaired and air is leaking you don't have to go through the whole process of removing the wheel/gears again 😀

    So, I got a rear wheel puncture while riding through urban streets yesterday! The tyre had recently been split by a thorn, which I'd repaired using Bostick after fixing the tube puncture - the glue on the tyre had separated letting the tube repair patch touch the tarmac .... the patch developed a slow puncture and quickly deflated after trying to re-inflate it. The patch couldnt be removed because it was vulcanised to the tube from the previous repair. I did a temp repair (it was dark on the road, I just had small torch and front bike light) by sticking larger patch over the original one, using the aforesaid vulcanising glue. And sealed the tyre using the glue to stop the innertuube protruding. I used a high capacity mini pump to inflate the tyre enough to be able to ride. This got me home, but isnt to be recommended as lasting repair. The process didnt take long to do (wheel not removed etc).
    The upside was that I went to Tesco 24 hour for food to cook, and was able to give a homeless chap a wooly scarf, hat, and two pairs of warm socks (I would have missed him had I not had the puncture; he was sitting outsides Tesco on cardboard asking for a £1: some new clothes, jaffa cakes, salmon sandwich, and pineapple snack seemed a better option, before he walked the mile (in his shoes) to the Salvation Army hostel for the night). The money for the Aldi clothing came from a £5 note given me in a envelope (from the www.leathersatchel.com which is via their monthly contribution to www.awesomeliverpool.co.uk, which provides the envelope, the £5, and a note explaining the recipient should do something beneficial with the money. This gives me a different outlook as I travel around on the Brompton, and made it a habit to carry the clothing in the Brompton bag (its very light) in case asked for help. Brompton company and riders seem ideally suited to such actions, as we travel much more easily and aware around urban areas than pedestrians and car drivers (all of whom ignored this man in his 60s, dressed in a gilet, jeans and trainers on a cold night). What say you Brompton riders and Brompton CEO? It allows us to make an immediate improvement to another souls wellbeing on a very grass roots (no beuraucracy ) level.
    Finally, I bought a new rear tyre and a spare (folding Schwalbe Kojak) and replaced the rear tyre today using the video. I skipped a couple of the steps suggested - I didnt need to removed the gear (chain) link from the axle to remove the wheel or change the tyre; I just noted I was in top gear and how many threads were showing before removing the tightening collar so that it could slide through the link securing nut and washer, and be replaced with same tension/external threads as prior to the puncture. The amount the chain protruded in to the axel didnt alter this way, so gears didnt need to be adjusted. I didnt remove the wheel securing nuts or the locating tabs to remove the rear wheel - just slackened the nuts and pulled the wheel out of the frame by wiggling it a bit side to side... this meant I didnt have to think about orientating the locating tabs, and could just slot the wheel back in to the frame once new tyre and innertube replaced, and tighten the axle securing nuts.
    Enjoyed the video and others.

    At 7:43 the inner tube looks too skinny almost like rim tape for the volume of the "supple" Schwalbe One. Did too much stress on the tube cause the "flat"? These videos are very useful and well presented. The best on the web. Thanks! I plan to upgrade to the Schwalbe One soon.

      The Schwalbe AV4s are our favourite Brompton inner tubes, partly as they are so narrow, they fit in the tyre easier. But when they are inflated they take up the space as they are very stretchy.

    Could you please make a video of the rear hinge spindle maintenance? when it's time to change it? do you have to change just the spindle, or the copper bushes as well? how to know when it's time for that change? Because Brompton says it depends on rider's weight, weather, terrain you ride on, etc. So, basically... how do you know when it's time to service the rear hinge spindle?? There are some kits available online to do the job, I would love to see some guide from you on this subject, as I know it will be very well explained to us :-) Thank you again! and greetings from Uruguay!

    FWIW at this remove of time:
    Thanks for this very useful guide. Some comments and queries:
    I assume you didn't actually flat and therefore could not locate the site of the hole; doing so is good practice, however, because it guides your check of the tire (which I think is best done with a bare hand).
    My rather old front hub has 13mm wheel nuts and the Brompton toolkit does not cater for this. Is this because more modern hubs have skewers or different size wheel nuts?
    As you say, when you have a puncture you don't need to let down the tire to remove it. My Brompton has no QR provision on the brakes and this seems to be a design weakness.

    Do you recommend using Stan’s tire sealant once every 3 - 4 months, applied into the tube that most often will simply clog the puncture and require a little added air before merrily riding off? It works well for small punctures; not intended for sidewall damage, Loved your detailed video.

    • @brilliantbikes
      @brilliantbikes  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks so much for watching. We have not had much success with using Stan’s in Brompton tyres. We think it’s due to the small volume of the Brompton tyres. So it does not have much of a chance to work before the air escapes

    Bone dry chain helps keep your hands clean.
    nice details. IGH take more attention, good noting of the tools and issues like brake and gear adjusting.
    Brommie brakes do need a quick brake release cam to clear inflated tire.
