  • Introducing you to a new city in the north part of Sri Lanka where not many people visit for several reasons. First of all, it is very far away from everything else - you need 8 hours bus ride from Colombo. Also, the area is less developed in comparison with other regions in Sri Lanka. Also north part of Sri Lanka was a hotspot for the recent civil war in the country.
Regardless of anything else I loved my time in Jaffna and made several videos to share with you! In this video I am sharing my interactions with the locals with no cuts - enjoy! Davud

Thanks for the amazing video. I've never been to Jaffna. Sri Lanka had civil war for 33 years. Mainly in Jaffna, Trinco, Baticalo areas. So, many of the adults didn't have much time to study English in schools or get used to the language. Otherwise English is 2nd language that we have to study. Now the children can study properly in schools without any disturbance of war. Nothern people suffered a lot because of war. This video made me so happy. Thank you. I wish I can visit there too.

In Jaffna, you don't find many foreigners. That's why English is not commonly spoken or understood among the local vendors. I think you should try 'Rio' Ice Cream which is famous in Jaffna and so tasty.

    Include following less travelled areas.
    1. Kokkuthoduvai and beach near it ( basically noone lives there) - Mullaithivu district
    2. Mannar to Jaffna through Pooneryn, sangupitti bridge ( it has amazing view on the way) - best view during winter season. Go in a private vehicle, so you can stop in the middle and explore.
    3. Puttalam to Mannar through wilpathu jungle (less travelled by locals too). You can spot a few wild animals on the way.
    4. Thalai Mannar beach areas
    5. Eastern coast villages between Trincomalee and batticalo. Different vibes

I visited Jaffna in Feb 2022. Very different to Colombo. I was interested in the history of the tragic civil war and wanted to visit some significant sites, eg Hindu Temple, Jaffna Library (closed because of Covid) and the damaged Portuguese Fort. The centre, though fascinating, was noticeably more run down than centres I saw in other parts of Sri Lanka. There is still catching up to do. Many cows wandering the road, lots of Hindu temples (as well as a scattering of other religions) and some nice (if neglected) beaches on the peninsula. People hospitable, like all Sri Lankans. I went by train which took 6.5 hours but I'm glad I made the effort.

Thank you for visiting this part of Sri Lanka. Jaffna is often ignored by many tourists. It may not be the most scenic part of the country but it exposes you to the great tamil culture.
While you're there make sure you visit the famous temples and check out the historic sites.
Also keep in mind the people from this part of the country have experienced the worst of the war. So be extra kind to them (I know i don't need to remind you that) lol
Ps. Make sure to visit Rio ice-cream near Nallur temple.

The Hindu temple is awesome. Important to visit the Fort if you want to try to understand the brutality suffered by Tamils during the Civil War. Take a walk around and you can still see abandoned, pock marked buildings which were abandoned by fleeing residents.

You will find soo much of Palmyra trees only in Jaffna. Other cities too but it’s very special in Jaffna. I’m a Sri Lankan. I visited Azerbaijan and Georgia, while I was working in UAE. But never been to Jaffna. It’s very interesting. It’s very happy to see tourists there and normal daily life after 30 yrs of civil war. We watch ur all vlogs. 2:24 it's local price.
They won't understand when you say "Flip flops". Locally they call it "Rubber Slippers" or leather slippers
9:55 language barrier, shy and they are not used to tourist buying from them.
10:15 Amla or Nelli fruit. High in vitamin C. Tasty to eat with salt & pepper or chilli mix
11:36 it's not spices, mostly savoury snacks, drinks and sweets. Should have bought Nelli crush drink
35:34 1kg - 800/- it's local price for locally grown Jaffna grapes. It's sour sometimes. Sweet sometimes.

The video clip is very beautiful and worth watching. Just a few things to say about the sweet and fruit that you’ve been looking at in the Jaffna market. The palm leaf covered sweet is called palmyrah palm jaggery which is made from palmyrah. I hope you did enjoy the jak fruit. It would be nice to experience the scenic beaches of the Eastern part of Sri Lanka, Trincomalee and Batticoloa, since you have extended your visa. The Marble beach in Trincomalee is one that you will not want to miss and the lovely Dutch Bay. I’m sure you will enjoy spending some time in Trincomalee and Batticoloa. Wish you all the best for your wonderful tour in Sri Lanka.

You were looking at olives in salt water. The fruits were raw olives. The palmyra jaggery sweets, honey and sugar are made from the juice collected from the palmyra palm which is grown mainly in the Jaffna area. The palmyra trees are a different kind of palm tree to the usual coconut trees you see everywhere else, they are kind of tufty looking. Their trunks can get quite bulbous are then tapped for a liquid called toddy which is then fermented into an alcoholic drink that sometimes looked a bit milky and has a somewhat fizzy taste. That is what was in the bottle they tried to sell you. It can have quick a kick. Have a great time in Jaffna, it is quite a historic place which is only slowly recovering from decades of war and being almost totally off limits for most of that time. You should get some really good food there…..
If you buy jack fruit again you need to learn how to prepare it or ask them to prepare it for you. Otherwise you will get very gluey from the sap. Really it is better to buy it ready prepared! The nuts or seeds can be roasted and eaten. They are delicious.

Palmairah is a palm tree. Jaggery is a sweet made from palm trees . palmairah jaggery is authentic jaffna food. Other areas have kitul jaggery ( totally different sweet taste) or coconut jaggery
Ripe Jack fruit is sweet. Locals mostly buy mature fruit or the tender fruit to cook. That 200/- piece will make a large curry dish
