  • The Northrop (later Northrop Grumman) B-2 Spirit, also known as the Stealth Bomber, is an American heavy strategic bomber, featuring low observable stealth technology designed for penetrating dense anti-aircraft defenses. Designed during the Cold War, it is a flying wing design with a crew of two.
The bomber is subsonic and can deploy both conventional and thermonuclear weapons, such as up to eighty 500-pound class Mk 82 JDAM GPS-guided bombs, or sixteen 2,400-pound B83 nuclear bombs. The B-2 is the only acknowledged aircraft that can carry large air-to-surface standoff weapons in a stealth configuration.

To think it is the design that they landed on that works the best, after testing any and every other design, shape and material they could think of; just follows the natural arc of science that lands on truth and fact. Just think of all the radar and aircraft detection specialists and experts loaded with the scientific theory of aircraft detection that had to have been involved in engineering and testing different materials and shapes to land on one that creates the smallest signature in the sky.
That weapon delivery system encompassed an exhaustively long list of technical problems to solve, a lot of boxes to tick.

Russia has passive location systems and radars with different wavelengths. Stealth aircraft are built on the X band. Russia still uses the L band and there is stealth aircraft better detectable. Passive systems capture emissions from radio, radar, altimeter and satellite communications. These signals are well detectable in space and with high accuracy the operator sees the target.

My father worked for Lockheed and at one point he was tasked with "running some tests" on the B-2. He said he would stand there for a long time, just staring at it. At one point he needed to walk across the wing. He worked in aerospace for 33+ years and had done that on dozens and dozens of aircraft. He said walking the wing and tail of the C5-A was the scariest one. But when he crossed the B-+2 wing he got goose bumps and shivered. There was no sound made between the ships skin and the protective boots he wore. He said it seemed to give a little... almost like walking on a living animal.
If anyone doubts the US's world leadership in inspiring it's people to be and do their best, I can only shrug and nod my head toward a picture of a B-2, or SR-71.

I remember reading a story about the development process, and Jack Northrop was there when it took it's maiden flight. Following years of controversy and negative press after the failed YB-49 project, finally seeing his design take flight, he said "Now I know why God has kept me alive this long."
The technology finally caught up to help manage this advanced platform, and he got to see his vision become still the most advanced bomber in the fleet.
Jack Northrop, Kelly Johnson, and very few others share a special place keeping this country at the top of the list for innovation and invention. Northrop's vision truly was 50 years ahead of its time, and I'm happy he got to see it fly in his lifetime. An inspiration to many.

He worked on many top secret projects and the only reason I'm sharing his name is because he passed away in the late 90s of ALS. Good friends with Chuck Yeager. Soon to be B-21 Raider. Plus the USA successfully tested the Rapid Dragon program a while back. For those not familiar, it is basically using massive military cargo planes to drop pallet loads of missiles out of the back of cargo planes. The missiles are stackable in crates in configurations of 6, 9, etc. So imagine one plane dropping 3 pallets of Tomahawk cruise missiles out of the back and all 27 of them launch out of their crates and head for an enemy target. It doesn't matter how heavily contested the space is, they will likely get through air defenses. Multiple cargo planes could drop several pallets and hundreds of missiles together if need be. That would take out known air defenses and bombers do the rest.

The night of 9/11 my family and I were outside looking into the sky, because for the first time in a long time there were no planes in the air. When we turned to go inside I hear what sounded like rushing wind, without the actual wind. I looked around and up to see a shadow in a triangular shape fly over head. No lights just the shadow it cast from the flying in front of the stars. I was in awe because I knew it was a stealth, patroling the skies to keep the U.S. citizens protected from the potential of another attack. I have since been in love with flying and wished I could have joined the airforce. To this day chills run up my back thinking about it.

They travel 25-35x the speed of sound so they would strike a targeted city like a full minute or more before anyone even heard them cruising overhead. It's insane to think about. Infact they have developed them to enter space to dodge any radar on earth then reenter and make contact within a couple seconds.

@@davidabest7195 It is insane. But worse. 'normal' ICBMs also travel 25-35x the speed of sound and travel mostly above the atmosphere so you'll never ever hear them along most of their flightpath.
Radar dodging is done by going lower, not higher. By staying lower than ICBMs hypersonics hide behind the horizon for longer. They are detected when they are in line of sight of radar. Only the ground breaks that line of sight basically.
ICBMs can also be detected via satellites. When hyper-sonics are below clouds they cannot be detected. When there are no clouds they are super easy to detect because they generate a lot of heat.
Btw ICBM means ballistic missile, the point of hypersonic weapons is to not be ballistic, making their flightpath harder to predict.
Hypersonics are over-hyped hyper expensive waste. ICBMs are plenty overkill to destroy civilization already. And those are here by the thousands.
