This is the first time I've heard Steve Howe play a pentatonic blues lick! Pretty good after 44 years of listening to him. This video is a gem in many ways.
Good observation. I was teaching in the 70's and some of my students wanted to learn Steve Howe licks. I told them that I couldn't really pin him down to some licks, but we'd write out (some) of his parts and then see how they related to the musical structure of the song. (As much a lesson for me as for them.) At that time I could play Mood for a Day, but I couldn't do the Chet Atkins style required for Clap.
@Satanic Panic Fun and Games And it appears that most of the rock/blues scene still does the same licks. It kind of gets boring hearing them all the time. Of course not everyone does them but it's still there.
This is why I love Steve Howe and Yes and Les Paul. Steve is humble and happy like a kid to be there playing with Les Paul in the style that pays homage to Les' style. Wonderful stuff.

Hey John, I've got some Syndicats stuff somewhere, I think it's on a Steve Howe early career compilation cd that was released maybe in the early 1990s. I have it, but it's at storage. I bought it when it came out, and I assume Steve supplied the source material for the cd. I remember it having tracks by The Syndicats, Tomorrow & Bodast on it, and others.
Steve Howe is probably the most versatile guitarist out there. He can play rock, blues, jazz, classical and he can play some mean country licks as well.
First of all, thanks for liking this page. Few guitarists could cover this stuff - never mind guitarists that have developed world-class reputations as Howe has. This music style is actually his child-hood music and he caries it off immaculately well. With respect to "Close to the Edge" if you listen to Yesshows live version I have always believed that Howe's guitar is semi-improvised and is one of the most powerful song introductions ever. @@hughmoss9884 If only there was away to put some soul into him, would be far more accurate. When you have musicians composing songs with the main aim to show off their virtuosity then they have no soul. Comparisons with Beck are plainly ridiculous, he never did an Asia or GTR or produced the dross that Howe was involved with. It is well documented that this is the music he grew up with along with the music of Atkins and that comes across on this performance because he is clearly enjoying himself. Very good guitarist, but not particularly an important one and one that lives off of the reputation from his early years.
@@ascending1965 Oh, I completely disagree. The thing that made him amazing was the lack of soul. Or blues playing, as I'm sure you would say. His approach was more classical. That's what sets him apart from a Clapton, et. al. THAT'S what I find interesting in his composing/playing. It doesn't have to be all bendy, bendy, bendy soulful stuff. Had the honor of shaking Steves hand, truly a versatile guitarist and gentleman
Say Yes to Steve Howe
I just love these little windows through to moments in history and seeing two great guitarists just having fun.
Where's the love button?

She’ll let you know when you hit it
That was one HELL of a musical conversation! Playing a Les Paul no less. Does Les love Steve Howe, YES.
...two of a kind,... very soulful,... very artistry, ...two of the greatest guitarist in the world.
...thank you very much, that´s my point.
My favorite guitarist of all time. He can play anything with strings
And this is why I think Steve’s the best guitarist , period ...
I’ve seen lots of people that played at the club , but Steve really honors Les !
The only other one is of course , the fantastic Jeff Beck , who did that show after Les died with Imelda Mae ... Jeff is well , Jeff ...
You read my mind! Les, Howe, and Beck are 1-3 in my book (in no particular order). Jimmy Page and Django have got to be in the convo as well. Derek Trucks has become quite godly as well... And don't forget Zappa! But they all play different styles so I won't bother comparing, I'll just be blessed that we have all of them to choose from!
YES HE IS
Man can you imagine that? Hangin' out at the bar having a few beers with Les Paul and Steve Howe!!!
No greater guitar player ever than Steve Howe. Just unreal
Oh yes, Steve Howe & Lee Paul playing blues. It just don't get no better than this.
Fantastic!!! Love Steve Howe's playing!!! Thank you for uploading this video!!!
Watching these two incredible Masters together is a guitar player's WET DREAM. .... awesome!
Thanks Chris .... Happy New Year Brother.
You can tell how great they were, they LISTEN to each over, NEVER OVERPLAY, when Les started a phrase Steve ended it with so much fluidity.
