One of F.E.A.R's best contributions was what is still one of the best shotguns in all of gaming. That thing was not only versatile, but it FELT so incredibly powerful.
What I always liked about the AI was how they talked to each other. To some it might seem silly how loudly they announce things, but I think it helps with the immersion to sort of know what they're doing, and why they're doing it. It feels like they actually have an objective in mind as opposed to standing there waiting to get shot (like an objective to hold an area, deny cover, flank the player, etc). It feels great when you see the last enemy in a squad actually backtrack to try and flank you, or surprise you elsewhere rather than just standing there or charging you mindlessly. He knows he can't face you head on, so he has to change his tactics.
I should point out that FEAR's Replicas tended to react to damage erratically. Most games make your enemies just statically tank your shots, not FEAR. The Replicas will react dynamically, erratically to the damage. Limb shots will shake a Replica's aim, and you can hit like 4, maybe 6 guys with the -hammershot- penetrator (with a single shot each) and a decently upgraded slow-mo. Some will literally stagger like they got hit in the solar plexus and stay like that for a fair bit. I've been hit there quite a few times before, fighting to get your breath back is not a fun experience.
biggest jump scare for me was when u first fight the invisible dudes. the game up until that point was just pure adrenaline fueled chaos and crazy shit. then u enter some offices and its quite. Im like oh god.....its quite that can possibly be good. as im slowly exploring getting more and more freaked out about literally nothing happening. i notice some movement in an office. so i look thru the glass into the office and one of the invisible dudes jumps thru the glass and kills me. i freaked the fuck out. legit just froze and died........fuck, man, no other game got me like the first F.E.A.R.
This was an awesome listen and I am so happy I have found this channel. 1k is less than a single percentage of what you deserve. Please keep up the good work. After watching the Lost Planet essay I listened to this entire discussion and I am eagerly awaiting whatever you put out next as I go through your backlog. Great fucking work man.
Perseus Mandate, to my knowledge, was so shit because of how it was rushed out the door by the publisher. TimeGate made Extraction Point, and that’s arguably better than the base game, imagine how good PM could’ve been if they weren’t forced to meet an unrealistic deadline.
People say Perseus Mandate sucks, but F.E.A.R. is so fun to play that I still had a good time with it. Not as good as the base game or Extraction Point of course, but it's kinda over hated. Honestly, I'd take it over the sequels any day of the week.
You should check out the Trepang 2 demo. Some have excitingly called it “F.E.A.R. 4”. My impression is that it fun but chases something isn’t what I think made F.E.A.R great, as Trepang focus more on the action. And thrusting one into combat encounters, while FEAR had the player chose when and where to initiate the fight. Any way, on your thoughts about new settings, I always liked fears level for how mundane where. If I where to make a fear game I would have it set in something like the Suburbs
I actually have already played the Trepang 2 demo. It's definitely got the spirit of FEAR, although I think visually it could use a bit of work. Like it's not as striking as FEAR is to me, but it could change in the full game.
Not making the sequels part of an anthology series like they originally planned was the worst mistake Monolith ever made. FEAR 2 tried to bandwagon all of the FPS and horror trends at the time and it was mediocre. FEAR 3 feels like a half finished game. They completely lost the plot on the first games identity and they could've experimented more freely if they dropped the Alma shit and made it FPS X-Files. Trepang2 ironically does this aspect better than the "FEAR spiritual successor" angle the game was marketed as. You get swords, very expansive dual wielding, and weapons like a grenade that turns your enemies into flesh-eating mutants that attack everything.
Hey! I hope you will see my message, if you're a fan of FEAR's lighting, disable FSAA! It breaks soft shadows, now enjoy FEAR but looking even better ;)
Now if we talk about fear I've really been following it well and I like the story greatly it was around the same time I was born the first clip I saw was the girl on the ladder and I knew I needed more P.S I was born in 2004
I love F.E.A.R and F.E.A.R 2 they're great and I think FEAR 2 is underrated and gets unfairly judged FEAR 2 did Alma a lot better and the horror was better but the gunplay did go down
I liked the second FEAR game too, i hated the third one though because they turned the game into so arcadeish, i mean theres literally points system in single player, hitmarks etc.

@@nicholashoff8311 Are you all right there?
@@puddel9079 yeah I was at work it was supposed to say wrong
This game still has the best Shotgun I've ever used in an FPS, it should be the model for all FPS Shotguns.
